[AI] Any UEB Enthusiasts Around?

2020-02-14 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello once again to all the AccessIndia mates!

I've since June 2016 been working on the Unified English Braille (UEB) and have
recently even volunteered as the instructor for a fortnight-long training
programme on UEB Mathematics for the teachers of a school for blind girls.

If there are any AccessIndia list members working on the UEB (i.e. learning the
UEB, teaching the UEB to others, transcribing braille books and other materials
in the UEB, or have access to UEB materials), I would love to get in touch with
those fellows!

Regards.

Sincerely,

[AI] Fw: JAWS or NVDA? Which is better with mathematical texts?

2019-10-29 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi AccessIndia mates? How are you?

For those of you who are interested in accessibility of mathematical content,
there is a mailing list by the name of BlindMath.
I've just posted a message to that list, and I'm forwarding that message to
AccessIndia as well.
Please carefully read the following message and see if you can reply to my
queries with any info of value!

better with mathematical texts?
Hi BlindMath mates? Hope you're fine.
My name is Saaqib Mahmood, and I am a visually impaired (i.e. partially
sighted) person from Abbottabad, Pakistan; I have got an MPhil degree in
Mathematics and work as Assistant Professor at a mainstream government college.
Although I at present can read printed materials and ebooks in PDF or DJVU
format by turning on High Contrast (Black), I still need to be able to use JAWS
or NVDA properly in creating and accessing mathematical materials in case my
eyesight deteriotates too much in future.
Besides, just yesterday, a student of the MSc in Mathematics program of the
University of Peshawar contacted me and told me that he is losing the ability
to read print as his eyesight is declining steadily.
In this backdrop, I request the help and support of the BlindMath community and
enable people like me and that student to better access mathematics books using
the commonly available computer screen reading software programs such as JAWS
and NVDA.

My first query is which of these two programs (i.e. JAWS and NVDA) allows
better accessibility when creating or accessing mathematics content?
How accessible using either JAWS or NVDA is  the task of creating mathematical
content using MikeTex, for example?

And, how accessible is each one of these programs when accessing mathematical
content using programs such as Adobe Acrobat Reader (for PDF documents) and
WinDjView (for DJVU files)?
I hope the members of the BlindMath community will take time answering my
queries in detail.

Regards.

[AI] Is Wren & Martin's High School English Grammar & Composition Available in Braille in India?

2019-07-29 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello to everyone in the AccessIndia community! Namaskaar!
Is the book HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION by P.C. Wren and H.
Martin available in Braille in India?
If so, who has published it?

Has this book also been published in the UEB yet by any agency in India?
Last but not least, can somebody here please share with me via email a PDF file
of this book such that that file is accessible using screen reader software and
also such that that file includes the proper typeform indicators (i.e. bold,
italic, and underlined) as used in the original book?
There is a copy commonly available on the Internet but that copy is without the
typeform indicators that the original book has.
And, there is another copy also available on the Internet but with the problem
that this PDF file is not properly accessible using JAWS at least, and the OCR
process available in JAWS again skips the typeform indicators (i.e. bold and
italic).
Hoping to hear from somebody in the AccessIndia community soon.

Sincerely,
Saaqib Mahmood

[AI] Has Any Low Vision Person Here Tried This Device From APH?

2019-06-23 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Good Morning to the entire AccessIndia family. Hello!
My name is Saaqib Mahmood, and I'm a visually impaired (i.e. partially sighted)
student of mathematics, with an MPhil degree in the field and working as an
assistant professor at a government college.
During my college and university studies in mathematics (and computer science),
I have been at a particular disadvantage dut to my inability because of my
eyesight problem to see the board while in the class.

Accordingly, throughout my college and university (i.e. Intermediate,
Bachelor's, Master's, and MPhil) years, the tutorial offered by the institution
had very little use for me since in mathematics classes most of the times
content is taught through writing on the board and pointing to the stuff
written on the board.
So I had to put in extra effort poring over books and running after the
teachers, when they could be available, for explanation / clarification in the
material.
Just a few minutes ago, while searching for information on a braille-editing
software called BrailleZephyr, I've stumbled upon the VisioBook:
Portable Electronic Magnifier and Distance Viewer from the American Printing
House for the Blind (APH), Inc.
Here is the link to the APH page containing information on the VisioBook.
https://tech.aph.org/vb_info.htm
Now my question is, is there any low vision person over here who has either
personally used this product or knows someone else who has used it.

If so, then I would like to know as to how effective this device is in enabling
the user to view objects --- especially the characters and symbols in medium to
large fonts written on the board in a classroom --- from distances of, say,
three to four feet.
If possible, please leave a WhatsApp number so I can contact you to hear from
you about your personal experience of the device.
Regards.
Sincerely,
Saaqib Mahmood,

[AI] Fw: Gene Therapy For Restoring Vision / Stopping Vision Loss

 Dear Mr. Mahmood,

Thanks very much for resending. It sounds like you have very
early onset vision loss. Have you previously had an
electroretinogram to confirm that your vision loss is due to

Dear Mr Mahmuud,Without genetic testing it is not possible to know for sure,
but given the connections between your mother’s and your father’s families
there is a reasonable chance your disease was inherited in an autosomal

Yes, I am searching for options here in Pakistan of genetic testing, an

Dear Mr. Saaqib,

If your parents were related it is more likely that your form of retinitis

it may be amenable to gene replacement therapy depending on the type of genetic

Thank you so much, Dr Duncan, for such a prompt reply.

Yes, my maternal grandmother and my paternal grandmother were first cousins.

And, my paternal grandparents were also first cousins: my paternal
grandfather's father was an elder (full) brother of my paternal grandmother's

What spin, if any, does either one of these two facts about my ancestry have on

Dear Mr. Mahmuud,

Thank you for your email. In fact, the most common scenario for patients with
autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa is that there are no other people in
the family with similar symptoms. This is especially likely if there is any
connection between your mother's family and your father's family. Autosomal
recessive retinitis pigmentosa occurs when patients inherit 2 copies of a
changed gene that does not cause vision loss when only one copy of a changed
gene is present. Since a patient with autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa
has 2 copies of a changed gene, he inherited one from his mother and one from
his father.  Each parent only had one changed copy so the parents and all the
other relatives likely had normal vision. Each child the parents have together
has a 25% chance of inheriting both changed copies of that gene and having a
vision problem, so if that is the case in you, each of your brothers and
sisters also has a 25% chance of having a vision problem. I ho

[AI] Request for Advice / Suggestions

2019-05-18 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello Access India mates? How are you?
My name is Saaqib Mahmood. I'm a 40-year-old visually impaired person from
Abbottabad, Pakistan. I have an MPhil degree in Mathematics and have been
employed as a college teacher in the Department of Higher Education, Government
of NWFP since August 2006.
Despite my visual handicap, I have enough eyesight to be able to read and write
the ordinary inkprint from about six inches or so though not in the sunlight. I
am comfortable reading books on a PC (especially those in the DJVU file
format). However, I am also familiar with JAWS as well as braille. In fact, I
have two certificates from the Hadley School, USA, in the Unified English
Braille (UEB) from the Hadley School for the Blind, USA, and have completed the
UEB Online course offered by an institution in Australia.

Should I be looking for opportunities of pursuing my PhD degree in Mathematics
or some related field at any university in India? Will it be a good idea?

What kind of response am I likely to get should I apply for admission to a PhD
programme at a university in India?

Am I going to be able to avail any facilities / concessions that are available
to the blind and visually impaired students?
Which universities should I particularly focus on?
Anybody over here who could extend me any direct help and support?

Regards.

[AI] What is the future of braille in India? Any UEB enthusiasts around here?

2019-04-09 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Good evening AccessIndia mates! Wish you all the best of life!
This is Saaqib Mahmood, a visually impaired (i.e. partially sighted) person
from the town of Abbottabad (read Abbott Aubaud) in Pakistan. I've got an MPhil
degree in mathematics and have been working as a government college teacher
since August 2006.

I've introduced myself again for the benefit of those who've never read my
posts on AccessIndia.

I've since mid-2016 been into learning and mastering the Unified English
Braille (UEB). During this while, I've completed three UEB courses over the
Internet: the UEB Online course offered by a Renvick Center for the Blind &
Deaf, Australia, which is available at the website http://www.uebonline.org and
two courses from the Hadley Institute for the Blind & Visually Impaired, USA.
I've for the past several months been also reading through the UEB Rulebook
Second Edition 2013, in which I'm currently at Sec. 13 Foreign Languages.

Are there anybody over here who is also working in the UEB (i.e. learning or
teaching the braille code)? If so, let us connect using email or WhatsApp so we
could benefit from each other's experiences.
More broadly, with the advent of computer and mobile phone access technology
tools for the blind and visually impaired people, what is the future of braille
in India? Is braille --- especially the English braille --- still relevant in
India and is going to remain so in the years to come?

[AI] Any Blind Or Visually Impaired Bollywood Singer?

2019-04-03 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello AccessIndia mates? Hope you're all fine.
I've got a query. I'm wondering if there is, or ever has been, a blind or
visually impaired singer, lyricist, or music composer in Bollywood.
If not, then what are the causes of this absence of the blind community from
one of the fields in which they could potentially do well?
As a fan since mid-to-late 1980s of Bollywood singers like Muhammad Aziz,
Suresh Wadekar, Udit Narayan, Shabbir Kumar, Kawita Krishnamurthy, Anu Radha
Paudwal, along with Muhammad Rafi, Asha Bhosale, Lata Mangeshkar, and Mukesh,
I've since boyhood had a dream of singing in the Bollywood.
But I ended up opting for a career in mathematics instead.
Even now I sometimes yearn to migrate to Mumbai and join a music academy, if
any, run by Muhammad Aziz or Suresh Wadekar.

[AI] Anybody Around Here Who Is Learning Python Or Who Is A Python Programmer Using JAWS Or NVDA?

2019-01-31 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello AccessIndia mates? How are you?

Although I'm a visually impaired person, I'm able to view the computer screen
using the High Contrast (Black) setting in Windows along with such mouse
enhancements as the Windows Inverted system scheme and enabling the display of
the pointer trail.

I've in October 2018 completed the course Introduction To Computer Science &
Programming Using Python offered by the MIT, one of the world's best
institution of higher learning, through the web platform http://www.edx.org.

During the winter holidays of January and February, I've begun upon the book
Automate The Boring Stuff With Python by Al Sweigart and have so far reached
Chapter 6.

However, I've so far not used JAWS in this endeavor. Hence my query over here,
which is as follows:

How good a job does JAWS do in providing accessibility support to a visually
handicapped (especially totally blind) Python programmer or learner of this
programming language?

>From the posts on that MIT course, I do remember now that, there was a
>visually challenged person from India too, but I might not be able to track
>him now.

Is there anybody on AccessIndia who is pursuing Python programming using JAWS
(or NVDA)?

If I remember correctly, the Mitra Jyothi also conducted a course on Python. Am
I right? Any instructor(s) or trainee(s) from any of those batches?

2019-01-23 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
There are a number of courses and programs, including those in computer
science, available through http://www.edx.org.

I in October 2018 completed the course INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE &
PROGRAMMING USING PYTHON offered by the Massachussetts Institute of Technology
(MIT) through the edx.org platform. Visit

https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-using-python-0

And, in July 2018 I completed a C++ course offered by Microsoft. Visit the
following link.
https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-c-plus-plus-3

Most of these courses are free for learning but getting completion certificates
cost some money.

Nowadays, I'm reading the book AUTOMATE THE BORING STUFF WITH PYTHON by Al
Sweigart. Visit the following link for an online version of the book.
https://automatetheboringstuff.com/

In 2002-03 I also read the book Schaum's Outline of Theory & Problems of
Programming with C by Byron S. Gottfried, but back then I didn't have access to
a PC; so I couldn't implement the example and exercise problems.

I've got several books on C++ in PDF format, including the book THE C++
PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE by Bjourne Stroustrap, 4th edition.

I'd be glad to be of help should you need it.

[AI] What is the best option for a blind person for reading scanned PDF documents / books?

2018-12-20 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi AccessIndia mates? How are you?
I've got a query.
We are running a volunteer service through which we are scanning hard copy
books and other printed materials into PDF files and providing those files to
the blind and visually impaired students and teachers; we are using Fujitsu's
ScanSnap SV600.
Now my question is, which is (are) the best option(s) available to a
print-impaired individual for accessing the material we provide to them?

Should they use JAWS OCR feature? Or should they resort to OpenBook? Or is NVDA
the best choice?

Or are there any other option(s) that are better than each of the above three?
Please also include a detailed enough how-to tutorial in your answer.
Regards.

Sincerely,
Saaqib Mahmood, a visually impaired person

[AI] Any Android-based PDF+DJVU+EPUB reader with an option similar to High Contrast (Black)?

2018-11-27 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud

I'm a visually impaired (i.e. partially sighted) person with some reading
vision unless in direct sunlight, and that too only from a short distance of
about six inches at most!

I'm a student of mathematics working as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at a
government college in Abbottabad.

In order to read electronic books (ebooks), I use WinDjView for .djvu files,
Adobe Acrobat Reader for .pdf files, and Epub Reader for .epub files on my
Windows-based desktop PC.

I'm nowadays using Windows 8.1 on a Dell PC and have the High Contrast (Black)
enabled.

In WinDjView and Adobe Acrobat Reader, I've also turned on the relevant
settings so as to enable me to view my ebooks as white (or light-colored) text
against a black (or dark-colored) background.

Without this sort of customization, I find viewing the computer screen
extremely inconvenient.

In order to be able to read "on the go", I'm now looking for a device such as
the Samsung's Galaxy Tab A (10.1'). Please visit the following URL for more
information about this product.

https://www.samsung.com/pk/tablets/galaxy-tab-a10/#specs
However, I'm not aware of any Android-based DJVU + PDF + Epub reader software
program that offers the High Contrast (Black) or a similar option.

Is there any such program? Is there any free app with this feature? What about
the Android app called EbookDroid? The reason why I'm not in favor of getting
myself a laptop is the disadvantage for me while using a laptop because of the
too close proximity of the screen with the keypad, and even using a laptop
computer with an extra keyboard isn't really convenient.

And, as far as mathematical content goes, the acessibility support available in
popular screen reading software programs such as JAWS and NVDA is very
elementary yet.

Any advice for me from tech-savvy members of the AccessIndia community?
Regards.

[AI] Any Computer Programming Courses via the Internet from India?

2018-11-13 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello AccessIndia mates? How are you?

I've just this October completed the MITx course INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER

this course.

In August this year, there was a post on this list, if I remember correctly,
from an organisation by the name of Mitra Jyoti inviting applications for
admission to their course on Python programming via Skype. However, I missed
the deadline due to some reason.
When is their next intake?
And, any other similar initiatives in India or abroad specifically for the

[AI] Which Hindi, English, Urdu, and Punjabi TV channels from India offer a free live audio stream over the Internet?

2018-10-21 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello AccessIndia mates? How are you?

Are there any English, Hindi, Urdu, or Punjabi TV channels in India that offer
an option to listen live to their transmission streaming over the Internet?

There is such a TV channel in Pakistan called Dunya News. You can listen to
their live stream at the following link.
http://dunyanews.tv/newsite/live_stream/audio.html
Are there any such TV channels in India too, especially those that broadcasts
in English, Hindi, Urdu, or Punjabi?
There are multiple advantages for having such a live audio stream, as you all
can imagine.

1. Listening to live audio stream doesn't require as much bandwidth as watching
live video does.

2. A live audio stream can get by with less Internet connectivity, at least as
compared to a live video stream.

3. Listening to audio is less demanding on the power battery of your cellphone
or laptop than watching video is.

Hence my desire to have such live audio stream of my favorite TV channels from
India, such as the NDTV (24 7 as well as India), Republic World, India Today,
Times Now, DD (News & Urdu), Zee News, Sahaara, and ETV (Urdu).

I know that some of these TV channels (e.g. the NDTV 24 7 and India) are  but
I'm not sure how current their apparently live broadcasts areavailable through
such third-party websites as http://www.tunein.com, but I would prefer the
listen live option provided by the particular TV channel itself.

Please do share any information you may have on this subject.

Can the management of any of these channels be approached to get them to
provide such listen live stream? If so, then please let us do so!

Regards.

[AI] A Request Worth Making: Seeking Broadening of the Scope of the AIR Programmes' Content

2018-09-26 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi AccessIndia mates? Hope you're having a good time.

I've got something important to discuss with you here.

I've been a listener of the All India Radio (AIR) through the medium and short
wave radio since my school days in the late 1980s, and nowadays I've been
listening to the AIR broadcasts through their live mobile app on my Android
phone.
There's one thing that often pinches me about the AIR programmes. There is
simply too much music, especially the Bollywood variety. Of the four or five
Hindi / Urdu channels available through the AIR Live mobile app (i.e. the AIR
FM Gold, Delhi; the AIR FM Rainbow, Delhi; the AIR Vividh Bharati, Mumbai; the
AIR Urdu Service; etc.), I've often noticed that Bollywood music is playing
concurrently on all of them. And, the same goes for the regional language AIR
stations available through the app.

Even the live running commentary of the cricket matches broadcast by the AIR is
not available through the app outside India; nor are stations like the General
Overseas Service of the AIR. And, there is simply no station from either Utttar
Pradesh (UP) or Madhiya Pradesh (MP) available through the live app, at least
outside India.

Nobody can dispute the worth of the Bollywood and its music, and the
contribution it has made to India's repute and prestige abroad. Bollywood music
is simply beautiful!

But the point is that the Bollywood music is available through CDs / DVDs and
several Internet websites nowadays even for free ( e.g., through
http://www.webmusic.in ). So perhaps the air time of the AIR could be better
utilised if AIR adopts an approach similar to the BBC. (Visit
https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ for listening to all the radio stations of the BBC
online.). Just like the BBC radio, there should be specialised AIR channels for
each of (Bollywood) music, sports, documentaries & currennt affairs, science &
tech, awareness & education, and so on.
On the BBC radio, especially on the Radio 4 and the World Service channels,
there are several programmes devoted to review and reading of books, and even
audio podcasts of those programmes are available for free download from the BBC
website. (Visit the following link for listening to and downloading the BBC
audio podcasts.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts )

The gist of my argument is this: we the  blind and visually impaired persons
should approach the management of the AIR and request them to come up with
programmes featuring the readings in sweet voices and proper accents of books
in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, and other languages of India, especially the classics
of the literatures of these languages.

And, we should also request the AIR management for programmmes on science &
tech, including the access technology for the blind!

This, I think, would be a much better utilisation of the air time and the
resources paid for with money of the public of India!

These programmes could also be made available for download from the AIR website
as audio podcasts.

And, I personally would also like to be able to listen to the AIR channels from
Lucknow, Bhopal, and Hyderabad.

Hope the AccessIndia community would find this message worth considering.

Regards.

Sincerely,
Saaqib Mahmood, a visually impaired personEmail: saaqib1...@yahoo.co.in

[AI] A Website For Learning Braille

2016-06-26 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud

Hi AccessIndia mates?

How are you?
May I share with you a website for learning the Unified English Braille (UEB)?

Beginning in January 2016, UEB has been adopted as the standard braille code by
all the English-speaking countries for transcribing print materials into
braille.

Here is the link to the home page of the UEB Online website.

http://uebonline.org/

A learner has to get him or herself registered on this site. Here's the link to
their registration page.

http://uebonline.org/getting-started/registration/

This site is as much for those sighted people who are interested in learning
the UEB as much as it is for the blind.

Regards.

Sincerely,
Saaqib

[AI] Has anybody on AccessIndia used this Dell model?

2016-06-21 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi AccessIndia mates?

How's it going?
Having used an Intel Celeron Pentium 4 computer with Windows XP since April
2004, I have now decided to upgrade and have pinpointed the Dell Inspiron 17
laptop computer, with a  5759 6th Generation Intel Core i5 6200U proeceeor, 8
GB of RAM, and 1 TB of hard disk storage.

Here's the URL of the page containing info about the device.

http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-17-5759-laptop/pd?oc=fncwu2434s&model_id=inspiron-17-5759-laptop
Has anybody over here used this particular computer, or any other Dell Inspiron
PC?

If so, what has your experience been like? Are you satisfied with the
performance?

How much is it --- I mean the brand new one --- worth nowadays in India?

Does the performance justify the price?
Regards.

Saaqib

Dear Rajesh Asudani,

Your concern is a valid one; the NCERT website isn't as easy to download from

However, all is not lost!

You can still download from the website.

But in order for me to show you how to download, we will have to speak on the
phone because now the procedure is a bit more complicated.

My contact information is as follows.

Re: [AI] Suggestion Required for ADF Scanner

Hi mates?

Has anybody used the Fujitsu's ScanSnap SV 600?

Here's the link.

This device, in my opinion, is much better suited to the job of scanning books
because you don't need to either unbind the book or place it face down on the
scanner bed.

I remember I've posted on AccessIndia before on this subject.

Re: [AI] prevent pdf files from opening in the browser

2016-05-20 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Dear Giriprasad,

In order to prevent a PDF document from opening in the browser and instead
downloading it onto your computer, do the following.

1. Move to the link to the document in question.

2. Right click on the link (or press the Application Key or Shift + F10) to
activate the context menu.

3. On this context menu, move to and activate (by pressing ENTER on) the menu
item called Save Target As...

4. This procedure results in the same Save as dialog box that, I'm sure, you're
familiar with. Save the file at your desired location.

In the above procedure, I'm assuming you are using the Mozilla Firefox web
browser.

Good luck.

[AI] How do I download and install the Liblouis braille editing software?

2016-04-30 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi dear BlindMath mailing list members? Hope you're fine.

I've learnt that there is an open source braille editor called Liblouis. Visit
this page.
 http://liblouis.org/

And, here is the link to their downloads page.
http://liblouis.org/downloads/

On this page, under the heading "Stable Versions" there are three items
available for download: a .zip file and two .tar.gz files. Am I right?

But the problem is I'm just not able to figure out exactly which file in any of
the three downloaded items should I run in order to install and run the
Liblouis braille editor on my desktop PC.

Can anybody please help me with this issue?

Hi AccessIndia mates?

Has anyone got any version with the license key of the Duxbury Braille
Translation software later than version 10.4?

The latest version is DBT 11.3, as far as I know, but it is only downloadable
as a demo.

Has anybody here got the DBT 11.3? And if so, can you please share the key?

[AI] A Link for Downloading School and College Textbooks of India

2016-04-22 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi AccessIndia mates?

It's approaching 2 am. Hope you're enjoying a nice sleep, unlike this insomniac
mate of yours!

Well, there has been some discussion of links for downloading NCERT textbooks
not working properly. Yes, the issue is genuine. They've changed their website
only to make things worse.

However, here is the link to a page where they've tried to gather textbooks
from several publishers, including the NCERT.

www.notemonk.com/

For example, you can access NCERT books from the following link.

http://www.notemonk.com/ncert/

And, the CBSE textbooks are available at

http://www.notemonk.com/cbse_books/

I've just downloaded Marigold, the NCERT English textbook for class 1. It's a
26 MB .zip file.

Have a happy journey downloading books, until some quirky fellow gets in the
way of these initiatives, which I'm sure you all through your collective voice
can prevent from happening.

Good night.

Sincerely,
Saaqib

[AI] Facilities that universities should provide to their blind and visually impaired students and staff

2016-04-20 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi mates? How's it going?

Why don't you visit the following page and see what kind of facilities are
available to students with disabilities at the University of North Caroline
(UNC) at Charlotte?

 http://ds.uncc.edu/service-providers/online-accessibility

There is no reason why universities in the subcontinent should fail to provide
the same kind of facilities to their students and staff with disabilities!

It is time we launch a concerted effort to bring this about.

On to another subject, is there radio station available on the Internet that is
broadcasting the IPL matches live?

[AI] LATEX: An accessible program for communication of mathematical content between the blind and the sighted

2016-04-14 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi dear AccessIndia mates? How's it going?

Let me share with you today something many of you might not be familiar with so
far.

There's a typesetting system called LATEX (pronounced as "latech"). It is
particularly suited to creation of professional looking mathematical documents.

LATEX is part of a larger system called TEX.

In order to set up this system, do the following:

Please note that this is the procedure that I follow; there are other software
for setting up TEX / LATEX.

1. Download the WinEdit text editor set from the following link.

http://www.winedt.com/download.html

Install WinEdit onto your computer. This program is free for use for up to
one month, after which it will continue to work, except that it will keep
poping up the reminder for registration. So you can remove and re-install the
program to get rid of those reminders. The latest version as of now is 10.0.

2. Download and install a program called MikeTex (pronounced "mic tech") 2.9
and install it onto your computer. Here's the link for downloading it fro free.

   http://miktex.org/download

The latest version of MikeTex available as of now is 2.9.5872.

Try to leave the default options unchanged during the installation of either
program.

Once these two programs are successfully installed, open WinEdit, press Alt + D
to go to the Document menu, and then press ENTER on the New Document ... menu
item. The shortcut keystroke for these two actions is Shift + Ctrl + N.

This will open the New Document dialog box, with your focus in the list of
document type options available. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to explore the
options available here.

Now press ENTER on the following option: Latex: AMS Article.

This will open a LATEX document with the document template of the American
Mathematical Society (AMS) loaded, with the typing cursor placed in the area
for entering your desired title for the document.

For this intro, first go to the top of the file with CTRL + Home, and read
through the entire document character by character, trying to make sense of the
content of each line, until you reach the end.

Now go to the line with the following text in it.
\begin{document}

Press the Down Arrow key once, and then delete everything before the start of
the line with the following text in it.
\end{document}

Now press Alt + A to go to the Accessories menu and activate the Compile
command. Alternatively, you can also press F9 to compile your document.

Since up to this point we have not saved our document, we will be presented
with the same Save As dialog box which we're all used to in MS Word. In this
dialog, save your file by first creating a new blank folder, and then name and
save your file in that new folder.

Now place your insertion cursor in the line after the line which contains the
text, \begin{document}, press ENTER, and then type the following. JAWS users
please read character by character.

$$ \frac 1 2 + \frac 3 4 = \frac 5 4 = 1 \frac 1 4. $$

Or, write

$$ \frac{1}{2} + \frac{3}{4} = \frac{5}{4} = 1 \frac{1}{4}. $$

The double dollar signs signify the beginning and end of the mathematical
content on a line of its own.

The string "\frac" means fraction.

If either of the numerator or the denominator consists of more than one
character, then we will write

\frac{ numerator }{ denominator }

JAWS users please read these lines character by character.

Of course you would replace the word numerator with its corresponding value,
and same for the denominator.

Next, compile by pressing F9 or by pressing Alt + A followed by ENTER.

After a little while read the title of your window (for JAWS users), and you'll
notice that you are in Adobe Acrobat Reader and the fraction addition is
showing in the PDF document with the same name as the name that you've given to
your file.

This PDF is more useful for a sighted person; a blind person can go through the
original latex code and decipher whatever mathematical content is contained
therein.

For more information about LATEX, visit the following pages.

mathematician. Here's the link.

[AI] What Facilities Are Visually Handicapped Students Entitled To At Universities In India?

2016-03-23 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi AccessIndia mates?

Congratulations on India's convincing win over Pakistan last weekend and their
narrow victory against Bangladesh just awhile ago!

I have a couple of questions regarding the facilities available to the blind
and visually impaired students at Indian universities.

Are visually challenged students entitled to

1. full or partial exemption in tuition fees and other charges at universities
such as JNU, Univ. of Delhi, Univ. of Mumbai, and the IITs?

2. avail any other special facilities and / or accommodations?

3. admission on some special quota reserved for them? If so, how much is this
reservation?

4. any facilities for studying the Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) subjects?

5. Jinnah of Pakistan by Stanley Wolpert
6. Gandhi's Passion by Stanley Wolpert

[AI] What is the difference between these two options for embossing of books into braille?

2016-03-18 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi mates?

Hope you're doing well.

I have a question regarding embossing into braille of printed materials,
especially mathematical content.

We have access to OpenBook for scanning and OCR, the DBT for braille editing,
and the Index Braille's Everset-D V4 embosser.

Option 1. We scan a print book using OpenBook, convert it into a Microsoft Word
document, and thn emboss it into braille using the Everest-D V4.

Option 2. We painstakingly prepare an electronic braille document (or a bunch
of documents) using the DBT software and then emboss.

What would be the difference in the braille output between the above two
options, (i) in case of literary materials and  (ii) particularly in case of
mathematics and science books?

[AI] Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600: How suitable do you find this device For Scanning and OCR of books?

2016-03-18 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi mates?
How's it going?

I've got a query relating to scanning and OCR.

Blind and visually impaired students and teachers need to do a lot of scanning
and OCR of printed books.

With the common flatbed scanners, putting the book face down on the scanner
bed can lead to the book spine to get damaged;
sometimes the page doesn't scan properly due to
thickness of the book.

Here's the link to a couple of page containing information about a scanning
device that I think would be more suitable for this purpose.

This device is called the Fujitsu's ScanSnap SV600.

Manufacturer's pages:

1.
http://www.fujitsu.com/global/products/computing/peripheral/scanners/scansnap/sv600/

2.
http://scanners.fcpa.fujitsu.com/scansnap11/features_sv600.html

My google search page:
https://www.google.com/search?q=Fujitsu+ScanSnap+SV600&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Has anyone used this device? If so, what is your experience like of its
performance?

Do you find  this scanner to be any better for the job of scanning and OCR of,
say, a 800-page book?

Regards.

[AI] A program for learning to type

2016-03-01 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Keystroke is an advanced, cross-platform typing program. It has a range of
features that make it ideal for learning privately, or in a classroom setting:

    It's 100% free!
It works natively with your screen reader be it VoiceOver, Window Eyes,
JAWS or NVDA.
It runs on Mac 10.10+, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10
It works with a braille display, and thus is accessible to the deaf-blind
or ESL users.
It has a "Keyboard Assistant" to provide feedback if you're pressing keys
incorrectly. (example: "The l key is 2 keys to the right")
It's very lightweight, only an 8MB download.
It's default lessons are designed to teach students to type correctly with
both hands.
You have the ability to add, edit, or remove your own custom lessons.
You have the ability to import other people's lessons or export your own.

[AI] A Link for MP3 Audio Books for Free Download

2016-02-28 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello mates? How's it going?

You might fancy downloading and listening to free audio books from Pakistan
Urdu / Hindi in the .mp3 format from the following link.

https://www.sendspace.com/folder/szivsj

You can begin with Amrita Prittam's "Rang Ka Patta". Here's the link.

https://www.sendspace.com/file/v5xr06

Here's the link to Mumtaaz Mufti's "afsanas".

https://www.sendspace.com/file/tblkjc

Oh, and do listen to "Umrao Jaan Adaa" by Mirza Haadi Beg! Here's the link.

https://www.sendspace.com/file/cs1u89

What I do not like about this collection is that the books are abridged and
perhaps the file sizes are a bit too large for the .mp3 format.

Regards.

[AI] T20I Asia Cup 2016: Live Radio Commentary

2016-02-27 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello to everyone here on the AccessIndia forum.

A few days ago, someone, probably from somewhere in Europe, inquired about an
Internet radio station broadcasting the ongoing Asia Cup T20I matches.

Well, I've just checked All India Radio FM Gold at www.webcast.gov.in, but the
currently in progress India-Pakistan match is not being broadcast.

However, a live commentary of the match IS being broadcast by Radio Pakistan.
Visit the following link.
http://www.radio.gov.pk/#

Then click "Audio Streaming", followed by "WMA MP3" on the top left corner of
the pop-up control that appears upon clicking "Audio Streaming".

Hope all the cricket-loving blind people would find this enjoyable.

[AI] Fujitsu's ScanSnap SV600: A Potentially Best Scanning and OCR Solution for the Blind

2016-02-26 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello mates? Let me share with you something that, I hope, many of you are
going to find interesting and useful.

Blind and visually impaired students and teachers need to do a lot of scanning
and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of printed books.

With the common flatbed scanners, putting the book face down on the scanner bed
can lead to the book spine to get damaged; sometimes the page doesn't scan
properly due to thickness of the book.

Here's the link to a couple of page containing information about a scanning
device that I think would be more suitable for this purpose.

This device is called the Fujitsu's ScanSnap SV600.

Manufacturer's pages:

1.
http://www.fujitsu.com/global/products/computing/peripheral/scanners/scansnap/sv600/

2.
http://scanners.fcpa.fujitsu.com/scansnap11/features_sv600.html

My google search page:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Fujitsu+ScanSnap+SV600&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

A page with price info in Pakistan:
 http://www.symbios.pk/scansnap-sv600

Have anyone of you actually used this device? If so, do you find  this scanner
to be any better for the job of scanning and OCR of, say, a 800-page book?

I would be eagerly awaiting your feedback.

Regards.

[AI] What is it like in the educational opportunities available to the blind in India?

2016-02-24 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello mates?

I have a query.

What is it like as far as education of the blind in India is concerned?

Is the trend of spceial schools for the blind more common and popular?

Or, is there a trend toward a mainstreamed, inclusive educational system where
blind pupils are taught at schools for sighted pupils?

What is the situation prevailing

1. from class 1 to class 5?

2. from class 6 to class 8?

3. from class 8 to class 10?

4. from class 10 to class 12?

5. from class 12 onward?

In India, is there any "college for the blind"?

[AI] Request for the latest edition of the book INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS by Peter Norton 6th edition or later

2016-02-18 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello mates? Hope you'll be having a good time.

Can anyone please share with me a link for downloading either of the following
two books?

1. Introduction to Computers by Peter Norton, 6th edition or later

2. Computers -- Tools For An Information Age by H. L. Capron, the latest
edition available

I would like to have access to these books in either .djvu format or as a .pdf
file which JAWS can read.

I've had the chance of downloading it from somewhere the 6th edition of
Norton's text, but that file wasn't readable with the help of JAWS.

And, I doubt if NVDA would be able to do a better job of it either.

Regards.

Faithfully,
Saaqib

[AI] Anybody at AI who's into JAWS scripting, programming, or similar high-tech computer-related jobs?

2016-02-17 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello to everybody at the Access India list.

I would like to remain in contact with some blind or visually impaired person
who's into JAWS scripting, computer programming in general, or similar
high-tech things related to computer and IT.

I would like to have their advice on how to learn these fields and inculcate
this knowledge into other blind and visually impaired people.

I hear there is a blind man from India, named Akhilesh, who is working for
Google. Is it so?

[AI] Request for Novel "Chandni Begum" in MP3 Audio

2016-02-09 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Can anybody please send me a link for downloading the novel "Chandni Begum"?

I've been told it is available with Saksham, but I'm not a member of theirs and
not even sure if I'm even eligible to get their membership.

So I would be grateful if someone could send it, and it would be an unabridged
version, I hope.

[AI] To introduce myself to the AccessIndia community

2016-02-05 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello to everyone here at the Access India forum.

I'm a visually impaired person with an MPhil in mathematics, and I've been
teaching mathematics as a lecturer at a mainstream college in the provincial
government's department of higher education department. I've also been a member
of the RNIB from 2004 to 2006.

I've also been a Hadley School for the Blind student since Nov. 2004 and have
so far completed courses in English, the Nemeth Code, word processing, the
Internet basics; nowadays I'm pursuing a course on the Unified English Braille
(UEB) and chess!

Though I know braille and am familiar with JAWS and MAGic, in my teaching of
mathematics [ I've been for the last few years teaching analysis and functional
analysis to the BS in Mathematics students.]  I mostly rely on my residual
vision: I'm able to read the inkprint and write using my eyesight, though from
a distance of hardly six inches and that too not in the sunlight!

My schooling started at a local school for sighted children in 1986, where I
stayed for less than a year before being admitted to my local school for the
blind in 1987, and I stayed at that school till 1994, when I passed my
matriculation examination and joined college [It was the same college where I'm
teaching now.] Even during my studies at that school for the blind, I remained
in touch with the inkprint reading and writing (entirely on my own!) and so was
able to start college without having to use braille or audio.

At college, I opted for mathematics, statistics, and economics as  my
intermediate-level subject combination, but our mathematics education at the
school for the blind was extremely poor! My eyesight problem and poor financial
family background [My father worked as a truck driver.] meant that I had to
mostly do without any tutorial support; the result was that in my Higher
Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) I could manage to score only 62%.

Although I kept myself in touch with inkprint right through my blind school
years, my handwriting was still too slow and child-like even when I joined
college, resulting in my compulsion to rely on a sighted person to write my
exam papers for me, which is a not-so-easy task in mathematical subjects.

I had to engage a sighted person as a writer in my HSSC, 2-year B.Sc., and
2-year M.Sc. exams. It was only in my MPhil coursework that I could muster
enough confidence in my handwriting to write my own exam papers. The difference
was that, unlike my previous board and university examinations which had all
been under an annual system and marked externally, the MPhil papers were set
and marked by the very instructor who was teaching the course.

I also started learning JAWS scripting back in 2005 but then couldn't hold on
to it due to one reason or the other. Nowadays, I'm learning the Python
programming language from a video course taught by a Prof. John Guttag back in
2011 and now available at the MIT Open CourseWare (OCW) website.

Although I did study one semester of M.Sc. in Computer Science back in 1999, I
would still rate my computer experties at the beginner's level (or
thereabouts). I feel that I started on so many things without being to stick to
anything in particular.

I post my question to a webstie called Stack Exchange, particularly on the
Mathematics Stack Exchange. Here's the link to my MSE profile.
http://math.stackexchange.com/users/59734/saaqib-mahmuud

I occasionally post on Facebook as well and have liked the NDTV Facebook page,
as well as that of Burkha Dutt. BBC Urdu and Hindi are both my favorites
(perhaps the latter more than the former); I also would like to be able to
access Doordarshan Urdu.

I've also been a reader of the Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind from Aug.
2001 till Nov. 2009, when they stopped their braille edition.

Due to my rather limited Internet bandwidth, the live video streaming is often
not good enough; so I wish that NDTV 24 7, NDTV India, and Doordarshan each
could also start a live audio stream, just like the live audio streams of Dunya
News TV, a  Pakistani  channel. Would anyone here also like to concur with me
on this point?

I think I've introduced myself quite thoroughly (a little too thoroughly, I'm
afraid). Anyway, should anybody like to get in touch with me, here's my contact
information.

Mobile Phone Number: 0092-346-952-7638
Number for WhatsApp: 0092-334-541-7958
E-mail: saaqib1...@yahoo.co.in

I can also give out my postal (or geographical) address, should anybody want it.

I would be glad to socialise with members of the Access India mailing list
community and be helpful in whatever way I can.

Regards.

Sincerely,
Saaqib

[AI] Request for Audio Tutorials on Scripting in JAWS 17

2016-01-18 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hi to all of you at the AccessIndia mailing list!!

In 2005, I had a chance of listening to a series of MP3 tutorials on JAWS
scripting; I tried to practice and follow along with each lesson.

However, that tutorials was a bit too brief. Moreover, both Windows JAWS have
come a long way since then.

So, I would appreciate some link(s) for a more detailed and comprehensive JAWS
scripting tutorial --- in text, audio, or video --- based on the more recent
version(s) of JAWS, esp. JAWS 17.

Please also feel free to share similar information for other advanced topics
related to JAWS.

Regards.

[AI] A Few Queries: Please Answer If You Have The Relevant Information

2016-01-08 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello everyone at the AccessIndia mailing list.

I have the following queries--- some general and some blindness-related:

Are there any solar-powered room heaters, air conditioners, ceiling fans,
refrigerators, or any others of the common home appliances? If so, which items?
And, who are the international manufacturers of these items?

Where on the Internet can I download the Bharati Urdu braille code in PDF
format?

Is there any individual or organisation in India who can donate braille books
in the Urdu language?

Is there any website from India which offers audio books --- in Hindi, Urdu,
Punjabi, or English --- for free download?

Last but not the least, how good is the latest version of JAWS for accessing
mathematical content --- either in PDF documents or on the Internet?

Regards.

Saakib
