Think the focus seems to be shifting to mobile from PC. I am not sure at all that is the right direction to take. By the way, I just noticed that my previous mail got send multiple times as my chair had jammed the enter key of the keyboard. Sorry for the inconvenience. hello, the same situation is with openbook software. the last version which i have been using was openbook 9 which released around 3 years back and since then there is no update. don't know for what reasons, freedom scientific has not updated openbook after its last version9. I don't think they have discontinued their program for further development. They are very much into it, probably there are not substantial upgradation scheduled for now. They might be working for next version of Kurzweil in 21. I also agree with you that Kurzweil is the best reading machine for visually impaired using the computer system. I am using Kurzweil since my undergraduate programme. However now for the purpose of scanning the books, I have shifted to fine reader as Kurzweil didn't upgrade their recognition engen after fine reader 11. On 11/17/20, Mahesh S. Have they killed off Kurzweil 1000 silently? Can't find anything on the site regarding the discontinuation of the product or any reasoning. As there are lots of OCR and reading tools in general, a lot many people will simply look at alternatives and be fine, also as it is a very expensive software. But particularly for those who are in higher education, both in a learning or teaching roles, it is surely a setback. I wish there is a way to get them to change their minds on this. I would surely want to try out Kibo for desktop. The Android product is promising, though the reading interface on the app do not seem to have many options as such. Have they integrated the Google TTS somehow on the Windows platform? That is the greatest feature in a way on Android, Google TTS provides a very functional voice to Kibo on Android. Vocalizer doesn't have as many language options on Windows, and eSpeak is not the greatest TTS option available in terms of voice quality and listening experience, and Eloquence of course have very limited language set though in my view it does remain the best TTS engine despite all the neglect that it has faced. Hi Pranav, Thank you for the response. Yes, I have been using Kibo, and it surely is promising. I read about Kibo desktop recently, but I have tried it out only on Android so far. I have felt that for major educational requirements, you still need the computer. Don't know about the iPhone environment, but text selection, and even many other basic requirements are rather difficult on Android. By the way, KNFB Reader on Android is an utter scam. It is so sad that Kurzweil Educational Systems have stopped the development of K1000. Mahesh, As far as I know, k1k is no longer being developed. I use the knfb reader for my recognition needs but am keeping a close eye on kebo because it is moving in promising directions with respect to image recognition. If you are using an iPhone, voice dream reader with voice dream scanner may come close to what you need with note taking features etc. Pranav -- Disclaimer: 1. [AI] Regarding Kurzweil 1000
Hi listers, This is is a question regarding Kurzweil 1000. Has Kurzweil Educational Systems discontinued the further development of Kurzweil 1000? I have not been able to find information on Kurzweil 1000 beyond version 14, and the most recent within-version for V 14 came in 2017. Have they discontinued the product? The Kurzweil website is still maintained, and updates and stuff can be downloaded in from there. However, there is not much clue on what happened to K 1000. In my view, the K 1000 is still the best integrated educational software for visually impaired people, bringing together OCR and TTS in a highly customized educational package. Have we heard the last of K 1000? Regards, -- Dr. Mahesh S.
