Re: [AI] Employment situation for PWD in private sector?
Hi Minar, As much as we may think the people may not be able to learn & perform despite the technology, especially the screen reading technology being available & able to perform, the under-performance may well be the result of a 'skill issue'. The 4 people that were inducted by erstwhile IBM-Daksh & now Concentrix-Daksh, far outlasted their peers in terms of their stickability to their jobs. The performance of each of these people, myself included, has been at par with, if not better than the other colleagues. Despite all thes, the organisation has not really opened its gates to the blind while the others have surely been recruited in far greater numbers. Thank you, Bharat. Re: [AI] Looking an accessible Air Conditioner for my home
Hi, Not too sure if you are looking to purchase a window or a split but as per my experience, Panasonic is absolutely the best in class. You can even book complaints & service requests via the app. In case you buy wifi enabled that is an inverter AC you may even save on electricity along with a very smooth experience connecting & opperating it using Alexa as well as Google. Re: [AI] Employment situation for PWD in private sector?
Hello Vaibhav, Yes there is a small portion of VI population not willing to learn new skills. I had a disturbing experience during my induction session of a current company. There was a guy who kept saying that He wouldn't be able to perform certain task due to his vision impairment. same things I was able to complete using NVDA and Narrator. It was a disturbing and insulting moment for entire VI community. I seriously feel these toxic people making our journey much difficult. our own people are responsible for low employment in private sector. I think we need to change this because government jobs are shrinking. I'm in to private job since December 2013 and will continue to remain private sector. Narrator works significantly well with MS office and web apps. Hi, As per the best of my knowledge Narendra's understanding of RPwD on private sector holds true. The law experts in the list might correct in case. I agree with Minar's comments about training. Also accessibility is not as sought after in Indian companies as of now, although it's no different in many prestigious International organizations. Inaccessibility of internal IT infra makes things challenging. I would also like to talk about one other side of the coin. Many of the MNCs are not very particular about laying off based on stagnancy and bench or stale periods. These are the ones with pay per man plans or stronger balance sheets, IT in particular. I have seen some individuals declining work after work sighting their blindness and inaccessibility of the system, although it might be the most un-important part of the work that is inaccessible, and in most of the case the management is happy to provide an assistance or workaround. Many others don't want to skill-up and sight a reason that they need not to learn anything more for a job. This is a small portion of the population. But people like these are enough to create a stigma against the employability of other V candidates based on their ill-performance. We had discussed in some other thread in the past that a person with VI knows well how to perform stuff with their assistive technologies. And it is in their good to work with persons around and get them work with you in the way you want, not everyone would be aware of how strong an assistive technology is, or what are its limitations. Re: [AI] Employment situation for PWD in private sector?
Hello, I fully agree with the views expressed by Bharat over here. My own experiences of getting employed in private sector is not positive at all. Big MNC Companies do declare themselves as equal opportunity employers however they are not inclined in employing people with total blindness even if you perform good in interview. In my opinion, under the Rights of Persons With Disabilities Act, 2016 private employer only has a duty of drafting and notifying equal opportunity policy, maintaining records of disabled employees and providing built in and web accessibility. The limitation of the Act is that employment of people with disabilities in private establishments is not made mandatory . On 3/13/22, Minar Singh wrote: > Hi Bharat, > Thank you for your reply. Hi Bharat, Thank you for your reply. I personally feel that sighted people lack techniques to train Visually Impaired candidates. This is also a big hurdle in recruitment. Accessibility of internal apps bring lots of stress. On 3/13/22, Bharat wrote: > Hi, > > To the best of my understanding, there's really no positive change in > the situation. Re: [AI] suggestions needed for accessible appliance two heat food
Hi, When alone at home, I use microwave to heat my food. My mother generally puts a portion for me in a glass bowl (or i serve myself) which I reheat in a microwave. The microwave is not accessible and has a touch screen. But my mom has marked major buttons with the help of nail paint. I think induction cook top can also be used in similar manner. Hope this helps. Thanks and regards Kriya jain On Sun, 13 Mar, 2022, 6:42 am , wrote: > Hi Aman, > > What devices do you have at home?
