difficult part. As Harish Ji has already pointed out, the steps are

Another issue is with Jaws scripts, life is made so much easier with

Another thing might be specific to my style of use. I like the Jaws
function of Jaws key + Enter moving the web page by a few frames,
particularly useful when reading newspapers and such stuff. Has to
keep arrowing down in NVDA and that is something I really don't like.
This is a wonderful initiative and I hope NVDA continues to evolve

Subject: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE

Dear Access-Indians

I would like to share a very exciting development in the area of Screen
Reading software. As you all know that NVDA is an open source screen reading
software that can be downloaded free of cost from nvaccess.org web site. Its
latest version is 2013-2 released just few days ago. There are some good
developments related to NVDA here in India.

First; A development team is now working right here in India contributing
new features and improving the screen reading software. The team is lead by
one of our brightest software developer who himself is a screen reading
software user. He is Mr. Manish Agrawal. Manish works full time with Sapient
Technologies at very senior knowledge resource and he now gives 40% of his
time specifically to the NVDA project. He is supported by one more dedicated
developer and also very experienced screen reading software tester.

IIT Delhi is also putting a team together to work under Manish to contribute
in development of NVDA.

All these efforts are under a joint project being implemented by CIS and
Saksham and supported by enable-India. Thanks to Hans Foundation to provide
financial support to run this project.

Specific objective of getting a team here in India is to work on priorities
set by users in India. The team started its work by concentrating on
improving performance of NVDA in Microsoft office applications. Some of the
remarkable improvements that Indian team contributed to NVDA include:

Added sentence reading command
Improved paragraph reading command performance specially with bullets and
auto numbering Reading of protected documents in MS word Announcement of
suggestions in microsoft outlook in to or cc fields Improvements of speech
output in spell check dialogue box Reading of status bar im all office 2010
applications Etc...
This list is growing fast and we can all appreciate that how important these
features are for us.

More important is that we now have developers who are very willing to listen
to us and work on what we think are most important features for us in our
jobs or educational environments. For example, One major reason due to which
I myself was not able to switch to NVDA was that it did not announce auto
complete suggestions of mail IDs in Microsoft outlook. Global team had this
a very low priority because they always suggested to use thunderbird instead
of MS Outlook. I could not make that shift due to my company policy and
responsibilities. Indian development team fixed this issue and for past few
months I am working very happily full time with NVDA as my full time screen
reading software. What this team now wants is that the priorities of bug
fixes or new feature requests should be set by the users themselves. So,
here comes the opportunity to make a screen reading software work where we
find that it is not working. If you would like to report an problem that you
are facing use of NVDA or you feel NVDA is not providing information that
you need, please report it to: sumandog...@gmail.com

Normally there are three releases of NVDA every year. How-ever, if you would
like to try out builds of version that NVDA development team in India is
releasing, write to Suman with this intension on the e-mail provided above.
These releases are issued after every bug fix. These are not ensured for
stability and thus only those who would like to test out the new features
and provide feedback should get into this mode of using NVDA.

Last but not the least, We are getting very close of provide licenses of
Eloquence to work with NVDA along with the license of Sangita and Vocaliser
voices. Saksham will be providing these licenses in a few weeks to come
after testing stability of whole new licensing system.

I will also be writing soon about what is being done to add all Indian
languages in E-speak TTS. So, keep watch in this area as lot of exciting
developments are happening here.

Wishing everyone all the best and a happy teacher's day.

Dipendra Manocha

Glad to know that this excellent work is being done in India.

I have a rather useful feature request.

When reading through the message list in Outlook using the up and down
arrow
keys, NVDA announces all the column headers along with the message
details,

for example, message read, from Manish Agrawal, Subject {AI} Exciting
development in screen reading software, received 18:30, size 22 kb
Column headers like from, subject, received, etc are unnecessary
verbiage especially for someone who spends 3-4 hours a day working with
Outlook.

It would be good to have a feature where these column header announcements
can be turned off for Outlook. It would just be enough for NVDA to
announce

Manish Agrawal, {AI} Exciting developments in screen reading software,
18:30 22kb This would make reading through the Outlook message list
much faster and less repetitive.

If there is already a way to do this in NVDA, I would be happy to be told
how.

Just my two cents worth.

Regards,
Kiran

Hello,
snipI have nothing against the tutor, but the fact remains that we need
a

better tutorial. Dependar sir is requestted to develop one such
tutorial./snip It is interesting to hear all the different user
perspectives. I'll put across mine - and honestly I am not trying to
inflame this healthy discussion.

One thing that has not come up in this discussion and is not very obvious
to
us as users is that this is open source software. It not only means it
is
free, it also means that we as users can contribute to it as much as we
can.

For example, a tutorial is not something that a software developer only
needs to create. Every single person on this list can contribute to
creating

learning resources about NVDA - you try things, read up on the net, ask a
friend etc. and find out a few things about NVDA that you didn't know till
yesterday, feel free to go out and distribute that information to others.
Create your own tutorials, blog posts, podcasts etc. Those will not be
perfect but they will be better than not having anything for the next
person

and you would have contributed towards making NVDA better.

So, we can just ask for features and bug fixes and tutorials and wish
someone will do it.
Or we can also contribute in whatever little ways we can - e.g. create
tutorials, volunteer to train others, become beta testers and report
problems etc.

Philosophy aside, some tips for users struggling with new/different
concepts

in NVDA:
1. Join the NVDA support mailing list. It is a list similar to access
India

and full of very passionate and experienced NVDA users. You can find a lot
of help on the simple and not so simple problems you run into while
getting

up to speed with NVDA.

2. NVDA is not jaws. It is a different screen reader that is trying a
different set of innovations and mechanisms to bring accessibility to
software. Spend more time learning NVDA.

3. NVDA is not jaws (did I just say that??). Jaws is much older, has a
much
larger team of developers, has much more funding etc. but jaws is also
much
more expensive. NVDA is a simpler product and although it is very
powerful,

it does not have all the features of jaws. However, at this point it is so
powerful that a user like me who deals with a lot of cutting edge newly
developed software applications on a daily basis is able to run only with
NVDA almost the whole day.

4. Developing a screen reader is very hard. So, if you reported a bug,
asked
for a feature etc. and no one seems to hear you for a while, do not
despair.

Every small fix in NVDA takes a lot of time and effort. The developers are
probably still fixing the last request.

Regards,
Manish

Thus it would be better to have open source screen reading software for both

Hello friends,
as we are conducting serious discussion on developing NVDa, i'm going
through an unsolvable dilemma. Developing a screenreader is a really
commendable thing, but what if it is not afordable and not attainable to
most people in a country. I know that the screenreader here is free of
coast, but how about the operating system. How many of us can aford to pay
for windows to install the particular screenreader.
We have already got Orca in linux, the facilities in Orca is available in
regional languages also. It has many problems, but they can be easily
solved, if there is a collective initiative from the part of government,
NGOs and other related circles. I doubt why all such initiatives go to the
corporate circle, and why the open source is completely neglected. I don't
know how many of my friends will be comfortable with this idea, but if we
don't have a collective bargaining for such developments which are for all
alike, the use of technology will be limited to a miniscule minority, as it
is now.
Apple I phones are the most advanced technology available today, Howmany of
us can purchase it?

Insert b command reads the entire window. The command works the

You could also use review keys to read the text in window line by line.

  Dear Access-Indians

I would like to share a very exciting development in the area of
Screen Reading software. As you all know that NVDA is an open source
screen reading software that can be downloaded free of cost from
  nvaccess.org web site.
  Its
latest version is 2013-2 released just few days ago. There are some
good developments related to NVDA here in India.

First; A development team is now working right here in India
contributing new features and improving the screen reading software.
The team is lead by one of our brightest software developer who
himself is a screen reading software user. He is Mr. Manish Agrawal.
Manish works full time with Sapient Technologies at very senior
knowledge resource and he now gives 40% of his time specifically to
the NVDA project. He is supported by one more dedicated developer and
also very experienced screen reading software tester.

IIT Delhi is also putting a team together to work under Manish to
  contribute in development of NVDA.

All these efforts are under a joint project being implemented by CIS
and Saksham and supported by enable-India. Thanks to Hans Foundation
to provide financial support to run this project.

Specific objective of getting a team here in India is to work on
priorities set by users in India. The team started its work by
concentrating on improving performance of NVDA in Microsoft office
applications. Some of the remarkable improvements that Indian team
  contributed to NVDA include:

  Added sentence reading command
Improved paragraph reading command performance specially with bullets
and auto numbering Reading of protected documents in MS word
Announcement of suggestions in microsoft outlook in to or cc fields
Improvements of speech output in spell check dialogue box Reading of
status bar im all office 2010 applications Etc...
This list is growing fast and we can all appreciate that how important
  these features are for us.

More important is that we now have developers who are very willing to
listen to us and work on what we think are most important features for
us in our jobs or educational environments. For example, One major
reason due to which I myself was not able to switch to NVDA was that
it did not announce auto complete suggestions of mail IDs in Microsoft
outlook. Global team had this a very low priority because they always
suggested to use thunderbird instead of MS Outlook. I could not make
that shift due to my company policy and responsibilities. Indian
development team fixed this issue and for past few months I am working
very happily full time with NVDA as my full time screen reading
software. What this team now wants is that the priorities of bug fixes
or new feature requests should be set by the users themselves. So,
here comes the opportunity to make a screen reading software work
where we find that it is not working. If you would like to report an
problem that you are facing use of NVDA or you feel NVDA is not
providing information that you need, please report it to:
  sumandog...@gmail.com

Normally there are three releases of NVDA every year. How-ever, if you
would like to try out builds of version that NVDA development team in
India is releasing, write to Suman with this intension on the e-mail
  provided above.
These releases are issued after every bug fix. These are not ensured
for stability and thus only those who would like to test out the new
features and provide feedback should get into this mode of using NVDA.

Last but not the least, We are getting very close of provide licenses
of Eloquence to work with NVDA along with the license of Sangita and
Vocaliser voices. Saksham will be providing these licenses in a few
weeks to come after testing stability of whole new licensing system.

I will also be writing soon about what is being done to add

Insert b command reads the entire window. The command works the same

You could also use review keys to read the text in window line by line.

difficult part. As Harish Ji has already pointed out, the steps are

Another issue is with Jaws scripts, life is made so much easier with
Jaws with applications like Skype and GoogleTalk. Jaws can kind of

Another thing might be specific to my style of use. I like the Jaws
function of Jaws key + Enter moving the web page by a few frames,
particularly useful when reading newspapers and such stuff. Has to
keep arrowing down in NVDA and that is something I really don't like.
This is a wonderful initiative and I hope NVDA continues to evolve and

as we are conducting serious discussion on developing NVDa, i'm going
through an unsolvable dilemma. Developing a screenreader is a really
commendable thing, but what if it is not afordable and not attainable
to most people in a country. I know that the screenreader here is free
of coast, but how about the operating system. How many of us can aford
to pay for windows to install the particular screenreader.
We have already got Orca in linux, the facilities in Orca is available
in regional languages also. It has many problems, but they can be
easily solved, if there is a collective initiative from the part of
government, NGOs and other related circles. I doubt why all such
initiatives go to the corporate circle, and why the open source is
completely neglected. I don't know how many of my friends will be
comfortable with this idea, but if we don't have a collective
bargaining for such developments which are for all alike, the use of
technology will be limited to a miniscule minority, as it is now.
Apple I phones are the most advanced technology available today,

To have every software as open-source could be a good thing in the
ideal world. But since Windows is still the dominant OS in the
computer world, developing a very effective open-source screen reader
for Windows would make more pragmatic sense in my view. A corporate
led process has its own benefits as well. The accessibility initiative
on the part of Apple has made their high-quality products pretty much
accessible to the visually challenged. Besides, the model has prompted
others mainly Android to adopt. Most of the accessibility features are
more or less on the broad lines set by apple. But as Android is
open-source, the accessibility of their products is more meaningful
for us in a sense, as Android is a great deal more customizable, and
the set of choice much larger for us. So both corporate and
open-source development should go hand in hand. When I first tried
NVDA in 2010, I really didn't find it very exciting, but its evolution
since then has been heartening. Don't think it has reached a level at
least for me where it could become my primary screen reader, but the
way it is continuing to evolve, I am sure it can certainly give Jaws a
run for its money pretty soon. That might in fact prompt Freedom
Scientific to perhaps take a relook at their pricing, as well as the
pace of their development and evolution.

Review cursor is already always active.

You do not need to activate it as you do with jaws.

NVDA+arrow keys moves review cursor in current selected frame or as
 NVDA+NVDA
 calls it: inside the object.

By increasing definition of frame to whole window, SAME COMMANDS DO
EXACTLY WHAT JAWS CURSOR IS DOING.

WHEN YOU REACH ANY OF THE BUTTON WHICH NEED TO BE ACTIVATED, YOU CAN
SIMPLY PRESS NVDA+enter to activate the button under review cursor.

In addition to this NVDA also provides audio feedback of movement of
 actual mouse pointer.

You can also route mouse pointer to review cursor or to the insersion
pointer. Then activate left or right mouse clicks.

With these tips, I would encourage you to go through the user manual
which describes all these featues very well.

There are also audio tutorials available for use of NVDA and link to
these can be found at nvaccess.org web site itself.

Dear list members,

There is a shortcut in Windows itself for accessing system tray Windows Key +
B (B for Bravo). I am normally using the said command and not using the JAWS
command of Insert+F10. I think one can use it with NVDA also as it's a windows
shortcut so should be independent of screen-reader software.
Hope above helps.

improving performance of NVDA in Microsoft office applications. Some of the
remarkable improvements that Indian team contributed to NVDA include:

Added sentence reading command
Improved paragraph reading command performance specially with bullets and

Reading of protected documents in MS word
Announcement of suggestions in microsoft outlook in to or cc fields
Improvements of speech output in spell check dialogue box
Reading of status bar im all office 2010 applications

More important is that we now have developers who are very willing to listen

fixes or new feature requests should be set by the users themselves. So,
here comes the opportunity to make a screen reading software work where we
find that it is not working. If you would like to report an problem that you
are facing use of NVDA or you feel NVDA is not providing information that
you need, please report it to: sumandog...@gmail.com

Normally there are three releases of NVDA every year. How-ever, if you would

releasing, write to Suman with this intension on the e-mail provided above.

Hi Dipendra and all,

A key advantage of NVDA is that it uses a mainstream language namely python
so the developer does not have to learn a proprietary language. Python will
stand you in good stead if you want to go for a programming job.

As of this writing, as far as I know, python programmers are not easily
available in India so you may have a temporary market advantage.

difficult part. As Harish Ji has already pointed out, the steps are

Another issue is with Jaws scripts, life is made so much easier with
Jaws with applications like Skype and GoogleTalk. Jaws can kind of
work with these applications, particularly the former without scripts
but not that well. I find the experience is same with NVDA, if they
could integrate the functionalities provided by Jaws Scripts to NVDA
as well, things could become a lot better.
Another thing might be specific to my style of use. I like the Jaws
function of Jaws key + Enter moving the web page by a few frames,
particularly useful when reading newspapers and such stuff. Has to
keep arrowing down in NVDA and that is something I really don't like.
This is a wonderful initiative and I hope NVDA continues to evolve and
 go from strength to strength.

What I would suggest, is to make a small specific podcast with an

Review cursor is already always active.

You do not need to activate it as you do with jaws.

NVDA+arrow keys moves review cursor in current selected frame or as
 NVDA+NVDA
 calls it: inside the object.

By increasing definition of frame to whole window, SAME COMMANDS DO
EXACTLY WHAT JAWS CURSOR IS DOING.

WHEN YOU REACH ANY OF THE BUTTON WHICH NEED TO BE ACTIVATED, YOU CAN
 SIMPLY PRESS NVDA

Important is the task. We need to be able to read all parts of the screen
and messages and also to be able to use mouse clicks when required.

NVDa already has this functionality. Most of this works with object
navigation. In 2013.2 flat review too has been inhanced to give another
option to do this.

I too had this problem in the beginning to get used to the reading of
messages where NVDA did not announce messaes automatically and there was no
pointer. Pleaces where we need to rely on jaws cursor when using jaws.

With few days of working with keys of object navigation it has come to same
level of ease of use as with jaws cursor.

You can compare this to some extent to frame restriction when in jaws
cursor.

By default NVDA is restricted inside current button or control. You just
need to move it one or two levels up by nvda+shift+up arrow and then review
cursor movement commands would begin navigation in application window.

Thanks
Dipendra

Subject: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE

 Dear Access-Indians

I would like to share a very exciting development in the area of Screen
Reading software. As you all know that NVDA is an open source screen
 reading
software that can be downloaded free of cost from nvaccess.org web site.
 Its
latest version is 2013-2 released just few days ago. There are some good
developments related to NVDA here in India.

First; A development team is now working right here in India contributing
new features and improving the screen reading software. The team is lead

 by
one of our brightest software developer who himself is a screen reading
software user. He is Mr. Manish Agrawal. Manish works full time with
 Sapient
Technologies at very senior knowledge resource and he now gives 40% of
 his
time specifically to the NVDA project. He is supported by one more
 dedicated
developer and also very experienced screen reading software tester.

IIT Delhi is also putting a team together to work under Manish to
 contribute
 in development of NVDA.

All these efforts are under a joint project being implemented by CIS and
Saksham and supported by enable-India. Thanks to Hans Foundation to
 provide
financial support to run this project.

Specific objective of getting a team here in India is to work on
 priorities
set by users in India. The team started its work by concentrating on
improving performance of NVDA in Microsoft office applications. Some of
 the
remarkable improvements that Indian team contributed to NVDA include:

 Added sentence reading command
Improved paragraph reading command performance specially with bullets and
 auto numbering
Reading of protected documents in MS word
Announcement of suggestions in microsoft outlook in to or cc fields
Improvements of speech output in spell check dialogue box
Reading of status bar im all office 2010 applications
 Etc...
This list is growing fast and we can all appreciate that how important
 these
 features are for us.

More important is that we now have developers who are very willing to
 listen
to us and work on what we think are most important features for us in our
jobs or educational environments. For example, One major reason due to
 which
I myself was not able to switch to NVDA was that it did not announce auto
complete suggestions of mail IDs in Microsoft outlook. Global team had
 this
a very low priority because they always suggested to use thunderbird
 instead
of MS Outlook. I could not make that shift due to my company policy and
responsibilities. Indian development team fixed this issue and for past
 few
months I am working very happily full time with NVDA as my full time
 screen

 would
like to try out builds of version that NVDA development team in India is

These releases are issued after every bug fix. These are not ensured for
stability and thus only those who would like to test out the new features
and provide feedback should get into this mode of using NVDA.

Last but not the least, We are getting very close of provide licenses of
Eloquence to work with NVDA along with the license of Sangita and Vocaliser

I will also be writing soon about what is being done to add all Indian

Hi,
Nice discussion is going on here.
I would like to add some more points.
Primarily, my company uses gtalk for chatting.
But NVDA is not user friendly in this regard.
I personally use gtalk for chatting.
To read chat messages I need to press insert B. If I chat continously
in an hour it reads from beggining. and menu items are also wont work.
can any one suggest me in this regard?
Or if it is possible, kindly put this point in to development team.
I hope this will get resolved.

Hope I explained my query clearly.

 Thanks

Hi Dipendra

Although the steps in reality are really simple once you do it yourself, while
reading about it it seems something that is not my cup for most.

What I would suggest, is to make a small specific podcast with an example which
are carried out both in Jaws and NVDA for this specific task.

Once folks get the concept of object navigation right they will automatically
get convinced about the utility of NVDA is a good screen reader.

Actually unlearning is biger challenge than learning.

There are some podcasts for object navigation already available. We may need
to do some specifically for jaws users. Even for that. It would be better if
new NVDA users could point out where they are getting stuck and where they
feel the need to switch back to jaws. That feedback would be very helpful.

Thanks

Hi Dipendra

Although the steps in reality are really simple once you do it yourself,
while reading about it it seems something that is not my cup for most.

What I would suggest, is to make a small specific podcast with an example
which are carried out both in Jaws and NVDA for this specific task.

Once folks get the concept of object navigation right they will
automatically get convinced about the utility of NVDA is a good screen
reader.

Review cursor is already always active.

You do not need to activate it as you do with jaws.

NVDA+arrow keys moves review cursor in current selected frame or as NVDA
calls it: inside the object.

By increasing definition of frame to whole window, SAME COMMANDS DO EXACTLY
WHAT JAWS CURSOR IS DOING.

WHEN YOU REACH ANY OF THE BUTTON WHICH NEED TO BE ACTIVATED, YOU CAN SIMPLY
PRESS NVDA+enter to activate the button under review cursor.

In addition to this NVDA also provides audio feedback of movement of actual
mouse pointer.

You can also route mouse pointer to review cursor or to the insersion
pointer. Then activate left or right mouse clicks.

With these tips, I would encourage you to go through the user manual which
describes all these featues very well.

There are also audio tutorials available for use of NVDA and link to these

have already pointed out, the Jaws cursor like functionality is a
difficult part. As Harish Ji has already pointed out, the steps are
not as complicated as they might sound , but it is difficult to
understand at first, particularly for a Jaws user.

Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE

2013-09-06 Thread Kiran Kaja
Glad to know that this excellent work is being done in India.

I have a rather useful feature request.

When reading through the message list in Outlook using the up and down arrow
keys, NVDA announces all the column headers along with the message details,
for example, message read, from Manish Agrawal, Subject {AI} Exciting
development in screen reading software, received 18:30, size 22 kb
Column headers like from, subject, received, etc are unnecessary
verbiage especially for someone who spends 3-4 hours a day working with
Outlook.

It would be good to have a feature where these column header announcements
can be turned off for Outlook. It would just be enough for NVDA to announce
Manish Agrawal, {AI} Exciting developments in screen reading software,
18:30 22kb This would make reading through the Outlook message list
much faster and less repetitive.

If there is already a way to do this in NVDA, I would be happy to be told
how.

Just my two cents worth.

Regards,
Kiran

Hello,
snipI have nothing against the tutor, but the fact remains that we need a
better tutorial. Dependar sir is requestted to develop one such
tutorial./snip It is interesting to hear all the different user
perspectives. I'll put across mine - and honestly I am not trying to
inflame this healthy discussion.

One thing that has not come up in this discussion and is not very obvious to
us as users is that this is open source software. It not only means it is
free, it also means that we as users can contribute to it as much as we can.

For example, a tutorial is not something that a software developer only
needs to create. Every single person on this list can contribute to creating
learning resources about NVDA - you try things, read up on the net, ask a
friend etc. and find out a few things about NVDA that you didn't know till
yesterday, feel free to go out and distribute that information to others.
Create your own tutorials, blog posts, podcasts etc. Those will not be
perfect but they will be better than not having anything for the next person
and you would have contributed towards making NVDA better.

So, we can just ask for features and bug fixes and tutorials and wish
someone will do it.
Or we can also contribute in whatever little ways we can - e.g. create
tutorials, volunteer to train others, become beta testers and report
problems etc.

Philosophy aside, some tips for users struggling with new/different concepts
in NVDA:
1. Join the NVDA support mailing list. It is a list similar to access India
and full of very passionate and experienced NVDA users. You can find a lot
of help on the simple and not so simple problems you run into while getting
up to speed with NVDA.

2. NVDA is not jaws. It is a different screen reader that is trying a
different set of innovations and mechanisms to bring accessibility to
software. Spend more time learning NVDA.

It is interesting to hear all the different user perspectives. I'll put across
mine - and honestly I am not trying to inflame this healthy discussion.

One thing that has not come up in this discussion and is not very obvious to us
as users is that this is open source software. It not only means it is free,
it also means that we as users can contribute to it as much as we can.

For example, a tutorial is not something that a software developer only needs
to create. Every single person on this list can contribute to creating learning
resources about NVDA - you try things, read up on the net, ask a friend etc.
and find out a few things about NVDA that you didn't know till yesterday, feel
free to go out and distribute that information to others.
Create your own tutorials, blog posts, podcasts etc. Those will not be perfect
but they will be better than not having anything for the next person and you
would have contributed towards making NVDA better.

So, we can just ask for features and bug fixes and tutorials and wish someone
will do it.
Or we can also contribute in whatever little ways we can - e.g. create
tutorials, volunteer to train others, become beta testers and report problems
etc.

Philosophy aside, some tips for users struggling with new/different concepts in
NVDA:
1. Join the NVDA support mailing list. It is a list similar to access India and
full of very passionate and experienced NVDA users. You can find a lot of help
on the simple and not so simple problems you run into while getting up to speed
with NVDA.

2. NVDA is not jaws. It is a different screen reader that is trying a different
set of innovations and mechanisms to bring accessibility to software. Spend
more time learning NVDA.

3. NVDA is not jaws (did I just say that??). Jaws is much older, has a much
larger team of developers, has much more funding etc. but jaws is also much
more expensive. NVDA is a simpler product and although it is very powerful, it
does not have all the features of jaws. However, at this point it is so
powerful that a user like me who deals with a lot of cutting edge newly
developed software applications on a daily basis is able to run only with NVDA

Although the steps in reality are really simple once you do it

What I would suggest, is to make a small specific podcast with an

is only the program which can support number of popular application. And if
I considered regarding the portability of screen reader, I like NVDA much,
cause we can use NVDA along with eloquence voice in any computer without
installing them. Till now we can not expect another cursor like jaws or
invisible cursor in NVDA, but perhaps things will going to be change soon.
cause in order to access another cursor from the keyboard along with speech,
it need its own display driver which NVDA doesn't have right now. Jaws is
using video intersept software, which require to install in computer if
you are using the portable jaws as his display driver. Therefore I believe
that we have to rely on the NVDA cursor which is review cursor or object

that, as jaws how one can create his or her own required addons using python

Over the last year or so, I have been trying to use more and more of
NVDA though Jaws remains my primary screen reader. As so many people
have already pointed out, the Jaws cursor like functionality is a
difficult part. As Harish Ji has already pointed out, the steps are
not as complicated as they might sound , but it is difficult to
understand at first, particularly for a Jaws user.

Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE

2013-09-06 Thread Dipendra Manocha
NVDA does have another feature of add-ons.

There are several add-ons that have been contributed by different developers
round the globe.

In version 2013.2 version of NVDA in the manage add-on dialogue box you do
have a link that takes you to the download page of the NVDA add-ons. There
is a specific add-on dealing with system tray. This is specifically for
persons who have come habitual of jaws script for system tray. This add-on
adds this system tray item listing feature to NVDA.

Else, from desktop, we can tab to systemtray itself. Here by using arrow
keys we can access all items of system tray and activate these.

Regarding linefeed:

In document like MS word:

If we use up or down arrow in a document with blank lines, it does say
blank. If you use left or right arrow, it announces line-feed. Linefeed is
the character that symbolised an enter key press at that location.

This in fact is an additional feature which I find to be very useful and
exactly the required behaviour.

Thanks
Dipendra

Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE

2013-09-06 Thread Dipendra Manocha
Our friend Pranav have actually authored a set of tutorials for using NVDA
with many different applications such as Open office, thunder bird, and all
the applications which are part of Samarth tools. These tutorials are part
of Samarth tools package. I will ask Saksham team to post these tutorials to
be downloadable separately and not just as part of complete Samarth tools.

Samarth tools is a single installer of NVDA and host of applications which
are open source or free and work well with NVDA. This is a free download of
1.2 GB. You could request a DVD of the same from Saksham.

Thanks
Dipendra

Re: [AI] NEW EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN SCREEN READING SOFTWARE

2013-09-06 Thread Dipendra Manocha
Scripting is cool framework to enhance capabilities of jaws. How ever, it is
new language for many and to get jaws configured for speicif requirements,
we could hardly find people who could do jaws scripting.

With NVDA development team development, we are trying to create a pool of
knowledge resource that could help us deal with such situations.

I hope once this project becomes a movement, more python developers would be
able to fix and address special configuration issues at much faster pace.

I am amazed at the number of projects going on in India itself who try to
develop tools for blind for computers. If these teams become contributors to
NVDa project, we may end up having an army to deal with.

This may happen if as users we ask for NVDA when we come to providing
accessibility to computers.

Thanks
Dipendra

Over the last year or so, I have been trying to use more and more of NVDA
though Jaws remains my primary screen reader. As so many people have already
pointed out, the Jaws cursor like functionality is a difficult part. As
Harish Ji has already pointed out, the steps are not as complicated as they
might sound , but it is difficult to understand at first, particularly for a
Jaws user.
Another issue is with Jaws scripts, life is made so much easier with Jaws
with applications like Skype and GoogleTalk. Jaws can kind of work with
these applications, particularly the former without scripts but not that
well. I find the experience is same with NVDA, if they could integrate the
functionalities provided by Jaws Scripts to NVDA as well, things could
become a lot better.
Another thing might be specific to my style of use. I like the Jaws function
of Jaws key + Enter moving the web page by a few frames, particularly useful
when reading newspapers and such stuff. Has to keep arrowing down in NVDA
and that is something I really don't like.
This is a wonderful initiative and I hope NVDA continues to evolve and go
from strength to strength.

On 9/6/13, Ashik ashikhir...@gmail.com wrote:
I was also thinking of the same. A nice tutorial is necessary for us.
I listened to the tutorial available, but I could not get much of it.
I have nothing against the tutor, but the fact remains that we need a
better tutorial. Dependar sir is requestted to develop one such tutorial.

 Hi Dipendra

Although the steps in reality are really simple once you do it
yourself, while reading about it it seems something that is not my cup
for most.

What I would suggest, is to make a small specific podcast with an
 example

which are carried out both in Jaws and NVDA for this specific task.

Once folks get the concept of object navigation right they will
automatically get convinced about the utility of NVDA is a good
 screen reader.

 Thanks
 Dipendra

Dear Access-Indians

I would like to share a very exciting development in the area of Screen
Reading software. As you all know that NVDA is an open source screen
reading
software that can be downloaded free of cost from nvaccess.org web site.
Its

latest version is 2013-2 released just few days ago. There are some good
developments related to NVDA here in India.

First; A development team is now working right here in India contributing
new features and improving the screen reading software. The team is lead
by

one of our brightest software developer who himself is a screen reading
software user. He is Mr. Manish Agrawal. Manish works full time with
Sapient

Technologies at very senior knowledge resource and he now gives 40% of his
time specifically to the NVDA project.

Indian development team fixed this issue and for past
few
months I am working very happily full time with NVDA as my full time
screen

reading software. What this team now wants is that the priorities of bug
fixes or new feature requests should be set by the users themselves. So,
here comes the opportunity to make a screen reading software work where we
find that it is not working. If you would like to report an problem that
you

are facing use of NVDA or you feel NVDA is not providing information that
you need, please report it to: sumandog...@gmail.com

Normally there are three releases of NVDA every year. How-ever, if you
would

like to try out builds of version that NVDA development team in India is
releasing, write to Suman with this intension on the e-mail provided
above.

These releases are issued after every bug fix. These are not ensured for
stability and thus only those who would like to test out the new features
and provide feedback should get into this mode of using NVDA.

Last but not the least, We are getting very close of provide licenses of
Eloquence to work with NVDA along with the license of Sangita and
Vocaliser

Indian development team fixed this issue and for past
few
months I am working very happily full time with NVDA as my full time
screen

reading software. What this team now wants is that the priorities of bug
fixes or new feature requests should be set by the users themselves. So,
here comes the opportunity to make a screen reading software work where
we
find that it is not working.

These are not ensured for
stability and thus only those who would like to test out the new
features

and provide feedback should get into this mode of using NVDA.

Last but not the least, We are getting very close of provide licenses of
Eloquence to work with NVDA along with the license of Sangita and
Vocaliser

voices. Saksham will be providing these licenses in a few weeks to come
after testing stability of whole new licensing system.

I will also be writing soon about what is being done to add all Indian
languages in E-speak TTS. So, keep watch in this area as lot of exciting
developments are happening here.

Wishing everyone all the best and a happy

Improved paragraph reading command performance specially with bullets and
auto numbering
Reading of protected documents in MS word
Announcement of suggestions in microsoft outlook in to or cc fields
