Re: NT Cluster & TSM

2002-05-25 Thread Joe Cascanette

The way I have set this up is to use the CLUSTER name in TSM for the shared storage,
and the two local computer names for the local drives.

nodename
Cluster - controls the F,G,H,I,J drives (CLUSTERNODE YES option)
Server1 - controls c and d drive (Domain C, Domain D...)
Server2 - controls c and d drive (Domain C, Domain D...)

I have 2 schedules on each node - one for local backps and one for cluster backups. I
created a group in the cluster admin to control backups service for the shared drives
and keep the local node backups to automatic

The only explanation is that server1 somehow is getting DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL.
Check carefully which dsm.opt is used when cluster instance goes to
server1 and are there any DOMAIN options in a optionset associated to that
node.
If domain all-local gets somehow into "local" node then is have two
current copies of shared files. But if cluster resources are backed up as
"server1" instead of "cluster" the only way to distinguish which version
is the current is checking the date or very-very carefully follow
failovers.

Subject:NT Cluster & TSM

Hello,
I'd like to ask a question about NT cluster with TSM..
I have got an NT Cluster and the backup is made with TSM. On the TSM
server
side I've got defined 2 server, each one for each real server: server1 and
server2. There are another two server defined for shared disks: disk1(disk
f:) and disk2 (disk g:).
There are four file spaces:
FileSpace Name Node Name
\\server1\c$server1
\\server2\c$server2
\\cluster\f$disk1
\\cluster\g$disk2
The DOMAIN option in the opt files are
Server1 DOMAIN C:
Server2 DOMAIN C:
disk1 DOMAIN F:
disk2 DOMAIN G:
From the backup point of view it works fine, the problem arises when the
shared disks are moved from one real server to the other.
In this situation the shared disks are considered as local disks for the
real servers and a full backup of those disks are made, and the file
spaces
are as follows
FileSpace Name Node Name
\\server1\c$server1
\\server1\f$server1
\\server1\g$server1
\\server2\c$server2
\\cluster\f$disk1
\\cluster\g$disk2

The creation of the two new file spaces is normal? Is this situation ok?

Another problem arises when there is a need of restoring a file: where is
the backup of one file residing in disk f:? in \\server1\f$ or in
\\cluster\f$ or in both? Which one is the most recent? and other than the
last one?

Can anyone help me in clarifing those questions?

Re: Using Backupsets for Disaster Recovery

2002-05-01 Thread Joe Cascanette

I have 6 key servers that I create backupsets for (Tuesday and Thursday). Depending on
your media (mine is DLT 40/80) and your DR site hardware (availability of drives to
use), I would suggest the more servers you can put on a backupset the better. These
sets are great to have running while you build your TSM server and restore your DB. I
mostly use them for NT4 systems, but will be working more with them and Win2000
servers. NT4 was easy to do a bare metal compared to WIN2000.

I ran into a few hung sessions while creating some backupsets with my web servers
(alot of small files). I ran a selective backup on those troubled nodes and this
seemed to fix this.

server is 4.2.1.12 on Win2000AS

Does anyone use Backupsets of NT/W2K machines for Disaster Recovery
purposes?

We are currently running TSM v4.1.5.3, on OS/390 v2.8. Most of our NT/W2K
clients are running v.4.2 of the Backup/Archive client. Currently we
backup approximately 150 client nodes, and generate backupsets for 28 of
those. The backupsets are not created daily, but approximately 2 per week
for each node. It does cause some problems with the server. The server
seems to "hang" during certain backupsets (mostly large nodes).

They are requesting additional backusets, and some daily. I fear this will
only cause additional problems with the server. They do rely on the
backupsets for Disaster Recovery, but I would like to get them away from
that.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

restoring files

2002-04-15 Thread Joe Cascanette

we had a virus sweep through a few servers. The problem is that when the virus scanner
picked up the infected files (mostly .exe's) they were deleted instead of cleaned.
Since out standard policy is set to 7 copies it looks like I will have to manually
look through the list and select the latest inactive file to restore. (cant do a point
in time because only .exe file were effected??)

I suspect we mean the same thing, I just don't write in my native tongue
very well --

Multiple client options sets where you define exclusions for specific
things:
One set with inclexcl for WINNT4 clients, a set with inclexcl for Oracle,
one for MSSQL and if you had a WNNT server with Oracle, you just specify the
WINNT and the Oracle for the client.

I'm one of those sorts that likes to keep administration as simple as
possible - only one place to look at the lists rather than 1500 dsm.opt
files as we do at this location now.

Just my thoughts with the wish that IBM/Tivoli is listening ;)

TSMers,

I am having a problem with an NT4 sp6 client running TSM 4.1.3 client
software. The dsm.opt file entries are as follows:

TCPSERVERADDRESS x
PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE
NODENAME xxx
RESOURCEUTILIZATION 6
ERRORLOGRETENTION 7
SCHEDLOGRETENTION 7
COMPRESSION YES
BACKUPREGISTRY YES
DOMAIN C: F:
Exclude.Dir F:\MSSQL7\Data

By using DOMAIN C: F:, only these 2 local drives should get backed up,
correct? When I open the TSM GUI and click edit>preferences>backup the
"Backup all local file systems" is unchecked and it appears that only C: and
F: will be backed up. But that is not the case. Here is an entry from the
dsmsched.log:

Incremental backup of volume '\\x\C$'
04/04/2002 00:09:13 Incremental backup of volume '\\x\F$'
04/04/2002 00:09:13 Incremental backup of volume '\\x\D$'
04/04/2002 00:09:13 Incremental backup of volume '\\x\E$'
04/04/2002 00:09:13 Incremental backup of volume '\\x\G$'
04/04/2002 00:09:13 Incremental backup of volume '\\x\H$'

All of the local drives get backed up. Has anyone else experienced probelms
with only using the DOMAIN phrase in the dsm.opt file instead of exclude
statements?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not to my knowledge. Of course you didn't mention your specifics.
Model of Tape Library, TSM version, TSM server platform.

If on AIX platform with IBM Libraries, the "tapeutil" can inventory
all slots in library including Robot slots and give you this info.
You can work with it and put together a script that wil give you this
info in the format you want.

Re: Backing up NT server with print queues

2002-03-19 Thread Joe Cascanette

You need to have bascially 3 installs on a cluster. One for each LOCAL node (to get
local drives and system objects - registry) and one for the cluster name
(clusternode=yes in dsm.opt file)

xyz Cluster - dsm.opt - located on both nodes (depends which one is active) and it has
clusternode=yes in dsm.opt file.

node 1 and 2 - dsmlocal.opt - no metion of cluster, therefore will backup all local
drives and registry

Create 2 backup schedules - one for dsmlocal.opt (local backups) which are set to
automatic start.
  - one for dsm.opt (cluster name) which will
be set to manual start

In cluster Admin, create a group for the dsm.opt service (ex; TSM Backup Schedule for
Cluster) and set all nodes to be able to start it. (Make sure you create a seperate
group in the Cluster Admin!!! - so if something goes wrong just with the Tivoli
services it will not fail over the whole machine)

So what you will see on the TSM server is:

Node1
Node2
Cluster name for node1 and node2
(3 schedules for 2 boxes)

If you have any more questions email me.

Hi

If this is a Microsoft Cluster, you should have some kind of cluster group.
However, it doesn't have to contain any disk resources. Disk resources are not
necessary to use TSM cluster services. All you have to have is a MS cluster group. The
client shouldn't be running at both cluster nodes at the same time, as this will
endanger the possibility of restoring the cluster.

Just install TSM client software on both nodes, add the necessary
resources(See Using TSM in a clustered Windows environment), which should be attached
to the correct cluster group

Well, the admin ref manual says you can do it with: ENABLE EVENTS
NTEVENTLOG ANR1596

(note you leave the I off ANR1596I).

I've never done ENABLE with the EVENTLOG, just with SNMP (and on AIX, at
that). So I don't know if there is stuff you have to do in Windows.
ANyway, check out the commands ENABLE EVENTS, BEGIN EVENTLOGGING and END
EVENTLOGGING in the Admin ref, that's where you start.

Yep, got it working. I created all the macros as scripts. And just defined a schedule
type=admin CMD='run databasecheck', this works fine.

I am still working on error checking and testing, but here are my simple scripts that
provide a bit of automation. Since my backup size varies nightly, I needed to create a

By "fully-qualify", I mean to spell out the full path to the macro. That
is, don't just use

   database

as there is no implicit extension that I am aware of. You need to specify
the .mac extension as well as the path to the file. For example:

   C:\TSM\server1\database.mac

or

   C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\server1\database.mac

Another "fly in the ointment": you can not schedule the MACRO command (I
had forgotten this, but just verified that it still holds true).

Here is what I think would work for you:

Make sure your database.mac file is on the TSM server machine (as opposed
to the client machine).

Run the following admin command:

   define script database "C:\Program
Files\Tivoli\TSM\server1\database.mac"

Note: "database" is the name of the script, and can be whatever you want.

Note: Specify the fully-qualified/fully-spelled out file name. Put in
double double quotes if the file name contains blank spaces.

Now create an Admin schedule to issue the command:

   run database

An update to my last response: I think the real problem is that you are
trying to launch a server macro from a client schedule (I didn't catch
that the first time around).

How about defining an admin schedule whose CMD parameter is configured to
run the "macro database.mac" command? You'll need to fully-qualify the
macro name, and the macro will have to exist on the server machine.

Has anyone experienced greater backup throughput by setting the

When you increase the resourceutilization on a client, are there any server

TSM Environment information:
AIX SERVER - 4.2.1.9
AIX CLIENTS - 4.1.3
NT CLIENTS - 4.1.2.12

I have set the resourceutilization to 5 in my dsm.opt file on one of our

Joe,

Are you seeing the Agent make communications to the Server when recycled ?
Is the Server receiving the mount request from the Agent ?

Any changes to the device configurations on the server that effect the Agent
(other server) need to recycle agent.

If you want to send portion of activity log and oter messages, we can take a
look see. Are the device names on the Client the same as the Server ?

What levels of TSM?

Performance note :
If the client supports SHAREDMEM / NANEPIPES these in my testing have
provided the best performance especialy where the client and Agent talk
there is no TCP/IP overhead.

Biggest Advantage I see todate is that all that big I/O ( Data Bases ) are
removed from the LAN traffic and other tentents act better who need LAN.
The other big difference is that during a LAN backup the client is somewhat
working hard ( 35% - 40% or more ) moving data using IP stacks.

Performed testing where I had four drives writing to 3590 @ native speeds +
during a DB2 run where the engine was 79% idle during the run. This is the
biggest advantage to date for LAN-Free. Predicting performance over the SAN
is another animal for another day.

My two cents.

it does not give me a "LANFree path failed. Using LAN Path" anymore. I have
mapped all the drives to this server to use.

Is there something missing?. When the backups start no tape is loaded, it
goes to the storage pool (unless it is over 500Megs which goes directly to
tape). This is also causing a problem when I try to restore to the original
location for this SAN attached server - File is unavailable to the server.
So I need to launch the client (login as this node) on another machine and
save the files to a different location.

TSM server is connected to the library via fibre switch. All nodes for LAN
free backups are connected to this fibre switch and are able to see all the
drives in the TSM admin GUI. The service "TSM StorageAgent1" is created and
is running.

 - Keep checking this process. After this is complete ( or have been running for a x

onsite offsite). Keep checking for this to complete.
 - When done launch the full database backup.
 - After this is done then checkout the volume to go offsite (move media * stg=offsite
wherestate=mountableinlib wherestatus=full,filling checkl=no access=readw remove=bulk)
but I want to make sure that the tapes marked filling in the offsite pool are over 50%
used, if not I want to keep this tape back to do offsite reclamation with)
 - Start the offsite reclamation (update stg offsite recl=45)

setup. I see the node in question connecting to the TSM Server (under q ses
I can see the node and its session type is server). When I launch the client
it does not give me a "LANFree path failed.

That would be the net effect for files that were sent to this special disk
storage pool. Only inactive versions would be on the next storage pools.

However tape backup storage pools would still have both active/inactive
versions on the tapes. So it is not like your active versions would only be
on disk storage.

Thought I would throw an idea I had for a TSM feature out on the listserv
and get some thoughts no whether this would be useful or not.

The feature that I would like to see is the ability to create a special disk
storage pool, that would only migrate inactive versions of backup objects to
the next storage pool. This would keep all the active versions on disk
storage.

I'm sure everyone has certain nodes(systems) that are of more importance
than others. Could be the CEO's desktop filesystem or a critical server.

Advantages:
Fast restore of active versions.
No tape mounts required for restore of active versions.
Fast creation of backupsets.
No tape mounts required for generating Backupsets (Instant Archives)

Disadvantages:
Higher hardware cost for additional disk storage.

Any thoughts on the matter?

I despredly need the 4.2 CD for windows. I have on the other hand access to

My Question

Is there a way for me to install 4.2 without the CD. if i copy the .lic
files to the other server and some other files i would neeed. and then
install the 4.2.1.X server.

Is this posible?

Thanks in advance :)

Hello all,
I have some Domino people trying to set up the TDP on their servers so we
can back them up. They seem to be having some trouble getting things to work
automated. They can connect via the GUI and back things up. Since I have
never seen/used it I don't have much knowledge of the product so here are a
few questions.

Does anyone running this have a "best practices" setup?

What do you back up daily?

What do you back up weekly?

How is the TSM server set up to expire old data? Or is it done via the
client?

Do you have any options files I can take a look at?

They are trying to run things in a command file, do you have any sample
files for each of the types of backups you do? I'd like to compare to what
they put together. It seems to be the only thing they have so far and it
looks like it's only backing up archive logs.

Here is what they have:
set dom_dir="c:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\domino"
cd /d %dom_dir%
echo Current date is:>>domarc.log
date /t >e:\logs\domarc.log
echo Current time is:>>domarc.log
time /t >e:\logs\domarc.log
start /B domdsmc archivelog
/adsmoptfile=c:\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\domino\dsm.opt
/logfile=e:\logs\domasch.log >>e:\logs\domarc.log

They are running TDP on Windows 2000. I have an AIX 4.3.3 TSM 4.2.1.8 server
with the latest baclient and TDP for the Windows Client side.

Could you describe your layout abit:

ie:
- TSM Server connected to the SAN via Fibre and TCP/IP connection to LAN
- 3494 library connected directly to the SAN via Fibre (or connected via SCSI to TSM
Server)
- NT4 Server(s) connected to SAN via Fibre and TCP/IP connection to LAN

On the Win4 server can you see the SAN attached drives and access them?
Can the current (LAN path) client access the TSM server (manual backup from desktop)
and can the TSM GUI see all the SAN drives (mappings - should be the same when viewing
mappings through explorer)

Keep Mount Point

Select whether the node should retain the tape mount point for the entire session.

Yes Specifies that the node must retain the tape mount point during the entire
session.

No Specifies that the node will release the tape mount point if policy
definitions cause data
to be stored in a disk storage pool after storing data in a sequential
storage pool. The
 default is No.

Maximum Mount Points Allowed

Enter a number from 0 to 999 to specify the maximum allowed resource usage by this
node. A value of
0 specifies that tape drives cannot be acquired for storage operations. Data storage
operations must
be contained within a disk storage pool and server operations like migration will
manage putting
data on tape. A value of 0 does not prevent a retrieve operation from acquiring a tape
drive. A node
is always allowed to acquire at least 1 tape mount point for the purpose of data
retrieval. Entering
a value other than 0, limits the node to the specified number of tape drives and
prevents the node
from monopolizing all of the available tape drives. This parameter is optional

Hi

Can anyone explain to me very slowly what the parameters: MAXNUMMP and
KEEPMP means when I define a new NODE.
The default is for MAXNUMMP 1 and for KEEPMP no

I backup first to disk and during the day migrate to tape, just my database
(Sap, Exchange ?) I backup directly to tape.
Did those parameters can affect performance ?.. I made a little test trying
to backup a same node (large client novell 5) once to disk and once to tape.
I got a very big difference on performance , to tape took a very long time.

Any suggestions will be appreciate.

Re: Backing up MS-SQL without the TDP

2002-02-08 Thread Joe Cascanette

You can schedule SQL to create backups of your databases to a directory before TSM
starts it backup (TSM can pick up the backup files). You can then restore the
databases into a fresh copy of SQL if needed. Check the Microsoft site for procedures
for this (restore from backup). This worked fine (abit longer to restore) in your DR
testing.

We dont use TDP for SQL, again $$$ is a factor...

When you register the test box to TSM you can give whatever name you like
ie testbox
For recovery purposes, what you can do is change the nodename in the dsm.opt
file on your test
machine from "testbox" to the same name as the machine you are recovering from.
Then you will be able to recover to the testbox.
You will not be able to do any backups/restores on your production server while
your test in in progress.

Not sure if you need a MDR or not, depends if you have direct fibre attachment to the

Re: Win 2000 devices

2001-12-21 Thread Joe Cascanette

I spent many days trying to get Windows Removable storage working with TSM, but the
command functions are not the same when using the TSM drivers.

What I needed to do is disable the Removable storage service, install the TSM Device
drivers.

You may also need to adjust your scsi id for the robot arm to something other than 0
(zero). I had to actually put the robot arm on its own scsi (but I was connecting to a
SAN, and using a fibre Data Router) and terminate the drives separately.

My setup is TSM 4.2.1.6 with a Compaq DLT library connected directly to a SAN via
fibre and a Data Router.

Folks, I am a Unix admin / storage admin but I have recently been given the
task of administering a remote TSM server. The O/S for this box is Win 2000
with SP2. Our remote server is at TSM 4.1.5.

Our local NT admin and the remote NT admin (at the boxes location) spent
most of the afternoon yesterday fumbling with a Tivoli support person who
was unlucky enough to receive our trouble call. It seems there are a bunch
of ways it might be possible to install scsi, tape and library drivers with
multiple versions of some of these drivers on the install CD and other
versions available from the IBM ftp site. The Tivoli support person who
responded to the call knew less than our guys and all are now totally
confused as to what/how to install the drivers. We now have all devices
showing up in the O/S but they have yellow circles with exclamation marks
for the library and drives. We have a Magstar 3575L24 with four 3570C
drives.
Are there install instructions out there that provide the necessary detail
to to this right? If you have this or a similar set up,
can you provide any tips on which Microsoft drivers vs which TSM drivers to
use and which drivers you actually ARE using? Also provide the hardware
microcode level used with your set up. I really need to get this set up and
with the holidays looming, TSM support will probably not get better ;-)

I am in the process of testing this procedure using TSM on different

There is a redpiece on W2K restores (SG24-6141-00) that is pretty good

is for situations when you restore back to the same hardware.

I am testing DR situations where we would have to restore W2K servers to

Re: Backupset Restore

2001-12-20 Thread Joe Cascanette

I have no problem using the Gui for full backupset restores. Is
windows2000 picking up the drive as tape1? Remote Storage in win2000
always starts with Tape0.

As for the command prompts below you only need the backupset name if you
are attached to the TSM Server and doing the restore. #4 is the one I
tried (using single quotes) and the tape drive is accessed and accessed
with no restore (but I only left it for 20 minutes - maybe a longer time
is req'd).

I would suggest tying the gui again, maybe check remote storage to see
if something is wrong there. Possible driver problem?? Window's drivers
are not always usable.

I am having the same problem of restoring from a backupset with a tape

attached to a client. I was told by support that GUI won't support using
a
local tape drive to restore from a backupset. Command line should work.
But
not for me. These are what I have tried:
1) restore backupset \\.\Tape1 backupset_name -loc=tape
2) restore backupset \\.\Tape1\ backupset_name -loc=tape
3) restore backupset \\.\Tape1 \\nodename\c$\file_name -loc=tape
4) restore backupset \\.\Tape1 "\\nodename\c$\file_name" -loc=tape
5) restore backupset \\.\Tape1\ \\nodename\c$\file_name -loc=tape
6) restore backupset \\.\Tape1\ "\\nodename\c$\file_name" -loc=tape
7) restore backupset \\.\Tape1 \\nodename\c$\* -loc=tape
8) restore backupset \\.\Tape1 "\\nodename\c$\*" -loc=tape
9) restore backupset \\.\Tape1\ \\nodename\c$\* -loc=tape
10) restore backupset \\.\Tape1\ "\\nodename\c$\*" -loc=tape

I can actually see that the light on the tape drive is blinking,
indicating
some activity. But After a few minitues, I would get "ANS1933E, Error
accessing file or device ''."

My client is 4.1 on a win2000 machine and server is 4.1.3 on AIX4.3.3. I
am

are
supported tape device (not LTO).

any idea?

My understanding of restoration from backupsets is that you cannot use
wildcards to restore anything. You either have to restore specfic
files (using a full directory tree), or you can restore the entire
backupset's load, but nothing inbetween.

Ok, this is to everyone still having trouble with the backupset
delete/expire problems.

This is information form Tivoli tech support, so don't shoot the
messenger.

It is true that this was a bug in TSM 4.1.2, it seems that if you
created a
backupset and it passed its expiration date, the volume that the set was
on
could not or would not be able to be reclaimed as scratch. An addition
of
the delete volhist type=backupset command was added but undocumented in
4.1.3, and the fix was implemented in 4.2 to remedy the problem.

The problem I was having was the undocumented feature of delete volhist
was
returning an unknown volume error when I tried to run it.

The solution was as follow from Tivoli tech support:

delete volhist type=backupset todate=(the day after the backupset was
created) totime=(the same time) volume=(volumename in all CAPS)
force=yes

The key was the all caps in volume=, (the volume parameter is case
sensitive) I omitted the totime and was still successful.

Hope this helps.

I am new to this group and to Tivoli, but I successfully used this
command
yesterday.

dsmc restore backupset backupsetname \\machinename\c$}\*

I did not have to tell it which tape the set was on, just give it the
correct name, this is not the node name but the backupset name which
usually
the nodename.somegeneratednumber then the individual file to restore.
This
worked on 4.1.2.

I still have plenty of questions myself.

Once I had my backup set, I was able to delete the filespace (but retain
the
node) which frees up space in my diskpool, correct? Once the file space
was
deleted I was still able to go back to my backupset for a restore. Is
this
the practiced method for retiring a client so we can keep a "snap shot"
of a
retired client for an agreed amount of time?

Once the backupset is complete and I have identified the volume, what is
the
preferred checkout command? Once a backupset has expired, how do I reuse
the
volume it was on?

Hope this helps and hope to hear back from you soon.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: TSM win2k cluster install

2001-12-19 Thread Joe Cascanette

What I have done is installed TSM Client on both nodes on their local
drives. I then created 2 dsm.opt files (one called dsm.opt and the other
dsmlocal.opt). The dsm.opt file contained clusternode=yes, which you
will only see the shared drives. The dsmlocal.opt does not have the
clustermode option in it.

In Cluster admin I created a separate group called TSM Backups and put
in there the TSM Scheduler, Client, and Journal services (make sure you
have these services set to manual start - Cluster admin will control the
start/stop of these services). This will allow Windows to start/stop the
services for TSM depending on what node is active.

I then created a 2nd schedule on each node (2nd service) using the
DSMLOCAL.OPT file. I called this "TSM Backup for local node" (service
name). This service will also be installed on each node in the cluster
and will be set to automatically and will NOT be in the cluster admin
group of TSM. This will backup the local drives and the System.objects
of each node.

If you need more detail let me know and I will send screen shots and
more info to your email.

Hi all,

I have a a question concerning performance on a W2K-Client.

On our W2K-fileserver (2 processors, 80 files, w2k-compression on)
we
get a very poor performance with our backup (Vers. 4.2.0.0). With the
performance monitor there seems not to be an problem with memory or CPU
The bad time results from the scanning of the filesystem. In
dsmsched.log
you can see, that the system scans about 1000 to 1500 files per minute,
what
is compared to other systems very poor.
I am not an expert in w2k so my question : is this normal for a
w2k-system
with that many files. Because there are sometimes a lot of rights
belonging
to one file, maybe there is a lot to compare with the filelist from the
TSM-server ??
I saw in the XP-Client-Version an Problem fixed with IC31706, that
reports
of a performance problem in XP (what is the same TSM-Client), but this
fix
is not available for w2k.

Has anybody an idea where the problem comes from and how it can be fixed
?

Thanks a lot

Chris

their software popular and useful. If they don't want to produce

I don't think that bundling more than one server on 1 tape will present
a problem. You have to load the client to view the backup sets anyways,
so there is some organization in place to find the data in the first
place. Of course if I could fill a 80gig tape all the time I would be
happy, my employer will be happy, and I would not be asking for change
with an option within TSM.

If you don't want use the change, that's fine, don't use the extended
features. But I for one would like to cut the number of tape I handle
everyday. The less tapes I use a day the less chance corruption will set
in.

Have you ever preformed a actual disaster recovery before?.

One of the major purposes of backupsets is the ability to restore a
system without the use of the TSM server. This can particularly useful
in DR mode when you need to get some mission-critical TSM clients
*immediately* while you're concurrently getting the TSM box rebuilt as
well. In this mode, an LTO tape with a backupset on it won't do you
much good if you can't locally mount the tape on the box to be
recovered, and I don't know many folk that have a standalone LTO tape
drive sitting around.

The other problem is that of organization. If you put, say, three TSM
clients' worth of backupsets on one tape, and you use the server-free
mode when restoring, how will client #2 know how to distinguish its
data from client #1's?

If you've got a beef with using large-capacity tapes for backupsets,
stick a standalone DLT or 8mm tape drive on your TSM server, and write
the backupsets to that. Then move the drive to the client to be
restored as necessary.

>If enough people submit this requirement to Tivoli perhaps they will
listen.

Why make backupsets more complex? Leave the backupset design alone, I
say.

Re: How many concurrent backup sets?

Depending on your server setup there will be a fight for tapes. Turning
collocation ON for your onsite pools would greatly increase the time to
create backup sets. I have 4 backup sets running every 2nd day at once
(I have 10 drives which leaves 2 drive available to do restores.) I have
also noticed that you are unable to perform storage pool backups during

My over all goal (when Tivoli fixes the backup set option and adds the

in place of monthly archives.

If your users want to be able to restore *EVERY* version created during
the
month you need VERExists=NOLimit and VERDeleted=NOLimit. And with
backupset
generation on the first day (or night ;-) of a month you can keep
RETExtra=31 (hey friends, some months are longer `-) and RETOnly=31 (or
more). And just the backupset retension to be 366 days (remember Y2k
`-).
But the backupsets are treated as single object in TSM DB and do not
occupy
too much.

Backupsets occupy separate volumes and do not mess with other
backups/archives for this and other nodes. So backupsets generation will
improve restore time of other nodes (slightly) and this node (much, much
more).

And creation of archives is done with all archived data traversing the
net
again !

Subject:Large TSM database due to no. of files and versions

Dear all,

We have the following problem:

We are backing up some large Novell servers (more than 1 million files
per
Server). The users want to be able to restore every version of a file 30
days back and every version of a file at the end of a month 12 months
back.
In order to meet these requirements at least partly we set the backup
management class as follows:

Versions Data Exists: 10
Versions Data Deleted: 5
Retain Extra Versions: 366
Retain Only Version: 366

Because of these settings, the TSM database grew to 15 GB in the last 6
months and is growing fast even further. Restore performance is bad for
these servers as well.

Is there a possibility / idea to get over this apart from using
archives?
Is
it possible to create archives (not backupsets) from existing data on
the
TSM server?

Any idea is welcome!

I have a few web servers with well over 500,000 small files. During a

out the use of backup sets for recovery purposes (so I don't need to
build the TSM server first - there are a few servers I could start to

The other option was to add more drives to these servers, and execute a

Say you have a file system with only 10 GB but it has a million files in

perform an image backup of the logical volume on which the file system

Re: Backupset

2001-11-27 Thread Joe Cascanette

Yep..and Yep...

I perform a Backup Set on 5 servers at once daily (I have 10 drives
thought). These are the servers I need to get up first in case of a
disaster. Of course the creation of Backup Sets for a node uses the
onsite copy tapes. So if the tape being read from has information for
the other backup set then it will wait until the tape is available. As
for the what tape to write to, you indicate that in the command options.
Be aware that if the node you are creating a backup set for is located
on several tapes (in the onsite copy set) then it will take a while.

So for the best way to achieve this is to turn on collocation for your
onsite copy tapes. This is what I have (alot of space in my library).
This will insure that speed is at max, and that the different backup
sets are not fighting for the data tape.

Im still experimenting with backup sets, so I am still in learning mode
about them.

Hope this helps.

Hi Joe,

The paper that Andy wrote is a great resource, but it was written for
ADSM
3.1, so the list of tables is out of date.
Use the paper as a reference for "how to", but to see what tables are
available for your own version do this:

select * from syscat.tables

At my level (4.1.3) there is indeed at BACKUPSETS table.

So then you can do this:

select * from syscat.columns where TABNAME='BACKUPSETS'

That gives you the same info that was in Andy's paper, but for your own
server version
.
One day when I have some free time (oh yeah, like really...) I'm gonna
work
at creating an SQL script that will pull the stuff out in a "nice"
format
like Andy's.

BTW, I think you will need a select that does a join with VOLHISTORY
table
somehow, to get the volume name you want matched with the NODE_NAME.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Subject: Backup Sets

Is a select command that will allow me to search the nodes and find out
what backup sets they have and what volume they reside on?

I am playing around with doing a backup set for my key servers on a
daily basis for disaster purposes. These tapes are send offsite daily. I
need to be able to view what servers backup sets reside on which tape.

I was just going to do a search in the activity log for them, but a
select statement would be great to use. I looked through the ADSTAR
paper that Andrew Raibeck wrote with the tables, but never came across
anything of use.. any thoughts??

Another problem is when I load the client to access the backup set I am
unable to drill down the trees. I am opening a call with Tivoli about
this.

If the databases are large, you can set a value in the pool to say
anything over 500megs is size (or any size) to go directly to tape.

Hi tsmers,
can any one suggest me how to backup up data directly to tape pool.
instead
going through tradiitional setup of backing up to disk first and then
migrating to tape pool.

im using 3575 tape pool with 6 drives . i need to backup around 80gb of
db2
database using 4 sessoins. when i created a management class and copy
group
specifying copy destination as 3575_bkup (which is tape pool) and node
mount points to 4 (which uses 4 tapes to be mounted for 4 sessions
opened).
But it ran for few MB and terminated.

i dont understand why is not happening ? can anybody help me to findout
a
way to backup directly to tape instead of backing up fist to disk and
then
migrating it to tapepool.

help in this regard is highly appriciated.

So far so good.

Nope...just the active files, or at least that's all it does currently.

No way to do that that I'm aware of.

The only other thing I'd add is that there a lot of posts regarding
problem restoring from backupsets earlier this year on the list. As I
recall, the command line syntax is pretty arcane. I haven't tried it
myself. I have a couple of customers experimenting with it, but no
production environments yet.

Test carefully!

Archives vrs Backup Sets

2001-11-22 Thread Joe Cascanette

Has anyone been using backup sets?. I have been looking into using
backup sets on a monthly bases instead of archives. I am using DLT 40/80
gig drives/tapes (10 of them). TSM 4.2.1.6 on Windows 2000, and 4.2.0
clients on about 98% of the machines.

>From what I am reading I am able to perform this operation at the TSM
server and it directs the output to scratch tapes. The GREAT thing about
this is it does NOT touch the serves to retransmit all the data to the
archive storage pool, and then to tape (which is alot of traffic!). The
Backups sets would use more tapes (kind of like collocation turned on
right?!). So after the daily incremental running at night, I will be
able to create the backup sets ( for a monthly archive) using the
current data just backed up from that node. (right?!)

One question is when doing a backup set, does it also save all the
inactive files? or just the active ones?

Is there a way to direct all the backup sets to another copy pool to
utilize tape consumption and to keep the tapes separate from the other
copypools for easier search? (just a thought - but this would be a lot
of extra work.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Dumb Exchange question

2001-11-21 Thread Joe Cascanette

If you are referring to Exchange 5.5, then no. You still have to create
a new server and dump the information store to it.

If you are referring to Exchange 2000, then no... You need to set the
retentions in Exchange 2000 to give you individual mail support
(deletion) and mailbox deletion. Heads up if you are using Active
Directory. Exchange 5.5 still touches the AD, and if the profile is
damaged there then so is the mail.. Must be a Microsoft thing. Modify
one area, and something unrelated it broken.

We will be upgrading to the new TDP for Exchange 2.2 from
version
1.1 some time after the first of the year and we are wondering if the
newer
version supports individual mailbox recovery. I know the 1.1 version
didn't
easily support mailbox recovery, you had to build a new Exchange box,
dump
an entire database restore to it and then export the mailbox back to the
production system.
Do will still need to jump through all the same hoops again to
restore a mailbox in version 2.2??

Using TSM Drivers

2001-11-13 Thread Joe Cascanette

I am having a problem with defining a library in TSM v4.2.1.6 (windows
2000). I have started fresh with a new install of Windows 2000 Adv
Server, have disables Removable storage, and after that have connected
the library via a SCSI cable. TSM is able to see the devices in the
device config, but hangs with trying to get information from the
library. It is in question that the compaq library 9326DX is a supported
device, however on the tivoli site they indicated that 9326 is supported
(however this library only exists in a D and DX format). Both libraries
are the same - DLT compaq 8000 drives, just one holds more tapes.

Before my reinstall of the OS, I was able to control the library with
the software & utils that came with it. As well I was able to operate
the library in RSM mode, create new pools etc, move tapes in and out,
access the drives..etc

Has anyone had any dealings with this library??.. or in fact needed to
disable any of the devices to let TSM take control of the library?. TSM
devices are in boot mode with 2000 opt support.

Any thoughs would be greatly appreciated..

Installing new DLT drive on Windows2000 system

2001-11-10 Thread Joe Cascanette

I have attached a new DLT library on a Windows 2000 system. Windows picks up
the library and the drives. I start the TSM Device services (server 4.2.1.6)
on boot and it does see the library and the drives, however after I drag
them in the wizard and hit finished it times out trying to talk to the
server/tape unit. I have tried removable storage service on and off with the
same outcome. With the TSM device drivers off I am able to connect to the
library with the gui that was provided with the unit. Is there some updated
drivers from Tivoli that I should be using, or should I scrap the use of the
TSM drivers and manually setup the library with Windows 2000 Removable
Storage?. There are some known bugs with the Windows 2000 Storage service. I
do have a connection to a SAN, however the SAN is not setup for disk to tape
yet.

I have been following the

Microsoft but not helping.

THREE PART QUESTION for "select gurus" ;-)

1. Can someone tell me what the timespan for this summary is based on the:
start_time>timestamp(current date - 1 day,'18:00:00')

Does this mean for the last 18 hours?

2. Also, is there a way to sum the various sessions for a single node? Some
of my servers, which have Informix databases, back up logical logs all day
long and there are dozens of entries per server such as:

AFCTEST10252976
AFCTEST10252976
AFCTEST10252976
AFCTEST10252976
AFCTEST10252976
AFCTEST10252976

(((plus a zillion more of these entries)))

3. and is there a way to place BACKUPS and ARCHIVES into this select
statement and have
separate columns for both backups and archives associated with a node on a
row? Such as:

NODE_NAME BYTES_XFRD(BACKUP) BYTES_XFRD(ARCHIVE)

AFCPROD1 1234567890 1234567890

Just click the box next to SYSTEM OBJECT and then RESTORE. (There "restore

multiple session to the server (10 sessions max - remember to adjust your
max sessions allowed at the server if you plan to use this)

Subject: Multiple Archive Session

Hello *Smers,

Big question here. Can you have multiple archive sessions running from
the same client? My current environment is as follows:

TSM 4.1.2.0
AIX 4.3.3
Magstar 3570 - 2 drives.

We are looking into cutting our archive window down, but I have been unable
to get both drives work simultaneously. I looked through the archive and
saw a response stating that you can't run multiple sessions from the same
client. Is this a true statement? If not any ideas on what to look for to
get it to work properly.

Thanks in advance,
