RE: [ActiveDir] OT: Exchange Transaction logs

2005-04-15 Thread Douglas M. Long
Thanks to all those that replied. It turned out that I was backing up the
"Information store" and the information store files (like regular files). It
seems to me that if you back the information store up correctly that it should
flush the logs, even if you also back those files up incorrectly during the
same backup. Either way, it is working now, and I just wanted to thank everyone
for the OT subject.

Michel, thanks for the offer of personal assistance

This may sound like a simple suggestion, however did you reboot after
installing the Veritas agent on Exchange?

While your at it, check to make sure that Circular logging is off or you'll
have problems with Incremental Backups. One other issue that I found in Arcadia
Backup Exec 6 /Seagate 7 and Verritas 8 & 9 is that the Veritas service account
and mailbox you created requires that it not be hidden from the Global Address
list for brick level backups to work correctly.

Hope this helps,

No, the Exchange agent does not use VSS. You are
getting the error because you have the exchsrvr
directorie(s) included in the file-level portion of
your backup. Exclude those directories and check the
box that says "Exchange Information Store" or
something to that effect. Each backup software
package is different and you didn't specify which one
you are using.

RE: [ActiveDir] OT: Exchange Transaction logs

2005-04-12 Thread Bruyere, Michel
Hi,
I'm still not exactly sure of what you're saying but if I understand
correctly, you have "old" logs stored on a "file server". These logs are coming
from a time where there was no "exchange backups", so they were building up
eating disk space.
If this is right, having a good backup that committed the logs after the date
of those "stored logs" render them useless. So, yes you can delete them.

Sorry if I didn't got it right

RE: [ActiveDir] OT: Exchange Transaction logs

2005-04-12 Thread Burkes, Jeremy [Contractor]
Once you get a backup of the Exchange information store completed
successfully you can get rid of your old transaction logs from the other
server. You should also see any transaction logs that are currently on
the Exchange server automatically disappear once the backup is completed
if it is done right and successfully completes. What backup software
are you using and what components of the backup software have you
installed on either the backup server and/or the exchange server?

RE: [ActiveDir] OT: Exchange Transaction logs

2005-04-12 Thread Douglas M. Long
I guess I didn't make what I was saying very clear. A proper backup
won't clear the older logs that I am speaking of because that machine
(just a machine with disk space, not an exchange machine) is not being
backed up. I just don't know if I will need those older logs backed up
at all.

I do understand that once the backups are running properly, then I
shouldn't have to manage the transaction logs anymore.

If your Exchange backup is working correctly, you don't have to manage
the logs. A correctly configures exchange aware backup will purge the
logs for you after a successful backup.

I suggest that you bone up on your exchange backup and recovery
processes. As a start read the Exchange Server 2003 Disaster Recovery

So lets say I get the backup software working correctly (Duh, I forgot

have just moved all logs older than February to another machine to free
space. If I don't need to ever backup those transaction logs, then I
will just delete them once I have verified that the backups are working

Is there a recommended length of time to hold on to Exchange transaction

Is there any reason to keep transaction logs around any further back

Is it typical to enable circular logging, or does this somehow get you
into some issues if a disaster does happen?

2005-04-12 Thread Thijssen, Andries \(Cognizant\)

Using the 'open file option' in your backup product will not result in a
a good exchange backup. Either buy the exchange option, or use NT-backup
to create a normal Exchange backup. You can use NT backup to backup the
Exchange store to file and then include this file in your regular
backup.

You shouldn't delete them. Exchange will flush them after a "good"
backup. If your backup ends up successfully but the logs are still
there, then its because you don't backup Exchange using the right
method. Using a "flat file" backup isn't the proper way to backup
exchange. If you have a large collection of logs, and want to delete
them manually, then you won't be able to recover from a disaster (you
may, but it's gonna be tricky).

RE: [ActiveDir] OT: Exchange Transaction logs

2005-04-05 Thread Burkes, Jeremy [Contractor]
As other's have stated your transaction logs get automatically deleted
when the information store is backed up successfully.

Circular logging resuses existing transaction logs creating a total of 5
transaction logs with a total of 5 MB each in a round robin use. So
when log 5 files up it goes back and reuses log 1. The problem with
this is that if you have a database failure you will only be able to
restore the database to the point of the last successful backup
effectively losing whatever was in the database after the backup. If
circular logging is turned off you can restore your database and then
using the transaction logs "replay" until you get the database back to
where it was just before the crash. If you have the space I strongly
suggest you do not turn on circular logging.
