Re: [AI] Course of accessibility certification

2020-04-30 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi Mohit,

There is a certification renewal with IAAP. You can read more about it at
https://www.accessibilityassociation.org/content.asp?contentid=395

In short, IAAP certification is valid for 3 years. Every three years,
certificants will be required to:

- Complete a specified number of hours of continuing accessibility education
credits (dependent upon credential), which must be approved by IAAP
- Submit an application for certification renewal
- Pay the certification renewal fee at time of renewal. For IAAP members, the
renewal fee is waived as part of your membership benefits as long as your
membership has not lapsed during the three year period.

Let me know if you have any other questions about IAAP.

Re: [AI] Netflix started providing Hindi audio descriptions of some of its Hindi web series in India.

2020-01-20 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi All,

I had reached out to an Amazon Prime person who is focusing on Accessibility
with this thread. He has shared the below:

"Thank you for forwarding the feedback. Amazon Prime Video does have Audio
Descriptions for a all English Amazon Originals. Would you be able to pass this
on to the customers and see if they are able to see AD. Customers should be
able to turn on Audio Descriptions by playing a title and changing the audio
language to English [Audio Descriptions] and it should be available on all
devices like mobile apps, or Prime Video website. If they are unable to play
AD, I would be happy to take a look."

Hope this helps.

I think we need to celebrate people with disabilities everyday of the year!

Technically as per RPWD, there are 21 disabilities listed and Low Vision &
Blind are listed separately.

I would recommend you take on the definition with the Department, Government or

[AI] Newz Hook Clarification on Ajay Minocha Story

2019-10-06 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi All,

At Newz Hook, we pride ourselves is sharing stories about the amazing work
being done by people with disabilities, their achievements, their challenges.
There is so little done to share the good that is happening around people with
disabilities.

We, Newz Hook stands by our story regarding Ajay Minocha being the "first blind
CFA charter holder from India. The only other CFA charter holder has low
vision. He also has the relevant work experience required for the CFA charter
which makes all the facts stated true.”

We understand that some confusion may have arisen over the initial headline
which said Ajay Minocha is the first VI person. Upon receiving an update,
NewzHook immediately corrected the headline to say first blind person

We would also like to congratulate Ajay Minocha for having achieved this. We
don’t want to take away from any other person, but we believe that successes
like this need to be shared and applauded.

Thanks

Shilpi Kapoor

CEO, Newz Hook

I tried 6by6 in my Moto mobile phone. Android 7 version.

Its accuracy is good. Nearly 75 percent of the results are correct.

It is quick also.

Good effort.

Thank you.

Re: [AI] Currency Detector

2019-01-14 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi Ravi,
Thank you for your mail. Please do provide suggestions to help us better this.
We have tried to reduce the time to recognize and also have ensured that the
app works offline.

We are currently working on getting some of the new notes added to the dataset.
I do agree that we should be able to add new currencies as they get added and
that is exactly our endeavor.

It would be great if you can share you contact information at
6...@barrierbreak.com and all of us at 6 by 6, would be happy to work with you
and anyone else on this.

We understand the challenges and look at technology as an enabler not a
replacement to accessible currency.

Appreciate your feedback and thoughts on this.

Regards
Shilpi

Subject: Re: [AI] Currency Detector

Hi, 6 by 6 team, thanks for your efforts in bringing some kind of
solution to the problem of currency recognition through an android
app.
As this is still in the starting level or at the developmental stage,
there might be some problems while recognizing notes and other
problems.
I'm glad to try out your app and provide you with constructive
feedback so it might be helpful in making still more improvements.
I don't have any mind of commenting about your app severely, because,
I'm glad you are trying to do something useful to visually impaired
community I'm glad about that.
I can agree with the opinion that, when we are outside it poses a
problem in instantly recognizing the notes quickly while paying at an
establishment, maul, taxy drivers etc.
So my suggestion is, if possible, kindly reduce the time the app takes
to recognize a note, if possible, it should be very short.
If the time of recognition is reduced, it will surely reach it's purpose.
Further, Some say, the currency have to be made accessible for
visually impaired, Yes I Agree with the statement, "they should be
made accessible."
However, there are many flaws in the idea, or, the approach to it has
to be considered in a different manner.
For example, if they make some notes with some markings which can be
felt by us and find out what denomination it is, many of the times, as
the currency flows through many hands and through ATM's, those
markings on the note get very soft or undetectible as time passes.
Further, When we say, currency should be made accessible, they cannot
withdraw all existing notes of every denomination and reprint them
with accessible marking or any kind of accessibility.
For that, alternatively We can notify the proper powers to bring some
kind of app or a gadget which might assist us in the day to day
problem of identifying currency notes.
Okay, some people may not be having android phones, or still might be
using older phones.
One solution for all this is, bringing a portable, light wait,
handheld, miniature, battery powered, chargeable, device, about the
size of the regular debit or credit card, which should recognize the
note when placed on it, or something near to that.
which should be accurate and should be able to recognize currency
notes of every denomination within the time of one or two seconds and
give audible feedback to the user in the kind of speach what value of
note it has detected.
And, later, if any changes are made to any notes, or if any new notes
are released, the device's software should be able to update over our
phone's bluetooth or by connecting it to our computer like that, so it
will be having updated software about the newly released notes also.
If this idea is incorporated and some proper people and powers take
interest in the matter, this might become a very useful and final
solution for all the problems we are having in day to day transaction
of our indian currency notes.
Hope this is not negative in any manner.
Thank you.

Great to see this dialogue!

In general, technology can assist to make our lives easier. How we use it and
in the situations we use it, will depend on us.

Technology always comes with its pros and cons and doesn’t take away from the
actual solution being accessible, which in this case is currency!

Technology is a choice and it depends on the people who find it useful. I think
this is true to all things technology.

[AI] Currency Detector

2019-01-09 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi All,

With all the conversation around challenges with the currency, BarrierBreak has
taken the initiative to develop an app called 6 by 6. 6 by 6 has 3 different
tools and another few are being built. The 3 tools are:
- Currency Detector
- Light Detector
- Magnifier

This app is currently on the Android platform and can be downloaded from the
Playstore -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.barrierbreak.fin=en

We know that some of you'll are already using it and we have received feedback
which we have incorporated also. We know that some currency notes are not as
well recognized like the Rs. 50 note and are working on this.

Instructions to help you get an accurate prediction -

- Hold the Currency between 5-6 inches from the phone.
- Place the Currency on an even surface or in a straight position in your palm.
- Tap on the screen to get an accurate prediction.

We have also made some videos to help you use the app better -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqu_Yw0EWeQ

It would be great if you'll would download the app and give us feedback, since
we would like to make the app better. Please feel to write to us at
6...@barrierbreak.com

We will also be holding sessions in different organizations to show the app to
your students and members. If you would like us to hold a Free session at your
NGO, School or College, please write to us at 6...@barrierbreak.com

Re: [AI] For accessibility tester career option

2018-12-30 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi Mohit,

With regards to IAAP Exams, there are 2 exams. I am also providing the link to
the Body of Knowledge (BOK) which is a great place to start to prepare for the
exams:
1. CPACC - https://www.accessibilityassociation.org/content.asp?contentid=356
2. WAS - https://www.accessibilityassociation.org/content.asp?contentid=458

If you do pass both the exams, you have the accreditation of CPWA.

For an accessibility tester role, the WAS exam is what I would recommend. It is
an exam, where you have to go beyond the theory and ideally should have working
knowledge.

BarrierBreak's office in Mumbai holds the proctored exams for people who would
like to give the exam using assistive technology. You can see the dates at
https://www.accessibilityassociation.org/certification#Exam%20Locations

Hope that helps.

[AI] #Accessibility #DailyDose - Language

2018-06-21 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi All,

I know a lot of you are interested in knowing more on accessibility. I write a
post on weekdays on LinkedIn on #Accessibility. Thought I will post it here
also for the benefit of people from Access India.

You can also connect with me on LinkedIn or then follow my Twitter feed to get
access to this also.

#Accessibility #DailyDose

If you speak in English, French or Hindi for that matter, don't you think it
would be helpful for people to know what language you are speaking in.

Well, the same applies to your web page content.

Specify the HTML lang attribute whether at a page level or if you have a
paragraph in a different language. Something so small can let the screen
reader choose the relevant voice, can assist in your search engine results or
even to translate content to a language you understand.

Thanks

Re: [AI] Narrator as a screen reader come of age

2018-06-12 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi All,
Great to see this dialogue on screen readers and what do we teach and what do
we use.

Here is my two bits and I won't go to the point of saying teach one or another:
- We need to ensure that students have an early initiation to Screen Readers.
They should be able to access technology as early as their peers. What we have
to teach is the concepts of the screen reader! For example, what is a desktop,
what is a start button, how does it behave, what is a page, how can we use the
calculator. At that stage, even a Narrator is great as exposure. Let's
understand that Narrator is getting better. It is already in the operating
system, it has no additional cost. I honestly believe it is the right step at
schools.

- As the needs of the person increase on what they have to do, then the choice
of screen reader is based on what they want to do with it. If the usage is for
Excel and at that point NVDA or JAWS is better for their work, that choice
should be theirs and based on the use case.

I think instead of worrying of which is the right screen reader, we need to see
how to make screen readers that important tool early on in students lives.

After teaching loads of people computers and hiring lots of people with
disabilities, we need people to be agile in their use of technology. In
technology, you have to be able to adapt.

I hear Vasu, when he says reasonable accommodation. But I also know that as
organizations we decide what technology a person will use. That is the reality.
You find some people say we use a particular software as an organization, must
be as simple as Skype for Business and another might say we use Zoom for the
same purpose of online conferencing.
We need to be ready to explore different solutions.

Regards
Shilpi

George,
Here is a link to Keyboard commands of Narrator:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/22806/windows-10-narrator-keyboard-commands-touch-gestures

Harish, I respectfully disagree to the point if organizations have
restrictions to downloads applications such as NVDA; that's a reasonable
accommodation and organizations cannot deny. Until Narrator comes to a
decent level where we can use on usual applications like excel etc., I
would not prefer providing this as an otpion to use at organizations.

Thanks,
Srinivasu

[AI] How are people with disabilities perceived by themselves and others?

2018-05-29 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
A Blog Post that is written by Shilpi Kapoor

Let me start by saying this is my view and I am sure lots of you may agree or
disagree with me and I am fine with that! It's good to have differences.

Yes, I believe people with disabilities can do everything. Let me say this
again, I believe that people with disabilities can do everything.

In a way, I have proved this through Barrierbreak, where people with
disabilities co-exist with everyone.

In the last 18+ years, I have interacted with so many people with disabilities.
Each of them see’s themselves differently. Again exactly like the rest of the
world and why not:
• Some people believe that they have been brave leaving their house
irrespective of their disability. This might be a small achievement for some
but a very big thing for that person.
• For others, they have managed to travel the world and might look that
leaving the house as a too small an achievement
• Some people believe that they would like to be referred to as
differently abled, others people they should be called people with disabilities
• Some people believe that they can do everything and others might doubt
themselves and need support

People have different thresholds, skills, ambitions, etc. People interpret
their own challenges, opportunities, achievements as they see them. Let’s
celebrate the differences. I am not saying this for only society at large but
it’s also about how people with disabilities see themselves as well as each
other.

Let’s embrace that! Let’s not question it.

Let’s inspire people to jump the hurdles that life gives them and celebrate the
small and large wins.

As I am writing this, doesn’t it sounds like each & everyone of us?

Since I founded, Newz Hook – India’s first Inclusive & Accessible News Media
site focusing on disability, accessibility and inclusion, these differences
have become more apparent to me.

We share news and stories about people and these people view themselves in a
certain way. Who am I to judge. What we are here to do is share their stories.

My own and my editor Shai Venkatraman’s opinion aside, it’s about the people!

Let’s come together to change attitudes towards people with disabilities!

Hi George,

You can buy a lapel mic and connect or a wireless one also, so that can be on
you and the clarity would be there.

Hi!

Looking for simple ideas in terms of getting good quality recording while
shooting videos on an iPhone.

When shooting a video, we are atleast 9 to 10 feet away from the speaker or
singer. This has an impact on audio recording quality. Is there any tech
solutions to improve the audio ?
