FW: Delay on script

2001-11-20 Thread Robert Ouzen

To all

I resoved my problem by scheduling a checkout as some of you suggest.

Here the script: (DRM_OUT)

backup db devclass=scalarclass type=dbs wait=yes
backup devconfig
backup volhistory
delete schedule checkout t=a
define schedule checkout t=a cmd='run checkout_offsite' startt=now+00:18
dur=15 duru=m per=1 peru=o active=yes

Here is the CHECKOUT_OFFSITE script:

move media * stg=sca_drm wherestatus=full,filling wherestate=mountableinlib
ovflocation="OFFSITE" remove=bulk checklabel=no
move drmedia * source=dbs wherestate=mountable tostate=vault remove=bulk
delete schedule checkout t=a

Regards Robert Ouzen

P.S Thanks for the response

Would the MOUNTRetention for his DEVClass be what's happening here? The BA
DB command completes, but TSM keeps the tape mounted for MOUNTR minutes. The
checkout won't work if the tape is mounted. Maybe, like was suggested
previously, the script could schedule the checkout command for NOW+MOUNTR
from now? That would give TSM time to dismount the tape before checking it
out.

Why don't you publish that script for us here? The wait=yes should guarantee
that the dbs run should finish before it goes to the next step in the batch
file.

Problem with german "umlaut" in Linux-Client?

Hi together,

Antwort: Help please with collocation

2001-11-20 Thread Jan Moewe

Hi Farren,

the main reason to backup data is to be prepared to restore them.
If you want to make your restore faster, collocation is a good option.
In an Enviroment without collocation, data for one client will spread over
all tapes in the tapepool.
At restore TSM will do this for every tape:
Mount tape, wind forward to data location, read data, rewind tape, unmount
tape.
With collocation enabled you will reduce the number of tape mounts, this
will
save a reasonable amount of restore time.
If you backup incremental only the data needed for restore are not
continous on tape and this will happen at restore:
Mount tape, wind forward to data location, read data, wind forward to next
data location, read data ... (doing this for every little piece of data)
..., rewind tape, unmount tape.
Make an extra selective backup from time to time to avoid/reduce this. It
will make your restore even faster.

Greetings
Jan Möwe

Hello again TSMers

I have some another questions, this time regarding collocation.

At present we are backing up 21 client nodes and have a backup pool made up
of DISKPOOL and TAPEPOOL. Then we have our off-site volumes, imaginatively
entitled COPYPOOL. I am thinking that we do not necessarily need to use
collocation for all of our nodes; maybe just for five or six of our more
important ones (we do backup sets for these as well).

The questions are as follows:-

1) What are peoples thoughts on collocation in the first place. Is it
generally a good idea? Any thoughts really?
2) Secondly, can someone tell me a good, clean, simple way of achieving
only collocating certain clients.
3) Also, baring in mind that at present, we back up all clients to one
COPYPOOL, what would be the implications of a) moving some clients to a new
backup COPYPOOL (what happens to all the data currently stored on the
original COPYPOOL and b) turning off collocation for the original COPYPOOL
(i.e. would this lead to a very long reclamation run).

There is probably a lot more inf. that I should have included here, but I
am relatively new and probably don't know the questions to ask.

Thanks again and I look forward to any help you can all give me.

All the best

Re: Delay on script

2001-11-20 Thread Maurice van 't Loo

No, he was right, the script goes on when the DB backup is ended. But when
the DB backup is ready, it starts to dismount the tape. It doesn't wait
until it's dismounted.

I think a sleep command is usefull in many scripts

I make the scripts in AIX, there i've got more options and can make
if/then's etc.

Please!:A Temp-File COPY POOL Solution

2001-11-20 Thread Michel David

Hi Everybody. Thank you for precedent answers !

I try to to be more understandable !!

 Here's the new problem:
We have a 120GB Disk for pool (like 1 tape capacity)
We would like, each day, to Copy the Archive Pool to
a
FILE POOL on this disk (remote disk).
Parallely we will continue to use a regular tape for
copy pool.

After the Copy Tape is full we'll like to empty the
DISK POOL and to begin to backup on the new tape and
on the Empty Disk every day.

This method has the advantage to save data on a remote
computer (network connected) that can be in another
place every day and ASSURE that we cannot lose more
than ONE day info. Even if the Library Box is burned!

For sure we need to be sure that we can recover from
the DISK POOL the stored info there.

Is there a solution ?
Is there a trick ?

 TIVOLI 3.7.4
 NT4.0 (soon 2000)
 QUALSTAR AIT1/2 librs.
API Used for Archives (not Copy Pool)

 Thank you
 Michel

IF your routing on the ATL's pc isn't right, you can see a message such as
that.
(that is if you are using tcp/ip communication method)
or if that specific host for some reason got wiped from your list of LAN

(that is if you are using tcp/ip communication method)
If you are using the RS232 connection, then maybe the port on the artic card
is defined incorrectly ?

Can anyone suggest a place to look when I get a message: library offline to
host.
I've already recycled lmcpd. I checked my lan host options and they haven't
changed.
When I attempt to communicate with the 3494 library via MTLIB commands from
my sun server I get this message.
We made a microcode change to the library over the weekend and this one
server(out of three) is now not communicating with the library.
two other sun servers are not having any problems via mtlib or thru TSM.

I wonder if someone had the same problem, that on unix clients

Has someone seen this effect and stopped it ?

for example to produce this effect on unix:

Re: Problem with german "umlaut" in Linux-Client?

2001-11-20 Thread Rainer Wolf

Hi,

as in the readme mentioned you must set your LANG

- The TSM Linux x86 B/A client is now enabled to handle file names using
multibyte character sets. The characters are displayed correctly, if the
LANG environment is set to the appropriate language.
...

backup on those files will fail, if LANG is not set
If LANG is not system-wide you may set it in your start-script of the scheduler
and always define it before you use the dcmc - interactively.
for example
bash> export LANG=en_US; dsmc inc

One server, two ip-addresses

2001-11-20 Thread Wouter V

Hello,

Does anybody know if a single TSM server can listen on different ip-adresses
(on different nic's) ? Or do you need to run multiple instances on one
machine ?

TSM Server Config example :

Listening for backup data on NIC1 : 192.168.10.10:1500
  and on NIC2 : 10.10.10.10:1500
+ other nic for normal lan traffic

Just wondering if adding extra LAN cards in every client to increase the
total bandwith, is a
cheap alternative for SAN environments.

For example : client config with 3 NIC's :
NIC1 : regular client traffic
NIC2 : for online database backup (scheduler 1)
(backup lan 1)
NIC3 : for backup of regular file (scheduler 2)
(backup lan 2)

2 x 100 Mbit bandwith to backup

Any remarks about this ? I agree, it isn't a good alternative, but I was
just wondering if this is possible ?

Thanks !

Wouter Verschaeve

Audit Library doesn´t complete

2001-11-20 Thread Robin v/d Vliet

Hi fellow TSM admins/lovers/friends,

We´ve scheduled an Audit Library to run every day on our TSM 4.2 for AIX with
IBM LTO drives.

The Audit starts succesfully but this process won´t complete. The day after we
still see this Audit Library process as active and this disrupts our other
schedules, like archives and migration because they both need acces to the
drives.
The only way we can free the drives for the other schedules is to Cancel the
Audit Library process

Since the Actlog doesn´t show errors on the Audit schedule we can´t figure out
what the problem might be.

Any help or tips would be of great use to us,

Thanks in advance,

Robin van der Vliet

Hello,

Does anybody know if a single TSM server can listen on different
ip-adresses
(on different nic's) ? Or do you need to run multiple instances on one
machine ?

TSM Server Config example :

Listening for backup data on NIC1 : 192.168.10.10:1500
  and on NIC2 : 10.10.10.10:1500
+ other nic for normal lan traffic

Just wondering if adding extra LAN cards in every client to increase the
total bandwith, is a
cheap alternative for SAN environments.

For example : client config with 3 NIC's :
NIC1 : regular client traffic
NIC2 : for online database backup
(scheduler 1) (backup lan 1)
NIC3 : for backup of regular file
(scheduler 2) (backup lan 2)

2 x 100 Mbit bandwith to backup

Any remarks about this ? I agree, it isn't a good alternative, but I was
just wondering if this is possible ?

Thanks !

move server

2001-11-20 Thread Klaus Weber

Hello,
actually we have 3 tsm - server on OS/390 and 1 tsm -server on W2K.
Now we want to consolidate all these server to one on SUN Solaris, but the
tapes will stay in th same library with the same devices.

How can I move these server to SUN Solaris without copy a lot of data
physically, because this will need a long time and a lot amount of tape
drives?

Can I backup the database and restore it on SUN Solaris to avoid coping the
data ?
Or can I use server to server connection in any usefull way ?

In the case I have to install a new tsm server so the data on the old one
will expire:
How does the old tsm server know there are new versions of files on the new
one?
So the data on the old server can expire if I get newer versions on the new
server.

bare metal recovery for NT2000

2001-11-20 Thread Salak Juraj

hello all out there,

BMR related questions seem to repeat periodically
and good solutions are not obvious.

I would like to share results of my trivial search after tools for TSM
related BMR of W2000:

- virtually no support in current TSM clients, if any

- rumours about BMR (either additional functionality or additional
module$$) in the next version of TSM,
maybe adoption of the Kernel Group´s solution, maybe Tivoli´s own
solution.

- currently available BMR from Kernel group looks good,
its limitation could be its high costs,
and for some of us the necessity to install an additional unix-based
BMR-server applikation.

- there is currently available BMR solutions in different simpler backup
packages (not TSMM-related).
I gave a look to Pc-Bax from Cristie, Germany, because I know older
versions
of this simple but good backup program, and I liked the support as well.

They currently do have a usefull BMR module but without TSM
connectivity.
They had TSM-conectivity in the past and they claim to offer this module
soon again.

They are much cheaper than the solution from Kernel Group.

For those interested I will likely test this in january or february,
but I currently do not know more details,
so please if you have questions do contact  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
http://www.cristie.com

I posted his name here with allowance from Mr. Svensson / Sweeden
who implemented mixed scenario of Pc-Bax and TSM.
His solutions is shortly desribed further, in appended copy of his mail.

Dear Mr. Salak!
I have now work with both TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager) and Legato
NetWorker and found a small solution for are customer here in Sweden
there they use PC-BaX ass a BMR. (Bare Metal Recovery).
Right now PC-BaX dose´nt have support to backup directly to TSM Server.
But we have talk to Tivoli and to Cristie in UK and we going to get a
TSM Module shortly.
But the work around right now looking like this.
1) TSM takes backup on D:, E: and et c.
2) PC-BaX takes backup on C: every Sunday or more often. But you back up
to a Virtuel Tape Drive (VTD file) on a Virtuel hardisk Space on the
network. For exaple a NAS Server.
3) And the TSM is back up the VTD files so you got 2 or more generation.

But how is the Recovery works?
1) You run a normal PC-BaX DR (Disaster Recovery) and after that PC-BaX
is automaticloy starts TSM restore or the TSM Client.

How do I configur PC-BaX to do this.
1) Mr. Tillmann can help you to configure the PC-BaX disketts.
2a) You create one CMD file in to the PC-BaX directory with name TSM.CMD

2b) Edit the CMD file and type in
@Echo Off
CD \
CD "Program Files\TSM"
Net start "TSM Client Acceptor"
Net start "TSM Scheduler"
DSMC restore \\servername\d$\path\path\*  -subdir=yes
3) And edit CBM.INI and insert this too linje in the bottom.
[DR Options]
PostDRCommand = TSM.cmd

If you need any help with PC-BaX please take contact with Mr. Tillmann
on Cristie Germany or me.

Dear sir,

I have got your address from mr. Tillmann.

I´d like to check the feasibility and sensiblity of following scenario:

- we will in short use TSM as our primary and centralized backup system.
The native TSM backup client is splendid for incremental backup and
restores of limited file areas.

Backup/restore in sense of temporary storage space
and in the sense of bare metal recovery of operating system (BMR)
is traditionaly better serverd by simple classical
backup systems, like pc-bax.

- I would like to combine strengths of both systems,
using pc-bax for certain tasks like BMR
while saving data in automatically managed storage pools of TSM.

Can you make a statement about this aim?

Can you ping the library from that server? Also, have you checked the
library manager log? You need to go into service mode, and then it's one of
the menu choices. Can't remember which one and I'm at home so I can't check
right now. The LM will do a reverse name lookup on the IP address and if it
doesn't match what you've coded, the session is rejected. That will show up
in the LM log. Maybe that server is now know differently via DNS? Or a
different network adapter is now being used and that adapters IP address
doesn't reverse lookup the same...? You may have to add it to the HOSTS
file
on the LM OS/2 box.

Can anyone suggest a place to look when I get a message: library offline to

I've already recycled lmcpd. I checked my lan host options and they haven't
changed.
When I attempt to communicate with the 3494 library via MTLIB commands from
my sun server I get this message.
We made a microcode change to the library over the weekend and this one
server(out of three) is now not communicating with the library.
two other sun servers are not having any problems via mtlib or thru TSM.

Configuration depends on the platform. For instance, we found that on AIX
the interfaces had to be configured on the command line and not with
SMIT. A minor annoyance when an interface goes down in the middle of the
night and you're trying to remember the proper syntax.

Re: Statistics problem with TSM backup.

2001-11-20 Thread Mahesh Tailor

Sreekumar,

What is your Maximum Size Threshold set to for your diskpool? If it is set low and
you have files that exceed that setting, they will be sent directly to your next
storage pool (3575_AFS, 3575_ARCH, or 3575_BKUP) which will affect the disk storage
pool utilization.

Hope this helps.

says only 13.5 % is occupied in 80GB space. (13.5% may also include other

We have one that uses three (3).
Two fast ethernet & one GB.
You have to remember that your standard TCP/IP routing is what
determines
how these boxes talk !
Client traffic will go in which ever interface you point to and will
return
out to the client based on standard routing in the system (but will
go back
to the ip in the received packets).

Back when we built our environments "SAN" wasn't really around so we
built a
sudo-SAN. Works great !

Our busiest S70 TSM server (just 2 processors & 1 GB memory) seems
to max
out at about 60-ish GB/hr of inbound compressed client data
(actually kind
of hard to find enough clients to push more than that ;-) but I need
to
check recent #'s )
(so during DB backups, that is about 240 GB/hr of client
file spaces
being backed up)

Is this good or bad ? ? ?
It is just what we see and it serves our needs !

TSM Server Config example :

Just wondering if adding extra LAN cards in every client to increase

Any remarks about this ? I agree, it isn't a good alternative, but

Re: BMR for Win2k: Use of NTBACKUP

2001-11-20 Thread Michael Bartl

In a standard Win2k environment bare metal recovery using TSM doesn't
work. Of course, the Kernel Group BMR is a great tool, but expensive.

We're investigating another (free) method:
Use NTBACKUP for a backup of all system objects into a file on your
harddisk (about 250MB),
do a TSM incremental afterwards that includes the NTBACKUP file and skip
the system objects (BACKUPREGISTRY NO).

The commandline for NTBACKUP (thanks to Stefan Holzwarth/ADAC) is:
NTBACKUP BACKUP SYSTEMSTATE /F "targetfilename" /L:s /J "your comment"

During restore you can setup a standard Win2k and restore all files from
TSM. Instead of restoring the system objects you just restore the
NTBACKUP file and let NTBACKUP finalize the restore of the system
objects.

We're trying to get more experience during our tests within the next few
days. I'll give a short howto-description when we have come to a result.

Best regards,
Michael Bartl

Re: Please!:A Temp-File COPY POOL Solution

2001-11-20 Thread Seay, Paul

If the remote computer is a TSM server or you have SANergy and maybe with
the SAN client you can delete the remote storage pool with the discard=yes
and it should get rid of everything. I have not tried this in this
scenario. Then redefine the storage pool and perform another copy.
However, you are vulnerable for the time it takes to redo the copy.

I am not sure why you are not just keeping two copy pools (one local and one
remote) in synchronization with the primary.

You would define a file device class on the remote system.

 Thank you

ONE-DAY SAFETY PROBLEM (cont)

2001-11-20 Thread Michel David

Hi Everybody. Thank you , Paul.
Sorry I was not clear enough.

How can user assure that all the data will be
retrieved if the library is physically damaged
(fire...) ?

We'll have only the last version of DBBACKUP and the
OFSSITE POOL. Maybe it's can be one week of work
without BACKUP.
If we don't want to eject a tape every day and store
it in a SAFE place. We have to find someting else.

We have ONE Library and another big HD in another
place.

* One Copy Pool (like everyone) inside the lib (for
the FILLING tape)
* Another Copy Pool (DEVCLASS=FILE) in a network DISK.
(Or any other solution is welcome)

I want to use this small (~) hard-disk of 120 GB to
store only what I am saving on the used filling Tape
of the Copy Pool.

That's all.
I hope I was clear enough

Thank's
Michel

Informix restore using TSM

2001-11-20 Thread Sarver, Theresa (Osky Unix Administrator)

Hello;

We are in a 3-tier environment:
Server1 - Informix Database 7.24 UC5 and TSM 4.1.1 server
Server2 - Baan IVb3

The TSM client on Server1 (that Informix connects with) is using an old
[ADSM] version...3.8 - I believe? This was done because it was the only way
Informix would connect to TSM without having to purchase TDP for Informix.
(not my choice, nor was I part of that decision)

Anyway...

This morning Server1 crashed - we lost the I/O board. While I await IBM's
arrival with the replacement part I am contemplating the worst...having to
restore Informix. I am fairly new to this job and have never restored
Informix (or anything else for that matter) with TSM. Three years ago when
Informix and ADSM were brought online a full database restore was preformed
and it was successful...but other than that I do not believe it has been
done since. The person who was incharge of TSM and Informix
"abruptly" left the firm and I got "stuck" administering them. ;)

If anyone out there has ever preformed an Informix restore would you be so
kind and to provide me with some steps. I'd welcome any help anyone has to
offer at this point.

Thank you;
Theresa

Re: Future Share Requirement: W2K 4.2.1 Desktop Archive Client ba cks up files that are unmodified

2001-11-20 Thread Andrew Raibeck

Well, technically speaking, SELECTIVE and MODE=ABSOLUTE are not identical:

- SELECTIVE backup backs up everything that is not excluded via EXCLUDE
(INCLUDE/EXCLUDE processing is *always* honored). On the other hand, if
you use multiple management classes and not all of them have
MODE=ABSOLUTE, then only those files that are bound to the management
class with MODE=ABSOLUTE will be backed up if they haven't changed. For
example, if I have two management classes, MGMTA with MODE=MODIFIED and
MGMTB with MODE=ABSOLUTE, and I have something like this:

   include *:\...\* MGMTA
   include c:\mydir\...\* MGMTB

Then if I run an incremnetal backup, the MODE=ABSOLUTE will only apply to
the files in C:\MYDIR. On the other hand, a SELECTIVE backup of C:\ with
-SUBDIR=YES will back up all files regardless of whether they have changed
(except files that are excluded).

- When using MODE=ABSOLUTE, the client will not attempt to back up files
that are excluded. When using SELECTIVE, TSM will try to back up
everything in the file specification, including files that are excluded
These files will get a message saying that they are skipped because they
are excluded. This is arguably the only real virtue of using MODE=ABSOLUTE
vs. SELECTIVE backup: the former doesn't generate the "file skipped due to
exclude" message, while the latter does. But as long as it is understood
why the "file skipped" messages appear, this is a minor nit.

So no, the internal processing is not *identical*, but for all practical
intents and purposes, you can make them behave similarly.

If the user wants to back up his entire machine with local drives C:, E:,
and F:, then the following command will work:

   dsmc s c:\ e:\ f:\ -subdir=yes

This will back up all files, except those that are excluded.

If you set all management classes so that MODE=ABSOLUTE, then the
following command:

   dsmc i c: e: f:

will also back up all files, except those that are excluded.

If you prefer the SELECTIVE method, then for users who want weekly full
backups and daily incremental backups (the traditional "full +
incremental" approach), you could create a schedule with

   ACTION=SELECTIVE
   OBJECTS="C:\ E:\ F:\"
   OPTIONS="-SUBDIR=YES"

that runs only once a week, say, on Saturday. If you have another schedule
that runs incrmental backups Monday - Friday, then you can associate users
to both schedules, and the full + incremental backups are fully automated.

Andy

I tried to find the statement where a selective was not the same as an
incremental absolute but could not find it (thought I saw something like
that). So it looks like the mechanism is to setup for modified and when
you
need a full backup use a selective specifying the entire client file
system.

I think you make the most important distinction here between a backup
utility and a storage management product. TSM is used to manage storage
and
its recovery during a failure. A backup utility is used to perform
backups
and hope you can get restores. That is why I joke about a competitive
product being ???backup, gross no restore (a little play with words).

So, I think we are at the documentation needs to be fixed.

As a former customer and MVS storage administrator myself, I certainly
wouldn't want my users modifying SMS policies, either directly or
indirectly. In the same fashion, I wouldn't want them modifying my TSM
policies. Allowing users to specify -mode=absolute from the client is
effectively doing just that. Also, if we were to allow users to modify the
MODE setting, then the precedent would be set: next, users will want to be
able to modify VEREXISTS, VERDELETED, RETEXTRA, FREQUENCY, etc. Then the
whole concept of policy-based storage management goes out the window.

Even if you don't want to modify your TSM policy settings, I still don't
see what functionality a "-mode=absolute" option would give you that you
don't already have today via the SELECTIVE command. But yes, if this is
still something you require, then the requirements route is the best way
to go.

ODBC and TSM timestamp data type (Crystal Reports)

2001-11-20 Thread Ken Long

I know some of you are running Crystal Reports against the TSM database,
hopefully you can steer me straight.

I can't get Crystal to render any of the TSM timestamp fields - I always
get 0's for the timestamp. For example, the Start_Time field on the
Summary table. All times display as 12:00:00 am. Browsing the data for
the data for the field shows: DateTime(0,0,0,00,00,00).

Needless to say, this makes it difficult to just show results from
yesterday.

I'm using Seagate Crystal Reports 8.0.1.1 and the TSM ODBC driver
4.02.01.00 (part of the 4.2.1 Win32 client.) ODBCADSM.DLL is dated
8/3/2001.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Library offline to host

2001-11-20 Thread William Boyer

Another problem I had with the LM was by default the @&#^$# thing added a
route for my subnet to the default gateway. SO, as long as the address was
outside of my subnet, I could talk to it. If it was on the same subnet
(which was where my TSM server was located) then it was being sent to the
default gateway and I wasn't communicating. I found it by looking at the
routine table on the OS/2 LM. netstat -r is the command I believe. I did a
route delete and it was OK until the next time the LM was restarted. Finally
found the configuration problem when I went in and viewed the TCPIP
configuration dialog. There was a check box that I had to un-check. And
don't ask me which option this wasthe mind is the 2nd thing to go with
age!

IF your routing on the ATL's pc isn't right, you can see a message such as
that.
(that is if you are using tcp/ip communication method)
or if that specific host for some reason got wiped from your list of LAN
hosts

Re: Statistics problem with TSM backup.

2001-11-20 Thread William Boyer

This is the amount of bytes transferred, not the amount of data backed up.
They are 2 different animals. I had this issue with one of my Notes
administrators. I was telling him that his main Notes server was backing up
50GB/night, but his filespace only showed 24GB used. This number of bytes
transferred includes the retries. When I went in and looked at the
DSMSCHED.LOG file with VERBOSE coded, I saw all kinds of retries because the
file was changing. Had to eat crow on that one! :-)

Dumb Exchange question

2001-11-20 Thread Tyree, David

We will be upgrading to the new TDP for Exchange 2.2 from version
1.1 some time after the first of the year and we are wondering if the newer
version supports individual mailbox recovery. I know the 1.1 version didn't
easily support mailbox recovery, you had to build a new Exchange box, dump
an entire database restore to it and then export the mailbox back to the
production system.
Do will still need to jump through all the same hoops again to
restore a mailbox in version 2.2??

The Audit starts succesfully but this process won´t complete. The day after

Re: Informix TDP expire/expiring Onbar log files

2001-11-20 Thread George Lesho

Joel, Not sure what you mean by an "onbar log". Are you talking about the
Informix logical logs? If so, put them in an "archive" management
class/copy group along with your database backups. Each logical log has a
unique file name so efforts to expire them if you use backup type
management class/copy groups can be frustrating. As an archive, they will
expire in a finite number of days (pre copy group rules for the mgmt
class). Since you didn't mention how you did your backups, I can't help you
with how to pin the archive management class to the backup. I use SQL
BackTrack for Informix
and they do it when you build one of their "backup pools" (not to be
confused with TSM stgpools). If you are not using BMC SBTI for a "storage
manager" and are only using TSM, then you may be able to do it in an incl
statement. Not sure how TDP for Informix does it...

I'm looking for a script or method to expire onbar logs. If you have one,
would you please share it.

Back in January 1999, Christoph Martin shared a routine with the adsm list
which would expire a file. I wrapped his routine in a perl script which
selected the old log file. This worked great until Tivoli "improved" the
backup library, added it to the TDP line and started charging the big bucks
for it. Now Christoph's routine fails with the error:
*** BSAInit failed: (12) An entry in the environment structure is invalid

I've tried rebuilding it with the newest API but that didn't help.

Re: Dumb Exchange question

TDP 2.2 doesn't backup individual mailbox. For each backup tool that perform
this kind of operation backup are very, very, very slow. It have to be used
only for VP mailboxes.
There is a tools that can perform extract of Exchange DB to one PST file per
mailbox. (Xmerge)
You can use this tools to backup some mailboxes. And then backup PST thru
TSM as flat file.

Re: Informix restore using TSM

2001-11-20 Thread George Lesho

Theresa, I do Informix restores all the time. You are correct about the old
ADSM product... it did supply a shared library. TSM does not. The shared
library is a generic library that onbar talks to to make its tape requests
known to TSM. TSM merely keeps track of where the backups are that are to
be restored and onbar does most of the work. Backups are done in several
ways, depending on the arguements to the onbar command. Backups done with a
-L specify a "level" and you can think of these as more or less incremental
backups. I say that because Informix logical logs, which are probably being
backed up to allow you to restore to a "point in time". This point in time
is specified in the onbar restore arguements (hope you have an Informix
Onbar Backup and Restore Guide. The other way you can back up your system
is using the whole_system argument in the backups. Then, you can do a
whole_system restore. I think these work a tad better but either method
will work. How do you backup the database? I would guess a script is used
which calls the onbar script that Informix provides along with arguments.

The Audit starts succesfully but this process won4t complete. The day after

still see this Audit Library process as active and this disrupts our other

The only way we can free the drives for the other schedules is to Cancel the

Since the Actlog doesn4t show errors on the Audit schedule we can4t figure

It's really wierd. If you display the attributes of the field withing
Crystal, it shows DATE/TIME stamp, but it just plain doesn't format it. If
you select to browse the field data, all you see it 1 entry of 0/0/0 00:00.
If you use just about any other tool to extract the same data from the same
ODBC connection, it will format just fine. I'm using Excel to get the
reports I need until I can get the time to get back with Seagate. Seeing as
how everything else but Crystal works, I'm not inclined to open a ticket
with IBM/Tivoli on this.

Check your duplex/speed settings *both* at the NIC and the switch ports.
Lock them according to your manufacturer's suggestions.

Greetings, SM'ers!

I have two NT 4.0 file servers that take anywhere from 8 hrs to 16 hrs to
process all files & complete the backup scheduled backup.

Processes: 400,000 files
Backing up: 10,000 to 40,000
Bytes transf: 6 GB
NO COMPRESSION

The server is an H80 7026 2 GB of memory with AIX 4.3.3 10/100 & 10/1000
Ethernet backing up straight to disk pool. Any suggestions from anyone with
similiar scheduled NT backup setup please respond!

Thanks,

Very interesting. I just installed TSM Server and Client version 4.1.2.0
and is
receiving RC=11 for some schedule events. No answer from support yet.

We installed the TSM Client version 4.2.1 on a test server. The backups run
fine every day (all files are incrementally backed up OK), and we can
restore files fine. But at the end of each backup there is a "ANS1512E"
error in the dsmsched.log file, and that error is returned to the TSM Server
which makes it appear as though the backup failed. The "ANS1512E" error has
a return code of 4. Does anyone know what is causing this error? Below is
a snippet from the dsmsched.log file showing the error (3rd line from the

Demetrius,

what are your TCPIP settings on both sides( client / server)
How did you set TNXBYTEMILIT and other tuning stuff ?

Have your heard of Journal Based Backup (feature of 4.2.x).

If your NT box is able to handle 2 or more data sessions ?
check the RESOURCEUTILIZATION param

You can increase you TCPBUFF and TCPWINDOWSIZE to the MAX.

Send us your params... (and what kind of CPU you have in your NT
box)

Reclamation frees up space on offsite tapes by rewriting the files left on
expired offsite tapes (referenced in the TSM database) to a read/write
volume onsite!

The benefit is the same as for primary pool reclamation - more effective
tape usage.
And if you look at the description copy pool reclamation works copying data
from primary pool which ought to be on-site.

What is the benefit of using reclamation on the offsite copy tape pool?
How is this possible if the tapes are offsite?
Expiration makes sense, but reclamation?

I think if you take into consideration all of the costs, TKG's BMR gives
a return on investment rather quickly. With this solution, after the
initial installation, there is nothing to do except run your incremental
backups the way you do now. All of the point solutions you have to
perform Bare Metal Restores are no longer needed. No more local tape
drives or monitoring the processes, no more administrators time tracking
the backups, dealing with the media, wondering if you remembered
everything. And we're not even talking about the time saved when you
actually have to use it for a Bare Metal Restore. It is automated in
both daily operations and during the restoration. That's where the
value comes in.

Weigh the entire solution: what it costs you before you implement BMR
and after. Most companies get back their investment within the first 6
months of use.

tsm vs. veritas

2001-11-20 Thread Rick Francis

can you confirm that veritas netbackup is similiar to tsm/adsm?

do both use the client/server model?

if tsm is installed on a aix server, does a client piece have to be
installed on a solaris server in order to be backed up? ditto for a
nextstep, nt/2000 and hp server???

thanks.

Re: tsm vs. veritas

2001-11-20 Thread Adolph Kahan

Not really similar, unless you mean that both have client/server.

You need TSM server installed on one machine and then clients on all the
others that you intend to backup.

TSM has many functions that makes it superior to Veritas Netbackup.

Re: Dumb Exchange question: Not Dumb, just a MS-requirement

2001-11-20 Thread Seay, Paul

YEP you do. And it gets worse with Active Directory. But, Tivoli is not
the folks that say mailbox recovery products are bad. Microsoft says so.
Until they provide the proper API, nothing will likely happen in TSM. The
interface that some vendors are using to do this requires that you backup
all the mailboxes and takes forever. So, if you have 1000s of mailboxes on
an Exchange server, it isn't going to happen. Some customers are using
these tools to backup executive's mailboxes.
