Antwort: Re: *SMs Thinking of OFFSITE Volumes ?

2001-01-09 Thread Gerhard Wolkerstorfer

Hi David, Hi Fred,

1) David - We aren't using the DRM
2) Fred - Your approach would work, I'm sure. Because, when the OFFSITE
Reclamation (or Move Data) ends after hundreds of mounts, then the now empty
Volumes Status is EMPTY and afterwards they are used for new copies again. (And
suddenly TSM doesn't think that this Volume is still OFFSITE how
strange..he will use it again..)

But our intention is to free up (reclaim) the Copy-Volumes, when they reach a
Reclamation-Threshold of 60% . and so i don't understand the suggestion of
Fred - because how can I tell TSM that he should create new copies instead of
the old Ones, which are on the OFFSITE Volume xx ?? And: I don't want to
Delete the Volume with Discard=yes (in this case, he would create a new copy
- but what happens, when a Primary Tape is corrupted ? Data is lost)

That's of course a new question .
What happens, when TSM is making an OFFSITE Reclamation, using the primary
tapes, and one of the primary Tapes is corrupt ?
Will the Reclamation Process fail ?
Will he then use the Copy-Volume with the Access=ReadWrite and will he change
his own opinion, that this volume is OFFSITE ??

One more hint in this point of view:
I tried the following: Setting the Access Status of the Primary Pool to
UNAVAILABLE and Move-Data of a Volume, which has Status Read/Write and where TSM
is thinking that it's OFFSITE. So I "forced" him to use a Volume from the
Primary Pool, which is unavailableand It's unbelievable, but even though
the Status is UNAVAILABE he is mounting and using a Tape of the unavailable
Primary Pool...

It works the same without DRM. Lower the Reclamation value on the offsite
pool. As a fresh version of the copypool is being created, the old one is
going to empty. When you're thru, send off the new version and bring back
the empties.

At 10:16 AM 1/8/2001 -0500, you wrote:
Are you using DRM? If so then you need to let reclamation empty the
volumes, then request from vault tapes that are in a DRM state of
vaultretrieve - which will be empty tapes. Then when there are back
then one way to handle is MOVE DRMEDIA xx wherestate=vaultr
tostate=onsiter for each tape, xx = volume name. These tapes are then
available to be checked back into your library as scratch tapes.

Hi *SMer,
We are reclaiming OFFSITE-Volumes, when they reach a Reclamation Threshold
of 60
Percent.
Therefor following steps are being done:
1) All pertaining OFFSITE Volumes come in from the offsite Location.
2) Following SQL Stmt will be performed for each Volume: (Setting the
Access of
the volume and the Location-Comment)
UPD VOL xx Access=ReadWrite Location=""
3) Set the Reclamation Threshold from 100% to 60% to start the Reclamation.

Now following Problem occurs:
TSM still thinks, that the volume is OFFSITE (However) and is making an
OFFSITE-Reclamation.
And the big Problem is: The original (primary) Tapepool is collocated and the
Copy-Pool isn't.
This means, that for OFFSITE-Reclamation for one Copy-Volume in the worst case
hundreds of mounts of the primary Volumes will be needed.
The same happens, when I am making a "manual" Move-Data... (See below the
example of a Move-Data)

So why is TSM still thinking, that the Volume is OFFSITE although the
Access-State is READ/WRITE ??
Even strange (look below) that it takes about 17 Minutes to determine,
where the
original Data is located and why is the Completion State of the canceled
process
SUCCESS ??

Our Server-Configuration is:
.) OS/390 V2 R9.0
.) Tivoli Storage Manager for MVS, Version 3, Release 7, Level 4.0

Is it a bug or a User Failure ?
Can someone help me ?

Thanks for all hints

I'd be interested in anybody's thoughts.

AW: AW: how to speed up NT restore?

2001-01-09 Thread Stefan Holzwarth

Thank you for reply!

We have the following situation:

Server TSM 3.7 @ MVS with 8 3590 Tapes and 80 GB Primary Storagepool, ATM
60 Clients (all NT4) with TSM 3.x and some big NT Servers with 2 or 3 100 GB
Volumes
and a lot of files on them. All over dedicated Tokenring into ATM backbone

A testrestore (compression off) of a single filespace(volume) uses only one
tape
(collocation on at filespace-level, reclaim 80%)and shows poor performance.
Most of the time the 2 MB/sec limit of Tokenring isn't touched.
Server CPU first 15 minutes very busy after that lazy.
Restore speed over all under 1 MB/sec.

Therefore we speak of a manageability of maximum 100 GB (~24 h restore time)
per filespace.
Now we intend to migrate to Netapp Toasters over Gigabit Ethernet.

What restoretimes can we expect? What can we improve?

The first thing i did after coming back from DR test , is
  that i enabled
collocation on tapepool and copypool ,
try to configure and define more drives to TSM , that is one
  way to go around ,
  I did restore with 8-10 drives , in stk9710

Also check TCP/IP window size parameter in dsmserv.opt file
if it is 0 make it

  Hello,

I have been restoring an NT client for about 8 hours
  now, a bare-metal

The server is an RS/6000 at ADSM 3.10.
The problem is that it until now only some MBs have been
  restored and
  the client
will need many GBs before it is done ... Looks like
  this could take
  days.

The activity log and 'q session' shows that the restore
  session is doing
  numerous
( DLT) tape mounts, and even when no mounts are
  outstanding very little
  data is
transferred from the server to the client. Looks like the
  data for this
  client might be spread
over hundreds of tapes. The storage pool for this client is not
  collocated.

Is there a way to speed up the restore?
Would it make sense to do an "export node" to tapes
 followed by an
"import node" in order to force
the data to fewer tapes or would I then just be spending
  time in the
  "export" instead?
Is there something else I can do?

There was a problem in some versions of the clients that gave this error

the length of your cluster name?

According to APAR IC26949, Tivoli fixed the problem in 3.7.2.02.

Antwort: Re: *SMs Thinking of OFFSITE Volumes ?

2001-01-09 Thread David Longo

For this one I have an answer because we have done it here.

You asked:

That's of course a new question .
What happens, when TSM is making an OFFSITE Reclamation, using the primary
tapes, and one of the primary Tapes is corrupt ?
Will the Reclamation Process fail ?
Will he then use the Copy-Volume with the Access=ReadWrite and will he change
his own opinion, that this volume is OFFSITE ??

Yes, the reclamation will fail in this case. To fix you do the following.

1. Try MOVE DATA on the tape that reclamation failed on (The primary tape in the
library). If that works then o.k. reclamation will work on next pass.

2. If it is really bad and move data doesn't work then you do RESTORE VOLUME vol_name
PREVIEW=YES. (this will not actually do anything but tell you what copytapes are
needed for the restore. Look at actlog when this process finishes and see the list of
tapes needed for restore, most will be offsite.)
(Also note one of these fine points: If you get the tapes back say tomorrow then it
is possible that some of the tapes have been totally expired and will not actually be
needed. You can do a PREVIEW again or just check them in anyway - won't hurt).

3. Request these tapes from offsite, check them into library (I just do search=bulk)
and ideally (may not always need to do this) change status of each one from offsite to
readonly)

4. RESTORE VOLUME vol_name. This will do actual restore. This recreates the data
that was on original primary tape to another primary tape. Note that it will also
mark original tape as desroyed. (You should check this original tape out of library
before the restore starts as it will be easier, I think.)

5. Change status of these tapes back to offsite and check them out of library and
send back offsite.

Re: Commits to fragmented DB

2001-01-09 Thread John Naylor

Hi,
We are on Version 3, Release 7, Level 20.0 of TSM on OS390
No you do not use idcams.
TSM has its own unload/load process for achieve a database defragmentation
This will also compress your database at the same time.
My advice is that if you can, test this process on a development partition
first.
If you have the a development TSM and the spare dasd you can achieve this by
restoring a dump of your production TSM, and then use that to test the
unload/load process.
This is what I did and has the advantages of giving you familiarity with the
process and
also how long it takes.
Be aware this is a long running process, hence the test, but if you cannot test
in advance,
I suggest you allow for 1 to 2 days of TSM unavailability.
You will find that you database will compress pretty well possibly by 50%, but
you may be
less impressed by any efficiency improvements.
There will be some, but when I tested the improvements I saw were in the 10%
area
Because my test proved that TSM would be unavailable too long to accept, and
because I
was not confident that the improvement would be long lasting I did not implement
in production
However see below the checklist I drew up at the time which may be useful

THIS A RUN THROUGH OF THE DBUNLOAD REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPRESSING THE
DATABASE
1) PRE-ALLOCATE AND FORMAT NEW LOGICAL DATABASE VOLS
THIS CAN BE DONE WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE OTHER STEPS (IF YOU HAVE
THE SPARE DASD) I PREPARED THE SAME NUMBER OF NEW LOGICAL VOLUMES AS
ALREADY EXISTED, BUT YOU COULD NORMALLY GET AWAY WITH LESS AS THE
DATABASE AFTER THE UNLOAD/RELOAD WILL OCCUPY LESS SPACE THAN BEFORE.
2) STOP ANY PROCESSES AND DISABLE SESSIONS
3) WRITE TO A DATA SET FOR LATER COMPARISON SOME QUERIES FROM THE DB
4)TAKE COPIES OF DISKLOG, DEVICE CONFIG VOLHIST FILES (BELT BRACES)
TAKE SOME QUERIES AGAINST DATABASE FOR COMPARE AFTER LOAD (SEE 12)
5) PERFORM FULL ONLINE BACKUP OF THE DATABASE
6) ISSUE HALT QUIESCE OF THE DATABASE.
7)AFTER DATABASE HALTED, PERFORM THE UNLOAD
8)IF YOU WANT TO USE THE SAME NAMES AS YOUR EXISTING DATABASE VOLS THEN
RENAME THE OLD DATA SETS, AND RENAME THE ONES YOU HAVE PRE-FORMATTED TO
YOUR OLD NAMES. THIS IS OPTIONAL.
9) RUN THE DBFORMAT JOB. THIS WILL FORMAT THE RECOVERY LOG BUT NOT THE
DATABASE, BUT WILL UPDATE THE DISKLOG TO THE CLUSTER NAMES OF THE PRE-
FORMATTED DATABASE VOLUMES.
10) LOAD THE DATABASE SPECIFYING THE TAPE THAT WAS USED IN THE UNLOAD
JOB
11) START THE DATABASE
12) COMPARE OUTPUT OF QUERIES WITH THOSE TAKEN PRIOR TO THE HALT TSM
(Q OCC Q VOL COULD BE USED, Q DB SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN ANYWAY SO YOU
CAN SEE HOW MUCH THE DATABASE HAS BEEN COMPRESSED)

Subject: Commits to fragmented DB

Hi *SMers!

We are running TSM Version 3, Release 7, Level 4.0 on OS/390.

Recently we have been encountering problems with our recovery log filling up
quickly. Our DB is 38 gb and the recovery log is at the maximum amount of 5
gb. We've been told that our problem with the recovery log is due to our
database being so fragmented, therefore it takes a long time to complete the
commits. Support was then surprised to hear that this is the same database
that we've been using since ADSM Version 2.

Is this so unusual???

I've tried searching the Redbooks for upkeep procedures like they used to
have for DFSMShsm, but can't find anything. I'm particularly interested in
reorganizing/defragging the database. Is there some TSM utility to do this
or will we need to use IDCAMS as we do for other VSAM files?

Thanks!

csrss.exe comes back as a Microsoft copywrited executable. Therefore it is
part of the NT OS. Its discription field reads "Client Server Runtime

Tivoli Support has, quite promptly, answered:

The TSM 4.1.2 client is compatible with ADSM 3.1. Some
functionality offered by TSM isn't available, but the client will
work. IBM/Tivoli recommend you upgrade to TSM before using in a
production environment, but I understand that isn't possible
when using VM.

HSM age factor

2001-01-09 Thread Matthew A. Bacchi

Hello all,

We are attempting to understand the age factor parameter of HSM a little
better. I know that the age factor is used to prioritize the files eligible
for migration. Is there a way to make HSM look at the last access time of a
file before it marks it as an eligible candidate to migrate?

For example, we wish to keep files on the local filesystem for 90 days before
having them migrate. Can this be done with just the age factor? My
understanding of the age factor parameter says that this is not possible.
Therefore I'm thinking I need to employ a script that will modify the EXCLUDE
list until a file hasn't been used for 90 days. Then when I remove it from
the exclude list, it should be migrated as an eligible file.

Does anyone have any insight or opinions on this?

Thanks,

Hi

Can anyone assist?

We're running AIX 4.3.2 with ADSM 3.1.2.20 and have just installed an IBM 3995-C66.
AIX correctly recognises the library and it has been configured to ADSM yet
we get an error message:

03/01/01 15:10:10 ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rop1, error number=46.

when trying to access it. I believe this is device not ready - is the 3995-C66
supported at this level of ADSM. We have extended device support by the way.

Matt - It is the Access time that is used in the Age Factor.
You can use the dsmmigfs command to set the Factor, which will
guide migration choices. The specification is relative, not precise like
saying "90 days", as the need for space governs migration and unless the
file system is very capacious, we really don't have much choice about
migration when a space crunch is at hand: space needs to be made, and
migration must run. If you did have the space, you could simply run
dsmmigrate via the Unix 'find' command, for example, to every day migrate
files not accessed for N days.

Not to beat a dead horse as I am just getting caught up on email. I have
also experienced this problem and it was explained to me that the reason the
tape is tried in several different drives is to verify that it isn't a drive
problem but actually a tape problem. I agree it is a problem because a job
will end if it failed too much. Please let me know if my understanding is
incorrect

Hi Steve,

I think that the 'set to private' process is working, but it
appears that it is only applied to tape vols that have an error
when reading the label and not when a 'media fault' occurs.
Please see the following:

ANR8778W Scratch volume NT0066 changed to Private Status

I thought there was a ptf somewhere along the way that addressed this
problem. I thought it's supposed to set the volume to private so that it
doesn't attempt to mount the same scratch tape again. I think Richard

Merging Nodes on TSM

2001-01-09 Thread Miller, Ryan
Title: ryan

We have a
situation where we are combining Netware servers, making 1 from 2. This
leaves us with old nodes because we are not able to combine the nodes to make 1
from 2. We have tried the export/import function, but due to the size of
our filespaces this takes in excess of 3 days, and we miss 3 days worth of data
changes. We need to have a solution that allows us associate filespaces
from one node to another. Has anyone heard of anything or had this same
situation before? Thanks in advance for any

Custom dsm.opt in Client v4.1.2

2001-01-09 Thread Jennifer I. Moore

Gentle Greetings,

Has anyone yet succeeded in installing a predefined (custom) dsm.opt file
with TSM client version 4.1.2? So far all of our attempts have
failed... the installer seems to ignore anything I put in the ...\config
folder.

I have read and tried to follow the instructions in the README that came
with 4.1.2, though I have some concern that the path referenced there does
not reflect the path to the config folder after extracting the files from
the 4.1.2 installer exe. It looks more like the path that was used in
previous versions. So I wonder if this process works in this version.

Thank you in advance for any help, suggestions, and/or shared experiences.

Client v4.1.2 -- Uninstall on NT results in blank desktop?

2001-01-09 Thread Jennifer I. Moore

Gentle Greetings,

We've noticed a strange behavior when uninstalling TSM client v4.1.2 on an
NT 4.0 Workstation system (SP5). When the Add/Remove Programs process
finishes, the desktop goes to a blank grey screen with only the Start menu
and Task Bar showing. Right-clicking in the grey area results in a Desktop
message as follows:

C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Desktop is not accessible. Access is
denied. Retry. Cancel.

Retry results in the same message. Cancel returns to the blank grey
screen. The only way we've found to get out of this is to restart the
machine. (Fortunately, the Start menu still works fine, so it's not
necessary to be brutal about the restart.)

Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

Thank you in advance for any help, information, and/or shared experiences.

2001-01-09 Thread Kelly J. Lipp

This is a reprise of a thread started in December.

Flame on:

HAS ANYONE MADE THIS WORK WITH TSM 4.1???

Flame off.

The documentation is not clear: Does ADSMSCSI support this baby or do we
need to use the device drivers shipped with the library? The library
documentation suggests that if you are going to use TSM you should not use
the drivers shipped with the library. If, on the other hand, you simply
start the TSM device driver, one can't see the drives.

Could anyone that has made this work please document here what you did?

Thanks,

BTW, if we figure it out we'll post what we learned.
