Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE
In NVDA, we have object navigation, review cursor and carret, and of course physical mouse. Suppose you want to click on close button on any windows say ms word, from the num pad assume that you have turn off, press insert+up arrow once, and then insert+right arrow few time until NVDA says close button followed by insert+enter to click. As you all know that NVDA is an open source screen reading software that can be downloaded free of cost from nvaccess.org web site. Its latest version is 2013-2 released just few days ago. There are some good developments related to NVDA here in India. First; A development team is now working right here in India contributing new features and improving the screen reading software. The team is lead by one of our brightest software developer who himself is a screen reading software user. He is Mr. Manish Agrawal. Manish works full time with Sapient Technologies at very senior knowledge resource and he now gives 40% of his time specifically to the NVDA project. He is supported by one more dedicated developer and also very experienced screen reading software tester. IIT Delhi is also putting a team together to work under Manish to contribute in development of NVDA. All these efforts are under a joint project being implemented by CIS and Saksham and supported by enable-India. Thanks to Hans Foundation to provide financial support to run this project. This list is growing fast and we can all appreciate that how important these features are for us. More important is that we now have developers who are very willing to listen to us and work on what we think are most important features for us in our jobs or educational environments. For example, One major reason due to which I myself was not able to switch to NVDA was that it did not announce auto complete suggestions of mail IDs in Microsoft outlook. Important is the task. We need to be able to read all parts of the screen and messages and also to be able to use mouse clicks when required. NVDa already has this functionality. Most of this works with object navigation. In 2013.2 flat review too has been inhanced to give another option to do this. I too had this problem in the beginning to get used to the reading of messages where NVDA did not announce messaes automatically and there was no pointer. Pleaces where we need to rely on jaws cursor when using jaws. With few days of working with keys of object navigation it has come to same level of ease of use as with jaws cursor. You can compare this to some extent to frame restriction when in jaws cursor. By default NVDA is restricted inside current button or control. You just need to move it one or two levels up by nvda+shift+up arrow and then review cursor movement commands would begin navigation in application window. Hi, Nice discussion is going on here. I would like to add some more points. Primarily, my company uses gtalk for chatting. But NVDA is not user friendly in this regard. I personally use gtalk for chatting. To read chat messages I need to press insert B. If I chat continously in an hour it reads from beggining. and menu items are also wont work. can any one suggest me in this regard? Or if it is possible, kindly put this point in to development team. I hope this will get resolved. Hope I explained my query clearly. On 9/6/13, Dipendra Manocha dipendra.li...@gmail.com wrote: Important is the task. Review cursor is already always active. You do not need to activate it as you do with jaws. NVDA+arrow keys moves review cursor in current selected frame or as NVDA calls it: inside the object. By increasing definition of frame to whole window, SAME COMMANDS DO EXACTLY WHAT JAWS CURSOR IS DOING. WHEN YOU REACH ANY OF THE BUTTON WHICH NEED TO BE ACTIVATED, YOU CAN SIMPLY PRESS NVDA+enter to activate the button under review cursor. In addition to this NVDA also provides audio feedback of movement of actual mouse pointer. You can also route mouse pointer to review cursor or to the insersion pointer. Then activate left or right mouse clicks. With these tips, I would encourage you to go through the user manual which describes all these featues very well. There are also audio tutorials available for use of NVDA and link to these can be found at nvaccess.org web site itself. Re: [AI] LAPTOP / Tab
There is a completely different mode of operation when it comes to use of any android device. When we attach a keyboard, we will need to use the touch screen in same way as normal seeing persons use mouse in collaboration with keyboard. We are habitual in use of computer applications to do every thing with keyboard. Most apps on android are not to that llevel of keyboard support. There fore, for activating commands and to reach to diferent parts of screen or to read text out we would depend on touch screen similar to what normal seeing persons keep doing every thin on the PC with the help of mouse. If I chat continously in an hour it reads from beggining. and menu items are also wont work. can any one suggest me in this regard? Or if it is possible, kindly put this point in to development team. I too had this problem in the beginning to get used to the reading of messages where NVDA did not announce messaes automatically and there was no pointer. You can compare this to some extent to frame restriction when in jaws cursor. By default NVDA is restricted inside current button or control. You just need to move it one or two levels up by nvda+shift+up arrow and then review cursor movement commands would begin navigation in application window. Hi Dipendra Although the steps in reality are really simple once you do it yourself, while reading about it it seems something that is not my cup for most. What I would suggest, is to make a small specific podcast with an example which are carried out both in Jaws and NVDA for this specific task. Once folks get the concept of object navigation right they will automatically get convinced about the utility of NVDA is a good screen reader. [AI] Using the right Web address
Q. Kim, I'm confused about Web addresses. Some sites have a www, and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they need the www to work and sometimes they don't. What gives? -Rick from Lexington, KY, listens to my national show on WVLK 590 AM A. I don't blame you for being confused, Rick. For those who don't get what Rick is asking, here's an example. My main website is www.komando.com, but you can also get there by typing komando.com. It works either way. However, I also use news.komando.com and videos.komando.com. My contests http://www.komando.com/contests/ have similar addresses, such as win.komando.com. But if you add a www to the beginning of those, like www.news.komando.com, it doesn't work. As confusing as it might sound, there is a reason for this. First, you should know a few terms. The main part of a Web address, such as the komando in www.komando.com, is commonly called a domain. The prefix, such as www, news or videos, is a subdomain. (For those who know, I'm going to ignore top-level domains right now to keep the explanation shorter.) Think of the domain like a hotel and the subdomains like rooms. Each room can have different decorations. With that in mind, let's take a quick step back through time. In the early days of the Internet, things were very different. There was no World Wide Web as we know it. There were no cat pictures or videos. Everything was plain text. There were also other ways people regularly communicated. Some people set up parts of their sites for file transfers, email and news groups. To keep these organized, they used subdomains, or, in our analogy, hotel rooms. So, what we now call a website would often live in the World Wide Web, or www, subdomain. A place for uploading and downloading files would live in the File Transfer Protocol or ftp subdomain. News groups usually used news or nntp. As the Web became bigger, the www subdomain became the most-used for websites. Soon, the www became what you typed by default. Basically it went from a hotel room to the hotel lobby. That's why starting around 2003, browsers began to add it for you automatically if you forgot. These days, most sites just redirected their domain to the www subdomain. That's why when you visit komando.com it redirects to www.komando.com. But not every site does, which is why you can occasionally run into problems. For a while, search sites still treated www and non-www addresses as different sites, even if the content was the same. Today, advances in search sites have made this a non-issue. Search sites are now smart enough to know that both addresses have the same content. This also explains why typing in http://www.news.komando.com doesn't work. News is a subdomain of the komando.com site. You're asking for a subdomain - www - of a subdomain - news. Going back to our hotel analogy, it's like looking in the closet expecting to find the bed. As a rule, it usually doesn't matter if a site address uses www or not. It's just a leftover from the early days of the Internet. However, you may run into a few sites where the www is necessary. It's pretty rare, but some sites require it. If you have trouble loading a site, try putting the www back in. Occasionally, this will fix the issue and route you to the correct site. However, if the site address is already a subdomain, like videos.komando.com, then no www is needed. Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE
Actually unlearning is biger challenge than learning. There are some podcasts for object navigation already available. We may need to do some specifically for jaws users. Even for that. It would be better if new NVDA users could point out where they are getting stuck and where they feel the need to switch back to jaws. That feedback would be very helpful. Thanks Dipendra -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Kotian, H P Sent: 06 September 2013 13:01 To: Dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones and Tabs. Subject: Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE Hi Dipendra Although the steps in reality are really simple once you do it yourself, while reading about it it seems something that is not my cup for most. What I would suggest, is to make a small specific podcast with an example which are carried out both in Jaws and NVDA for this specific task. Once folks get the concept of object navigation right they will automatically get convinced about the utility of NVDA is a good screen reader. [AI] Accessibility consultants / firm working for accessibility consultancy.
Dear All, We have a web-based application at our workplace, designed by Uberall Law, a Pune based company. The application is used for time-sheet filling amongst other purposes. The application however is not screen reader friendly. There are onmouseover elements, which cannot be activated using Jaws curser, mouse clicks using keyboard, OCR feature of Jaws, hotspot clicker scripts, etc. The source code is obfuscated, so can't comment as to what is wrong. Finally the developer from their team is coming to meet me on 16th to understand the requirements, and desired changes to be made. Therefore, I am in need of an accessibility consultant / a firm working in this area. Initially, I expect the consultant to document the desired changes to be made, and / or assist the developers wherever needed. As it is unlikely that the developers will part with their source code. If required, then one or 2 visits will also need to be made to my office. And if that is not possible, then remote session may be required if developers need some assistance. Any additional assumptions may be made as the work in this field involves. Interested individuals / consultants working with the firm may drop me an email with the quotation, along with the work experience, the kind of projects handled in past, etc. This may be treated as urgent. Feel free to call me on +91-9892622230 should there exist additional queries. Regards, -- Amar Jain. More important is that we now have developers who are very willing to listen to us and work on what we think are most important features for us in our jobs or educational environments. For example, One major reason due to which I myself was not able to switch to NVDA was that it did not announce auto complete suggestions of mail IDs in Microsoft outlook. Global team had this a very low priority because they always suggested to use thunderbird instead of MS Outlook. I could not make that shift due to my company policy and responsibilities. Indian development team fixed this issue and for past few months I am working very happily full time with NVDA as my full time screen reading software. What this team now wants is that the priorities of bug fixes or new feature requests should be set by the users themselves. So, here comes the opportunity to make a screen reading software work where we find that it is not working. If you would like to report an problem that you are facing use of NVDA or you feel NVDA is not providing information that you need, please report it to: sumandog...@gmail.com Normally there are three releases of NVDA every year. How-ever, if you would like to try out builds of version that NVDA development team in India is releasing, write to Suman with this intension on the e-mail provided above. These releases are issued after every bug fix. These are not ensured for stability and thus only those who would like to test out the new features and provide feedback should get into this mode of using NVDA. Last but not the least, We are getting very close of provide licenses of Eloquence to work with NVDA along with the license of Sangita and Vocaliser voices. Saksham will be providing these licenses in a few weeks to come after testing

Specific objective of getting a team here in India is to work on priorities set by users in India. The team started its work by concentrating on improving performance of NVDA in Microsoft office applications. Some of the remarkable improvements that Indian team contributed to NVDA include: Added sentence reading command Improved paragraph reading command performance specially with bullets and auto numbering Reading of protected documents in MS word Announcement of suggestions in microsoft outlook in to or cc fields Improvements of speech output in spell check dialogue box Reading of status bar im all office 2010 applications Etc... This list is growing fast and we can all appreciate that how important these features are for us. More important is that we now have developers who

Arivanandham, regional director of NIVH (national institute for the visually handicapped) chennai, on 27th august during the conference on orientation programme on equal opportunities. kindly read below and do something. “people with total blindness do not know how to clean their teath, they do not know of cleanliness, they do not know how to take a clean bath, and even they do not have proper dressing sense. Moreover, a totally blind mother do not know how to lift her new borne child, and they do not know how to breastfeed. totally blind people will always feel that they are insecure. On the other hand, the partially blind are more arrogant. They always hate to have a walking stick. They indulge in frequent conflict while travelling in bus and in public places. Normally partially blind people are more aggressive in nature. They do not want to project themselves as blind, however they will use this disability as a shield to get them out whenever they got caught. They too have a problem of efficiency in discharging their duties efficiently at workplace. There is another classification of blind, that is people who lossed their vision due to accidents and other reasons. They are arrogant than that of the above. They always hate to live after their loss of vision. They always think of killing themselves. They always try to avoid their duties by showing their disability in the first place. Ok, Let us keep all the above aside. If we consider the intellectual capability of the blind, it is 20% of the total person. Because 80% capability arise out of vision, this is a scientific truth. However with this 20%, they project themselves as capable persons and demand employment opportunities in government sectors. They are difficult to manage at workplace. If you help the blind once, they will enforce it as their right upon you from next time. They will become your constant disturbance if you help them once even to cross the road. besides all that, we have no alternatives but to provide them 3% reservation in government employment.” note: dear members, the above views are not delivered by any other government official, but by the official who has been appointed to work for the betterment of the visually challenged. after serving in this arena for 25 years, he addressed the government gathering that contained officials from all government departments under the label his PHD findings. kindly look into this and suggest the measures to bring this official into limelight. this derogatory remarks are not about a single visually challenged, it is not a bout the visually challenged of a particular state, but this demoralising statement is about all the indian visually challenged. kindly prioritise and let us do something about it. for your authentisity and convenience, am pasting the link of a blog that contains his statements in tamil. http://nandhanpurithal.wordpress.com/2013/09/02/%E0%AE%AA%E0%AE%BE%E0%AE%B0%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%B5%E0%AF%88%E0%AE%AF%E0%AE%B1%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%B1%E0%AF%8B%E0%AE%B0%E0%AF%8D-%E0%AE%8E%E0%AE%A9%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%A9%E0%AF%81%E0%AE%AE%E0%AF%8D-%E0%AE%9A%E0%AE%AE/comment-page-1/#comment-2 let all of us stand abreast to curb this menace, take care! -- Find the good. Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE
Over the last year or so, I have been trying to use more and more of NVDA though Jaws remains my primary screen reader. As so many people have already pointed out, the Jaws cursor like functionality is a difficult part. As Harish Ji has already pointed out, the steps are not as complicated as they might sound , but it is difficult to understand at first, particularly for a Jaws user. Another issue is with Jaws scripts, life is made so much easier with Jaws with applications like Skype and GoogleTalk. Jaws can kind of work with these applications, particularly the former without scripts but not that well. I find the experience is same with NVDA, if they could integrate the functionalities provided by Jaws Scripts to NVDA as well, things could become a lot better. Another thing might be specific to my style of use. I like the Jaws function of Jaws key + Enter moving the web page by a few frames, particularly useful when reading newspapers and such stuff. Has to keep arrowing down in NVDA and that is something I really don't like. This is a wonderful initiative and I hope NVDA continues to evolve and go from strength to strength. Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE
Glad to know that this excellent work is being done in India. I have a rather useful feature request. When reading through the message list in Outlook using the up and down arrow keys, NVDA announces all the column headers along with the message details, for example, message read, from Manish Agrawal, Subject {AI} Exciting development in screen reading software, received 18:30, size 22 kb Column headers like from, subject, received, etc are unnecessary verbiage especially for someone who spends 3-4 hours a day working with Outlook. It would be good to have a feature where these column header announcements can be turned off for Outlook. It would just be enough for NVDA to announce Manish Agrawal, {AI} Exciting developments in screen reading software, 18:30 22kb This would make reading through the Outlook message list much faster and less repetitive. If there is already a way to do this in NVDA, I would be happy to be told how. Just my two cents worth. I'll put across mine - and honestly I am not trying to inflame this healthy discussion. One thing that has not come up in this discussion and is not very obvious to us as users is that this is open source software. It not only means it is free, it also means that we as users can contribute to it as much as we can. For example, a tutorial is not something that a software developer only needs to create. Every single person on this list can contribute to creating learning resources about NVDA - you try things, read up on the net, ask a friend etc. and find out a few things about NVDA that you didn't know till yesterday, feel free to go out and distribute that information to others. Create your own tutorials, blog posts, podcasts etc. Those will not be perfect but they will be better than not having anything for the next person and you would have contributed towards making NVDA better. So, we can just ask for features and bug fixes and tutorials and wish someone will do it. Or we can also contribute in whatever little ways we can - e.g. create tutorials, volunteer to train others, become beta testers and report problems etc. Philosophy aside, some tips for users struggling with new/different concepts in NVDA: 1. Join the NVDA support mailing list. It is a list similar to access India and full of very passionate and experienced NVDA users. You can find a lot of help on the simple and not so simple problems you run into while getting up to speed with NVDA. 2. NVDA is not jaws. It is a different screen reader that is trying a different set of innovations and mechanisms to bring accessibility to software. Spend more time learning NVDA. 3. NVDA is not jaws (did I just say that??). Jaws is much older, has a much larger team of developers, has much more funding etc. but jaws is also much more expensive. NVDA is a simpler product and although it is very powerful, it does not have all the features of jaws. However, at this point it is so powerful that a user like me who deals with a lot of cutting edge newly developed software applications on a daily basis is able to run only with NVDA almost the whole day. 4. Developing a screen reader is very hard. So, if you reported a bug, asked for a feature etc. and no one seems to hear you for a while, do not despair. Every small fix in NVDA takes a lot of time and effort. The developers are probably still fixing the last request. [AI] regarding scribe guide lines of SEBI officer grade 'a' exam
Dear access Indians Warm greetings I would like to know if any one on the list going to take SEBI grade ‘a’ officer exam which is going to be held on 15th of this month. There is a problem regarding the scribe guide lines prescribed by SEBI one of the guide lines stated by SEBI is as follows. The facility of a scribe would be allowed only to those PWD candidates who have Physical limitation to write, including that of speed. In case, such candidates Qualifies in the online test and is called for interview, at the time of interview, the Candidate will have to produce a medical certificate (along with a photocopy) From an authorized Govt. of India/State Govt. Department/ Hospital to the effect that the candidate has physical limitation to write including that of speed. This certificate will be required in addition to his/her disability certificate. The medical Certificate about physical limitation to write, including that of speed, should be Dated prior to the date of online test. At the interview centre, the original will be verified and photocopy will be retained by the centre in-charge. Candidates Without such certificate will not be allowed to appear for the interview. Look at this in spite of submitting medical certificate SEBI is asking another certificate and that too having a date prior to that of online exam. How can a person having 100% blindness write on his own? What is the point in asking a person who is 100% blind to get a certificate stating that he / she cannot write on his / her own and needs help? I’ve tried talking to HR department of SEBI though they agreed to accept for a certificate) post dated to online exam) that is only in words and that too they are saying “you first take the exam and come for the interview then we will consider”. Friends what is all this? How to over come this problem? I request learned members on the list to offer there valuable suggestions. Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE
Hello! As far as I know regarding NVDA, instead of jaws I have tasted many payed screen reader like windows eyes, thunder, etc but perhaps those screen reader might be more powerful even then jaws, but I didn't like those screen reader cause I couldn't understand the feature of those screen reader clearly, and keyboard command was also very tricky. But I felt jaws and NVDA is only the program which can support number of popular application. And if I considered regarding the portability of screen reader, I like NVDA much, cause we can use NVDA along with eloquence voice in any computer without installing them. Till now we can not expect another cursor like jaws or invisible cursor in NVDA, but perhaps things will going to be change soon. cause in order to access another cursor from the keyboard along with speech, it need its own display driver which NVDA doesn't have right now. Jaws is using video intersept software, which require to install in computer if you are using the portable jaws as his display driver. Therefore I believe that we have to rely on the NVDA cursor which is review cursor or object navigation. And another things should be included in the NVDA package is that, as jaws how one can create his or her own required addons using python language. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Mahesh S.
NVDA does have another feature of add-ons. There are several add-ons that have been contributed by different developers round the globe. In version 2013.2 version of NVDA in the manage add-on dialogue box you do have a link that takes you to the download page of the NVDA add-ons. There is a specific add-on dealing with system tray. This is specifically for persons who have come habitual of jaws script for system tray. This add-on adds this system tray item listing feature to NVDA. Else, from desktop, we can tab to systemtray itself. Here by using arrow keys we can access all items of system tray and activate these. Regarding linefeed: In document like MS word: If we use up or down arrow in a document with blank lines, it does say blank. If you use left or right arrow, it announces line-feed. Linefeed is the character that symbolised an enter key press at that location. This in fact is an additional feature which I find to be very useful and exactly the required behaviour. Our friend Pranav have actually authored a set of tutorials for using NVDA with many different applications such as Open office, thunder bird, and all the applications which are part of Samarth tools. These tutorials are part of Samarth tools package. I will ask Saksham team to post these tutorials to be downloadable separately and not just as part of complete Samarth tools. Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE
Scripting is cool framework to enhance capabilities of jaws. How ever, it is new language for many and to get jaws configured for speicif requirements, we could hardly find people who could do jaws scripting. With NVDA development team development, we are trying to create a pool of knowledge resource that could help us deal with such situations. I hope once this project becomes a movement, more python developers would be able to fix and address special configuration issues at much faster pace. I am amazed at the number of projects going on in India itself who try to develop tools for blind for computers. If these teams become contributors to NVDa project, we may end up having an army to deal with. This may happen if as users we ask for NVDA when we come to providing accessibility to computers. Subject: Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE Over the last year or so, I have been trying to use more and more of NVDA though Jaws remains my primary screen reader.
