If you listen the audio CAPTCHA carefully, then you will able to fill out the write code. I too have faced difficulties while using the audio CAPTCHA initially, but now have become use to it. Re: [AI] inserting page numbers in word 2007.
hi, I use word 2010 so the options might be different for word 2007 but you can certainly try it. if you are using word 2007 or 2010, ribbons are present instead of menus. in case you are comfortable with the traditional menu/sub-menus, use jaws key and v to open the Jaws setting dialogue box, then use down arrow till you hear virtual ribbon and check the box and press ok. after doing this, to insert arrow bullets, 1. use alt h to go to home ribbon. 2. use down arrow till you hear paragraph sub menu. 3. press right arrow to get into the sub menu. 4. use down arrow till you here bullet split button and then press enter. 5. use down arrow till you here bullets library list box. 6. using tab select the type of bullet and press enter. most of the mathematical symbols are not read by Jaws. however if you know the character code for symbols like theta, you can insert even those symbols yourself. you can google for character code of any symbol. to insert, 1. press alt+n to go to insert ribbon. 2. use down arrow till you hear symbols sub menu and then use right arrow to enter the sub menu. 3. use down arrow till you here symbol button drop down grid and press enter. 4. use tab and select the symbol you want. 5. if jaws does not read any symbol and you know the character code, use tab till you hear more symbols button and press enter. 6. using tab, you can get to character code edit box. 7. enter the code and press enter. this will insert any symbol you want. and can be done without sighted assistance. [AI] School for blind had no state recognition
Government abdicates its responsibility and NGOs make marry... http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/School-for-blind-had-no-state-recognition/articleshow/38891507.cms KAKINADA: A day after the outrageous expose of the merciless thrashing of blind students at a school run by a voluntary organisation, a local court has sent the correspondent and principal of Good Field Blind School to remand, even as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) swung into action, taking suo motto cognizance of the offence and issuing notices to Andhra Pradesh chief secretary and East Godavari district collector. The NHRC said it has sought a reply from the district collector in four weeks. On Tuesday, the correspondent of the school KV Rao (the senior most administrator of the school after the principal) and the principal A Srinivas were booked under section 324 read with 34 of IPC (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and section 7/ 23 and 25 of the Juvenile Justice Act (punishment for cruelty to juvenile or child), all of which are said to be bailable. Meanwhile several irregularities have come to light in the running of the school, which was being run by the Good Field Trust. While the school did not have state government recognition, it is also learnt to have been encroaching on nearly two acres of panchayat land meant for community purposes. Villagers of Timmapuram panchayat said that while only 600 sq yd land was allotted to the school, the trust had constructed a boundary wall around the remaining vacant land kept aside for community purposes. "Till date, we were under the impression that the entire site belongs to the school trust. But revenue officials are now saying that they have not given any orders allowing the trust to occupy the remaining land," V Srinivasa Rao, a villager, said. According to sources, KV Rao managed to secure the site for the blind school at a site marked out for community purposes nearly four and a half years ago on humanitarian grounds with the help of the then district collector Ravi Chandra and Timmapuram sarpanch Bejawada Satyanaryana. According to Satyanaryana, who is also the Good Field Trust chairman, the Timmapuram village panchayat had adopted the resolution to allot part of the land marked for community purposes to the trust based on the recommendations of the then collector. Confirming that these irregularities had come to light, Kakinda Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) told TOI that they were now searching for the proceedings of the former collector. "The school trust chairman is saying that collector had given the recommendation. On the other hand, the school does not have recognition. We have learnt that an NGO Good News set up the Green Field Trust to run the school. They are running the school illegally," the RDO said. Interestingly, the correspondent of the school was working as a teacher in another blind school in Visakhapatnam and was on medical leave for the past few months. Rao, who is also visually impaired, had mercilessly thrashed the school inmates, all aged below 12 years, after they allegedly played outside the school premises. Meanwhile the AP Commission for Protection of Child Rights said in a release that its members would be visiting the blind school on Wednesday afternoon and would also hold meetings with the district collector and other district officials. On Tuesday, many parents took away their wards from the school and the remaining inmates were put under the surveillance of three teachers of the Sarva Siksha Abhayan scheme, the district education officer (DEO) Srinivasulu Reddy told mediapersons. -- Avinash Shahi M.Phil Research Scholar Centre for The Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Physically-challenged girl mauled to death by dogs Special Correspondent In a gruesome incident, a 17-year-old mentally and physically-challenged girl was mauled to death by a pack of six stray dogs at Kotha Venkojipalem in the city on Monday morning. The deceased was identified as Mary alias Nookaratnam, daughter of Appala Reddy and Lakshmi. Apart from being mentally and physically challenged, she was both speech and hearing impaired. Because of all the illness, the girl was very thin, just about three-feet tall and was totally immobile. While her father works as a security guard, mother adds to the family income by serving as a domestic help. It was the duty of the couple to feed the girl in the morning and leave her in a makeshift cradle in the verandah of their hut, before going to work. At about 10.30 a.m. on Monday, six stray dogs attacked and mauled her to death. The pathetic thing was that she was neither able to fight back nor scream for help. They even pulled her down from the cradle and tried to drag her into the bushes, adjoining the hutment. According to a neighbour, Ramalakshmi, “Whenever, she would feel hungry, the girl would cry. When I heard her cry, I thought that she was hungry. But when it continued for some time, I came and out and saw six dogs dragging her away. I tried to chase the dogs away, but they attacked me also. I called for help, and a few others joined in chasing the dogs away. But by that time Mary was dead and her body was torn open at various places.” According to Appalanaidu, a neighbour, the dog menace has increased in the hutment located on the hill slopes after GVMC let loose some dogs in the neighbouring cremation ground, about a month ago. “The dogs returned to lick the blood even after the body was taken away by the police for post-mortem. We are afraid, since we have small children,” he said. Re: [AI] Physically-challenged girl mauled to death by dogs
Hi all, I am curious, does the use of a cane provide any defense in the case of dog attacks? In addition, do we get anti-dog sprays etc that we could wear to repel dogs? I have seen a number of such products on amazon.com but most appear to be for spraying around areas such as gardens so that dogs do not come. I have heard of people using dog whistles to repel but have not had the opportunity to research this. [AI] Designer for physically disabled
We need to understand people's disability more closely. http://www.deccanherald.com/content/420975/designer-physically-disabled.html Henna Rakheja, July 22, 2014, DHNS: When in class 5, this young girl developed concern for her wheelchair bound English teacher. Often spotting her mentor in simple and repetitive clothes, Tavleen Dhingra could not understand the reason behind the same. This continued until she enrolled herself in a fashion school and realised that there are hardly any clothing options for the physically disabled. Therefore, when given a chance to deliberate on a project idea for The Global James McGuire Business Plan Competition conducted by Laureate International Universities network, Dhingra decided to work on clothing for the physically disabled. “Being a student of Fashion Business Management, I did not know anything about designing and had to work in tandem with the design team from my college,” says this student of Pearl Academy who started from the basics, “learnt the basic principles of designing” under the guidance of her faculty and came up with Zwina – Unique Clothes for Unique People. It is a brand which specialises in creating smart clothing for the physically disabled. “We categorised the clothing line in four categories for – wheelchair bound, those suffering from spinal curvature, having limited dexterity and prosthetic limbs,” explains Dhingra who interacted with the physically disabled to find out about their requirements. She mentions having purposely replaced buttons and zips with magnetic closing to make the clothes user-friendly. “For the wheelchair bound we have designed flap-open bottoms. Those who cannot stand, need to be lied flat on the bed and the pants can be wrapped on them like a diaper with velcro,” says Dhingra who has also paid attention to create loose and detachable sleeves for those with prosthetic arm. “Also, we have kept the design element in mind and paid most of the attention on the top while keeping the bottoms plain,” she adds explaining the need to keep the focus on the upper body of the wheelchair bound. “But the major concern was to make this business plan feasible and thus I decided to present it as a one-stop shop showroom for all those with physical disability, be it temporary or permanent,” says Dhingra as she narrates her experience of being a part of the Laureate Leadership Summit, where here five minute speech on her business proposal left the audience in tears! “It was a proud moment for me when all the CEOs of leading companies and other eminent personalities lauded my efforts. But unfortunately I couldn’t be awarded the first prize since I being only 20-year old wasn’t old enough to execute the business plan according to them,” she says with a glimpse of disappointment in her eyes even after having lost it to the team from Mexico. Her sulking hopes rise again at the mention of five thousand dollars that she has been awarded as the second prize and also the scholarship to study in Milan! “After two years, they have promised to support me in my venture and I shall definitely set up what I set down to do,” she says with conviction as one wishes her all the best for her noble effort. [AI] Enhance Disability Pension
*National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled* July 22, 2014 *Press Release* *Enhance Disability Pension* Affiliates of the National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) will be holding demonstrations in various parts of the country on July 23 focusing on the demand for an enhancement in the pension (maintenance allowance) paid to persons with disabilities. Currently under the Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme (IGNDPS) a pittance of Rs. 300/- is doled out as disability pension per month to persons with severe or multiple disabilities in the age group of 18-59 years and belonging to BPL families. Under the scheme states have been “urged” by the central government to contribute atleast a matching amount from their own resources. However, there is no uniformity either in the matter of the amount given or the eligibility criteria followed by the states. A majority of the disabled, bulk of whom are poor, continue to be deprived of pension, despite having no means of livelihood. As against a disabled population of 2,68,10,557, as per the 2011 census, only 7,65,000 have been covered under the scheme, as revealed by the Annual Report of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (2011-12). Moreover, as a consequence of the reduced spending by the government on social security schemes, many states are revising the eligibility criteria thereby reducing the already modest number of beneficiaries. The inability of the government to provide any form of employment to persons with disabilities has rendered a vast majority of them, living in appalling conditions, totally dependable on such schemes. While the NPRD will campaign around the slogan of “Jobs or Maintenance Allowance”, on July 23 it will be demanding enhancement of the maintenance allowance (pension) to a minimum of Rs. 3000/- per month for all disabled. Maintenance allowance should be more for persons with higher degrees of disability. There is a need to have a uniform criteria throughout the country. The NPRD welcomes the reported moves by the Government of India to issue universally valid identity cards for persons with disabilities. This has been one of its long standing demands. The issuance of such cards will tide over the issue of disabled persons having to procure multiple certificates/cards for different purposes. However, currently, around 65 per cent of disabled persons do not possess even the existing certificates, keeping them out of any social security scheme. It is therefore imperative that the government speed up the process of providing the universally valid Disability Card. Hundreds of disabled persons will participate in demonstrations and dharnas in various district headquarters on the above demands. *(Muralidharan)* *For National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled* *9868768543* Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Physically-challenged girl mauled to death by dogs
Indeed cruel! stray dogs are a big-time problem. I too am attacked by one a few years ago but saved due to the thick cloth material of my jeans. I know of Hozefa also suffering one such attack. We have approached our area corporator and explained him the situation but in vain. Request learned and aware list members to take up the matter to the right authorities to avoid any such events in the future.
