Re: [AI] Bangalore: Blind man can't guide another, really?
even I was also participated in that mega event yesterday, which was a heart thrilling experience to me. we started walk from MG road at 4 PM and reached tillbalbhavan by 4 40 PM through walk, I was in front followed other participents and after putting steps I and my 1 volunteer told about ups downs, pavements, deeps, wholes, crossing roads, and other informations to normal people of about 5 of them in our group, who are waring blind fold and coming behind us, some are very scared coming very slow. we all enjoyed and after reaching Balbhavan awareness was given about eyedonation to the public. with thanks and regards. Nagaraj H On 8/25/14, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: http://www.deccanherald.com/content/427407/blind-man-can039t-guide-another.html Eye-opener of a walk It was an event to open the eyes of fellow citizens to the daily struggle of those who have to navigate without a vision. And, what a way it was to make them meander around blindfolded. The Bangalore Blind Walk, organised by Project Vision, perhaps went on to disprove the parable ‘a blind man cannot guide another.’ Hundreds took part in the walk that started at the MG Road Metro station and culminated at the Bal Bhavan on the Cubbon Park premises. The volunteers and the blind persons were divided into groups. Each group was led by a blind person and followed buy five to seven blindfolded persons and a volunteer to instruct them on what to watch out for. The walk coincided with the National Eye Donation Fortnight. The aim, say the organisers, is to create awareness about eye donation besides sensitising the public about the daily woes of the visually impaired, who can sense the obstacles only by means of a touch or the white cane. While the ones who were blindfolded were scared to put their step forward, the ones without were completely confident and led others. Kushal (name changed), 15, who is blind by birth and is associated with the Karnataka Welfare Association for the Blind, led a group of seven blindfolded persons. He said, “We walk like this every day, but my blindness is no roadblock for my vision in life. I want to work as a news reader in a TV channel,” he said. Megha, Prateek, Sahathi and Pawan, all students in an engineering college in Electronics City, had come to participate after their professor encouraged them to do so. They said, “It is amazing to know how the ones without eyes walk every day on the roads, while we are needing instruction at every step.” As 200-250 people walked on the pavements alongside the Namma Metro Station, the commuters and onlookers were completely in awe. Many of them instantly volunteered to walk blindfolded. Says Father George Kannanthanam, director of Project Vision, “One third of the world’s blind persons are in our country. Yet, when it comes to eye donation, the numbers are miniscule.” Awareness is also being created as to how the ‘104’ helpline (‘Arogya Vani’) can be utilised for eye donation. Anyone from anywhere in the State can call the number for eye donation and get assistance in contacting the nearest eye bank. Prasanna Kumar Pincha, Chief Disability Commissioner of India, flagged off the Blind Walk. Organisations such as Karnataka Welfare Association for the Blind, Bangalore Malayali Catholic Association and Ramana Maharshi Blind Academy participated. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Productivity and efficiency
Mr Dear Rahul sir I think first we should equip with new and existing available technologies along with major applications in computer and it is easy to work with advanced matters equally with normal persons through the help of Jaws NVDA, and other assistive devices. only we need to practice with some research and innovations to face challenges competations which ever comes to our life. regarding with issues there is a need of awareness and sensitiveness to public and among ourselves. with thanks and regards. Nagaraj H. On 8/15/14, Rahul Bajaj rahul.bajaj10...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, I hope this message finds you well. In the last one year, I have done a large array of interesting internships in different areas of the law. While I have mostly had very rewarding and enriching experiences, I have also had to deal with a unique set of challenges along the way. For me, the greatest challenge has been being able to perform my assignments as expeditiously as my sighted counterparts. In most successful and prestigious organizations, especially in the private sector, you are not only required to perform your assignments well, but are also expected to complete your work within a stipulated time period. Therefore, it is critical to maintain efficiency in order to be able to compete with your counterparts. I am often required to access material which is not in an accessible format and has to be converted into an accessible format by using Fine Reader, etc. Similarly, I often find it hard to use advanced features in MS Office like track changes, footnotes, etc as expeditiously as I would like to. Don't even get me started on Adobe Reader! Even though this can, to some extent, be attributed to the fact that I am not as tech savvy as I need to be, I believe that it also has to do with some inherent flaws of assistive technology which can often be slow and unreliable. As a result, I invariably have to invest more time and energy into my work than my sighted counterparts in order to be able to produce substantive and satisfactory results. However, this solution really doesn't work in organizations where every employee has a heavy workload, so everyone has to work for at least 12-14 hours a day to get their work done. In such a case, there is virtually no scope for a visually impaired employee to invest more time and energy than his sighted counterparts. So, the upshot is that the visually impaired employee is assigned lesser work which leads to lower job satisfaction. In sum, my uniform experience has taught me that, even though assistive technology has made it possible for us to access information that was hitherto inaccessible to us, it is still the next best thing to actually reading the information and not a substitute for it. I'd love to know what you all think about this proposition and whether or not your experience bears this out. What strategies have you adopted for increasing your productivity at the workplace? I look forward to hearing from you. Currently I am working as a change coordinator in service management domain in IBM. In this long run, I have challenged the challenges by exploring and doing some RD in finding work place solution. Now I would like to travel little bit on technical or development side. This year-long intension cultivated strongly in my mind to learn Oracle SQL and PL/SQL development or oracle DBA. Learning new things looks to be quite interesting, but when it comes for execution, accessibility issue hampers me to go ahead and is pushing me behind. I would like to know how JAWS or NVDA supports the oracle-related tools like SQL developer, Toad etc. JAWS supports SQL developer tool to certain extent after installing JDK and JRE. I am not sure how it supports other oracle-related tools. When we work for oracle SQL development or oracle DBA, should we connect with multiple servers remotely? If yes, how can we connect servers with the support of JAWS with multiple servers? Even though we get remote access license for JAWS, how can we install the JAWS in multiple servers? If any of you working in oracle, please clarify my doubts and guide me on this. Hoping to expect some positive solution from any one of you. Thanks Regards S. Manikannan Mo: 07795337781. Its high time Government should start computer training centres in the small town and in rural areas of the country. NGOs find it hard to attract funding hence they are concentrated in big cities. But why people with disabilities should suffer who reside in the villeges? http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hubli/Govt-jobs-offer-hope-to-visual ly-challenged/articleshow/39715193.cms BELGAUM: Channamma Marihal lost her vision at eight and suddenly her colourful life turned dark. The girl, who would play happily with other children, started withdrawing into a shell. Many started giving up on her and thought she'd end up in a corner of the house. However, Channamma never gave up fighting the odds to be independent. This girl from Kittur village in Bailhongal taluk recently passed the CET examination conducted by the KPSC and has been selected for a gram panchayat (GP) as a second division assistant. During counselling, she chose Kittur village for her posting and will report for duty in two weeks. She'll be working in the accounts department. Channamma has completed her degree course along with three-year computer diploma course in Mysore. Channamma is one of 129 visually impaired candidates selected as SDAs to different GPs across the state. Seven have been selected to the GPs in Belgaum district. Like Channamma, most of these candidates lost their vision but never gave up. Six years ago, the Karnataka high court directed the government to recruit visually impaired persons. But, this is the first time so many of them have been selected for government jobs. Most of these candidates have taken computer training with job access with speech (JAWS) software. In 2010-11, visually impaired persons were recruited in courts for clerical work. They had been given computers but without JAWS software as it was reportedly costly. Due to that, the visually impaired remained jobless. The software was provided to them only after a long fight and they submitted a memorandum to the government. I don't want to face the same problem after joining work in the GP. I am not aware what kind of job the government will give us. But it should create a disabled-friendly atmosphere at the workplace, especially in rural areas, says Channamma. Basappa Waddagol of Manoli in Belgaum taluk, who selected the nearby Santi-Bastwad GP, said this job has given him hope for the future. I come from a poor background and a small village and almost lost all hopes of making a living. But this job has brought a ray of light into my life. My family, relatives and neighbours are very happy for me, he told TOI. very very interesting love stories and good to give life to needy. On 8/10/14, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: On a midsummer afternoon, a pleasant breeze blows across Fateh Sagar Lake. Clear blue waters shimmer in the sun. Small waves lap against the rocks, occasionally breaking the quiet of the place. The Aravallis, made lush green by the monsoon, loom in a distance. Thirty-eight-year-old Kamlesh Kumar Vaishnav sits on the wall that rings the lake, holding his wife Geeta's hands. His black wheelchair, folded neatly, is parked next to him. They have been coming here for the last eight years, ever since they began dating. It was here that he professed his love for her; here that they decided to marry secretly and here that she broke the news of her pregnancy to him. This place has a lot of memories, says Vaishnav. http://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/love-will-find-a-way-the-story-of-six-disabled-couples-who-never-thought-theyd-find-love/ In Udaipur, a city with white havelis, palaces and forts set amidst hills, where turbaned men sing love ballads to the sound of the iktara on long boat rides, it is difficult not to fall in love. But Vaishnav and Geeta's love story is unusual. I first saw her at the hospital, he says. Though crippled by polio since childhood, Vaishnav has never let disability come in the way of life. Till Class V, his relatives would drop him to school each day on a cycle. At the age of 11, his family gave him a self-operated wheelchair. That was independence, Vaishnav says. In 2006, he began working at Narayan Sewa Sansthan, a charitable organisation that runs hospitals for the disabled and performs surgeries for those afflicted by polio free of cost. Vaishnav was an attendant at the reception of the Udaipur hospital, preparing discharge papers of the patients. Geeta, who was crippled at the age of one, underwent a corrective surgery for severe polio at the hospital in 2008. She had been admitted to the ward for a week. Her right leg was plastered. Even in hospital clothes, she looked so beautiful, Vaishnav says. For the next week, Vaishnav tried to talk to Geeta, but her parents were always around. When she returned to the hospital six months later to have her legs fixed with calipers, they spoke for the first time. Kamlesh Vaishnav and Geeta at the Fateh Sagar Lake. Geeta, who is 10 years younger, lived in Banswara village, 165 km away, but she would travel for four hours in a bus every week to reach Udaipur and meet Vaishnav. I would lie to my parents that I was going to see a friend or to the hospital for my check-up. We would meet at Fateh Sagar and talk. Other couples would take boat rides and go to Nehru Park (a small island in the middle of the lake). We could not, it was impossible with the wheelchair and calipers. But we were content to be with each other, she says. Narayan Sewa Sansthan, set up nearly three decades ago by retired government servant Kailash Agarwal, now 80, to treat patients suffering from polio and cerebral palsy, appears to be an unlikely place for love stories. On a regular day, a vast crowd sits outside the 1,100-bed hospital in Bari, on the outskirts of Udaipur city. They are relatives of patients, who come from as far as Bihar, Punjab and Karnataka for free treatment for their kin. Young men and women in uniform, many of them disabled, stream in and out of the wards that smell of disinfectant and illness. Agarwal's daughter-in-law, Vandana, the Sansthan's director, says the youngsters were all patients at the hospital once, who were treated and later employed there -- as nurses, ward boys, receptionists, accountants and in other capacities. Those who were not employed had the opportunity to attend classes in sewing, mobile repairing, computers, and other vocational skills. The institute also encourages young men and women to mingle. We try to create an atmosphere where it is easy for them to find a life partner. Many of them think of themselves as burdens. This is a place where they meet new people and find a partner, a hamdard who understands them, Vandana says. Eleven years ago, they started organising mass weddings when a few patients approached them for complete rehabilitation. Some told her they were lonely in life. That is when we thought: why not search partners for them? We started talking to patients and families in the hospital. Slowly, word spread. We do background checks of both the boy and the girl: what kind of people they are, if the boy drinks or smokes, and the family's social and economic status, she says. Many of the alliances are of those who met and fell in love at the hospital. When couples face objections from the families, volunteers try to counsel the parents. There have been many instances where we explained to the family that caste does not matter. Most often, love wins, says Vandana. Manohar Singh and

The party has dominated Swedish politics for nearly a century. The Trade union palace in Stockholm is seen at the end of the pictureInternational Workers' Day (also known as May Day) is a celebration of the international labour movement and left-wing movements. It commonly sees organized street demonstrations and marches by working people and their labour unions throughout most of the world. May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries. It is also celebrated unofficially in many other countries. [edit] History International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket Massacre in Chicago, when, after an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at police as they dispersed a public meeting, Chicago police fired on workers during a general strike for the eight hour workday, killing several demonstrators and resulting in the deaths of several police officers, largely from friendly fire. In 1889, the first congress of the Second International, meeting in Paris for the centennial of the French Revolution and the Exposition Universelle, following a proposal by Raymond Lavigne, called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests. May Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the International's second congress in 1891. Subsequently, the May Day Riots of 1894 occured. In 1904, the International Socialist Conference meeting in Amsterdam called on all Social Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate energetically on May First for the legal establishment of the 8-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace. The congress made it mandatory upon the proletarian organizations of all countries to stop work on May 1, wherever it is possible without injury to the workers.[5] In many countries, the working classes sought to make May Day an official holiday, and their efforts largely succeeded. May Day has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist and anarchist groups. In some circles, bonfires are lit in commemoration of the Haymarket martyrs, usually at dawn.[6] May Day has been an important official holiday in Communist countries such as the People's Republic of China, Cuba and the former Soviet Union. May Day celebrations typically feature elaborate popular and military parades in these countries. In the United States and Canada, however, the official holiday for workers is Labor Day in September. This day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Square riot in May, 1886, US President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the riots. Thus he moved in 1887 to support the Labor Day that the Knights supported.[7] In 1955, the Roman Catholic Church dedicated May 1 to Saint Joseph The Worker. The Catholic Church considers Saint Joseph the patron saint of (among others) workers, craftsmen, immigrants[8] and people fighting communism.[9] Right-wing governments have traditionally sought to repress the message behind International Workers' Day, with facist governments in Portugal, Italy, Germany and Spain abolishing the workers' holiday, and the Conservative party in the UK currently attempting to abolish the UK's annual May Day Bank Holiday [10] [edit] Americas [edit] Argentina In Argentina, Workers' Day is an official holidays. Even when it is associated with labor unions, almost all workers trend to respect it. [edit] Brazil In Brazil, Workers' Day is an official holiday, and unions commemorate it with day-long public events. It is also when salaries for most professional categories and the minimum wage are traditionally readjusted. [edit] Canada Although celebrations by socialist, anarchist and anti-globalization activists occur on May 1 in Canada, the government of Prime Minister John Sparrow David Thompson declared in 1894 the first Monday in September
[AI] regarding world earths day on 21st april 2011
dear friends: I wish all of you a happy world earth day 21st april 2011. TERI - Events this year I am giving information about earth day celebration by The Energy and Resources Institute Creating Innovative Solutions for a Sustainable Future Earth Day 2011 - Forests for our future 13-21 April 2011 New Delhi Coordinator: Ms Supriya Gulati , Ms Deepika Joon About the event Earth Day is being celebrated all over the world on April 21nd with the main objective of inspiring and creating responsible actions leading towards environment conservation. The environment has undergone rapid changes due to human actions thus posing a risk to all forms of life on earth. One of the most vulnerable group to the impacts of climate change, global warming, environment disasters are the young children and the youth groups. In such a scenario, it is imperative to create awareness about these cross cutting issues amongst the young populace and also to build their capacities to deal with these changes. With these core objectives, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has been celebrating Earth Day since the year 1996 with the main target group of students and youth groups. The activities are built around a theme to generate awareness across a range of environmental issues. [AI] regarding the condition of visually imp[aired persons
GOVERNMENT SHOULD ADOPT BLIND PEOPLE Main Point Visual impairment is the worst form of disability. If one were to be visually impaired person and also belong to poor family, the problem becomes more severe. Category Miscellaneous Message GOVERNMENT SHOULD ADOPT VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE Visual impairment is the worst form of disability. If one were to be visually impaired person and also belong to poor family, the problem becomes more severe. There cannot be a worse condition than being a visually impaired woman and belong to poor family. The problem of the visually impaired persons are so severe that it should be “seen” to be believed. Amongst the estimated 17 lakhs of differently abled persons in one state namely Tamil Nadu alone, around ten lakhs of them are estimated to be visually impaired persons and of this around five lakhs are visually impaired women in the various age groups. Quite a number of them are born with visual impairment and many of them become visually impaired as they are not given proper treatment at the very young age, largely due to the ignorance of the parents and their lack of affordability. Many of them become visually impaired due to genetic reasons, diabetic conditions at a later stage of life and other reasons such as accidents etc. While medical technology for treatment of blindness has been developed in a spectacular manner in recent years and great work is being done by several eye hospitals and ophthalmologists, the problem still remains at an unacceptable level in India. Large segment of the visually impaired people belong to lower income group and face extremely tough and insecured conditions. While the Central and State governments have initiated many welfare schemes and NGOs also adding to the Government efforts, they are not found to be adequate considering the extent and intensity of the problem. The most glaring problems faced by them is the joblessness and unemployment, forcing many of them to virtually beg for their sustenance. While the Government and several public sector units have reservations for providing jobs to visually impaired persons, many posts still remain vacant due to their “unsuitability” for the positions advertised. In the case of private sector, providing jobs to the visually impaired persons is an exception rather than a rule. Rarely, they provide jobs for visually impaired persons and if and when they do so, it becomes a news. While a number of visually impaired persons have qualified themselves mostly in the arts subjects , their qualification remains only as a matter of “paper degree”, as they are not recognized by the employers in the private sector for providing them job openings. Apart from the jobless ness and consequent economic distress, the visually impaired women face severe conditions of insecurity and physical abuse. In several public forums, visually impaired women have spoken about this problem and in private discussions many have described their plight due to molestation etc. and other forms of abuse. In the case of many visually impaired persons particularly in the lower income group, the family support is minimal. Many of them are reasonably well taken care of as long as their parents would be alive but after the death of their parents, the family support gets severely reduced, as other members of the family are also poor and would view the visually impaired persons , as “economic burden.” Facing severe unemployment conditions with the potential employers not viewing them with understanding, many visually impaired persons, both educated and uneducated and men and women become vendors to sell assorted goods . A number of them sell the products in moving trains , in bus stops and busy thoroughfares and quite a number of them have met with accidents losing limbs and even losing lives in some cases. The authorities frequently chase them away, when they try to sell their products in such areas and it is pathetic to see them running from pillar to post to find place to position themselves for selling. Again, rarely banks give them loan to self employ themselves as vendors and many borrow at exhorbitant interests from private money lenders , virtually making their activity unprofitable. While several of their problems can be narrated , we need solutions. Given the inadequate steps of the Government and NGOs so far , which leave the problems largely unsolved, the Government have to move in a big way to protect their interests. The visually impaired persons left with their problems all to solve by themselves , is a big blot on the conscience and image of the society and the Government. It appears that without losing further time, both Central and State government should adopt the visually impaired persons in the lower income group , by providing them residential accommodation and financial support for their livelihood. For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries. Following her death she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.[5][6] By the 1970s, she was internationally famed as a humanitarian and advocate for the poor and helpless, due in part to a documentary and book Something Beautiful for God by Malcolm Muggeridge. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 for her humanitarian work. Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity continued to expand, and at the time of her death it was operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counselling programs, orphanages, and schools. She has been praised by many individuals, governments and organizations; however, she has also faced a diverse range of criticism. These include objections by various individuals and groups, including Christopher Hitchens, Michael Parenti, Aroup Chatterjee, Vishva Hindu Parishad, against the proselytizing focus of her work including a strong stance against contraception and abortion, a belief in the spiritual goodness of poverty and alleged baptisms of the dying[citation needed]. Medical journals also criticised the standard of medical care in her hospices and concerns were raised about the opaque nature in which donated money was spent[citation needed]. In 2010 on the 100th anniversary of her birth, she was honoured around the world, and her work praised by Indian President Pratibha Patil.[7] Early life Memorial House of Mother Teresa, in native Skopje.Part of a series on Christianity in India Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (gonxha meaning rosebud or little flower in Albanian) was born on 26 August 1910, in Üsküb, Ottoman Empire (now Skopje, capital of the Republic of Macedonia). Although she was born on 26 August, she considered 27 August, the day she was baptized, to be her true birthday.[8] She was the youngest of the children of a family from Shkodër, Albania, born to Nikollë and Drana Bojaxhiu.[9] Her father, who was involved in Albanian politics, died in 1919 when she was eight years old.[10] After her father's death, her mother raised her as a Roman Catholic. Her father, Nikollë Bojaxhiu (his name means 'painter') was of Kosovar Albanian origin possibly stemming from Prizren, Kosovo while her mother's origin was possibly from a village near Đakovica, Kosovo.[11] According to a biography by Joan Graff Clucas, in her early years Agnes was fascinated by stories of the lives of missionaries and their service in Bengal, and by age 12 was convinced that she should commit herself to a religious life.[12] Her final resolution was taken on August 15, 1928, while praying at the shrine of the Black Madonna of Letnice, where she often went on pilgrimage.[13] She left home at age 18 to join the Sisters of Loreto as a missionary. She never again saw her mother or sister.[14] Agnes initially went to the Loreto Abbey in Rathfarnham, Ireland to learn English, the language the Sisters of Loreto used to teach school children in India.[15] She arrived in India in 1929, and began her novitiate in Darjeeling, near the Himalayan mountains,[16] where she learnt Bengali and taught at the St. Teresa’s School, a schoolhouse close to her convent.[17] She took her first religious vows as a nun on 24 May 1931. At that time she chose to be named after Thérèse de Lisieux, the patron saint of missionaries,[18][19] but because one nun in the convent had already chosen that name, Agnes opted for the Spanish spelling Teresa.[20] She took her solemn vows on 14 May 1937, while serving as a teacher at

Her family lived on a homestead, Ivy Green, [3] that Helen's grandfather had built decades earlier. [4] Helen's father, Arthur H. Keller, [5] spent many years as an editor for the Tuscumbia North Alabamian and had served as a captain for the Confederate Army. [4] Helen's paternal grandmother was the second cousin of Robert E. Lee. [6] Helen's mother, Kate Adams, [7] was the daughter of Charles Adams. [8] Though originally from Massachusetts, Charles Adams also fought for the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, earning the rank of brigadier-general. [6] Helen's father's lineage can be traced to Casper Keller, a native of Switzerland. [6] [9] Coincidentally, one of Helen's Swiss ancestors was the first teacher for the deaf in Zurich. [6] Helen reflects upon this coincidence in her first autobiography, stating that there is no king who has not had a slave among his ancestors, and no slave who has not had a king among his. [6] Helen Keller was not born blind and deaf; it was not until she was 19 months old that she contracted an illness described by doctors as an acute congestion of the stomach and the brain, which might have been scarlet fever or meningitis. The illness did not last for a particularly long time, but it left her deaf and blind. At that time, she was able to communicate somewhat with Martha Washington, [10] the six-year-old daughter of the family cook, who understood her signs; by the age of seven, she had over 60 home signs to communicate with her family. In 1886, her mother, inspired by an account in Charles Dickens' American Notes of the successful education of another deaf and blind child, Laura Bridgman, dispatched young Helen, accompanied by her father, to seek out Dr. J. Julian Chisolm, an eye, ear, nose, and throat specialist in Baltimore, for advice. [11] He subsequently put them in touch with Alexander Graham Bell, who was working with deaf children at the time. Bell advised the couple to contact the Perkins Institute for the Blind, the school where Bridgman had been educated, which was then located in South Boston. Michael Anaganos, the school's director, asked former student Anne Sullivan, herself visually impaired and only 20 years old, to become Keller's instructor. It was the beginning of a 49-year-long relationship, Sullivan evolving into governess and then eventual companion. Anne Sullivan arrived at

Anne Sullivan arrived at Keller's house in March 1887, and
