Credit Audi of America The self-driving car, embraced as a stress-reducing convenience for harried drivers and a potential advance in road safety, could also prove to be a life-changing breakthrough for many people with disabilities, granting them a new measure of independence. While much of the necessary technology is well along in development, those awaiting vehicles that can provide unassisted transportation will have to be patient. Self-driving cars have been the stuff of science fiction and experimentation since the early days of the automobile. In 1925, Time magazine carried an article about a car that cruised New York City streets without a driver, guided by radio control. The General Motors Futurama exhibition at the 1939 New York World's Fair depicted a future of self-driving cars by the industrial designer Norman Bel Geddes. The Bel Geddes vision, with its implications for the disabled, may be getting closer to reality. Automakers have demonstrated cars capable of self-driving operation, and in August the chief executive of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, said the automaker would offer a car with autonomous drive technology by 2020. Photo Nissan, one of the companies that has shown self-driving vehicles in public, has announced that it will offer autonomous vehicles by 2020. Credit Nissan North America Mr. Ghosn did not promise a vehicle that could be operated without a driver at the wheel, and a Nissan spokeswoman, Wendy Payne, said the company had not studied the disability issue. Confirming that Nissan's first self-driving car would require an able driver, she said that all automakers were taking that approach: At this point, the driver has to be able to operate the vehicle. G.M. is among the makers demonstrating self-driving prototypes, and a driver-assistance technology that it calls Super Cruise, to be introduced in 2017 model Cadillacs, makes partly autonomous operation possible on the highway. Still, the company is reserved in its optimism. We believe that one day there will be fully automated cars that drive themselves under all circumstances, a G.M. spokesman, Dan Flores, said about the potential of driverless vehicles for the handicapped. A lot of societal benefits are possible, but we're years away from achieving those benefits. Audi recently obtained a permit to test self-driving cars on California roads. But the cars are equipped with manual controls so a driver can take over if necessary. Present-day tech developed by every automaker and accepted by state laws requires human ability to take over, a company spokesman, Brad Stertz, wrote in an email. Fully autonomous driving is mostly a human generation away, no matter who is making promises. Google is making promises, or at least offering suggestions. The company, which declined to provide an interview for this article, has developed two prototypes. The first was a standard vehicle fitted with sensors, hardware and computers that enabled self-driving. Equipped with steering wheel and brakes, it could be operated by a backup driver in an emergency. The second-generation Google car is entirely driverless and has no steering wheel or brake pedal. Driver intervention is impossible, even in an emergency, so its design would be appropriate for people physically unable to operate a vehicle. In a blog post last April, Chris Umson, director of Google's self-driving car project, said the company was growing more optimistic about reaching an achievable goal -- a vehicle that operates fully without human intervention. In a statement provided to The Times, Google said that the potential of a self-driver to help those with disabilities could be realized only if the human operator were taken out of the equation. The

[AI] SBICapSec Traders: use the Nest Trader to trade!
Dear List Members, Posting here for the benefit of those who have an account with SBICapSec (SSL for short). So, the bottem line was that I was frustrated with SSL's new platform called SBI Smart, (I fail to understand its smartness even for sighted users, forget blind) though. And I had almost made up my mind to change my broker. But given the formalities involved, I was looking for an easy way out. And it is then I saw that SSL has an Exe version for its offline clients. So I shooted them an email, asking them to either let me know if there is an Exe version which I can use, or provide me with the account closing form (which I could have happily downloaded from their website if I so desired). My fortune was in favour it seems, or they didn't want to lose a client. Anyways, so I got access to their Exe version, and I decided to test it out. This is just FYI, the software is called Nest Trader, and the company which developed the software is called Omnesys Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The Exe version seems to be pretty much accessible, and if you have been trading for quite sometime now, then I don't think you would mind looking at those ugly columns of the market watch which are put up as a list view and grab whatever information you can in one announcement as the keystrokes do not allow you to read the listview column by column. And if you fail to understand in one go, then please bare with the screen reader as you will have to listen to it all over again! Although I am still in exploration mode, but to save myself from the pain of listening everything, I have arranged the columns of the market watch and have only kept the most essential columns. And in case if I want a particular script's history geography biography etc, then I can always use a feature which gives a snapshot of the script. Apart from this which is the most challenging part of any trading software, rest of the things are quite accessible and most of it have a keyboard shortcut too. Although not happy with the settings dialogue as sometimes even Jaws Curser does not allow to change the category of settings. But over all, a good software to try and to get improved by writing to the company concerned. By now you know what is to be done. Happy to answer questions if any, but please try to be an informed user yourself before asking, I would really be thankful. Happy Trading! -- Amar Jain. [AI] fyi What does it mean to be 'differently abled'?
Article from Mumbai Mirror What does it mean to be 'differently abled'? Nov 25, 2014, 01.48 AM IST By Rustom Irani MUMBAI ON WHEELS - A five-part series on navigating Mumbai as a handicapped person If I know something about myself with the utmost certainty, it is that I am not differently abled. I am definitely handicapped (US), disabled (UK), a person confined to a wheelchair, a quadriparetic, an individual with a degenerative motor-neuron, but yes, I'm not differently abled. I'm also not physically challenged! I try and avoid challenges which might put my disability to the test, and let's be honest, isn't the most stoic Mumbaikar also physically challenged by his/her daily commute and consistent struggle to survive in this city? The last time I was physically challenged by a flight of stairs - a dire obstacle for me and my wheelchair - it had a very dramatic end, involved seven strong men lifting me to overcome those odds. I'm sure this exercise left them physically challenged too. Some people hear me out with a sympathetic smile and then say, But that proves you were able to achieve the simple act of stair climbing differently. You are differently abled. Not handicapped or disabled. What an inspirational story. No! Please seek inspiration elsewhere. Physically challenged has just slyly evolved to differently abled as a means to be sensitive to any and all disabilities by grouping them as one. In the process, it has become a generic euphemism to quickly and painlessly state the obvious in a total nonobvious manner. As many euphemisms, by degrees the word becomes an evasion of the very reality is describes. The term differently abled, the internet tells me, was actually coined by the United States National Democratic Committee in the early 80s to view the handicapped in a more positive light - and a more politically correct one. But I have yet to meet a handicapped person who finds the term truly acceptable. The most vociferous arguments deem it too cutesy, providing the false impression of sensitivity towards the disabled experience, throwing a soft veil of language over issues of disability which need to be accepted and addressed. I agree with those arguments. I will also add that even differently abled has implications of a pre-set norm of being able, a normal set way of doing things. I've a wonderful little certified document from the All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai, in conjunction with the Ministry of Health Family Welfare, Govt of India, which clearly and quite comfortingly announces my disability, gives it a median percentage score and entitles me to all concessions and privileges based on that score. There's nothing wrong in being called disabled or handicapped. Do we need to be sensitive towards the disabled and handicapped or is it because sympathy is a much easier option that empathy? Most handicapped people accept the fact that there are certain things in life which they can never achieve or do because of their disability. That's not inspirational - the more truthful word is adaptability. It involves sheer hard work, patience and perseverance just like any non-handicapped individual might apply to reach his or her goal in life. Of course we need the help of anyone and everyone at times to get through life. However, the apprehension of how to address us is the first major hurdle - and it's huge - often sending us back to being special but feeling patronised. If you befriend a handicapped individual or are related to one, and have difficulty trying to state our condition to non-handicapped acquaintances without sounding offensive, relax. We've heard it all and actually find it pretty hilarious. As a kid I've been referred to as a langda, and devised the reply of saying I had many other things in common with a species of mango. The best tip though, is to leave the disability as an open-ended mystery by bowling a googly like my parents, who sometimes say, Rustom doesn't walk. It creates all sorts of possibilities and questions in the minds of the inquisitive, helps break the ice and makes us feel totally accepted. If we meet in person don't worry about what term or label might offend me, instead tell me yours and we'll take the conversation from there, I promise. In a blog post last April, Chris Umson, director of Google's self-driving car project, said the

[AI] important from NFB: regarding recruitment in northern railways
hello my dear friends, greetings from NFB, I would like to share one latest news with you all , the same is as under:- The fight for the interest of visually impaired people still continues. Since the Northern Railway had denied 1,113 visually impaired people to appear for Group D post written exams . The federation had raise this matter in the High Court of Delhi and the single judge bench pronounced the judgment in the interest of visually impaired people, directing the Northern Railway to allow these 1,113 candidates to appear in the Group D exam by conducting a special recruitment drive. The Northern Railway didn't follow the directions of the hon'ble High Court. Since the federation had been concerned and working towards protection of rights of all person with disabilities for last four decades. Hence the federation had again raise the matter of non-compliance of the hon'ble court's order by the Northern Railway in the Double Bench of the High Court of Delhi. The hon'ble court had directed the Northern Railway to comply by the order of the court as soon as possible and also directed the Chief Co mmissioner for Person with Disability to the proper implementation of the order of the court by the Northern Railway. Today the federation is going to submit its submission in the court of Chief Commissioner for Person with Disability so as to request him to look into the matter in the interest of 1,113 candidates, who are waiting for their wings so as to fly higher. regards S.K Rungta General Secretary NFB Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! Equipped with steering wheel and brakes, it could be operated by a backup driver in
[AI] Community radio for the blind soon - The Times of India
CHANDIGARH: The city's National Association for the Blind has proposed a special community radio for the visually impaired that will give solutions to their problems and keep them aware, updated and educated. The radio will be a platform where more than 1,000 blind will get to know about employment opportunities, new mobile apps, health and hygiene, new aids and equipment in the market, eye camps, latest innovations, and current affairs. The information and broadcast ministry has this provision of community radios. We have many in the city, especially in educational institutes. Panjab University too has one. For blind, it is their hearing ability that helps them to stay connected with the world and get information. Therefore, I felt he community radio would do wonders for them, said Vinod Chadha, president, National Association for the Blind for Chandigarh and Punjab. If we get a community radio, we will also have programmes to guide the visually impaired listeners on various aspects like how to get disability certificates, from where to get them and who to ask for help, he said. The community radio is expected to benefit the students as well. We will have subject-based and class-wise readings for an hour or so, where a mentor will teach a subject. This way, hundreds of students will be able to learn at once, said Chadha. There will also be session where experts from various fields will listen to their problems and guide the listeners. Chadha informed that along with the blind, the community radio will also be useful for other listeners. We would have talks by health experts on how to save the vision, how to take care of eyes and what corrective measures should one take to avoid blindness. Through community radio he also wished to prepare students for competitive exams and give training like mobility training. The proposal lies with social welfare department and if everything falls in place, then city will soon have its first community radio for the blind. Re: [AI] fyi What does it mean to be 'differently abled'?
Thannk you for sending this! its one of the most eloquent and articulate piece describing our challenges. Havent come across such well put together thoughts in a long while. anyone knows the writer? divyanshu On 11/25/14, Nilesh Bendre nileshbendr...@gmail.com wrote: Article from Mumbai Mirror What does it mean to be 'differently abled'? Did you meet with the chief booking supervisor against the denial? 2. Did you take note of the counter number and the name of the officer on duty? 3. Did you register a formal complaint with regards to the same?
