Subject: [AI] Union Bank of India’s digital accessibility initiative

Dear Friends,

Pleased to share a new initiative in the area of digital accessibility
enhancement by one of the largest public sector banks in India, Union Bank of
India.

Myself and Rahul Gambhir are now team members of Union Bank’s dedicated project
named as Union Access. We are fortunate that we have been resourced by the
bank. We share a few of the steps initiated by the bank at the initial stage
of the project.

1. A committee of top executives on accessibility enhancement.

2. Published accessibility statement on bank’s corporate website

3. A full day quiz on inclusion and accessibility for 75,000 employees on
the Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2022 was organised to spread mass
awareness.

4. e-learning modules added in the bank's online learning system on
disability inclusion and accessibility.

5. Outlook 365 webmail with JAWS manual is compiled and made available on
bank’ intranet.

Union Bank of India, the first Indian organization which aims to follow the BIS
Indian standard on accessibility of ICT products and services.

We are working towards achieving incremental progress. We are counting on
affirmative support and guidance from our mentors, friends and members of this
list.

Please provide your feedback / suggestions to the bank's project Union Access
dedicated email id
unionacc...@unionbankofindia.bank<mailto:unionacc...@unionbankofindia.bank> on
digital accessibility.

Thanks and regards,

Prashant Naik

Pigtails. Frock. Knee-high socks. Ribbons. Don't even get Soumita Basu started
on the ribbons. "I want to burn them," says the chic Kolkata-based fashion
entrepreneur who finds it ridiculous when Hindi movies dress people with
disabilities like they were "little kids". Usually found in the kind of
wrap-around saris and airy kurtas that convey her easy, mature demeanour, the
38-year-old's sophisticated wardrobe was born out of her desire to burn
something else: a shawl that sat heavy on her frozen shoulders for three
Kolkata winters. That was the time a debilitating autoimmune disorder called
psoriatic arthritis had started in her 'gugai' — the nickname she had given her
sausage-like painful toes — before it spread to other joints that winced each
time her caregiver tried to get her into the sleeves and necklines of oversized
clothes. Able-bodied till the age of 30, Basu had to abandon normal clothing
when the condition relegated her to a wheelchair. Unable to find elegant
options to keep her warm, her mother would wrap her in a shawl in winter and a
stole in peak summer. Desperate to shed these skins that required constant
adjusting, the former social research and communications specialist decided to
style her skirt as a dress and prop the stoles as sleeves. The experiment paid
off. "I became my own muse," says Basu, recalling the string of ensuing trials
and errors which led to the pre-lockdown launch of her own inclusive fashion
label that offers everything from wrap-around saris that can be worn lying down
to mastectomy gowns that have secret passageways for fluid pipes connecting the
breast area with the pockets carrying fluid bags. Welcome to adaptive fashion,
a fledgling Instagram-based world that sees designers and entrepreneurs across
the country fiddling with metal snap buttons, zippers, velcro, magnets and
other stitches in time that would make dressing up not only easier but also
dignified for those with disabilities, the elderly and others constrained by
conventional clothing. Internationally, the most prominent face of this space
is Los-Angeles-based disability fashion stylist Stephanie Thomas, who was born
a congenital amputee. While two major global apparel brands have started
selling button-down pants and other "adaptive" wear, in India, though, the
fashion market tends to disappoint the nearly one crore people living with
disabilities. "The world's largest minority are arguably stigmatized by the
majority of current clothing solutions," feels Keralabased fashion designer Joe
Ikareth, whose search for solutions for his daughter Tilotama — who has a
partially paralyzed right arm — led him to develop artisanal clothes based on
creative movement therapy, a field of psychotherapy that uses "personal
movement language" and dance for the health and wellness of an individual. Not
too far from his Kochi boutique, lives the creative mind of fashion designer
Ashima Bhan, currently preoccupied with waterproof umbrella cloth after getting
a call from the caregiver of a bed-ridden mentally-challenged patient from
Gurugram who soils his bed clothes every night. Though inclusivity has become
something of a buzzword in the fashion industry, Anita Iyer Narayan of Ekansh
Trust, a Pune-based NGO, recalls finding no sponsors for their adaptive fashion
show in 2019 for which they had approached garment firms and fashion labels.

Dear All

Thanks for replying to my mail.

I too feel that this is violation of equality, as visually impaired cant drive
even modified car. Neither it's necessary that one travels in self owned car.
Hence why shouldn’t visually impaired be eligible for this benefit?

I know so many individuals in this group can throw light on this and together
take an action to get it amended.

Seeking your cooperation.

[AI] Query on Toll Tax Exemption for Disabled Persons

2019-03-03 Thread sushmee...@voicevision.in
Dear List Members

Greetings for the day!

I hope you all are aware about the UID card issued to disabled by Indian
Government. I was told that using this card one can avail toll tax exemption on
National Highways.

I did get exempted on various cases using this card. But last Friday one of the
toll collection officer said that only modified cars can avail this benefit and
charged toll from me.

After doing some research I found the below article which confirms terms
mentioned by the officer.

But my question is how can a visually impaired benefit from a modified car.
Also what if the car is not in my name or its not a privately owned car,
shouldn't I be eligible for this benefit?

Request you to share your findings and feedback on this. Also share what is the
solution for the same.

Awaiting your positive reply.

Pasting below the article I found.

Toll Tax Exemption for Disabled Persons
Did you know that disabled persons are exempted from paying toll tax on all the
highways operated by the NHAI? There is a notification from the NHAI regarding
this.
Vehicles especially designed for the use by persons with disabilities are
exempted from paying toll tax in India. This exemption is applicable at all
toll plazas on all the highways operated by the National Highways Authority of
India. Please note that the toll tax exemption is valid only for the vehicles
modified for the use by a disabled person. Section 2(18) of the Motor Vehicle
Act, 1988, defines such vehicles as "invalid carriage". So, your vehicle's RC
must show the vehicle registered under the invalid carriage category.
A disabled person traveling in a regular car shall have to pay the toll fee.
The government amended rules to this effect and published the amendments in the
Gazette of India on 08 June 2016. An NHAI notification about this change was
issued on 13 June 2016 with circular number NHAI/CO/11//2016.
As per the 2011 Census, 2 crore 68 lakh people in India have disability. But
only a very small percentage of these people drive a vehicle. Introduction of
measures like toll tax exemption and excise duty concession will help making
persons with disabilities drive their own vehicles and become self-dependent.
In practice, while seeking the toll tax exemption, the driver of the invalid
carriage will have to show relevant documents. For example, RC showing
registration of the vehicle as an invalid carriage. Showing these documents and
convincing the toll booth operator takes time. As a result, the vehicle queue
at toll plaza piles up.
To resolve this, the government has moved a step forward. Now the government is
providing free FASTag for the vehicle registered as invalid carriage. This tag
allows you to zip through the toll booth in a matter a seconds.
Should you have any question on this subject, please feel free to ask. Also, if
you can contribute more information on this topic, please let us know. Sharing
information is extremely important for the welfare of persons with
disabilities. Thank you for connecting with WeCapable!

It is really sad to hear about Ram Babu. He was the one who introduced Voice
Vision to TISS and enabled us to present so many papers, couple of which were
jointly with him.

I was aware about his medical issues, but he always said that its curing. I
really feel sad and bad for his parents at the senior age they had to suffer
from such a great loss.

I pray to God that his soul rests in peace and give enough strength to his
family to bear the loss.

Subject: [AI] AccessIndia migration issue

All

I hope you have received the announcement of migrating to new domain. If not,
let share the good news that the list has successfully migrated to the new
domain on InclusiveHabitat.

Hopefully you would have got that mail. If not, please check on the Spam folder.

The id to make the post is a...@accessindia.inclusivehabitat.in

You may start making the post anyways on the new ID. In case you had set rule
with [AI] in the subject line, it will still hold good.

It may be possible, initially there would be a spert in traffic because
of the migration, I am sure it will get to normal level soon.

I would particularly like to thank everyone in showing exemplary
discipline during the period the list was on auto pilot mode. So, I am
now back in command of the situation and together we will journey to new
heights.

Yours always

[AI] how to educate railway [passengers?

2017-01-31 Thread sushmee...@voicevision.in

Dear Sazid

Great to know that you are daily addressing lots of passengers directly.

I hope you are guiding them or resolving their queries. Is it similar to an
enquiry counter or anything else.

My suggestion if its an enquiry counter, you can have a sign board saying
"Enquiry Counter", this will enable passengers seeking tickets not to reach out
to your counter. And avoid confusion or frustration.

If it's not an enquiry counter, then think about your role and have a sign
board of it. Rather than having a board saying blind person, highlight your
work. It will surely add to your dignity.

These are just my suggestion, you may ignore them if you don't find it
appropriate.

Subject: [AI] how to educate railway [passengers?

Dear list,
As you know that I am working in railway enquiry counter in which i has to
interact with many passengerss. Yesterday as my routine work is contiuned one
of our headwaters officer observed me and told to my section supervisor that i
am not making eye contact with the passenger. After my supervisor told him
that I am a visually challenged person he asked to keep any sign board stating
that this counter is unning by a blind. In my view he is correct many of times
many passengers complaint the same with me when i told the fact they regretted.
hence i request you how should i keep a sign board and what should it should
be written? without hurting our dignity. As public dealing is a difficulttask
in railways.

thanks and regards,

Dear Sushmeetha,

Glad to share that we reached our target of 50 responses, which was the
mandatory requirement  for our research survey.

On behalf of my team, I would like to thank all those who filled up the
questionnaire at such a short notice.

We are also extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to the respondents due
to the accessibility issue. The overlook happened due to the paucity of time.
Henceforth this shall be taken care of.

Thank you once again for all your cooperation and support.

Re: [AI] (AI) Effective techniques of independently having a buffet in social events

2017-01-15 Thread sushmee...@voicevision.in
Dear Friend

Effective techniques of independently having a buffet in social events

Few of the techniques I follow are:
I feel attending conferences, seminars with unknown person is the best aspect
to know and improve my own networking and socialising skills. It gives me more
confidence and also enhances my independence.

While I register for a conference, where I don't know anyone, I make sure to
inform one of the person incharge of registering, about my disability and
requirement of little assistance. I keep a note of the person's name and
contact number.

After reaching the venue, I make sure to meet the person with whom I interacted
while registering.

In the first few minutes of our discussion I inform the concern person that I
will need assistance during the breakfast, lunch time to serve for myself. 99%
the assistance is always made available.

While it's time to serve food, I either ask my escort to take me around along
with her / him and I hold the plate, escort can serve easily and Ican
choose what I wish. If escort does not seem too comfortable, I ask to read the
menu and choose from it.

Few points I learnt over a period one need to know clearly what he / she need.
Clear instructions should be given with politeness and a pleasant smile. Always
connect with the person by asking their name. Call for food only that helps to
fill your stomach and not over eat. Make sure you don't ask the escort to run
around again and again to get various stuff for you.

Lastly acknowledge their support with gratitude.

For me the same thing works in a social gathering too.

I approach the person sitting next to me and gently enquire if he / she is
heading for food and will be comfortable if I walk along with my plate. If that
person does not seem comfortable, I approach someone else. Without feeling
offended or negative about the former.

I hope this of some help to you. If you need any further information, feel free
to call me.

Hi,

In seminars, there's generally a counter to collect coupons, Best strategy is
to ask them to send someone to assist you rather than depending on your
coleagues who might judge you if they are meeting you for the first time.

Subject: [AI] Paper of Interest: Competencies of disabled entrepreneurs in
Iran: implications for learning and development:

Abstract
Abstract

This qualitative research set out to explore competencies of disabled
entrepreneurs by presenting their lived experiences in developing their
capabilities to create and manage their own business. The research also aimed
to identify the dimensions and components of entrepreneurial competencies of
disabled entrepreneurs. The participants were 16 entrepreneurs with physical
and mobility disabilities, four educational managers of disabled vocational
education and rehabilitation centers, and four entrepreneurship academics. Our
findings suggested that the disabled entrepreneurs possess specific personal
and functional entrepreneurial competencies.
Personal competencies include attitudinal competencies, entrepreneurial
self-efficacy and entrepreneurship learning self-efficacy. Functional
competencies encompass entrepreneurial competencies, commitment and social
competencies.

Re: [AI] about medical claim insurance

2016-12-27 Thread sushmee...@voicevision.in
Dear Friends

I know we need to fight to get the terms and condition right for medical claim
policies.

But if anyone is from Mumbai and wish to obtain a mediclaim policy, do let me
know I can connect them with my agent who will readily get you enrolled. Also
if you wish to go for the government subsidised Swavlamban - Health scheme then
he will do the needful. This scheme is only for persons having yearly income
below 3 lakhs and who does not have any medical insurance.

If many people are interested in obtaining the medical policy then I can share
the contacts of our agent on the list for you to contact directly.

This is just an extended support and nothing more from my side.

Please note the details are that "Swavlamban" health insurance scheme for Sum
Insured of Rs. 2 lacs on family floater basis is available for physically
disabled & challenged persons within age group 0-65 for self, spouse & 2
children.( in case PwD is minor i.e. below age of 18 years, then dependent
parents/legal guardians can be covered). Cashless facility is available at
various hospitals across India serviced by TPA.

To enrol, followings documents need to send to nearest local NIA New India
Assurance office:

1) Duly completed & signed proposal form affixing one colour photograph of each
member; (copy of form enclosed herewith);
2) Premium of Rs.357/- in cash or DD in favour of THE NEW INDIA ASSURANCE CO
LTD.
3) Photo ID Card - self attested.
4) Copy of Disability Certificate issued by the authorities - self attested.
5) Copy of cancelled cheque of PwD.

I hope this is of help to someone.

Subject: [AI] Good news from Eyeway!

We have won! Yes, Score Foundation and the Eyeway project has won the
#VodafoneMobile4good16 award at function held last night at the Hotel Taj
Palace organised by @vodafonefoundation in partnership with the
@nasscomfoundation, @nasscom and @ndtv. It is thrilling and I would like to
thank God, our funders and all our current partners Enable-India, NAB Delhi,
Saksham Trust, Mitra Jyothi and Navchetna Institute. This year we plan to add
at least 6 more partners in different parts of India and by 2018, we hope to be
a network of 24 partners. Eyeway is a knowledge resource on living a life with
blindness. Blind people can call the Eyeway Helpdesk 1800 300 20469 from
anywhere in the country Monday through Friday during working hours and speak to
our counsellors. We have counsellors at all our partners centers and the calls
are routed to the centre closest to callers. Our aim is to provide local
solutions in the language of the caller. We would like to thank Vodafone and
all our supporters to recognise our idea . We believe that blindness is not the
real problem, it is the way we think. Also, every blind person is potentially
is part of the Human Resource of the country. We must invest in them rather
than merely providing for them. Please take this understanding on board and
share it with your networks. Again, delighted to have been considered worthy of
the award.

Dear all,

I would like to have your views with regard to medium of accessible material
that can be distributed amongst visually challenged investors when SEBI
conducts awareness programmes for them.

Please try to reply to the following queries:

1. Whether material available on SEBI Investor Awareness website in PDF format
would be sufficient?
2. Whether MP3 format would be preferrable?
3. Whether separate CDs should be created?
4. Whether there would be takers for material in braile ?

Your valuable feedback is highly appreciated. You could also write to me
directly on

vishakha.m...@gmail.com

regards,

Vishakha More.

Re: [AI] Query regarding buying LIC policy.

2016-06-22 Thread sushmee...@voicevision.in
Hi,

You don't need to pay any extra premium, that is called off since 2005 or so.
You can search for the respective document on eyeway website.

Hope this helps.

Hello Friends,

I am looking to buy LIC policy.

I am told that extra premium is charged for visually impaired persons.

I want to know if there is any circular regarding non charging of such extra
premium?

Also, what are the other factors should I keep in mind as a visually impaired
person while buying LIC policy?

Please provide your valuable guidance.

Thanks and Regards.

Good morning all,

Hope you are doing well and enjoying the week. Are there any computer centres

hearing impaired would like to do the MSCIT course. Please revert on the same.
Have a super day.

Cheers!

Srikanth Bolla (pictured below) is standing tall living by his conviction that
if the "world looks at me and says, 'Srikanth, you can do nothing,' I look back
at the world and say 'I can do anything'."
Srikanth Bolla
When he was born, neighbours in the village suggested that his parents smother
him.
It was better than the pain they would have to go through their lifetime, some
said.
He is a "useless" baby without eyes… being born blind is a sin, others added.
Twenty-three years later, Srikanth Bolla is standing tall living by his
conviction that if the "world looks at me and says, 'Srikanth, you can do
nothing,' I look back at the world and say 'I can do anything'."
Srikanth is the CEO of Hyderabad-based Bollant Industries, an organisation that
employs uneducated disabled employees to manufacture eco-friendly, disposable
consumer packaging solutions, which is worth Rs 50 crores.
He considers himself the luckiest man alive, not because he is now a
millionaire, but because his uneducated parents, who earned Rs 20,000 a year,
did not heed any of the 'advice' they received and raised him with love and
affection.
"They are the richest people I know," says Srikanth.
Underdog success story
What is it about stories like Srikanth's that so inspire and fill one with hope?
Could it be the multiple zeroes after a dollar sign or the belief that you and
I can achieve similar success if we set our minds and hearts to it?
Underdog success stories touch a raw nerve. After all, everyone faces
adversity, they dream, and they work hard.
It is another matter that only a few cross the threshold of limits set by
society.
In Srikanth's case, it is his sheer tenacity that shines through the dark
clouds of his misfortune.
Being born blind was just one part of the story. He was also born poor. And you
know what that means in a society like ours.
In school, he was pushed to the back bench and not allowed to play.
The little village school had no way of knowing what inclusion meant.
When he wanted to take up science after his class X, he was denied the option
because of his disability.
All of 18, Srikanth not only fought the system but went on to become the first
international blind student to be admitted to the prestigious Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US.
As author Paulo Coelho says, "We warriors of light must be prepared to have
patience in difficult times and to know the Universe is conspiring in our
favour, even though we may not understand how."
Today, Srikanth has four production plants, one each in Hubli
(Karnataka) and Nizamabad (Telangana), and two in Hyderabad (Telangana).
Another plant, which will be one hundred percent solar operated, is coming up
in Sri City, an integrated business city in Andhra Pradesh, 55 kms from Chennai.
Angel investor Ravi Mantha, who met Srikanth about two years ago, was so
impressed with his business acumen and vision for his company that he not only
decided to mentor him but also invested in Srikanth's company.
"It was a small, tin-roof shack in an industrial area near Hyderabad.
There were eight employees and three machines under the shed. I expected him to
talk about how he wanted to make a social impact, but was surprised by the
business clarity and technical knowhow in someone so young," Ravi says.
They are raising $2-million (around Rs 13 crores) in funding and have already
raised Rs 9 crores.
According to Ravi, his personal goal is to "take the company to IPO."
A vision to build a sustainable company with a workforce comprising 70 percent
people with disability is no mean task.
"Srikanth's vision is inbuilt in the company. It is not just a lip service to
CSR," adds Ravi.
Isolation a big curse
"The isolation of differently-abled people starts at birth," Srikanth said in
his first public speech on the INKTalks stage in Mumbai last month. According
to him, "Compassion is a w

NEW DELHI: An online beneficiaries registration system, 'On-line On-Site', was
launched today to ensure transparency in schemes implemented by the ministry to
provide assistive aids Persons with Disabilities.

Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot, who
inaugurated a mega camp for free of cost distribution of Assistive Aids and
Appliances to the Persons with Disabilities under the ADIP scheme at Gwalior in
Madhya Pradesh, said that this registration system will help in saving time.

Replacement of the old manual registration process with the 'On-line On-Site'
registration system will bring absolute transparency in implementation of ADIP
and ADIP-SSA schemes of Government of India for providing assistive aids and
appliances to Persons with Disabilities and children with special needs across
the nation, a statement quoting Gehlot said.

The 'On-line On-Site' beneficiaries registration system is an initiative taken
up by ALIMCO, as part of the Digital India campaign.

The details of online registered beneficiaries with their photograph will be
uploaded immediately in the official website of ALIMCO during the assessment
itself and will be accessible to one and all, it said.

Moreover, beneficiaries will also be updated about the information on
distribution camp through mobile SMS service, it said.

Gehlot also announced that his ministry assures to set up a hostel of
500 seats for SC, ST and differently-abled in Gwalior district if the demand is
initiated by the concerned department of the state or district administration.

Motorised Tricycle with Utility Box, which can be used by beneficiaries with
over 80 per cent of disability for selling items like milk packets, newspapers
or other similar items, was also launched on the occasion.

Union Mines Minister Narendra Singh Tomar also spoke on the occasion.

A total of differently-abled 2924 persons, pre-identified during the assessment
camps conducted at different locations in June, were provided various types of
aids and assistive devices manufactured and distributed by ALIMCO, functioning
under the ministry, worth of over Rs 2 crore under the ADIP scheme in the camp.

[AI] “What if a blind person tapping his way down the street prods a ferocious dog with his white cane?” in TOI:

2015-08-10 Thread sushmee...@voicevision.in

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/This-IIT-Delhi-professor-has-blind-peoples-problems-in-his-gunsight/articleshow/48384623.cms

NEW DELHI: What if a blind person tapping his way down the street prods a
ferocious dog with his white cane?

The scenario came up in a conversation between Dipendra Manocha, then director
of IT and services with National Association for the Blind, and M Balakrishnan,
professor of computer science at IIT Delhi and an expert in assistive
technologies, back in 2005. It opened Balakrishnan's eyes to the dangers the
visually-challenged face and he has been trying to create smarter technologies
for them ever since.

Two of Balakrishnan's innovations — SmartCane and OnBoard — are hits already
and his research group, AssisTech, has recently created books that let blind
students feel figures and diagrams. For his efforts to improve the lives of
visually chal lenged people, the professor has received Accessibility Award
2015 in Category B for serving persons with disabilities.

Balakrishnan's first efforts were directed at addressing the problem of
mobility, for which he started developing affordable devices that could detect
obstacles without contact. Mobility is a vital aspect of access to education
and work, he says.

While developing OnBoard, for instance, he tried to make buses easily and
safely usable by the visually impaired. The handheld radio frequency-based
system announces bus route numbers and guides users to the bus door. The user
presses one button to hear the route number, and another to select it. The
'select' button activates a speaker fitted near the bus door that helps the
user board by following a voice.

Balakrishnan's team tested On Board on IIT buses with schoolchildren from
National Association for Blind and women from Centre for Blind Women before a
trial run in Mumbai that involved 25 BEST buses. About 90% of the users were
able to board the first bus on the route, he says. The team is arranging funds
to extend the trial to 1,000 more buses.

Equally innovative are the three tactile books AssisTech has produced for blind
students. Until now, no Braille textbook in India had diagrams or figures.
Blind students learned Pythagoras' theorem without ever feeling a
triangle. While there are Braille presses to print text, there are no printing
processes to make diagrams and figures. Learning happens by rote, says
Balakrishnan.

The Centre of Excellence in Tactile Graphics, set up as a part of AssisTech,
has printed three books, one on physiology and anatomy , another on yoga, and a
collection of Indian maps showing political boundaries and terrain for
NCERT.The books are being tried out in some schools and if they are found
useful, AssisTech will print more.

In countries like Japan, the visually impaired are trained in physiotherapy
because their tactile sensation is brilliant. The country taps into this
potential, we don't, Balakrishnan says.

His most popular creation to date is SmartCane, a device that can be fitted to
white canes to detect obstacles in a three-metre range. Released in 2013, it
has about 5,000 visually-impaired users. All that Balakrishnan wants now is
support from industry to scale up production to make life easier for the blind.

Hi,
George Sir,
I haven't any experience whatsoever with e-mail clients on Windows. I have
always used the webmail interface of GMail and never bothered with e-mail
clients.
I apologize, I may not be able to help you here.
Thanks.

 Hi,
 Rajesh Sir,
From your e-mail address, you seem to be using GMail as your e-mail
service provider, indicating that I may be able to help.
Are you using any e-mail client like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla
 Thunderbird?
Are you using the webmail interface of GMail on which web browser?
Are you using Basic HTML or Standard View?
Personally, I use the webmail interface on Mozilla Firefox with Basic
 HTML as my default view.
If you have a similar e-mailing environment, I may be able to help on
provision of further exact problem reproduction steps.
 Thanks.
