[AI] On camera and photography

2014-04-01 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Hi

I have recently received a gift in the form of camera of Nikon make
model- Coolpix S3600. May be a good start for training myself in
photography. But wish to know if my friends haven’t hurried it up a
bit. I mean, is there a better camera in terms of accessibility in the
similar budget of say 8-12 grands?

By basic accessibility I mean, voice support for navigating options?
And advanced may be for supporting image capture, say for zoom, light
adjustments etc?

Please note, i am totally sightless. I like capturing nature
landscapes and animals and birds. They don’t mind awkward poses also
)

I am aware of “Touch Sight”, a concept camera by Samsung, which is yet
not launched commercially.

Thanks in advance

[AI] Latest Order of DOPT Regarding facility provided to disabled

2014-04-01 Thread HARSHVARDHAN SINGH NEGI
I am pasting the DOPT order below:
DOPT OFFICE MEMORANDUM REGARDING GUIDELINE PROVIDING FACILITIES TO PWD
EMPLOYEES DATED 31TH MARCH 2014.pdf
No.36035/3/2o9-Estt.(Res)
Government of India
Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions
Department of Personnel and Training
***
North Block, New Delhi.
Dated the 315J; March, 2014.
OFFICE MEMORANDUM
Subject: Guidelines for providing certain facilities in respect of persons with
disabilities who are already employed in Government for efficient
performance of their duties
*
A need has been felt to issue guidelines to provide certain additional
facilities
/amenities to the persons with disabilities (PWD) to enable them to effectively
discharge
their duties. The facilities such as identification of jobs, post recruitment
and prepromotion
training, assistive devices, free accessibility, preference in
transfer/posting,
special casual leave, etc. have been identified as areas which require special
attention.
The proposed facility indicated in the guidelines should be applicable in
respect of such
employees working in the Ministries/Departments of the Government of India,
their
attached and subordinate offices, Central Public Sector Enterprises, Cantonment
Boards
etc.
2. An inter-ministerial committee was formed to finalise guidelines for
providing
certain facilities in respect of persons with disabilities, who are already
employed in
efficient discharge of their duties. Based on the discussions held with the
stakeholders
and suggestion received from the stakeholders, the following guidelines are
issued to
provide certain facilities/amenities to the persons with disabilities:-
A. Identification of jobs
Each Ministry/Department of the Government of India, their attached and
subordinate offices, Central Public Sector Enterprises, Cantonment Boards etc
should
identify the types of jobs which could be easily performed by them specially
for Group B,
C and D posts where the number of jobs are more. Such persons should preferably
be
posted to perform such identified jobs and they be allowed to continue
performing such
jobs, as far as possible. If the concerned PWD officer could perform all the
jobs as people
without disability or could perform several types of jobs efficiently, no
effort should be
made to instruct them to certain types of jobs only.
B. Post recruitment and Pre-promotiong
Induction training is an essential component of the service requirement of an
employee. Induction training programme for the persons with disabilities should
be
imparted together with the other employees.
Job specific post-recruitment as well as pre-promotion training programmes are
required to be organised for the persons with disabilities. Outlining a
specific
module/norm for training programme for the persons with disabilities common to
all the
Ministries/Departments and their attached/subordinate offices, Central Public
Sector
1
Enterprises, Cantonment Board, etc. may not be possible as the training
requirement
may be different on the basis of the work pattern. All the Ministries /
Departments
should take definite action to conduct job specific inclusive training
programmes for the
persons with disabilities with other employees.
Duration and training contents may be finalized in consultation with the
National
Institutes under the Department of Disability Affairs, Ministry of Social
Justice &
Empowerment and, if felt necessary, prominent Associations/
Federations/Confederations workings in the sphere of disability can be
consulted. It
should also be ensured that training programmes are conducted at the time of
change in
job, introduction of new technology, after promotion of the employee, etc. The
venue of
the training may be fixed as considered suitable for conducting such training.
The
Ministries/Departments and their offices shall utilize existing Budget
provisions for
undertaking the aspects of training programme.
The employee with disability shall be placed with an experienced employee for
at
least one month on resuming responsibility of a post. This would help him to
pick up skills
required to perform the job and also the adaptations that may be required in
individual
cases.
C. Providing aids/assistive devices
The persons with disabilities could perform their duties efficiently if they
are
provided with aids and appliances which are suitable to their needs. Ministries
/Departments and their attached and subordinate offices, Central Public Sector
Enterprises, Cantonment Board, etc. should assist the persons with disabilities
by
providing them high tech/latest technology led assistive devices (including low
vision
aids, hearing aids with battery), special furniture, wheel chairs (motorised if
required by
the employee), software scanners, computer and other hardware, etc. in
accordance
with their requirement, which would improve their efficiency.

Re: [AI] suggestions for developing website and software for the visually challenged:

2014-04-01 Thread Kartik Sawhney
I second Pranav Sir. There are several software and websites out there
that have modules and practice tests for various competitive exams.
While these may not be very accessible, a better idea would probably
be to have their developers incorporate accessibility features, rather
than developing new software. tcyonline is one such website offering
practice tests.

NVDA as an open source screen reader has great potential, and hence,
it'll be a good idea to contribute to its development. There are also
several other open source projects on github that you might want to
explore. Many of these pertain to accessibility.

Best,

Re: [AI] regarding learning maths

2014-04-01 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hi,

You might want to check with some blind schools if they have a
softcopy or DAISY version of the NCERT Math textbooks. if not, many
websites offering Math tutorials now use MathML to represent Math.
Since you're looking at learning Math in general (and are not
concerned with a particular textbook), these websites might be a good
option to explore. To use MathML, you will need to use Math Player
from Design Science. It's a freeware, and can be downloaded from the
company's website.

Hope this helps,
Best,

2014-04-01 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

Dipendra has answered most of the questions here. As regards drawbacks, it does
not tell me what the obstacle is. There are very few existing devices that can
do that so I do not have that expectation from this device.

The device is rugged so please have no fear. Remember it is meant for Indian
conditions so use it. I have dropped it down a flight of stairs and the cane
including the sonar device has not been damaged.

I do not have a scale to quantify its usefulness but one of the things I do is
to just use the sonar device when navigating in my office. I know that there
are no steps but there are plenty of humans who insist on standing in the most
unexpected of places.

Hi Vidhya,

In terms of development, please consider working on NVDA. That screen reader
needs developers. If you want to work on science and math, you could add
MathML support. This may need more than 2 months to do but will have global
benefits.

[AI] smart Cane announcement

2014-04-01 Thread Dipendra Manocha
IIT Delhi, Saksham and Phoenix Medical Systems launchSmartCaneTMto assist
visually impaired to detect knee-above obstacles

SmartCaneTM brings safe and independent mobility for the visually impaired at
an affordable cost

New Delhi, March 31, 2014: As per WHO, 285 million people are estimated to be
visually impaired worldwide, with 90% in developing countries. India is home
for 12 million persons with blindness, largest for any country in the world
(2011 census data). The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi’s Assistive
Technologies Group (ASSISTech) is proud to announce the launch of the
SmartCaneTM Device; an innovative and affordable navigation aid enabling safe
mobility for the visually impaired.

Developed jointly with Saksham Trust and Phoenix Medical Systems with funding
received from The Wellcome Trust (UK), SmartCaneTMhelps users detect all
obstacles above the knee-level. Utilising modern sensor technology, this device
detects obstructions up to a distance of 3 metres and is compatible with the
standard folding white cane currently used by millions of visually impaired
people across the globe. Further, the SmartCaneTM device removes the need for
physical contact with the cane in order to detect obstacles in the immediate
environment. At times, accidentally touching or poking a stray animal or
another human with a cane could lead to an unpleasant response.

The cost of SmartCaneTM, inclusive of distribution and training costs is Rs.
3000 while comparable navigational devices globally cost Rs 65000 or more.
Notwithstanding its affordable price tag, the manufacturer i.e. Phoenix Medical
Systems, Chennai has ensured that the device meets global standards in terms of
quality and reliability. Saksham Trust has developed an extensive distribution
partner network, geographically spread across India for spreading awareness,
training as well as after-sale support.

The various features of SmartCaneTMhave been entirely user-suggested and then
ratified through extensive field trials with over 150 users. Talking about the
product, Dr Rohan Paul, who has played a key role in the development of the
SmartCaneTMdevice, said “Blindness is not just a medical condition but
possesses the larger dimensions of social exclusion, stigma and neglect. Blind
people are often taken by surprise by hanging branches, protruding ACs and
parked vehicles while navigating through unfamiliar terrain. SmartCaneTMwarns
the user of such objects in their path through a unique system of vibratory
patterns, designed to detect potential obstacles even at head height.”

Professor M Balakrishnan, Department of Computer Science & Engineering who
along with Professor PVM Rao of Mechanical Engineering Department leads the
ASSISTech activities, said, "I strongly believe that role of organizations like
IIT is to promote technology-based entrepreneurship so that the country
develops quality products that find mass acceptance not only in India but
globally."

Mr Dipendra Manocha, Managing Trustee of Saksham Trust and President of
National Association for the Blind - Delhi, has provided research and
marketing support through its network of organizations. Phoenix Medical
Systems, India’s leading manufacturer of medical devices for infant and
maternity care is the industrial partner of SmartCane™, providing industrial
R&D support and executing the manufacturing process. The Wellcome Trust, a
global charitable foundation, provided a research grant under their “Affordable
Healthcare in India” initiative for translational research on SmartCane™.

Some Key Features of Smart Cane:

* SmartCaneuses ultrasonic ranging to detect objects in its path and generates
tactile output in the form of different vibrating patterns. These vibrations
convey the distance information and thus enable the user to negotiate the
obstacles from a safe distance.

* Detection of obstacles can be ‘done to the range of 3m outdoors and 1.8 m
indoors

* SmartCane is very beneficial to protect from upper body injuries due to
obstacles that project onto the path (e,g, a tree branch or a window
air-conditioner) and goes undetected by a white cane

* It can be used by people with different heights as sensors can be adjusted.

* Movement with smart cane is much faster as detection of obstacles is much
more effective.

* It can be easily attached and detached to the white cane.

* It can be easily recharged and the battery would easily last at least four
to five days on normal usage.

Re: [AI] A 'smart cane' for the visually impaired | Business Line

2014-04-01 Thread Dipendra Manocha
Some answers below:

1. Does it vibrate differently when obstacles at different heights are
detected?

No. Difference in Vibration is based on distance of obstacle and not on the
height of the obstacle.

2. What if there are multiple obstacles? Two or more ones at different heighst
at the same or varying distances?

Vibration will alert about the nearest obstacle. There is no difference in
vibrations for single or multiple obsticles.

3. Any specification about the warranty and service? I announced this in a
training session today. A few people showed interest. They were apprehensive
about the repairs.

Apprehension is quite natural as before this device we hardly got any thing
produced in India. Repairs of products produced outside India is always
challenging. So, Since this device is produced by an Indian Company without
outsourcing any thing to china, we can provide good support and repair
facility. Any one can take device back to the organisation they acquired it
from and you would either get a replacement cane or the cane will be repaired
in short time. Phoenix medical systems have a well established network of
technical teams in many cities in the country. Most repairs will be possible to
be done in the city itself. If fault is biger, the cane may need to be shipped
back to the factory. In any case the responsibility of the user will be to take
cane back to the place where they got it from.

Q: Does it indicate all kinds of obstacles?
Yes. The cane will detect all kind of obsticles. It would not detect drops. We
should use normal white cane technique to detect drops. Prime function of the
cane is to detect knee above obstacles and to detect obstacles or presense of
an object or person with touching the object with cane.

> how many kinds of vibrations does it produce?
It produces four types of vibrations in outdoor mode and three types in indoor
mode.

> can we differentiate the vibration levels?

Most certainly.

> How far it helps us in our day-today life?

Extensive field tests and experiences shared by 150 testers indicate it is very
helpful to increase diginity and confidence in mobility. Generally users are
able to travel faster than what they were able to do with normal white cane.
Mobility is certainly safer with smart cane.

Thanks
Dipendra

HI Pranav,

Here are a few queries:

1. Does it vibrate differently when obstacles at different heights are
detected?

2. What if there are multiple obstacles? Two or more ones at different heighst
at the same or varying distances?

3. Any specification about the warranty and service? I announced this in a

In general, a product review should be useful. Since you tested it, can you
give a write up?

Re: [AI] regarding learning maths

2014-04-01 Thread Bhavya shah
Hi.
Firstly, I don't think Mathematics textbooks can be converted into soft copy.
Also, you can learn Maths from your teacher itself without requirement
of any special tutor. I am in 7th standard and have never yet felt to
hire any extra special mathematics tutor.

I think you can buy Lekha for NVDA from Saksham.
Please download Lekha Premium High for JAWS from

By the way, after some time I am sure he will get used to NVDA Hindi as well.

[AI] Quickheal and Jaws

2014-04-01 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Hi all,

Was wondering whether anyone here has been using the Quickheal antivirus
software? Does it coexist well with Jaws? Is it sufficiently reliable? Also,
is it better than MS security Essential? Despite having the virus
definitions up to date, Microsoft Security Essential always says 'your PC is
potentially unprotected', and I purchased Quickheal today. Quickheal didn't
detect any viruses on my machine, though.

Many thanks.
Geetha

Re: [AI] A 'smart cane' for the visually impaired | Business Line

2014-04-01 Thread Vamshi. G
HI Pranav,

Here are a few queries:

1. Does it vibrate differently when obstacles at different heights
are detected?

2. What if there are multiple obstacles? Two or more ones at
different heighst at the same or varying distances?

3. Any specification about the warranty and service? I announced this
in a training session today. A few people showed interest. They were
apprehensive about the repairs.

In general, a product review should be useful. Since you tested it,
can you give a write up?

superior option. Since March 3rd, individuals from across the country have
been logging onto a website or downloading an app and recording their
favorite poems. Already over 800 poems -- both original compositions and
ones by established poets like William Shakespeare and Harivansh Rai
Bachchan -- have been recorded. The poems will then be compiled into a
digital archive, which can be accessed by a network of over 10,000 visually
impaired individuals from across India. This project, which is the
brainchild of the National Association of the Blind (NAB) in Delhi, Japan's
Omron Corporation and healthcare advertising network, McCann Health, was
initially restricted to academic and vocational textbooks but gradually
morphed into its present avatar.

"Only 1% of the print material in India is accessible to the blind and
that too mostly consists of textbooks," explained Ankur Sachin Bhat,
manager of corporate communications at Omron. "But blind people also have
the same recreational needs of listening to good songs and poems, so we
thought of creating an online library of poems." As of now, the archive is
restricted to English and Hindi but it might soon be expanded to include
regional languages. This is particularly important because there are no
screen-reading softwares for regional languages, explained Prashant Ranjan,
joint secretary of the NAB, Delhi.

Each of the 1000 poems listed on the website can be recorded by three
separate individuals and only the best version will be included in the
archive. Despite these precautions, Bendre worries that the "delivery" of
the poems might leave something to be desired though he agrees that the
archive is a step in the right direction. "I am glad that NAB is doing
something in the field of poetry because even in general, poetry is
ignored," said the budding John Milton.

[AI] My feed back on smart cane shared with the creators

2014-04-01 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Hi,

Following is my Feedback having used your tool for past days..

Feedback for the Smart cane:
-Can it also trace obstacle from ground level from 3 meters?
- I took time to understand change in vibration, so can there be beep
at every radius change for obstacle (It can remain optional, like a
switch for internal-external modes?)
- I experienced pain too after having used it for long distance walk
(around a KM) so I am sure designers must be constantly working on
shrinking the weight and size of the machine.
- I had to be careful while folding the cane as I was worried that the
machine may come off as we have to pull the stick parts from each
other.
- The great achievement of this machine may also include in future, an
ability to warn user of sudden deep ditches.

Still, it's a marvelous creation and hat's off to those creators.

Thank you very much...

 regional languages.
because its very difficult to get audio books or other materials in
 Hindi, Kannada, bengali etc.
this can be one of the feature of the website.
so far I have not found any website catering to this need(Parden me if

there are lot of websites for books, magazines, legal requirements,
banking etc so I don't want to repeat it again.
what other features can I include keeping visually challenged in mind?
and I also want to develop software that would help the blind.
I thought of developing a software which can teach basics of Math.
Many exams like banking, CAT and other competitive exams require some
 amount of Math skills,
and calculators are not allowed in many of these exams.
since many people would have discontinued math after 7th grade,
this software can tutor how to solve many of basic math problems
 without taking help from others.
I will focus on mental math skills rather than using devices like
abacus or tailorframe because using these devices needs some basic
training and would be difficult to learn these before appearing for
 competitive exams.
I thought of including Addition, suptraction, multiplication,
division, percentage, ratio propotion, compound interest and other
 basic topics.
will this self tutoring software be of some use to visually challenged
 atleast in India?
should I include any other topic of Math?
or can you suggest me of any other better software that I can develop?
and is there any other information (unique ) other than sharing
resources in regional languages that I can include in the website?
I have already developped an educational game and its perfectly
accessible with jaws so I will include even this in my website.
very sorry for writing long mail.
any suggestion would be of great help.
 thanks and regards,
 Vidhya.

Dear Mohit,
Most of the Indian Universities directly admit those who passed M.Phil
or clear UGC JRF/NET in to Ph.D. course. Further, they conduct
eligibility/entrance test particularly in Social Sciences to fill the
unfilled vacancies if any. Therefore, I suggest you to prepare for
Ph.D. entrance test as well as coming UGC JRF/NET. Moreover, UGC NET
is enough to become an assistant professor in any Indian University.

April fool! smiles!
No it is not April Fool! the result has been declared by IBPS but
because of heavy load the server seems to be down, because this time
IBPS has declared both PO and CLK result on the same day.
In the morning the website was working very smooth, even I checked my result.

Hi Mukesh,
Thanks for sharing this. This information could be very useful in many ways.
I want to check on the following points.

1. Is this data based on 2011 census or something else?
2. Is this obtained through RTI or a general request?
3. Do they provide statistical information or individual level information?

Thanks.

2014-04-01 Thread suryanarayana ganta
Dear Pranav ji,
I wish to understand a few points:
Does it indicate all kinds of obstacles?
how many kinds of vibrations does it produce?
can we differentiate the vibration levels?
How far it helps us in our day-today life?
what are its drawbacks you identified?
If it is really useful, I would also recommend my local people to buy it.
After getting reply from you Iwill in touch.
Thankks for your expected answer.

Ma'am,
Thank you for coming forward with this plan. The math software will
definetly be of use. I have been depending on indiabix.com for my
preparations for the exams, but it is somewhat difficult to read
formulae with jaws on this website. We will get confused while reading
fractions. So this will definitely be of use. I requests you to
include permutation and combination in the math software. It is an
important area in competative exams.
Thank you,
Ratheesh

[AI] suggestions for developing website and software for the visually challenged:

2014-04-01 Thread Vidhya Y
Good morning every one.
I have holidays for 2 months.
I want to spend my time in an efficient way.
for this I need your suggestions.
I actually wanted to create website for the visually challenged.
but I know many websites already.
I thought of creating a website for sharing resources especially in
regional languages.
because its very difficult to get audio books or other materials in
Hindi, Kannada, bengali etc.
this can be one of the feature of the website.
so far I have not found any website catering to this need(Parden me if
I am wrong).
there are lot of websites for books, magazines, legal requirements,
banking etc so I don't want to repeat it again.
what other features can I include keeping visually challenged in mind?
and I also want to develop software that would help the blind.
I have already developped an educational game and its perfectly
accessible with jaws so I will include even this in my website.
very sorry for writing long mail.
any suggestion would be of great help.
thanks and regards,
Vidhya.

April fool! smiles!
No it is not April Fool! the result has been declared by IBPS but
because of heavy load the server seems to be down, because this time
IBPS has declared both PO and CLK result on the same day.
In the morning the website was working very smooth, even I checked my result.
