[AI] Mobile scanning stand recommendations and thoughts on ID Pro

2019-08-27 Thread Amar Jain
Hi all,

I extensively need to deal with scanned documents or prints of scanned
documents. These documents can range from a PAN card to large agreements.

Given that there are no good options for laptops in terms of a software which
can provide output both in English and regional language such as Hindi, can we
explore mobile apps like ID Pro (I am only aware of this app which does a good
job, but happy to hear thoughts) with a mobile stand which can cover entire
surface of the documents and I need not worry about camera alignment / focus
issues? Another plus point of this approach would be that it also opens up the
possibility of reading hand written stuff be it with very little accuracy.

Anyone any thoughts on this approach? Possible recommendations on mobile stands
or mobile apps? I need quality here, and happy to bare whatever cost it takes
to get it done.

Would appreciate inputs.

Regards,
Amar Jain

Good Morning Folks,

Is there any agency or organization in India that sell dot locator for
visually challenged persons? Just to give you an idea, dot locators
are used to identify buttons on the touchscreen devices such as

Thanks.

Re: [AI] Response from SBI on Capture.

2019-08-27 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi George and all,

Let me give the developer perspective here. The problem is that different
browser vendors implement web standards differently. The implication of this
is that if I write one line of a program to say, display the play button,
chrome and Firefox may display said button but safari may not. This is more an
issue with what browser one tests with and what the development contract says
should be the supported browsers assuming such a thing is even specified. There
are no simple answers.

Image Captchas can be cracked using neural networks therefore their benefits
are illusory. They prevent basic attacks certainly hence are still necessary.
Note:
Microsoft no longer supports Internet explorer except for giving security
updates. You need to move to edge and chrome. I realize this is difficult in
enterprise environments because corporates are really slow in upgrading. If
you absolutely must bank from within an enterprise environment then seek for an
exception and get your browser of choice installed. Chrome can indeed be
managed by enterprise IT infrastructure. I speak from experience.

Re: [AI] Response from SBI on Capture.

2019-08-27 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Friends, there's still a work around to play the audio captcha on the SBI
site with Internet Explorer. Although there's no labled button to play the
audio captcha, if you check the box for audio captcha, and then turn your
virtual cursor off by hitting insert+z, then pressing control+P will play
the audio captcha and you can repeat it as many times as you can. However,
there's a catch to it, once you land up on the login page of SBI, you'll
first have to allow windows media plugin by pressing Alt+N if you get the
promtp. You can then allow the same by choosing always allow so that you
don't have to do it again and again. I've done it successfully and am now
able to listen to the captcha using IE11.

Thanks.

I agree we need to be constructive even in our criticism. But that
doesn't mean our concerns are any less important. If they bring in
captcha without any accessible alternative, that is a trash move for
us and is not in line with the letter and spirit of the law of the
land and they need to be told the same. But when they have listened to
us and introduced voice captcha that is a a mostly working but not
adequate solution, think we need to be milder the we approach them,
need to consistently give feedback and try and make them understand
our perspective better.
In any case, whether captcha is a major security feature is highly
disputed by tech experts themselves, so in bringing about such a
rather unreliable solution, don't think the bank can get away by
saying that security is more important than accessibility. Remember
many of the global banks, even banks bigger than SBI across the globe,
many of them don't use captcha. One thing I am concerned about the SBI
move, is that the country's largest bank is also a trend setter. So if
other banks would also start on the same front, then we surely will
have a huge problem on our hands as many have an atrocious record in
dealing with concerns of visually impaired and other disabled people.
so while we do need to be constructive and non-confrontational as much
as possible, we need to be strong too.

[AI] Image description in latest Chrome built

2019-08-27 Thread Satguru Rathi

Hi there,

Since there is lot of discussion going on with regard to Captcha, I
think this may be of some use to many!

Recently, Google introduced "Image Description" feature in the latest
build of Chrome from Version 76 onwards. All you need to do is open some
website which has some images, Google.com is what I used. Now move to an
image using "G" for graphics. Press enter on that image and now open
context menu by application key or Shift + F10. You should find an
option labeled as "Get Image description from Google". At first this is
a sub menu having two options – Always and Just once. If clicked on
Always, it will always try to provide the description. I've used it
successfully while filling up the IBPS form for someone and I didn't
need to rely on anyone to read out the captcha as Google described it
for me! Isn't it grate?

I fully agree. At least we should acknowledge the fact that lobbying
or not, they have taken accessibility a bit seriously than several
other banks. We can certainly lead them in right direction through
constructive criticism. Instead of saying: Hey what you are doing is
unacceptable, Hey, this is great. But could you also look in to better
solutions like OTP? This way we can make them understand our
requirement even better.

Re: [AI] Response from SBI on Capture.

2019-08-27 Thread Srinivasu Chakravarthula
We need to be careful in what we say to deal with this isue. While it's
true that solutions experimenting by SBI may not be fully acceptable but
SBI says they continue to provide better solution. For sure, security comes
first than accessibility. So rather than criticising their solutions, it's
important we send in constructive feedback including some practically
possible solutions. For such a large bank, it's not possible to just pick a
solution like Google's reCAPTCHA and implement; they need to examine a lot
of factors. Else as they have rightly said, money of crores of people will
be at risk.

There is some work happening on CAPTCHA at W3C too.

[AI] George Abraham of Score Foundation is empowering visually impaired people for a decade

2019-08-27 Thread Ramya Venkitesh
Score Foundation, founded by New Delhi based George Abraham, has been
providing various services to visually impaired people from across India
since the year 2002. Abraham shares his inspiring journey with Newzhook
readers.

New Delhi-based George Abraham became visually impaired when he was barely
10 months old. Disability did not stop him from exploring the world and
looking for ways to empower other people who are blind and low vision. In
the course of his extensive travels, Abraham realised there was complete
lack of awareness and this led him to start Score Foundation, an
organisation that works to empower visually impaired people in India.

Started in 2002, Score Foundation has reached out to thousands of visually
impaired people from across the country. Abraham's relentless efforts have
truly paid off.

as a banker, i am expressing what i have observed friends. banks are
not dictating which browsers we have to use. the software vendors do
such things and without technical knowledge of web designing and
security issues, we cannot say why software vendors are dictating
banks. Microsoft wants its users to be pushed to edge so IE11 is not
coming with proper updates. So, in my bank, finacle is working at IE11
with downward compatibility to IE9 but new packages for recovery,
wealth solutions are working in chrome only or IE11 as lowest browser.

Re: [AI] Response from SBI on Capture.

2019-08-27 Thread bhawani shankar verma
true sir, but, now most of the web pages are not compatible with ie11. e.g.
you can't access IRCTC with ie11. Older version of java runtime, dotnet etc
also has become incompatible with newer versions of web browsers. Also you
can't install older versions of many addons and web browsers in windows 10
PCs.

Just a thought, why should the Bank dictate as to what browser should be
used? Shouldn't the service be accessible to any browser the customer
prefers?

Sir

We thank you for the feedback and would like to advise that we are
aware of the issues the captcha would create for our Visually
Challenged customers and sincerely regret the inconvenience
caused.

However in view of the huge increase in failed login attempts on
the INB system which signals a brute force attack by criminals,
this initiative was taken as a quick fix measure to protect the
interests of crores of INB customers.

We would like to advise you that a Voice Captcha is under development
and we expect to roll it out by 27/08/2019. This would enable our
esteemed VC customers like yourself also to use INB independently.

We request you to bear with this mild inconvenience for few days,
in the interests of enhanced security of your account and funds.

Please feel free to reach out to me for any further assistance

Thanks & Regards,
