Re: [AI] Negligence in families of disabled

2014-07-08 Thread Naushad Charivilayil
Hi friends, thank you for your reply. A common problem of Indian people
is, hiding evil things occurring in the society. The only way to prevent
evil deeds against disabled people is, we have to expose such activities
to the public. According to my knowledge, most of the time mass media
refuse to report such violence against disabled, because media is the
part of our bureaucracy, and bureaucracy is the part of grand evil.

humiliation and discrimination faced by dalits in Indian society. I'm
sure many blind people have also gone through similar painful
experiences but documentation is scanty. Inspirational talks certainly
help, but painful personal experiences should also be equally shared
and written about. Afterall, movements and struggles find their
inspiration from such sufferings. And sadly writing, there is hardly
any autobiography exists which highlights the sufferings faced by
author. Those blind individuals who have managed to publish their
autobiographies have persuaded publishers on account of their efforts
to overcome their blindness and can simply be clubbed in the category
of inspirational books..

Ring Reads Out Text In Real Time For The Blind

3D Printed Ring Reads Out Text In Real Time For The Blind.

http://phys.org/print324010714.html

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are developing
an audio reading device to be worn on the index finger of people whose
vision is

impaired, giving them affordable and immediate access to printed words.

The so-called FingerReader, a prototype produced by a 3-D printer, fits
like a ring on the user's finger, equipped with a small camera that
scans text.
A synthesized voice reads words aloud, quickly translating books,
restaurant menus and other needed materials for daily living, especially
away from home

or office.

Reading is as easy as pointing the finger at text. Special software
tracks the finger movement, identifies words and processes the
information. The device
has vibration motors that alert readers when they stray from the script,
said Roy Shilkrot, who is developing the device at the MIT Media Lab.

For Jerry Berrier, 62, who was born blind, the promise of the
FingerReader is its portability and offer of real-time functionality at
school, a doctor's

office and restaurants.

When I go to the doctor's office, there may be forms that I wanna read
before I sign them, Berrier said.

He said there are other optical character recognition
devices on the market for those with vision impairments, but none that
he knows of that will read in real time.

Berrier manages training and evaluation for a federal program that
distributes technology to low-income people in Massachusetts and Rhode
Island who have
lost their sight and hearing. He works from the Perkins School for the
Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Everywhere we go, for folks who are sighted, there are things that
inform us about the products that we are about to interact with. I wanna
be able to
interact with those same products, regardless of how I have to do it,
Berrier said.

Pattie Maes, an MIT professor who founded and leads the Fluid Interfaces
research group developing the prototype, says the FingerReader is like
reading
with the tip of your finger and it's a lot more flexible, a lot more
immediate than any solution that they have right now.

Developing the gadget has taken three years of software coding,
experimenting with various designs and working on feedback from a test
group of visually impaired people.
Much work remains before it is ready for the market, Shilkrot said,
including making it work on cellphones.

Shilkrot said developers believe they will be able to affordably market
the FingerReader but he could not yet estimate a price. The potential
market includes

some of the 11.2 million people in the United States with vision impairment,
according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

Current technology used in homes and offices offers cumbersome scanners
that must process the desired script before it can be read aloud by
character-recognition
software installed on a computer or smartphone, Shilkrot said. The
FingerReader would not replace Braille—the system of raised dots that
form words, interpreted
by touch. Instead, Shilkrot said, the new device would enable users to
access a vast number of books and other materials that are not currently
available

in Braille.

Re: [AI] . Re: my quriyocity are normelpeopleintrestedinmarryingblindpartners

2014-07-02 Thread Naushad Charivilayil
Your case may be exceptional, please don't compare whole society through
your view point. Indian society is not ready to accept visually
challenged people at least for next 50 or 70 years. For example, long
time back when I worked as a web programmer in a company at Eranakulam
district at Kerala state, I accidentally heard a conversation between my
colleagues about blind society. On that day, i understood how does the
sighted people putting distance to visually challenged community.
Throughout my life, I found women are more aggressive than men in such
matters.

In Kerala, more blind men are married to blind women. Some blind men are
married to sighted women. However, most often blind women marry only
blind men. It is very unusual for a blind woman to marry a sighted man.
This is due to the privileged position enjoyed by male members in
families and society. The prevalence of the practice of dowry is also
attributable to it. At present, unless blind men marry blind women, the
latter have almost no chance of a wedlock.

Almost everywhere in the world; people with any kind of disability are
looked down upon as second class citizens. They are less privileged.
Social barriers are much more responsible for the backward nature in the
life of people with visual disabilities. Many sighted people in
regressive societies feel that blind people are abnormal. This is a
serious misconception that hamper the progress of visually challenged
society in several ways in India including marriage life.

Do you know, in indian society, what visually impaired people cannot do
gets more attention than what they can do. Such an attitude on the part
of society deprives blind people of their basic human rights. Their lot
is cast in a world of darkness. They drag out their sterile existence in
silent agony.

I am blind too! Yes it does matter to my spouse... he takes great care
to keep things where they belong, he takes care not to leave me alone
on the street

and I in return make sure he eats his fruits everyday!
So where is the problem?

Dear Ishita,

Why so pessimistic my dear? I am not trying to motivate you or anyone
else. I am just stating facts. First of all where did you get the idea
that anyone should marry us blind women for charity purpose! Not at
all! But I am not blaming you for thinking like that. These are normal
thoughts we Indians are conditioned to believe. You may not want to
marry a person without hands or legs, that is perfectly up to you. It is
OK if you feel like that. The point we are trying to make here is, that
it need not be blindness that determines the criterion for marriage, it
is the person in totality that matters. Your skills, personality,
talents, values and what you have to offer by way of warmth, love,
commitment and friendship that should matter. If you are blind or not,
should not matter at all. Now, I have no sight at all, and I know that
no one wants to marry blind women, not even blind men prefer to marry
us! But, having said that, I wish to tell you that there are some very
wonderful marriages that have happened for blind women with sighted non
disabled men. And when you look at these cases, it is very encouraging
and motivating. Maybe, if more of us share our positive experiences,
young intelligent women like you may look at this subject differently.
Let us together discover what we need to do to become desirable and
sought after

Hi friend, IBM lotus symphony is a good and accessible freeware suite,
but unfortunately development has been dropped. If you are not satisfied
with IBM lotus symphony, you can use libra office with java access

enable accessibility options under option dialogue, located at tools

add it to your windows registry. Keep in mind, accessibility features of

[AI] How the Brain of a Blind Person Rewires Itself

2014-06-13 Thread Naushad Charivilayil

How the Brain of a Blind Person Rewires Itself
Source:
http://sharpbrains.com/blog/2011/03/25/how-the-brain-of-a-blind-person-rewires-itself/

 By: Dr. Pascale Michelon
Do blind people really have a sharpened sense of hearing? What is the
explanation? This article reports the work of German researchers who
looked at blind people's brains to try to answer these questions. They
found out that indeed, blind people can understand speech even if sped
up beyond the maximum rate that sighted people can understand. This
seemed possible because the brain areas devoted to vision in people
with eye sight turned out to be responding to speech in blind people.
10 syllables per second [is] the absolute limit of comprehension
for sighted people. Blind people, however, can comprehend speech
sped up to 25 syllables per second.
brain scanner revealed that in blind people the part of the cerebral
cortex that normally responds to vision was responding to
speechsomehow an unsighted person's brain rewires itself to connect
auditory regions of the brain to the visual cortex.
A perfect example of neuroplasticity! Do you think this happens
 1) only in people who are born blind, or 2) only in people who lose
sight later in life, or 3) in both cases?
The answer is 2). Indeed, to be rewired connections need to
preexist. This is not the case in people who are born blind since
their visual cortex has never received any visual stimulation. It is
only in people who lose sight later in life, that the visual
connections can be rerouted to process auditory information.
 How does it work?
The fact is that most of our senses have some interacting circuitry
between them, which is called cross modality. [...] These connections
between visual and auditory regions of the brain become strengthened
 after losing sight.
Also, some regions of cerebral cortex that border visual and
auditory cortices [...] expand territory in blind people to make use
of the idle circuitry in visual cortex.

2014-03-21 Thread Naushad Charivilayil
Most of the time, we need to slipstream the drivers of our usb sound
device. Over last one and half years, I am working to solve some of the
major issues I encountered during my professional career. Even after
adding drivers to Win PE, sound card with complex structure will not
work. Some of the time, even USB sound card also failes work with newer
systems, because usb hub itself not supported with Win PE. In such case
we have to add necessary drivers of that particular system (chipset and
usb drivers) into Win PE image. Most of the time, this is not a
practical solution for a professional technician like me. Adding more
stuff into win PE will make it bigger in size and it will claim more
memory. The ultimate problem is, when we increase the size of Win PE, it
will not work with older systems with low memory.

Will it not work if I have a USB speaker or headphone?

no.
the drive letter x is associated with the virtual drive of win pe.
so look for any drive letter other than x.
regarding devices not working.
dont install windows from the win pe itself.
after your system is fully started up and nvda starts.
remove what ever is on your pendrive and copy the folders of the
windows that u want to install.
from your windows iso
after just run setup.exe and it will start installing.
winpe doesnt have drivers for all required hardware.
its a slimed down version of windows with just the basic kernel

[AI] Accessibility With 3d Printing

2014-01-11 Thread Naushad Charivilayil
You’ve heard of 3D printing from newscasters and journalists, astonished
at what they’ve witnessed. A machine reminiscent of the Star Trek
Replicator, something magical that can create objects out of thin air.
It can “print” in plastic, metal, nylon, and over a hundred other
materials. It can be used for making nonsensical little models like the
over-printed Yoda, yet it can also print manufacturing prototypes, end
user products, quasi-legal guns, aircraft engine parts and even human
organs using a person’s own cells.

To perform a print, the machine reads the design from an stl file and
lays down successive layers of liquid, powder, paper or sheet material
to build the model from a series of cross sections. These layers, which
correspond to the virtual cross sections from the CAD model, are joined
or automatically fused to create the final shape. The primary advantage
of this technique is its ability to create almost any shape or geometric
feature. To perform a print, the machine reads the design from an stl

Re: [AI] About front pannel query.

2013-10-17 Thread Naushad Charivilayil
You have to enable front audio in realtek hd audio manager, located at
control panel.
Keep in mind, by enabling front audio, radio interference may increase
in audio stream. The wire connected to the front audio will work as a
radio antenna. So, static noises may interfere with your audio listening
experience.

Re: [AI] Anyone proficient in Java with screen readers?

2013-09-17 Thread Naushad Charivilayil
Hi, to learn java, you must install one of the java sdk version and java
access bridge, and add appropriate values to windows environment
variables. To write a program in java, you only need windows notepad.
Use windows command prompt to compile your program. When you are dealing
with command prompt, NVDA provides more flexibility than jaws. According
to my opinion, Thinking in java by *Bruce Eckel* is the best book
available for beginners. In most advanced level, you can use accessible
integrated development environments like java eclipse. If you need any
help on this matter, please contact me off-list.

Hi, if you want to tackle this problem, purchase a tapi (Telephony
Application Programming Interface) compliant external or internal
modem, and attach it to your computer. For a laptop, external USB
modem will be the only choice. After that, you install those programs
from the cd provided by the manufacturer. Most of the times those
programs may not be accessible with jaws or other screen readers. If you
are using jaws, you can use hotspot clicker utility script to make it
accessible. Use a good sterio headphone with mike to receive calls from
customers. If you turned-off sterio-mix property of the sound card,
customer will not hear any disturbance from screen readers. If everything
goes right, certainly, customer will feel disturbance only from your

Over the last year or so, I have been trying to use more and more of
NVDA though Jaws remains my primary screen reader. As so many people
have already pointed out, the Jaws cursor like functionality is a
difficult part. As Harish Ji has already pointed out, the steps are
not as complicated as they might sound , but it is difficult to
understand at first, particularly for a Jaws user.
Another issue is with Jaws scripts, life is made so much easier with
Jaws with applications like Skype and GoogleTalk. Jaws can kind of
work with these applications, particularly the former without scripts
but not that well. I find the experience is same with NVDA, if they
could integrate the functionalities provided by Jaws Scripts to NVDA
as well, things could become a lot better.
Another thing might be specific to my style of use. I like the Jaws
function of Jaws key + Enter moving the web page by a few frames,
particularly useful when reading newspapers and such stuff. Has to
keep arrowing down in NVDA and that is something I really don't like.
This is a wonderful initiative and I hope NVDA continues to evolve and
go from strength to strength.

I am pasting an article about how to enhance dream below.

Acetyl choline Dreaming

Acetyl choline is a neurotransmitter, a chemical that carries messages
between brain cells. Most dreams occur during rapid eye movement, or
REM, sleep, when
acetyl choline levels are high, as they also are during alert
wakefulness. By observing the effects of deficiencies, scientists know
that acetyl choline
is essential to sleep, dreaming, learning and memory, although the
precise nature of the connection is unclear. A healthy diet gives you
all you need, but increasing your intake of foods rich in lecithin and B
vitamins might help encourage more vivid dreams.
Boosting the acetyl choline in your diet may encourage vivid dreams, but
dream researcher Ryan Hurd advises exercising caution before taking
dream-enhancing
dietary supplements, since they can also encourage nightmares. According
to Bastyr University, foods containing lecithin, often added as an
emulsifier
to mayonnaise, sauces and dressings, promote the production of
acetylcholine in the body. Eggs, seafood, beans, broccoli, cauliflower,
dairy products,
nuts and other foods rich in B vitamins are all sources.

DREAM RESEARCH

Much is known about the physiology and biochemistry of sleep, yet why
dreaming is vital to mental and physical health remains a disputed
enigma. Some researchers
maintain that dreams are the sleeping brain's equivalent of deleting
junk email to highlight more important messages. Others ascribe great
significance
to dream imagery, believing it to be the language used by the
unconscious to communicate with the conscious mind. Harvard University
emeritus professor
J. Allan Hobson, a modern pioneer of dream research, theorizes that
whether asleep or awake, the mind has an overwhelming need to extract
meaning from
experience. A simpler theory holds that sleep and dreams are simply
nature's way of keeping us out of trouble at night.

My friend, I heard your speech several times at different place. You
understand one thing, private sector always consider visually challenged
employees as their last resource. Certainly they are giving employment
to someone, only to fulfill social responsibilities. I highlight this
point from my experience with private sector. I think, this is because
the influence of social media like, film, news papers and tv channels.
They always try to highlight our incapability.

There are many company such as Pwc, Pepsi, etc.
Please state facts before you reply.

Hello All,

Adding few points :

1. Keep private sector as your last option for employment as government
or public sector has more benefits / security.

2. Equal opportunity employer is just a buzz word as MNC's do not follow
anything and their policies change with countries.

3. Hiring a disabled in private sector is just branding exercise and
fulfilling social responsibility clause.

4. Private sector do not have any policy for promotion , salary
revisions or benefits to PWD's .

5. Private sector will keep PWD's on contracts and there is no arbitrary
or legal protection.

Hi Govind !

You can address me in whichever manner you are comfortable with, dear.
I am always available at 098 472 76 126.

I agree with Rajesh's views about the public sector under-utilising
persons with disabilities, but, frankly, in these tumultuous times, with
EMI payments on home, car or personal loans dangling over one's head, it
is indeed a comforting thought to know that one's payslip will keep
arriving without fail till the age of retirement. (smile)

Having said this, I must hasten to add that even PSUs are not actually
safe enough, as I myself discovered in 2004. The then NDA govt was
following a policy of strategic disinvestment (viz. diluting a majority
stake in public sector units) and a moratorium on retrenchment was
built into the Share Holders' Agreement that afforded protection of just
one more year of service to the unionized workforce (not officers). The
companies that were disinvested (like BALCO, Modern Food Industries
Ltd) etc promptly restructured their workforce exactly at the end of
one year of disinvestment, giving a golden handshake to its disabled
employees. I had lengthy telephone consultations with Dr Uma Tule, then
CCPD, and legal experts like Dr Bhushan Punani (BPA, Ahmedabad) and they
were unanimous in their view that the PWD Act's protection was available
only when the government was in control in a unit. The fate of disabled
employees in a company after disinvestment was a gray area (and still
is, if I am not mistaken) and this was one of the motivating factors for
me to opt for voluntary retirement when the Govt put my previous
employer on the chopping block.

Public sector banks are safer since there seems to be some consensus
among political parties that they should not be privatized. However,
the safest bet is joining the Government itself. One can find
fulfillment in life through other avenues, you know, once financial
security is ensured.

A lot of so-called equal opportunity employers quietly dumped their
disabled resources during the melt-down in 2008. Similar trouble lies
ahead with clouds gathering in the economic firmament.

All the best for your hunt for a safe harbour...

Hi Sudeer If I can address you as,
I accept all your views and opinions expressed on the 12th of this

Private companies may provide you with lot of luxuries to get their
work done, but we should always be ready to face cyclones in the form
of global economic recession, performance appraisals, quality
assurance and so on.
I've been working with different private companies including GE global
servicing in hyderabad for the past 3 years.
I've just started struggling to find a good place in the public sector
units.

We can assume human brain as an information limited sub-reality machine.
Human brain create a sub-reality about what you see, hear, touch or feel
through the skin. This phenomenon is called persistence. Remember, when
your conscious, brain create a sub-reality, that happened micro-seconds
ago. Same way, Brain can create a sub reality in the form of dreams
because of your previous experiences like, peculiar thoughts,
persistence of your surroundings, fearful experiences during your
childhood period and so on, in the presence of subconscious mind. In
this case your brain does not have previous experience of vision. So it
is impossible to get a dream with eyesight.

Hello all,
I lost my vision gradually and now even no light perception. If I am
talking about dreams, no any difference between present and past. Same
human being’s faces, moments and world which I saw earlier. In my
daily routine life, I feel same visualization of objects, places and
relatives of which I saw in my past. Many times, during conversation,
my mind starts to imajine very minor human actions like moments of
eyes, lips, nose, including entire body according opposite person’s
voice and situation. So several times, I forget whether I have really
no vision. I don’t know it’s a power of strong imagination,
visualization or memory. Yes, it’s true, now having no colour
perception, my mind doesn’t focus on colouring world, so many times, I
use to ask colour of objects, and then no problem!
Still waiting for experiences of totally/blind members.
While writing mail, one more query, Is there any devise which can show
our visualization or night dreams? Really smiling.
Thanks a lot for all interest.
Bijal.

Did you lose your eye sight instantaneously (as in an accident like
Harish) or over a very brief period of time (like Payal ) ?

In such cases, the images stored in your brain must be crystal clear
till the n- 1'st moment.

In my case, I lost my vision over a 10 year deteriorating period
Perhaps, my brain stored progressively degraded images.

Does this explain the difference between the two sets of contradictory
reports ? (smile)

Hi,
My experience is totally different. I still see the images and
colours and evrything else as vividly as I used to. I can even see
the faces of people exactly as I remember them and also as Harish
wrote of those I have never seen.
Best regards,
Sandeep

This is surprising, since I was under the impression that the brain
continued to store information with data integrity even long after the
individual could actually recollect it. I have read about experiments
where electrical stimulation of brain areas made the person actually
hear a song long after he had ceased to remember it. Your considered
