Regarding mouseover links, raise that on the NVDA Users list, I'm not fully sure of that. Him Prasad Sir, Excellent and appropriate analogy used to describe the situation between the two. JAWS must have had been the first in the screen reader industry, but, NVDA is changing the situation by offering amazing competition to JAWS, that too, at no cost. Vedprakash Sir, The bottomline of yours, and others' messages is to try and improve the product you like. There were some bugs and limitations of NVDA which I reported myself, and were fixed eventually through code contribution from the community more than the lead developers themselves. Bravo!!! Very well written and forcefully said! Completely second your views! Sent: Friday, February 20, 2015 11:15 AM Subject: [AI] sanitary napkin vs tampon? threading, plucker,or waxing? oops or only electric shavers? Dear all, Greetings from Mumbai. i have read the very interesting discussions going on on this list, and i would request someone to provide me with the guidelines of the list again- it seems we are pushing boundaries each time. In a very recent eenthusiastic thread active on the list i can only say that it is shocking how couple of points could be related to blindness or accessibility: -what should be done first, trimming or shaving -how much time does a shave take -if someone has a hard growth or a soft one -how to clean the blade -getting rid of the pubic hair the first one or two exchanges were okay or could be directly/indirectly related to accessibility but seriously the 37 others that followed? these are only a few out of the many objectionable contents. As a woman i can and will share my idea that this list suddenly seems like an electronic space invader. for those who dont know who space invaders are, let me tell you. they are those men who share a two seater bench with a woman and take up three quarters of that seat/bench. now why do i say that ? because the gendered discussion going on this list reflects a very strong patriarchal attitude and male hegemony. i can see how objections by women were royally ignored. it is not about personal is political but about the boundaries of a said list and where i choose to be. if Access India decides that the boundaries have changed and they are okay with gendered discussions and personal matters that concern the blind then just for a minute reflect on this. Women will absolutely bring up the accessibility of a sanitary napkin vs tampon. i am sure menstrual issues are of great concern to blind women. if toilet habits of men are okay being discussed here so should be that of women. and of course we will too indulge into enlighting discussions of whether waxing is more doable than self threading, and elaborate on how frequently will we have to do the hair removal, or which method will leave our skin soft and not let it go dark. well, i really cant miss out on personal is political. we could bring up sex positions on this list, because blindness leaves many people apprehensive about not having seen sex positions earlier and lack of that impacting their sexual lives. i work on gender, sexual rights, and disability so definitely this wont make me shy away. the point is that please tell us what is access India all about and some of us will be happy to decide whether or not we want to be in this space and of course others may choose to be here with full awareness of what can come up and will be acceptable. of course some others like me will start utilising the newly pushed boundaries! Happy to comply. I have been using it for more than a year now, and its advantage is that it can serve you even in noisy environments. However, if members know of sturdy and good quality watches which have tactile markings as well as audio time announcement, then do share, I would consider that as a watch I could buy in the future. By the way, if you are afraid of buying a tactile/Braille watch because you fear moving the hands of the watch, then do not worry, since you will need to touch the watch very lightly and gently to know the time, 99.9% of the times, nothing should happen to the hands. Until rescently, one could easily get Chineese radios which covered a decent spectrum of the shortwave and also had the TV bands. Those are no where to be found in any shops and even online. Being a radioenthusiast, it was pretty disturbing. Online I could find only on Rediff shopping store 2 decent model which covered the entire shortwave spectrum, one was a not known brand, maybe Chineese for Rs. 800, considering the situation, I bought Sony ICF SW11. Sony radio's are known to be long lasting and therefore I made the pick. It is good on sensitive, selectivity and sensitivity. It also covered the Long wave band which does not pick any station in our region. Although, this was very expensive, I think it is a good buy. I am just letting folks know, maybe you probably have the last chance on picking a radio. FM radio's of course are available in plenty. Harish. You have summarised it perfectly. - Original Message - From: "Preeti Monga" To: "'AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerningthe disabled.'" Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2014 10:29 AM Subject: Re: [AI] my quriyocity are normel peopleintrested in marrying blind partners Interestingly it is irrelevant alright! The only thing is that sighted people are not conditioned to marry us blind people. The idea sounds crazy to them! And interestingly blind people want only to marry them sighted people! This kind of marriage is a marriage of convenience! But, usually these kind of marriages do not last... and if they do... they are only being pulled along because parting ways is not liked by society! As you may know, I married twice and both my husbands are sighted! No I don't live with them both! I had to leave the first one for the compatibility was missing... and I did not know it till I began to live with him after we were married. But the second time over, everything in our marriage is not as it should be... my husband is ten years younger, sighted, his first marriage and belongs to a different class and cast! But, we have had seventeen years of a great partnership and friendship! Now don't tell me that this is one of its kind of case... for most of us are scared to be honest even to ourselves. If we make a mistake, we lack the courage to stop making the mistake and get away from it! We just keep living the mistake for making the correction and trying again is not welcome by society and family! What a waste of life? One only lives once and let us face the facts. Let us look for good human beings and not try to match requirements just as we do when we go shopping! For being single is much better than to live in a marriage with the wrong partner. He/she may not be good with you, but may just be the right one for someone else... so let us give ourselves a chance once again and live happily! I sent my written complaint to the local division of the BSNL. What can I do now? I am not thinking in terms of consumer court or things like that. I just want my problem solved. Where should I write? With Best regards, Amiyo Biswas. Cell: 91-9433464329 To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] how your internet functions?
Excellent! For the uninitiated , you have cleared many aspects of this facinating subject. Only the other day, I was asking about I P address. Today,I seem to understand a lot more. Please continue giving folks like us such useful info. Thanks a ton and the very best for your exams. - Original Message - From: "ruchir falodiya" To: "accessindia" Sent: Thursday, March 26, 2009 8:56 AM Subject: [AI] how your internet functions? good morning and greetings to all my fellow accessindians. yesterday, some1 on the list was asking about what is http://www part in the website? so i thought, being a student of information technology, i'd do a small review of how actually this world of internet works. though i'll try to cover most important topics, but if i skip something, apologies in advance. so, lets start! think internet is a virtual world of millions and billions peoples each having its separate identity known as IP ( internet protocol ) this IP actually connects your virtual representative in the world of internet to the real world. an IP can be of various classes depending on its arrangements of numbers which tells every1 that who is the provider of your internet connection, your geographical location in the world and then a unique groups of digit code to identify its you. for an example 124.234.138.38 is in IP of some1 connection from Oklahoma, and this can be braked into following order. 124=the provider. 234= the the location of the provider's hub ( this is how peoples can be traced out ) 138.38 = your unique code and identifier which, no1 can have when they are connecting to the internet. now, this world is governed and operated by the set of some rules for connecting, requesting resources, sharing resources, pinging the other IP's etc. these rules are defined under every operating system, failing that you wouldn't be able to connect. these rules are known as tcp ( transfer control protocol ) the other most common protocols you mite be frequently be using are http ( hyper text transfer protocol ) and FTP ( file transfer protocol ) the http is a medium of transferring web pages or other resources for your web browsing which may include elements created in HTML ( hyper text markup language ) and jawa, flash, php, asp, etc. and the FTP generally works in the background for uploading and downloading of files. there are also various ports ( a type of communication channel ) and are ranged from 0 to 9000 ( though i'm not sure of this exact figure. ) each port is either open for a specific purpose or is closed. if you do not have a firewall and anty virus, and by chance any of these port is left open insecurely, that is an invitation to hackers to intrude into your computer. it mite be worth knowing that identities can be spoofed or changed for illegal purposes ( like wearing a mask ) to disguise the identity and then we have distributed denial of services and ping floods but that is really the darker and horrible side of internet which, being a hacker for 3 years i've seen and i really recommend please, stay away from hacking and such stuff, it sounds very intriguing, but the theory follows, if you brake some1's thing, some1 else will brake your things too. be prepared. getting away from that topic, let us now take a live example of what happens when you connect to internet. when you try to establish a network connection, your TCP/IP set of rules tries an establishes a link to the local internet service provider telling so and so client wants to connect. your local server looks up into your monthly quota ( if any ), and check other constraints. if everything goes well, your server returns a link connection's port ( through which you and server is connected. ) now you opened your web browser and enter. http://www.gmail.com your web browser sends a request to local server and then, your local server looks up on satellite for the domain gmail.com on www web directory. there mite be number of servers in between you and the destination gmail.com and you can trace the path also. just open command prompt and type in tracert www.gmail.com a number of servers along with their IP is returned telling you what is the path used in connecting you to the gmail.com hosting server. also, remember that every website is hosted on some special type of faster, more efficient and bigger computers known as servers, which are online 24/7 and many of these servers are stored safely and securely in data centers. having very strong connection having speeds in hundreds of MBPS so they can serve to thousands of client requests at 1 time. also, few peoples, while connecting to internet via lan or modem gets confused that their actual speed of connection is 100mbps. please understand that, the 100mbps is the speed of connection between your lan and modem, and is really no where near to the actual speed you are getting which, is also known as the bandwidth. coming back to the poi

Re: [AI] few of my personal opinions and tips
Could yuou please let us know from where to obtain the free anti virus AVIRA? - Original Message - From: "ruchir falodiya" To: "accessindia" Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2009 10:24 PM Subject: [AI] few of my personal opinions and tips hello every1 at accessindia! greetings to all :) many a times, friends from this list, or even outside this list, often asks me 1 very common question. " as you knows a bit about internals of computer, being able to research on internet, and since your last xp format was 2 years ago, what basic softwares you use?" so i thought, i'll just let my opinions to be posted here at accessindia. it is not compulsory that every1 will agree with me on many terms, and maybe my small research on net maybe not very very accurate, but here is the list of softwares and websites that i use very often. i'm running windows xp service pack 3, on a 1.6 mobile centrino p4, with 2 gb of ram, and 160 hard drive. 3 years old laptop, produced by compaq. dont have the model number, sorry :) for anty virus, my favorite is free version of avira anty virus. i've seen this1 perform better then even some payed anty viruses and definitely better then other free anty viruses like avast, and a v g. although, the accessibility is a issue with it, but i've never needed to change its by default options, and i can always bring up the context menu, and hit enter on scan with avira option so there's no problem for me. because of its daily updates, ability to scan rootkits, and with little playing around, understandable, non graphical menus, i'd recommend this anty virus to all. for compressing and decompressing archived files, i use 7zip. this provides maximum compression and can also create executable files, known as SFX ( self extracting archives ) the menus are very much like win rar or winzip. and above all, it is a freeware! for the media player, i've been using kLite media player which can play almost every file type but creating playlist, and other complex audio related tasks are not possible with it. due to its simple interface, easy to use menus, and being a freeware, this have been my player over 2 years now. i've been using mozilla firefox because of web visum, and also because it doesn't automaticly runs active exe contents , jawa applets, and even it asks you to give permission if the page tries to refresh, or reload on its own making navigation hard this is also, more secure then internet explorer, hence less spywares and active exe viruses. it also have wide variety of free add-ons, making it more flexible and user oriented. Thunderbird is my mail client, because i've configured my gmail with it with imap access, and even when it is not very different then ms. outlook, due to its simplicity and frequent securities updates, this has been my mail client over an year. rest, i use ms office 2003,( cuz i'm just being lazy to install play, and learn 2007,) skype 4.0, live messenger 8.5, NVDA as my portable screen reader, jaws 10.0 as main screen reader and Kurzweil 1000 version 11.03 as other important softwares. i've also been using spybot as an anty spyware, and zoneAlarm free version as extensive firewall. presently, i'm using net from gprs of airtel, making my nokia n72 as modem using Nokia PC Suite 7.0.7.0. i've been using www.techtree.com to get the latest technology news, and www.softpedia.com to download softwares. and have important wijits at I google, which is also my homePage if you have any further queries in relation to above mentioned or any software, please feel to contact me at skype: ruchir89 msn: ruchir_falod...@hotmail.com email: ruchir.falod...@gmail.com mobile: +919829675073 i'm also present on orkut, facebook, and linkedIn, feel free to add me :) with warm regards, ruchir. -- As long as forever, I will stay by your side, I'll be your companion, Your friend and your guide!!! www.ruchir89.wordpress.com To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] any notebook users on the list?
Lenovo S10 The Lenovo S10 Netbook offers a sleek, stylish and compact, light weight machine at a very reasonable price. Available in multiple color options, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 offers a more unique design, depending on your own tastes. With a high quality LCD screen, fast CPU and plently of storage space the Lenovo S10 ranks highly against some of the better netbooks currently available. Key Features List of 6 items . 10.2? WSVGA AntiGlare LCD 1024×600 . Up to 1GB DDR2 RAM . up to 160GB HDD 5400 . Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 . Integrated Webcam . ExpressCard Slot list end List of 6 items . Windows XP Home . 802.11b/g WiFi / Bluetooth . 3 Cell Lithium-Ion Battery . 9.8 in (W) x 7.2 in (D) x 1.1 in (H) . 2.6 lbs list end Reviews The Lenovo S10 IdeaPad S10 some nice touches: a stylish and compact chassis, full-featured back-up software, a speedy hard drive, and a screen with great viewing angles. Unfortunately, it also has a smaller keyboard and touchpad the MSI Wind. Consumers who want the most compact and stylish 10-inch netbook on the market will look past these flaws and snap up the Lenovo S10. Source: Laptopmag | Rating: 3.5 Rating If you're looking for a big, beefy hard drive and surprisingly sprightly performance from a mini-notebook, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 is a solid pick. The Lenovo S10 offers enough perks to make it a top pick for serious mobility. Source: PCWorld | Rating: 4 Rating Lenovo's "me, too!" entry in the Netbook sweepstakes, the IdeaPad S10, gets the price and features right, but falls behind on battery life. The battery lasted about as long as other 3-cell Netbooks we've tested, such as the MSI Wind, coming in at 2 hours and 13 minutes on our video playback battery drain test. Source: CNet | Rating: 3.5 Rating The ExpressCard slot gives you the option of adding more USB ports, Firewire, eSATA, or any number of other ports to the Lenovo S10. Ultimately, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 is a great ultra-portable laptop priced below $500. However, if you're willing to put up with a bulkier notebook then it's still possible to find a computer with more features and performance for almost the same price on sale. Source: NetbookReview HP Mini 1000 The HP Mini 1000 is the second netbook from HP, after their more business aimed Mini Note 2133 earlier in the year. With a great design and build quality the HP Mini 1000 looks sleek and professional, with out looking cheap like some other netbooks. With an excellent nearly full sized keyboard (92%) you can type much easier than most other netbooks, and with impressive specifications the HP Mini 1000 looks to be one of the very best netbooks so far. Key Features List of 6 items . 10.2 or 8.9-Inch LCD . 1024 x 600 Resolution . LED Backlit LCD . 2.25 lb. . Near Full Size Keyboard (92%) . Windows XP Home . 10.3 in (L) x 6.56 in (W) x 0.99 in (H) list end Reviews HP may have arrived late to the consumer Netbook game, but by lifting the generous keyboard from last year's business-oriented model, the Mini 1000 easily joins the category's top tier. Best Netbook keyboard we've seen; thinner and lighter than HP's 2133. The only bad: Limited expansion options and an overly glossy screen. Source: Cnet | Rating: 4 Rating Currently, more than ten mini-notebooks are available with identical 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processors and Windows XP Home operating systems. But the HP Mini 1000's stylish and seriously compact chassis, crisp and bright screen, and outstanding keyboard elevate it above most of its competitors. Those wanting a stylish 10-inch netbook will be more than happy with it. Source: LaptopMag | Rating: 3.5 Rating The Mini 1000 offers the standout solid construction and comfort. The Mini 1000 is a worthy competitor in the netbook market, offering the small size of the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 without the compromised keyboard. Small, thin, and lightweight, the Mini 1000 offers perhaps the best netbook keyboard out there, as well as performance that matches the rest of the pack. Source: ComputerShopper | Rating: 4 Rating With the Mini 1000, you get a reasonably hard plastic lid with a groovy design on top. A fantastic keyboard with the main QWERTY and number buttons are large enough to fit your entire finger. Re: [AI] accessible mobile sets
Last month, I aquired Nokia 3230. The keypad is blind friendly and the price is reasonable -- Rs.6,800 approx. It works well and I'm quite satisfied with it. The Nokia 6600 is no longer produced. Re: [AI] history of computer education for blind in india
It's all very facinating ... looking back the years ahead will be even more interesting! In 1989, when I had been working for about 19 years at Tata Steel, my Company decided to import from the American Printing House for the Blind, Louisville, Ky, U S A, a hardware screen reader called the "Speaqualizer" - priced at $1,000 (the exchange rate then was Rs17 to 1 $). The Company also paid customs at the rate of 300% and the landed cost became Rs.68,000. This was a 8 bit device and worked with a PC XT. The sound quality of this device wasn't all that great but one got used to it. With the help of the accompanying manual and a very dedicated trainer from our I T Department, I learnt Word Star, dBASE3 and Lotus 1 2 3. I used the Speaqualizer for over 11 years and never felt the urgency to progress to Windows but after my early separation from the Company, my young friend Atul Sahay got me going on Jaws 3.81 after i Had bought my first computer which had the necessary RAM and hard disc space. This was 2001. If at anytime, a museum is setup, dedicated to the evolution of technology for the vision impaired, I will be only too happy to offer the Speaqualizer for prosterity to marvel over!
