Re: [AI] Currency Detector
Hi Ravi, Thank you for your mail. Please do provide suggestions to help us better this. We have tried to reduce the time to recognize and also have ensured that the app works offline. We are currently working on getting some of the new notes added to the dataset. I do agree that we should be able to add new currencies as they get added and that is exactly our endeavor. It would be great if you can share you contact information at 6...@barrierbreak.com and all of us at 6 by 6, would be happy to work with you and anyone else on this. We understand the challenges and look at technology as an enabler not a replacement to accessible currency. Appreciate your feedback and thoughts on this. I can agree with the opinion that, when we are outside it poses a problem in instantly recognizing the notes quickly while paying at an establishment, maul, taxy drivers etc. So my suggestion is, if possible, kindly reduce the time the app takes to recognize a note, if possible, it should be very short. If the time of recognition is reduced, it will surely reach it's purpose. Further, Some say, the currency have to be made accessible for visually impaired, Yes I Agree with the statement, "they should be made accessible." However, there are many flaws in the idea, or, the approach to it has to be considered in a different manner. For example, if they make some notes with some markings which can be felt by us and find out what denomination it is, many of the times, as the currency flows through many hands and through ATM's, those markings on the note get very soft or undetectible as time passes. Further, When we say, currency should be made accessible, they cannot withdraw all existing notes of every denomination and reprint them with accessible marking or any kind of accessibility. For that, alternatively We can notify the proper powers to bring some kind of app or a gadget which might assist us in the day to day problem of identifying currency notes. Okay, some people may not be having android phones, or still might be using older phones. One solution for all this is, bringing a portable, light wait, handheld, miniature, battery powered, chargeable, device, about the size of the regular debit or credit card, which should recognize the note when placed on it, or something near to that. which should be accurate and should be able to recognize currency notes of every denomination within the time of one or two seconds and give audible feedback to the user in the kind of speach what value of note it has detected. And, later, if any changes are made to any notes, or if any new notes are released, the device's software should be able to update over our phone's bluetooth or by connecting it to our computer like that, so it will be having updated software about the newly released notes also. If this idea is incorporated and some proper people and powers take interest in the matter, this might become a very useful and final solution for all the problems we are having in day to day transaction of our indian currency notes. Re: [AI] Currency Detector
Hi George You would have seen in the news report regarding BGFI petition, the demand for accessible currency is strongly pitched for. The demand is that RBI formulates design guidelines taking into consideration the needs of VI persons. We know it will not be possible to phase out inaccessible currency in one go. Technology is therefore just an interim solution. By no means a final solution. We are very clear and articulate about it. My two cents on a simple solution that I use: 1. I use "BlindDroid Wallet" app to identify new notes 2. Every denomination note has a specific place / position in my wallet and hence there is no confusion at all Pramit On 1/11/2019 11:28 AM, Prashant Ranjan Verma wrote: The government must be forced to produce and distribute free of cost a standalone electronic device capable of recognizing the currency by just touch or by inserting any corner of the note into it. This kind of device is provided by the USA government to eligible citizens. It will be a small device, about the size of a credit card, a bit thicker, will need to be charged occasionally, and will announce the currency denomination in loud voice when the note is put on it. I understand that it may cost hundreds of rupees but the government must pay this kind of fine for the mess it has created with new and old notes in circulation. It should be easy for everyone to use. I have written about this earlier, also in a letter to RBI, but who cares on that side! Re: [AI] Currency Detector
I can't imagine the scene. I shall take the note from my pocket or wallet to my hand, then scan it with my mobile, listen to it and then pay with this note. It reminds me of a very famous Bengali story of the sixties by Shibram Chakraborty. A bus conductor is brought for trial for slapping a lady. Judge: Why did you slap a lady passenger? Conductor: When I went to the lady for ticket, she opened a handbag. She fumbled inside it for some time and brought out a small pouch from it. She then opened the pouch and brought out a purse. She then produced a paper pack from it. She unfolded the paper and produced a 10 paise. But by then I had moved forward to the front side of the bus, approaching other passengers for ticketts. She wrapped the paisa inside the paper, placed it in the purse, placed the purse in the pouch, and then put the pouch in the handbag and put the zipper in place. Five minutes later, I asked her for ticket agaij. She opened the handbag, brought out the pouch from the handbag, ... Judge: If you don't cut short, I shall give you a slap. Conductor: See, sir, I am only telling you what happened and you are losing patience. Feel my situation when it happened to me. With 13P camera, It told the 10 rupee note as 100 and sometimes 50 and so on. To be very frank, I didn't find this app better than the money reader. Money reader appears to be far more accurate. Sorry for a bad review but this was my experiece with this app. - Original Message - From: "George Abraham" To: "'AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled.'" Great to see this dialogue! In general, technology can assist to make our lives easier. How we use it and in the situations we use it, will depend on us. Technology always comes with its pros and cons and doesn’t take away from the actual solution being accessible, which in this case is currency! Technology is a choice and it depends on the people who find it useful. I think this is true to all things technology. My personal view. The app is a bad idea. At best it is usable when one is at home. While transacting with the auto driver or at a shop or in a public space, the blind customer and his app will test the patience of people. Besides I believe it would make us vulnerable. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Asudani, Rajesh Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2019 1:27 PM To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled. Hello Rajesh, As much as I know, user does not need to focus on a specific area of a note. Just have the focus on the note and it should be able to capture and announce the value. I would highly recommend try out the app. Being a person with low vision, I have used app's magnifier feature a lot and pretty cool. Also, I have demonstrated the app at a few places and people have really found it useful.
