Re: [AI] Managing information overload / Reading faster with Jaws
Hi Amar Ji, please instruct me how to pause reading for a few seconds between lines or sentences like you said you do. I Braille text books using a perkins brailler and would like to have JAWS pause for a few seconds so that I could complete writing of a sentence. Thanks. -Original Message- From: Amar Jain Sent: Monday, May 26, 2014 3:04 AM To: accessindia Subject: Re: [AI] Managing information overload / Reading faster with Jaws Shadab Bhaiya, I am using Jaws at 80 to 85% rate with low volume and headphone to deal with such urgencies. However, if I have time, then I do not mind slowing down to 75%. Ignore the email totally if you have crossed this limit already. I don't know how well these tips would match in your situation, but for quicker reading of my legal documents, I adopt following tips: 1. I use that feature of Jaws wherein you can instruct the Jaws to use pause after a line. This way, even if my speed is increased and the word flow is tremendous, with those extra little pauses, I get certain seconds to adjust the Jaws vs brain battle. 2. If I know that I am looking for particular things in a document, then I use either the Jaws Scheme feature with Sound alerts on, or the skim reading feature, so that the figuring out process is more faster and smoother. 3. If the matter is such wherein every word requires care, then I slow down to 65% roughly to avoid mistakes. 4. I use the quick key navigation or the say all feature of Jaws in Word to read by paragraphs. So that the key presses are lesser as against the traditional way of reading. 5. Constant reading requires break of few seconds in the middle. Or it can be adjusted by those blanks in the document if the drafting of the document is in your hand. Of course, remove them when it is to be sent out to the prospective reader. Enough it is, first see if it matches your situation, then we can continue. And party, there is a whole lot of that which is pending including bhabhi ke haath ka khana. So lets discuss that offline. Regards -- Amar Jain. Re: [AI] How do you respond? Show leniency to visually impaired students, allow oral exams
So here is members are of one opinion that is, technology holds the key. I also think technology certainly unlocks many restrictions, but I'm equally concerned about dearth of technology literacy among blind people in particular who prefer to speak and write in Hindi and in other regional languages. Further, to run technological tools one needs electricity round the clock, and according to one figure given by BBC Hindi last week, 40 Crores Indians have never seen electricity in their homes. Situation is very complex, you know. NGOs who impart computer training are only catering to urban-based tranees and they are least concerned about huge aspiring talented boys and girls reside in the countryside who if given proper training can develop softwares which can turn the table for India in the screen-reading softwares market. Now who will take the innitiative? I have a suggestion for NGOs working in the field of providing better technology to blind people in India. many big corporates and other companies are mandated to spend 2 per cent of their net worth on Corporate Social Responsibility. Why not these NGOs prepare a proposal with an objective to reach to those who are not in Metros? many research indicate CSR is going to be spent on education for empowering less-privileged sections hugely... So dig in your heel and cash in this opportunity which UPA has given us in its legacy... On 5/30/14, Dr.B.S.M.Kumar wrote: > Dear All, > I fully agree with Ajay. Re: [AI] facing problem in muzila firefox
Hi. Due to unknown reasons my Mozilla Firefox also hangs on on Google Play, on Windows 7 laptop. Maybe hanging on YouTube can be resolved by installing the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. [AI] My Latest blogpost: Diminishing vision and disappearing space
Diminishing vision and disappearing space It was the same street, same row of buildings on either side. I was sure that the rickshaw puller would get a sadistic pleasure by swerving dangerously close to the startled pedestrian. And the pedestrian must weigh the danger of standing unperturbed by the veering three-wheeler or move away to confront the stray cow bounded in his direction. Yes, it's not that easy to traverse the congested streets of south Indian cities, but people here are so used to the place that they make walking in these streets an art. Not so long ago, I was one of the practitioners of this art, trying to time my jump to stay away from the speeding vehicle or panicking stray animal. Well...as long as I could see. It's not just challenging, but suicidal if I try practicing that art as a blind man. After all, traffic related injuries and deaths are increasing each year in cities like Bangalore and Chennai and the mishaps almost always involve people with perfect vision. Forget about confronting chaos, but even a space with absolutely no movement or obstacle would be challenging for a person who had to undergo gradual vision loss. And herein lies the distinction between those who never had to use their vision before to perceive physical space around them and those who lose it over a period of time... Re: [AI] suggestions required for accessible treadmill
Hi Mukeshji, were you able to get an accessible treadmill? To keep myself fit, I walk for around two hours, jog behind my rickshaw and cycle for twenty minutes. Being blind we don't lead such an active life, which is more dangerous than we think. PS How you can look young and dashing Can I be cruel with you for a moment? You're dull, sick, depressed. Yep, you're. Don't deny it. And you're so because you spend huge time tinkering with tablets. Because you work in artificially warm and cool closets. Because you rarely do any physical activity. And because you eat junk. No surprise you often feel low energy and get irritated soon. Your modern-day lifestyle might have also triggered any disease in your body putting you on medication. Right? The bad news is that if you continue your ways, you will become sicker. And medicines aren't going to completely cure you. Want to know why? Because your modern environment is tempting you to live a life you aren't meant for. "Our modern environment," says William R. Leonard, professor of anthropology, Northwestern University, "has been characterized as 'obseogenic' -- that is, providing abundant food energy, while requiring little work or activity to produce that energy." And yes, the word "leniency" is totally unacceptable to me. You can't develop yourself in a skill based subject like science/ finance/ maths if you are dealt with leniency. We should stress on reasonable accommodations i.e. talking calculators, tools to describe graphs/ accessible equation editors but not leniency at all. Re: [AI] CASE AGAINST IRCTC IN THE COURT OF CCPD
the O/O ccpd is at delhi and the hearing will be held at delhi, so, assistance is required at delhi. I could be there to present my case, but, I am unable to get reservation due to non-availability of seats. -Original Message- From: Ekinath Khedekar Sent: Friday, May 30, 2014 10:37 AM To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerningthe disabled. But still i will try to find someone from Delhi. IRCTC accessibility issue is very major and troubling. You can also put forward that VIs need to go to ticket windows physically to book tickets if they have to avail concessions. Resultantly, increasing their inconvinience.
