[AI] Mobility training in Nagpur

2023-11-13 Thread turab chimthanawala
Hi all,
I request for recommendations of a mobility trainer in Nagpur, preferably a
female trainer. Also, the trainer should be in a position to visit the blind
person at her place for training.
Thanking you
Regards
Turab

[AI] mobility issues

2019-05-12 Thread pratik shah
Hi everyone,
Recently I have bought smart cane and started practising to use it to
move independently. I am unable to walk on a straight line on road.
How to solve this problem? I am new learner.
I also want to know is there any useful mobile application to guide
blind on road in India?

Hello,
I use my e5. It's simple if you have added the desired location in
favourites then, just sit in the transport select drive to that
particular place and it starts giving turn by turn guidance. My phone
has saved me alot specially during evenings and late nights.

Dear List Member,
I would like to answer your questions as I am also a resident of

If the person who is guiding you about the bus numbers at a bus stop
goes away then you can ask in general about the bus number when you
feel that a bus is approaching, in most cases someone from the crowd
will give a response. once you approach someone at the stop to inform
you about the bus numbers also add that he/she should inform someone
else before he/she leaves. in case you are alone at the stop and the
bus is approaching then move a little ahead when the bus approaches
the stop and ask in a loud voice the bus number. if no one responds
ask again. most bus drivers will stop at the bus stop if you are
standing at the stop with your cane open.
I agree that it is difficult to take a cab on lonely roads. if a cabby
does not wish to take you just because you are blind then try and
explain to him that you have been travelling alone since a long time
and that he does not have to do anything extra except to drop you at
the right destination. in case he does not know the place properly
then tell him that one can ask on the way just as sighted people do
when they are new to a place.
hope this is of help to you.
Ashmira

Hai Friend, In mobility issue New Delhi is very friendly for Visually
Impaired persons but not Old Delhi and surrounding areas of Delhi.
Public Transport like City buses and metro are Blind friendly and
people are also very helpful for Blind persons in Delhi. I am
originally from Karnataka but there my experience in Bangaluru and
other places of karnataka is very bad in helping for Blinds forthe
past 13 years I am in Delhi and very satisfied in Delhi. Vivek,

[AI] Mobility issues in Delhi

2012-03-20 Thread moiz tundawala
Hi
Are there people on the list who are efficient with mobility in Delhi?
I intend to work there later in the year and will be on my own mostly.
I use the white cane but will need some assistance to figure my way
initially. How accessible is public transport? What about metro?
Will be glad if you can get me in touch with people who are mobile and
have some experience in living alone.
Regards,
Moiz.

i don't know what are the tips and tricks to manage without escort, but, i
managed my entire studying life without escort. even i performed long
journies without escort. and it is my interest to travel long distance by
train. presently, i also don't require escort to manage my daily living. i
only require escort or sighted help to read any document and for orientation
of a new location, but, it is a temporary requirement.

So, does it mean we should equate blindness with other factors operating
in general impacting on our safety while moving around like statistical
probability of accident due to negligence of fellows and so on, and all
other factors bearing on the mortality?

blindness per se has no major impact on our safety?
If it is so, I beg to differ.
It may be a great and comforting delusion at best.
Perhaps necessary also for living with blindness.
But, for mobility at least, a judicious combination of escort, fixed and
temporary, voluntary and hired, and independent moving with white cane,
navigational devices and other techniques is required.

Whether you are sighted or blind, the moment you step out of the
comfort zone of your home, you increase the chance of facing accidents
and it certainly does not stop people from moving around. It goes for
everything like, no plane travel without the risk of accidents etc.
Henceforth it shouldn't be used as a reason to restrict someone's
mobility. We happily go to bed and who knows whether we'll wake-up
tomorrow or not and it doesn't or shouldn't stop us from sleeping.

2011-09-28 Thread Binni Kumari
Well said, Murugan. I also possess the similar opinion as you do. Risks are
prevalent in all walks of life and they are meant for everyone including both
blind and sighted persons. So blindness should not be an excuse for not moving
around. The best thing one can do is that he/she can take appropriate measures
depending upon the conveniences and availability of resources including either
assistance of a sighted person or using white cane, etc. I would prefer using
my white cane, as far as possible. I would like to take assistance of a sighted
person, only in the situations like for crossing the road and moving in the
newer places. This will help me in realising the fact that I am not excessively
dependent on others.

With best,

Whether you are sighted or blind, the moment you step out of the
comfort zone of your home, you increase the chance of facing accidents
and it certainly does not stop people from moving around. It goes for
everything like, no plane travel without the risk of accidents etc.
Henceforth it shouldn't be used as a reason to restrict someone's
mobility. We happily go to bed and who knows whether we'll wake-up
tomorrow or not and it doesn't or shouldn't stop us from sleeping.

Re: [AI] mobility tips

2011-09-28 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
So, does it mean we should equate blindness with other factors operating in
general impacting on our safety while moving around like statistical
probability of accident due to negligence of fellows and so on, and all other
factors bearing on the mortality?
blindness per se has no major impact on our safety?
If it is so, I beg to differ.
It may be a great and comforting delusion at best.
Perhaps necessary also for living with blindness.
But, for mobility at least, a judicious combination of escort, fixed and
temporary, voluntary and hired, and independent moving with white cane,
navigational devices and other techniques is required.

HiAll,

Amazed with the overwhelming response on the thread I started Tips to manage
without Escort! Thank you everyone. My initial plan is tocollate inputs and
post an article on my blog. However, now this seem to be impossible due to
my limitedskills andthe thread is went toolong and actually since some
people changed the subject, it has gone into multiple threads.

Can one of you please collate all the relevant inputs and send me an
article? I know your question, how would you benefit by writing an article
to me? The person who submit the article will get a gift voucher for dinner
at Dialogue in the dark, Hyderabad. In case, the person is not from
Hyderabad and has no plans to visit Hyderabad in next three months, an
alternative gift voucher would be thought of.

Thanks all!

Hi friends I want to make you aware in special circumstances even when
u have sighted person with you! Some time what happens the person
assisting you become busy staring something else' say for e.g the
shops, sighnboard etc that he remains fail to make you hit by any
other object, therefore its better idea to have cane with you. Friends
I am happy to breathe in this beautiful world today because yesterday
I could escape my demise! a road exedent occurred to me when I was
crossing the road with one of my sighted friend, when infront of vishv
vidhyalia metro station we were crossing the road all of the sudden a
bike with speed of neer about 40km/s hit us badly and we were thrown
parallel to the direction of the bike. Fortunately no vehicle was
coming behind the bike otherwise we would have been over run by
another vehicle. I remained senseless for a minute, then I realised
that my body is all right except few injuries. I am taking treatment.
So specially please take care while crossing the road, because
sometime drivers of rushing vehicle don't know that the person is
blind.

[AI] mobility

2011-09-22 Thread Jean Parker
Friends:

A few clarifications about sighted guide technique. It's purpose is to enable
a blind person to walk beside a sighted person and get information such as
steps, turns, or when a space is narrow and the blind person must go behind the
sighted person. The blind person holds the arm of the sighted person just
above the elbow. This position puts the sighted person a half step ahead of
the blind person thus their body movements can be discerned by the blind person
and important signals conveyed without all the tedious and distracting chatter
about how many steps there are or a curb is being approached. The two people
can engage in conversation just like any two people walking along together. If
the sighted person holds the arm of the blind person, the blind person is
actually ahead of the sighted person. You are pushed along like an object that
must be moved somewhere instead of companionably walking with a colleague or
guide. No information is conveyed and the sighted person has physical control
over where you go. If you decide you don't like this person or they intend
some harm it can be difficult to disengage with them whereas if you are holding
their arm you just let go. At no time is it appropriate to hold someone's hand
if the objective is to be guided easily and safely. Holding someone's hand
does not communicate the same information to the blind person and, depending on
where you are in the world, can have unintended social consequences.
I repeat here the importance of continuing to use your cane while walking with
someone using the sighted guide technique. Walking with a sighted person is
not a substitute for using your cane. This gives you autonomy and the ability
to learn the route of where you are going for the next time you need to go
there.
A word about escorts at conferences. In North America, escorts are not
provided for blind people at conferences or events. If you wanted to bring an
escort you would be responsible for that person's expenses and full admission
charges. The reasons for this are complicated and have to do partly with
cultural factors and with views about independence. Some blind people
experience conferences for the disabled less accessible than those involving
the general population because things have moved so far in the direction of
self-sufficiency that they don't allow for diversity in belief. I don't know
if this is changing or not as it has been many years since I attended any
meetings there.
So you see, things are not necessarily easier in western countries either.

Re: [AI] Mobility

2011-09-22 Thread Amar Jain

Appreciate Harish sir and all others for in-depth tips.
Sometimes, things go totally against you. The day when I was travelling, the
internal announcement system didn't work. Train was heavily crouded because
of Anna's antimovement as slowly media was spreading the news that things
are getting worst. I must say, sometimes media is certainly bad when it
comes to spreading the news to its top.
Suddenly, heavy rains also started. From here, mom is shouting and saying
"tu jiddi hai", and dad was also responding in bad mood due to tention of
Anna. I went mad dealing that half hour when I was wrongly told that I am at
Dahisar, whereas I reached Andheri!

One thing very correct, never sleep!
I never knew about loadstone working independently, but this sounds a nice
option. Even cell tower name is a creative idea. Next time when I go, I will
most certainly try all the suggestions, and will ask further tips on it when
need arises.

If you travel in a root regularly, then you can take note of certain
landmarks. For example, trains movements change when they are about to
approach a station or Junction. If it is a large city, then you can
begin to feel the movement of city in terms of people, trafic,
sometimes music, or if you have a bit of vision, then lights in the
night etc. If it is a big junction, then there is usually a bridge
before the train enters the station and you can take note of that as
well. Last but not the least, take a look at the online railway time
table before you travel on a root so that you will be familiar with
the order in which those stations will arrive. If you are traveling on
a metro train or a local city train, then take note of the distance
between two different stations. Again trains movements in terms of
bridge etc could be helpful. Last but not the least, never sleep if
the journey is shorter than an hour and never, never use headphones if
you are traveling on a root for the first time.

I have a question for everyone.
My question is, which mobility option do you usually opt for when you

Do you use a white cane, or do you take the help of a sighted guide?
According to you, which of these options is more suitable?
Please do let me know your views on this matter.
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Though I always preferred to go with sighted assistant, for that I

You must have ability and confidence to go anywhere alone.

on any sighted escort or companion in our life, however, there doesn’t
seems to be any substitute of White Cane for Visually Impaired as a
whole.
As far as Restaurants and shopping malls are concerned, it is sensible
to take the assistance from sighted folks in such busy places but we
have no choice other than using White Cane if we want to enjoy the
freedom.
I easily access and go to many eating places or even restaurants here
in Delhi with my other Visually Impaired friends. You may find some
difficulties in shops and restaurants on very 1st visit but once you
are familiar with the places and they people are also proverbial to
you, there shouldn’t be any problem I believe.

Amit Bhatt

If you have a KNFB reader with you then there is no need of sited assistance.
I think that KNFB reader will read the products which are written in
printed form.

Re: [AI] Mobility

2011-09-18 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Well said.
Sighted assistance, if available, should of course be used, with discretion,
for most mobility tasks, if not all, except of course if you are going to a
tryst with your beloved.
I however learn with dismay that a few NGOs for some conferences/seminars are
operating under a default presumption of independent mobility in present Indian
context!

Well, of course for mobility white cain is suitable provided that you know
the manner in which it is to be handled, as then it would cause no trouble
to others.
But then at the end of the day you surely need a sighted person's assistance
in order to know what are the products, where are they, and in case of
hotel, where the waiter is, so that you can call and ask for rates and all.
So, a combination of both.

waiter (or anyone at the service) due to the fear whether the
direction we are facing towards is correct, whether the voice pitch is
suited to the distance etc., but sometimes going against our nature
becomes necessary to bring enjoyment. Self-consciousness is the
biggest hurdle in mobility. Killing it increases confidence a
hundredfold.

Of course, one must know how to use cane appropriately and refrain
from taking undue risks. I reiterate that the blind who depend on cane
are exposed to risks and injuries.

[AI] Mobility Device for the Blind

Dear Friends,
Here is a mobility device for the Blind.

'Sighted' wheelchair taken for first successful test drive
By Paul Ridden
May 17, 2011

Researchers have developed and publicly tested a laser-guided feedback system
which will help wheelchair-bound blind users to detect and avoid obstacles
Image Gallery (2 images)

The introduction of the white cane early in the last century gave blind and
visually-impaired users a mobility tool that not only helped them to get
around, but also allowed them to be seen by others. Now researchers from
Sweden's Luleå University of Technology – the same place that designed the
autonomous wheelchair – have developed and publicly tested a system which could
potentially give wheelchair-bound blind people a virtual white stick to help
them detect and avoid obstacles. An electric wheelchair has been fitted with a
navigational laser scanner which provides virtual 3D maps of the surroundings,
and sends feedback about any obstructions to the user via a haptic interface.
Using the time of flight technique, a pioneering navigational laser scanner
developed by professor Kalevi Hyyppä of the University's EISLAB sweeps the area
around the wheelchair to produce a virtual 3D map of the surroundings. This
information is sent to a haptic interface, which allows the user to "see or
feel" obstacles such as open doors, or pedestrians, and use the joystick to
navigate past them without so much as a bump.
The first public test run was undertaken by the project's prospective PhD
student Daniel Innala Ahlmark (who is himself visually-impaired), along one of
the busy corridors of the University's Computer Science, Electrical and Space
Engineering Department. He remarked afterward that he felt safe when using the
system, and that it was just "like using a white cane."
The team – which also includes assistant professor Håkan Fredriksson and PhD
student Fredrik Broström – admits that there are a few limitations to overcome
before such a mobility tool could go into commercial production. The current
laser scanning system, for instance, cannot register anything above and below
the beam, so plans are underway to develop a 3D camera that will be able to
produce multi-level virtual maps.
It is estimated that a more sensitive, production-ready system could be
available within the next five years.

You might also need to seek help from SSL. All the English teachers at
Stephens are quite helpful and considerate. Arjun Mahey, the teacher in
charge, Dept of English, is specially nice if you deliver your due. Feel
free to contact me if you need some specific help.
Congrats again

2006-07-04 Thread George Abraham
Congrats Suman. Good to hear of your admition to Stephen's. You certainly
would be able to move about independantly within the campus. You will need
to give yourself time to become familiar with the environment. The teachers
and students at Stephen's are usually very helpful. You can use their help
to orient yourself.

Which Residence block would you be staying in ? Normally in first year you
would sharing accomodation with one your classmates. Your room mate would
be your first help.

Just relax and allow yourself to settle in. The college has a VI friendly
computer centre where you can scan and generate your reading material.
Enjoy yourself and make the most of your opportunity.

Best,

George

Hello friends,
I have recently got admitions to ST Stephens college. In there BA english

Now, since childhood, I have always had assistance in moving around and
interacting with the environment. I however would like to gain a little more

How does one interact and get to know a place? Can I be indipendent inside
