The central bank of Turkey makes all notes and coins in different sies and
provides a currency identifier free of cost to visually impaired.
The guide is an intelligently designed piece of plastic which makes
identification of both notes and coins very quick and simple.
It has tactile, print and braille markings on it.

The rupee checker i designed also contains feature for coin identification
but this feature became useless once the government came out with coins of
same size.
Thankfully we still are maintaining the difference in sizes of notes and
therefore rupee checker continues to be useful for identifying notes.

Mobile apps or dedicated electronic devices are also welcome but in India
not many will be able to own or maintain them.

Recently, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving in the United States came up
with an app called EyeNote that allows the user to place the note in any
configuration, and reads out the denomination. Apparently, there is another
technology called LookTell money reader. While I realize that these cannot
be the only solutions as they will be restricted to a few people,
technological solutions such as these could supplement other suggested
solutions such as notes with different sizes and shapes of edges.

Marking on notes is very necessary but it is not necessary that the
marking

should be a braille numaric codes. We can have a single dot for rs 10, 2
dots for 20, 3 dots for 50, 4 dots for 100 5 dots for 500 and 6 dots for

Recently, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving in the United States came up
with an app called EyeNote that allows the user to place the note in any
configuration, and reads out the denomination. Apparently, there is another
technology called LookTell money reader. While I realize that these cannot
be the only solutions as they will be restricted to a few people,
technological solutions such as these could supplement other suggested
solutions such as notes with different sizes and shapes of edges.

I got to see the wonderful best practice of Turkey in this context.

If the dots will not last, having dots or Braille is not a good idea. In my

Marking on notes is very necessary but it is not necessary that the marking
should be a braille numaric codes. We can have a single dot for rs 10, 2
dots for 20, 3 dots for 50, 4 dots for 100 5 dots for 500 and 6 dots for
1000. and the vide publicity can be given for these markings through mass

It would be good to investigate what developed countries are doing and also
to check are there any international body having any such guidelines. On
the other hand i think of the following:
- different shaped of corners, round pointed, diagonal
- different size, both length and breadth should differ.
-color shades, we have it in our current notes but it is not consistent.
This is useful for partially sighted, mentally challenged and illiterate.

Lastly, how about including nfc tags?

In addition if the tactile markup are damaged there currency Notre should
not be allowed at all, there banks should be educated on this.

well about braille, Switzerland had in the past
braille marking it notes, but they removed as
 as marks were fading soon.
also for Euro currency notes, it was thought
in the biggening, however due to security risk,
the idea was dropd.
so difrunt sizes and shapes is the best solution.

I think that identification of various sizes is very quicker than
braille dots identification. We should adopt the method of
accessibility which be quick. If we stand in front of any store, we
won't feel more comfortable with braille than various sizes.
I have a other suggestion in this regards. The indian government
should develop a mobile apps for mobile users to identify currency
notes.

Dear All,

Let us appreciate AICB Delhi for taking the much needed initiative on
such an horrible issue and extend our best support during their
campaigns.

Urging the authorities to make a Braille mark on the notes is not at
all a good idea as many of us[specially who lost their sight
recently] do not know the Braille language. By keeping this thing in
mind, I request you all to vote for making the coins/notes in a unique
shape. To underline my thought, asking everyone for learning Braille
is not practical and cannot work out in rural areas and elder people.

Please let's hold our hands together and raise the best solution with
a single voice.

Re: [AI] most urgent

2014-08-19 Thread Avichal Bhatnagar
Yeah, instead of braille, some tactile markings can be made on notes.
These would be accessible to all persons, no matter if he/she is
literate or not.
For coins, the same thing can be followed along with difference in
shape and size.
Also, if it gets implemented, then all previous currency notes and
coins should be slowly withdrawed from the market and replaced by new
ones.

2014-08-19 Thread Zoher Kheriwala
Marking on notes is very necessary but it is not necessary that the marking
should be a braille numaric codes. We can have a single dot for rs 10, 2 dots
for 20, 3 dots for 50, 4 dots for 100 5 dots for 500 and 6 dots for 1000. and
the vide publicity can be given for these markings through mass media.

Hello!
I also think that a remarkable difference in shape and size for both
currency notes and coins will be the best solution for all visually
impaired persons, no matter whether he / she knows braille or not,
whether he / she is partially sighted or not, whether he / she is
literate or illiterate etc.

Shape and size of coins should be distinct for coins of one, two, five and
ten to distinguish them tactually, as was the case in twentieh century.
Similarly size of notes can also be varied a bit more than at present in
length/breath instead of introducing so-called blind marks...

2014-08-18 Thread AICB
Dear Colleagues,

We are happy to inform you that yet again,
one of the initiatives taken by this Confederation for facilitating
accessibility to persons with visual impairment, is receiving active attention
from the concerned authorities. This
initiative launched by us relates to enabling visually impaired persons to
recognize with ease various currency notes and coins. We had moved
the office of the Chief
Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities for getting appropriate affirmative
action in the matter.

As a result, we have now received the good
news that a meeting is being convened by the Ministry of Finance, Department of
Economic Affairs under the Chairmanship of the Joint Secretary (C &
C). The meeting will take place on 21st August, 2014 at 11.00 a.m.
and will deliberate upon the following issues:

  i.Introduce Braille-like
signs/blind marks in currency;
and
ii.Review of the shape and size of coins.

It will be a great help if you would kindly
let us have your suggestions/inputs on the above two issues by email so as to
reach us by 11.00 a.m. on 20th August. While doing so, you should not
forget a large
number of illiterate blind persons living in rural as well as urban areas.
Please send your comments to aicbde...@yahoo.com

Absolutely. Unless people write to their presidents and prime ministers, how
will things change? In fact, we do very little of this kind of lobbying when
compared to the west. We should bombard our politicians, starting from the
local MLA/MP to the president/prime minister with issues that require urgent
solutions. They may delete a message or three; but when millions of them

The Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment is not able to fully
focus on the issue of disability. With issues of SC/ST, Minorities and
the other equally
pressing issues demanding attention, the Minister is unable to find
the time for issues concerning disabled people.

It has been almost 14 years since the Persons with Disability Act was
passed. Yet, it has not been properly implemented. The Act itself is
in dire need
of amendments but this too could not be done. On 1st October 2007,
India became the seventh country in the world to ratify the United

be 2 years since the ratification. This needs urgent attention as well.

We do realize that setting up of a full-fledged Ministry for

URGENT ATTN.: HON’BLE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA

 Dear Sir,

We write to congratulate you on your stupendous success in the
elections. We are thrilled and excited that the UPA government has
come into power for the
second term. We wait in hope and anticipation that the positive
initiatives that were begun in the last tenure will continue and touch
the lives of each
one of the 70 million disabled people in India.

The demand for a separate ministry for disability has picked up
momentum across the country. This urgent need cannot be emphasized
enough. We write to press
this demand before you once again.

The Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment is not able to fully
focus on the issue of disability. With issues of SC/ST, Minorities and
the other equally
pressing issues demanding attention, the Minister is unable to find
the time for issues concerning disabled people.

It has been almost 14 years since the Persons with Disability Act was

option at the moment
would be to implement the mandate already set out in the XIth Five
Year Plan: the upgradation of the Disability Division of the Ministry
of Social Justice
and Empowerment, to a Department.

We quote verbatim from the Planning Commission document:

Clause 6.188: The ‘Disability Division’ of the Ministry of Social
Justice and Empowerment shall be strengthened with the status of a
separate ‘Department’,
so that they can effectively liaise with all the concerned
Ministries/Departments and ensure that they fulfill their
responsibility towards disabled persons,
including the financial support enjoined on them.

This gesture would send a strong message not only to India, but to the
whole world, about your Government’s commitment to the cause of
disability. We urge
you to consider this demand favourably.

With best wishes and prayers to you and your team, for your second
term in office.

With deep and personal regards,

Yours sincerely,

Firstly, deep congratulations to mr. javed abidi and his organization
for this great step.
Certainly, it's a worthy taking initiative, and since I've just
checked my inbox, I'd like to urgently send in a letter to honorable
prime minister.
What I need to ask, is where to send this letter?
It may definitely sound a bit pathetic as the correct address can be
found by a bit of googling, but since I'm accessing this mail via
mobile as of now, I won't be able to google at this junction.
Hope you respectables can understand my situation.
Therefore, can someone urgently articulate the address of prime
minister's office so that I can immediately hurl a correspondence.
An urgent response is highly appreciated.

With profound regards,

Dear Access Indians,

I have received a copy of a letter written by Javed Abidi to the
Hon'ble Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. A copy is placed below for
your perusal.

It will be good if you also could send him a similar letter, on your
letterhead, in your own language. The way you would want to.

Emphasise on the need of a separate Ministry for Disability Affairs.
If not, atleast a full-fledged Department under the Ministry of Social
Justice & Empowerment.

This is a SUPER URGENT matter. The next round of Cabinet expansion
will take place, most probably, next week. That's when a lot of
Ministers of State, etc.
will be taken in.

I request you to please send your letter on Monday itself. And do fax
a copy to Javed's office at 011-26265649 or email to Secretariat

URGENT ATTN.: HON'BLE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA

Sadly, even after googling PMO's e mail id, I found only the feedback page with
limit of 500 characters.
That too, mind you, is inaccessible. The captcha there can not be solved even

So, I am thinking of contacting the honorable, by reliable old method of

India became the seventh country in the world to ratify the United

We do realize that setting up of a full-fledged Ministry for

option at the moment
