I think, the same device will be more useful if it comes in the form of a
sunglass. Sometimes it is difficult to maintain a straight direction. We
have to move the cane around. A sunglass will always keep us facing front.
Actually I have an RniB glass with vibration. The same glass may be
developed by the smart cane company.

yes, it is working. but, it only works for those who already have a basic
mobility skills, can walk alone with the help of basic white cane or
folding stick. it is not a replacement of stick, instead it works like an
add on.

[AI] Please read an article about an NGO in Pune.

2013-10-15 Thread Shivaji Londhe
Dear list members,
humbley request you to take time and read this article on an NGO
called Niwant in Pune.
Chak De Niwant!
In the past seventeen years I have travelled on a unique path. It is
very difficult to express in words the intensity of my experiences.
Hundreds of visually challenged students walked into my life and with
the help of ‘Niwant’ they now settled in life. Everyone knows about a
blind school, but ‘Niwant Andh Mukta Vikasalaya’ was established for
students pursuing higher education, i.e. after Standard X. The journey
of the making of Niwant was never a bed of roses. It was a war against
negation, superstition and lack of faith in human abilities.
A small but significant incident changed my whole perspective to life.
In 1996, I visited a blind school in Pune to give a donation on the
eve of my husband Anand’s birthday. There I saw a big line up of small
helpless kids struggling to climb up the stairs and one of the
homesick children hugged me because he thought I was his mother. Tears
rolled down my eyes. I decided to give a slice of my life for the
upliftment of these children and thought against the idea of taking up
the job as an English teacher at the college level. The journey that
followed saw the complete assimilation of ‘Meera Badve’, i.e. myself
in the world of the specially sighted.
The blind students had to discontinue their education after they
completed their schooling. Not a single word was available in Braille
beyond Standard X. Students with a rich family background could get
support from their family members and continue education, but what
about the others? They were children of rickshaw drivers, house
helpers and farm workers. They came from strata of society that was
beyond our definition of poverty and some were orphans. The syllabus
for the blind students was the same as that for the sighted students
and educational facilities were practically non-existent. “Is this
social justice?” Niwant was like creating a universe out of void.
On completion of the age of 18, the Social Welfare Department leaves
differently-abled students to fend for themselves. Generally they are
treated as non-productive elements by their family members who leave
them in the school and sometimes they abandon them permanently. What
could these children do? They were left on the street and used by
society for malpractices; boys and girls for different reasons.
Unfortunately these children had no sense of hygiene, culture and were
struck by an inferiority complex as they thought that they could not
cope with the challenges of the sighted world. They believed in
charity and had not experienced the joy of earning money through self
respect. They had no knowledge of the English language. Educational
institutes had no faith in their potential. Eye-brows were raised and
critical questions had to be answered.
I had to sort out all these problems one by one. The students who
walked into my life were directionless and confused about their
future. They wanted to lead abetter life but did not know how to
achieve their goals in life. In short, they needed a mother – teacher.
I painstakingly had to give them lessons in culture, hygiene, which
also included toilet training, cleanliness, feed them and academics
followed later. Subject-based dictionaries with meanings in Marathi
had to be created to encourage them to opt for English medium.
Technology had to be brought in by replacing magnetic tapes by MP3
players, number of simple and less expensive educational tools had to
be devised. Tonnes and tonnes ofcounseling went into helping them feel
very positive about themselves and the world around them. Occasionally
I had to use strict measures to discipline them. The social system had
to be influenced to overlook superstitious beliefs that these children
are the outcome of sins committed in a previous life. Educational
institutes had to be convinced about giving them access to education
and have faith in their abilities. Education is indeed the birth right
of every child and as a society we have no right to give them begging
bowls instead of Braille books. Publishers had to be convinced about
making soft copies available for Braille conversion and copyright
issues had to be tackled. It was a race against time. There were
moments of retreat and defeat, but the willpower of my students gave
me the strength to fight. A huge chain of selfless volunteers
supported Niwant.Individual cause became the communal cause. Chak De
Niwant!

As a result, in the last seventeen years ‘Niwant’ tried to change the
social picture including discarded and unwanted members of the society
in the social fold. It has helped in a holistic development of the
children, one of ‘body, mind and soul’,successfully channelized their
energy through a Braille library which has over 3000 Braille books
(curricular and extracurricular), 17 branches of ‘Vision Unlimited’
all over Maharashtra and core teaching of all subjects through both
the mediums. There

Dear Friends,
Hope everyone is fine there.
Please go through the article given below about the technology centre
which is run only by the visually challenged youth and supported by
Rotary and share your feedback

With the help of latest technology, Karna Vidya aims to make
information more accessible to visually-impaired students. T.S. Atul
Swaminathan reports

A new centre for visually impaired students called Karna Vidya
Technology Centre has been started by Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel
(RCMC), in collaboration with Rotaract Club of Drishti.
Equipped with 20-seat computer classroom, the Centre trains students
from weaker sections, to enhance their education.
“Karna Vidya means learning through hearing. Visually challenged
students have enormous capacity to learn and gather information
through their keen hearing capabilities,” said G. Balasubrahmanyan,
former president, RCMC.
The assistive technologies makes information accessible to them. “The
Centre, which began in May this year, uses screen magnifier for
partially visually-impaired and conversion of information in to
accessible format through Digital Access Information System,” he
added.
It also has a Scanning and Reading Appliance Camera Edition, which is
a next-generation self-contained scanning and reading appliance for
the blind and those with low vision.
“At present, we are offering two four-month courses – Computer
Application with Screen Readers, and Soft Skills Development. The
Centre trains the students to get employed in IT companies and IT
Enabled Services as soft-skills trainer and technical trainer. We are
planning to introduce courses for Post-Graduate and Doctorate students
and professional and business courses such as Law and Information
Technology,” said K. Raghuraman, Co-ordinator, KVTC, and Professor,
Department of English, Government Arts College for Men, Nandanam.
Plans are in the pipeline to prepare students for State Government
examinations in various departments and establish a placement cell.
“We want to create an independent and accessible learning atmosphere
and impart professional and technical training programmes to enhance
students’ competence. After the basic courses we will introduce
advanced ones focusing on employment,” he added.
KVTC is a Rotary Foundation Grant Project in partnership with Rotary
District, Finland. The Centre is located at RR Tech Park, Thiru Vi Ka
Industrial Estate, Guindy.

Dear Friends,
Namasthee all. Yes, in the narrowest sense, this topic may not fit
into AI forum . But leave your prejudice and look with a broader
outlook. I am sure you will agree with me then that meditation is the
truest tool that will give richest access to one's mind ie self
control.

 Dear members of this group.

I want to suggest you that all of you must read this message. It may bring
 some changes in your life.

Meditation. One of the most powerful techniques of bringing one's mind to
rest, of getting tuned to the universe, and of bringing out the complete
potential of the great human mind. Meditation is one of the most under-used
techniques in the world. It is something that everyone should be doing, and
yet but a handful do. What a pity!

Unfortunately it is so commonly related to 'spirituality', that people shy
away from it. Of those who don't, many tell me that they don't meditate
because they can't clear their mind of thoughts.

You don't have to be spiritual, to meditate. You don't have to have a
complete control of your mind to meditate. You just have to be human.

Meditation is the process of eliminating thoughts, not vice versa.
Meditation helps you get a better hold over the whims and fancies of your
mind. In other words, it helps you control your mind instead of your mind
controlling you, as is often the case.

So how can you maditate? There are several techniques. The most effective is
to simply stop thinking - or if you aren't able to do that, start
'observing' your thoughts, as if it was someone else's mind and you were
just an observer. Eventually you will just stop thinking.

Another very powerful technique is to concentrate completely on your breath.
Don't control - just watch your breath. Focus all your senses on it, and
think of nothing else. Usually when you do this, you will find that your
breath slowly starts getting shorter and eventually comes to a stop. Here
you will reach a thoughtless state, which is very, very powerful.

A simpler technique is to imagine some object and think of nothing else. It
could be a flame, or your third eye, or anything else, for that matter. A
friend I knew, would imagine that she is running towards the sun forever.
Yet another method is to light up a candle and stare at it without blinking
until your eyes start watering. This is also a form of yoga, and you are so
caught up not trying to blink, that you simply cannot think of anything
 else.

If you are trying these techniques for meditation, I'd prefer that you start
from the first method and switch to the next if you find it tough, and so
on. Because the first technique is the most powerful, the next a little
less, and so on. Start from the first and move downwards, and see which one
 suits you best.

Everyone who meditates encounters thoughts. So if you find yourself thinking
too much when you meditate, relax, it happens. Over a period of months,
you'll find it reducing, and eventually you'll be able to reach that
 thought-less state much more easily.

2010-04-26 Thread surendra
Dear members of this group.

I want to suggest you that all of you must read this message. It may bring some
changes in your life.

Meditation. One of the most powerful techniques of bringing one's mind to rest,
of getting tuned to the universe, and of bringing out the complete potential of
the great human mind. Meditation is one of the most under-used techniques in
the world. It is something that everyone should be doing, and yet but a handful
do. What a pity!

Unfortunately it is so commonly related to 'spirituality', that people shy away
from it. Of those who don't, many tell me that they don't meditate because they
can't clear their mind of thoughts.

You don't have to be spiritual, to meditate. You don't have to have a complete
control of your mind to meditate. You just have to be human.

Meditation is the process of eliminating thoughts, not vice versa. Meditation
helps you get a better hold over the whims and fancies of your mind. In other
words, it helps you control your mind instead of your mind controlling you, as
is often the case.

So how can you maditate? There are several techniques. The most effective is to
simply stop thinking - or if you aren't able to do that, start 'observing' your
thoughts, as if it was someone else's mind and you were just an observer.
Eventually you will just stop thinking.

Another very powerful technique is to concentrate completely on your breath.
Don't control - just watch your breath. Focus all your senses on it, and think
of nothing else. Usually when you do this, you will find that your breath
slowly starts getting shorter and eventually comes to a stop. Here you will
reach a thoughtless state, which is very, very powerful.

A simpler technique is to imagine some object and think of nothing else. It
could be a flame, or your third eye, or anything else, for that matter. A
friend I knew, would imagine that she is running towards the sun forever. Yet
another method is to light up a candle and stare at it without blinking until
your eyes start watering. This is also a form of yoga, and you are so caught up
not trying to blink, that you simply cannot think of anything else.

If you are trying these techniques for meditation, I'd prefer that you start
from the first method and switch to the next if you find it tough, and so on.
Because the first technique is the most powerful, the next a little less, and
so on. Start from the first and move downwards, and see which one suits you
best.

Everyone who meditates encounters thoughts. So if you find yourself thinking
too much when you meditate, relax, it happens. Over a period of months, you'll
find it reducing, and eventually you'll be able to reach that thought-less
state much more easily.

Back TRAI rule on tariff plan change 'misused'

Staff Reporter

Kochi: A Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) notification designed
for the benefit of mobile phone consumers has given cell phone service
providers the opportunity to change tariff plans without the knowledge of
subscribers.

A 2004 TRAI notification inadvertently empowered service providers to
changemobile phone tariff plans without the subscriber's knowledge. In its
Telecommunication Tariff (Thirty First Amendment) Order, 2004', TRAI notified
that a tariff plan once offered by an access provider shall be available to a
subscriber for a minimum period of six months from the date of enrolment of the
subscriber to the tariff plan. It also mentioned that a subscriber would be
free to choose any other tariff plan even during that period.

The amendment was made with a view to encourage competitive tariff fixingby
mobile operators which would give the consumer plenty of options to choose
from. It is unfortunate that this is being distorted, said T. Balachandran,
TRAI Advisory Board Member. He also said he would bring this to TRAI's notice
at its next meeting on September 17 and 18.

The issue came to light when M.K. Haridas of 'The Proper Channel', aKochi-based
NGO, realised that his monthly mobile bill didn't tally with thetariff plan he
had opted for and that he was not informed of the plan shift. At the Consumer
Court, the service provider cited the TRAI notification in its defence.

Consumer should get complete plan

As per the law, a week after service activation, complete tariff plan should
be sent to the consumer. Subsequent change in plan should also be intimated,
said Mr. Haridas.

There is also provision for the consumer to shift from one plan to another
without paying migration fee. Strangely, very few telephone subscribers are
aware of the fact that if a problem in fixed line or broadband is not rectified
by the operator in three days, the consumer is eligible for a seven-day rent
subsidy. If it takes up to 15 days to fix the trouble, the subscriber should be
given a 15-day rent cut. The subscriber will get a full-month rent concession
if it takes more than 15 days for the company to do the repair, said Mr.
Haridas, calling for better consumer awareness in this regard. © Copyright 2000
