We have some archives that are missing. I am having difficulties
understanding how they could be gone from TSM.

The client is Red Hat Linux, TSM client version 5.5 server is TSM 6.2.

I know that the archive had an expiration date of 2017, so they should
not have expired. Management class archive retention is set to 2555
days.

I remember having to destroy some volumes because of tape read/write
errors. Is it possible I could have destroyed the only volume that had
this archive then TSM removed any reference to that archive?

The only way I know to check for these archives is either on the client
through the GUI, or on the server with a q occupancy command.

Assuming the archive was destroyed along with a volume, shouldn't there
be a reference to the archive in the database somewhere?

Maybe I should be asking how to find out what filespaces are on a volume
so I know if I can destroy it or not. Does anyone have a query for
finding the filespaces on a volume?

And thanks in advance for taking the time to think about this.

Re: Ang: Re: Linux backup won't run

2010-11-10 Thread Timothy Hughes

Thanks David reply,

yes, I can ping the client from the TSM server, The stanza for the
TCPServeraddress dsm.sys is a hostname ie company.ncc.oa.cc and the
TcpClientAddress is a IP address (numeric)

yes I have tried using IP addresses instead of DNS hostnames didn't
change results. Haven't tried the traceroute from client to server and
vice versa.

We think??? We may have found the problem (we will see if tonights
backup will work)

Even though SELINUX was disabled, iptables were being loaded.

Again, There was a another Linux server set up for backup at the same
time with exactly same type of dsm.opt, dsm.sys and client level and
there is no problem with that

Thanks again

Sorry for my intrusion in the discussion ;)

I'm trying to figure out why the TSM server would be located on the outside of the
firewall while the client is on the inside? Usually, the server is located on the
inside, and can therefore contact the client, while the client is located on the
outside (or in a DMZ) and cant contact the server due to ports not being open from
untrust/dmz trust.

I might be entirely wrong here, but this looks more like a DNS issue. Can you
ping the client from the TSM server? You can obviously not do a DNS lookup of
the TSM server from the client.

The stanza for TCPServeraddress in your opt-file, is that an IP adress or a
hostname? (it just says .XXX.XXX.XXX as far as I can see below). And what
about TcpClientAddress?

Have you tried using IP adresses instead of DNS hostnames? And if so, have you
tried doing a traceroute from client to server and vice versa?

If i'm not entirely mistaken, a scheduled backup (when using prompt) is still
initiated (from a TCP perspective) from the client. That means a) Server
contacts client to start backup b) Client initiates backup. If the client cant
resolve the server, you will get missed, or if the server cant resolve the
client, you'd get the error below.

Re: Linux backup won't run

2010-11-09 Thread Timothy Hughes

Thomas Thanks,

We can eliminate the second issue below, thats my fault I actually
posted the dsm.sys file (not the dsm.opt) sorry

The second possible issue is that many of the lines you describe
as being in dsm.opt are supposed to be in dsm.sys under Linux or
Unix.

I will look into the other two potential problem areas

Thanks
Tim

Three potential problem areas occur to me.

The first is an incorrect DNS configuration, suggested by the
'unknown host' messages from ping. If ping cannot convert the
DNS name of the server to a numeric address, the TSM client might
not be able to either.

The second possible issue is that many of the lines you describe
as being in dsm.opt are supposed to be in dsm.sys under Linux or
Unix.

The third possible problem is the 'tcpclientaddress' line. If the
address specified is incorrect, the TSM server may be sending
prompts to an unused address or to a NIC on a different system.
Is there a particular reason this statement is needed? I don't
think we have found it necessary for any of our TSM clients.

Thanks, we used prompted for all our backups but I may have to try this
if necessary.

of backups using the old name

Another approach to this is to use the same node registration (rename it
if you want, and reset the node password as necessary), but rename the
filespaces (e.g. / - /old, /usr - /old/usr, etc.). You can easily
access the old backups from the new server, and also easily delete the
old backups later by deleting the old filespace.

bolton01 restore /opt/iplanet/iws61 /data/opt/iplanet/ws61

I think you could use the proxy and asnode options, though I haven't
played with them personally (probably will at some point for cross-node
TDP restores at some point).

If you don't use the existing node registration, I find it easier to use
the -virtualnodename option. When prompted for the user ID and password,
use your TSM administrator ID and password. For one-offs, it seems a lot
simpler than configuring a proxy node relationship.

-VIRTUALNodename- /nodename/---

-virtualnodename bolton01

I am assuming it will prompt for ID password before restore

bolton01 restore /opt/iplanet/iws61 /data/opt/iplanet/ws61

Actually even the command line syntax did not work. However then I tried
this

I changed the name in the dsm.opt file back to the OLD name ( bolton01)
before it was rebuilt.

Then did a dsmc so it would except it as that name and then I did the
restore. Although I realize i have to get use to using the
-Virtualnodename procedure working at some point because that will be

Glad the restoral worked, but using the Nodename option to do it is hazardous,
in that it can result in the stored password for that client being changed.

In the context of an option description, the manual says what options file it should go
into. But all options can be used on the command line, by putting a hyphen in front of
them, as described in the Entering options with a command preface to the
options section of the manual. The Examples area for the Virtualnodename option
description shows an example of using it on the command line.

Richard Sims

Richard thanks that's good to know! I just went went to the ISC admin
(i know you don't use that) and typed in the password for the new name
of the server again (as I did when I registered the node) and did a
Force password reset. Then killed the dsmcad and started it again, Just
as a precaution anything else I could do to to make sure the password
wasn't changed? It should be ok? Remember the node hasn't backed up yet
under the new name yet since the upgraded Solaris OS.

 Hello all,

Need more assistance with a retrieve command (seems there are many

When we perform q ar dochub/migrate:/gwc10312008/ofuser/ we get no files

tried it w/ the switches after the retrieve command, as well as at the end as

Re: Novell Archive retrieval issue

 Richard Thanks

On archive and the 10-28 archive, I performed the list
q ar docgw21\migrate:gwc11282008/* -sub=yes
and
q ar docgw21\migrate:gwc10312008/* -sub=yes

Both listings stop after reaching barely a 1/4 into the directory COHQ/OFFILES

q ar docgw21\migrate:gwc11282008/cohq/ofuser/* -sub=yes
I get no files matching search criteria were found.

If they perform that search at this directory level,
q ar docgw21\migrate:gwc11282008/cohq/ofuser/* -sub=yes
they get no files matching search criteria were found.

The q filespace command lists 2 filespaces for each of these restores
docgw21\migrate: and dochub1\migrate:

Examine your retention values: the files of interest might have aged out.

These files are in the Archive Domain so they should be there forever or at
least a very long time. BTW Do you happen to know how to check the retentions
using the ISC?

Thanks

Make sure you are either the owner of the files or a superuser, for the access
attempt to work.
You could also try putting braces around the filespace-specific portion of the
path name, which at least on other platforms is a way of keeping the client
from being confused as to how much of the path is the filespace name. (You can
do 'dsmc query filespace' to verify what's out there.)

As for the limited results from the Query Archive: That may be all the content

Thanks Zoltan,

You may be correct could be a bad/corrupt package I downloaded the
package from the FTP site. It appears the TIVsmCapi.pkg portion
completed successfully. If I were to try a higher version wouldn' t I
have to uninstall that package or can I just leave it and the newer
would overwrite?

Why would you want 6.1.0.0 when 6.2.x is available? Or as a minimum

6.1.3.

Suggest downloading a higher/newer version or at least re-downloading

Thanks., Only problem is the node that the backup is failing on is a
important production one and we want to get good complete backups as

Re: Incremental and Full VM backups - no TSM client installed

2010-08-05 Thread Timothy Hughes
Ray thanks, I think you really answered it especially with the
following lines.

If file level restore is something the application/data owner for a
particular VM desires I'd strongly recommend using the TSM client inside
that VM to perform backups as you would any other physical server.
Recovering client files from a VCB backup is a pain.

We were ask to start doing Incremental/Full VM backups on a server that
was backing up on a different TSM Server than the VCB Proxy Machine.
Now normally we would just dissociate the node and it node to that TSM
Server that the VCB proxy machine is on no problem. However this node
(and two nodes others) is also on a different network tier. So unable
to use the TSM client we get that tcpip communications failure between
the client and server machine message when we try to use the GUI
wizard to continue configuring the TSM client and the following

C:\Program Files\tivoli\TSM\baclientdsmc
I
Node Name: SIJ409
ANS1017E Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure

So when Recovering client files from a VCB without the TSM Client this
tool would be used correct?

You have a VMware ESX host (at least one) with one or more VMs on it in which
you wish to perform Full VM backups using TSM client and VCB on a VCB Proxy

like to restore either the entire VM or certain files within the VM. So, you
use TSM client on the VCB Proxy to retrieve the entire set of VMDK and other
files that comprise that VM and save them to your VCB Proxy machine. If you are
restoring the entire machine, you could use VMware's converter or VCBRestore to
send the restored VMDKs etc to the ESX host and you are done. (You cannot just
copy the restored files to ESX and expect them to run, they will not.) If you
are restoring a client file or multiple files in the VM, you must use a tool
(e.g. VMware's disk-mount -
http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/disk_mount_utility_5_5_driver_tools/JSpiZGR0cGJkcCo=
) to mount the restored VMDKs on the VCB Proxy, peruse the newly mounted
drive, and copy the file(s) you want to the currently running VM.

If file level restore is something the application/data owner for a particular
VM desires I'd strongly recommend using the TSM client inside that VM to
perform backups as you would any other physical server. Recovering client files
from a VCB backup is a pain.

What am I missing, Tim?

 Ray, ok sounds good!

Also, I was thinking there probably would be no harm in having the node
do VM/VCB Incremental/Full backups on the TSM server that the VCB proxy
Machine is on. But having the normal TSM Client backups continue to be
performed on the other TSM Server. I know it's probably unusual for

Tim, yes; you can use the VMware disk mount utility to mount a VMDK file to

copy whatever you want from the VMDK.

Recovering client files from a VCB backup is a pain.

We were ask to start doing Incremental/Full VM backups on a server that was
backing up on a different TSM Server than the VCB Proxy Machine.
Now normally we would just dissociate the node and it node to that TSM Server that
the VCB proxy machine is on no problem. However this node (and two nodes others) is
also on a different network tier. So unable to use the TSM client we get that tcpip
communications failure between the client and server machine message when we
try to use the GUI wizard to continue configuring the TSM client and the following

C:\Program Files\tivoli\TSM\baclientdsmc I Node Name: SIJ409 ANS1017E Session
rejected: TCP/IP connection failure

So when Recovering client files from a VCB without the TSM Client this tool
would be used correct?

You have a VMware ESX host (at least one) with one or more VMs on it in which

I wonder about the size of your logs. You have it set to prune at 7-days

been picked up/dsmcad restarted?

If I understand correctly, if there is no active backup running, you
should be able to just delete/rename the dsmsched.log file and the next
backup pass will create a new one.

Noticed you have RESOURCEUTILZATION at 8. Are you actually running
multiple sessions? Also I would think MEMORYEFFICIENT would contradict
RESOUREUTILZATION since specifying the latter uses more memory?

HI Alan.

Most of my customers who are moving into VM for production systems
need/want full VM backups as well as TSM-type file-level backups.
The full VM backup is an image backup of the .vmdk file containing the
VM guest.

The horror of running production apps on Windows is the dreaded DR
situation.
Since MS doesn't have a supported method for doing Bare-metal recovery
to different hardware, recovery of a Windows system to different
hardware at DR is a slow, multi-step process prone to complications.
However, if you have a copy of the .vmdk, you can drop it back onto an
ESX server at DR, in one step, and you DONT have to deal with the move
to unlike hardware and the universe of issues dealing with Windows
system state.

And you can't get those .vmdk images with the TSM client. While it is
possible to do file-by-file BMR for a VM guest, it's not something I'd
recommend if .vmdk images are available.

TSM file-level backups are still useful for versioning. I have 2
customers using TSM (installed on the guest in the normal way) for the
VM file-level backups, and full VM's for DR.

The problem with using VCB, is that doing those full VM's puts you back
into the business of dumping LOTS of data every week.

I much prefer the use of VDR, which is VM's replacement tool for backups
in V4. With VDR you get your fullvm's, but deduped into a disk
repository. Then you back up the repository using TSM subfile backup.
Your first step then at DR, is to restore the repository from TSM tape.
Etc.

If you need more info, feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks Ray,

How can I tell if the VCB Proxy can see the disk the VM is on? This
VM is on a different Tier network so it may not be able to see I am not
positive I just need a way to verify that I am correct.

Also, and this is to anyone who cares to respond, I read The
protecting VM with TSM document and it say's that along with the TSM
Client on Backup Proxy it needs the TSM Client on VM for file restores
is that correct? Because at some point we were planning on stopping the

Prather, Wanda wrote:

HI Alan.

Most of my customers who are moving into VM for production systems
need/want full VM backups as well as TSM-type file-level backups.
The full VM backup is an image backup of the .vmdk file containing
the VM guest.

I much prefer the use of VDR, which is VM's replacement tool for
backups in V4. With VDR you get your fullvm's, but deduped into a disk
repository. Then you back up the repository using TSM subfile backup.
Your first step then at DR, is to restore the repository from TSM tape.
Etc.

If you need more info, feel free to contact me directly.

Manager. Do you see it using an CPU? Does memory utilization change? How
about disk I/O (you may need to turn on those columns in the Task
Manager
display, as some of these are not enabled by default).

If there is CPU activity, changes in memory utilization, and/or disk
I/O,
then the client is probably not hung, but something in the
initialization
routines may be slowing it down. My first though is possibly an issue
with
VSS initialization. In this case, try the following:

4. Run the Windows command vssadmin list writers. Do you get results
fairly quickly? If that command seems to hang, there this would indicate
a
problem with Microsoft VSS, in which case assistance from MIcrosoft
support
would be the logical next step.

If the vssadmin command works okay, then:

5. Search for article 1412250 (or vshadow) at the IBM support page
(see
my sig) and follow the steps there to obtain the Microsoft SDK which
includes a useful tool called vshadow.exe. Run vshadow like this:

  vshadow -wm2 vswm2.out

It will generate a lot of output data. It should run to completion in a
minute or two. If it seems to take forever, then again, this would
appear
to be a problem to take up with Microsoft support.

If none of the above seems problematic thus far, then:

6. Start the client like this from the TSM baclient directory (where
dsmc.exe lives):

  dsmc -traceflags=service -tracefile=tsmtrace.out

and let it sit.

Over time, do you see the trace file growing? If it grows rapidly (say,
to
hundreds of MB), then this might be indicative of some kind of loop.
Kill
the dsmc.exe process, open a PMR, and provide the trace.

The trace file will have *some* amount of data in it. But

1. Make sure you have the prerequisite hotfixes installed for Windows
2003
(see the client requirements web page for which hotfixes to install if
you
are not already familar with them). If the hotfixes are not installed,
your
first step should be to install them.

After verifying the hotfixes are installed, see if the problem
continues.
If it does:

2. Try installing and testing the admin command line interface (dsmadmc)

whether

I am sorry, but I do not understand, how it is possible take off load

from ESX server. After creating snapshot you still need to read full
image or some files and send to proxy. Almost the same is with normal
TSM backups excluding load, created by TSM Client. Maybe I am wrong, but
I really do not understand why?

Files are not SENT to the proxy. Using a VCB function, the snapshot of
the .vmdk file is just MOUNTED to the proxy machine across the san. The
proxy machine does all the work of the backup, it reads the snapshot
files and sends them to TSM server.

Go to www.redbooks.ibm.com, download SG24-7447, TSM 5.4-5.5 Technical
Guide. Read Chap. 24.
This is for TSM 5.5 client support ( 6.1 has more improvements), but it
explains how the proxy backup works with VCB very well.

20 VM server backups.

AFAIK the only way you can do it with the TSM + VCB support, is to set
up multiple schedulers, each with its own list of fullvm's to do.
That's what I said I think any more than 20 servers is not really
manageable with the TSM+VCB support.
Support for scheduling stuff in parallel is one of the reasons to go to
another product, like the Storserver TSM client for VM

Thanks Wanda, This is good I appreciate your response.

Our VM environment is small (currently) but growing. We have two VCB
proxy servers backing up (7 VM's) on one and (11 VM's) on another.
Friday we do a full VM backups. I am currently have the setup doing the
VM backups (FULL and INCREMENTAL) one after the other, is there a way
that I can set/schedule the VM specifically the FULL VM backups to run
Concurrently all (11) vm's at the same time? This would really help
cut down on the amount of time the backups take.

Actually, I've got customers in many different stages o
implementing/converting/updating with TSM+VM:

ESX 3.5 + Veeam + TSM
ESX 3.5 + VRanger + TSM
ESX 3.5 + TSM only (only in customers where the VM's are dev/test, not
production)
ESX 4.0 + VDR + TSM

In the first 2 cases, they are doing TSM file-level backups of many of
the VM's, doing the image backups with another product to disk, using
TSM to get the images to tape for offsite storage. The TSM support is
just not suitable for managing large numbers ( 20 IMHO) of VM backups.
VM creation is too dynamic in most shops I've run into - they breed

like

rabbits. There is no way the TSM admin is going to be able to find and
manage all the VM's by creating the lists that are required to do proxy
or image backups with the TSM VCB support. 6.2 support is supposed to
do discovery, haven't played with that yet, but 6.2 support doesn't
include image backups.

The 3rd case is only suitable for small sites, or where the VM's are
dev/test i.e. non-critical.

ESX +VDR seems is the best solution I've seen so far from a resource
point of view. You get both file-level (incremental) and image backups
with VDR, they are deduped, and VDR thoughtfully keeps the chunks of
stuff in its repository less than 2 GB, which means you can back it up
with TSM's subfile backups. So you get image + file level coverage,
without the load of doing that image as a full dump again.

OTOH, if you have users on the VM's who are accustomed to being able to
open the TSM client and do their own restores, I'm not sure how much of
a culture shock that model would create.

Hi,

Are you guys doing both TSM Backups and VM backups?

Thanks

I am sorry, but I do not understand, how it is possible take off load

I really do not understand why?

Files are not SENT to the proxy. Using a VCB function, the snapshot

the .vmdk file is just MOUNTED to the proxy machine across the san.

The

proxy machine does all the work of the backup, it reads the snapshot
files and sends them to TSM server.

Go to www.redbooks.ibm.com, download SG24-7447, TSM 5.4-5.5 Technical
Guide. Read Chap. 24.
This is for TSM 5.5 client support ( 6.1 has more improvements), but

it

explains how the proxy backup works with VCB very well.

Hello All,

Anyone know where I can find out how to Associate a node to a backup
schedule using the Admin 6.2 Center? The TSM Admin Center Quick paths
seems to show me everything but that task. Unless I am just overlooking it.

Thanks in Advance!
