I am having difficulties understanding how they could be gone from TSM. The client is Red Hat Linux, TSM client version 5.5 server is TSM 6.2. I know that the archive had an expiration date of 2017, so they should not have expired. Management class archive retention is set to 2555 days. I remember having to destroy some volumes because of tape read/write errors. Is it possible I could have destroyed the only volume that had this archive then TSM removed any reference to that archive? The only way I know to check for these archives is either on the client through the GUI, or on the server with a q occupancy command. Assuming the archive was destroyed along with a volume, shouldn't there be a reference to the archive in the database somewhere? Maybe I should be asking how to find out what filespaces are on a volume so I know if I can destroy it or not. Does anyone have a query for finding the filespaces on a volume? And thanks in advance for taking the time to think about this. Re: Ang: Re: Linux backup won't run
Thanks David reply, yes, I can ping the client from the TSM server, The stanza for the TCPServeraddress dsm.sys is a hostname ie company.ncc.oa.cc and the TcpClientAddress is a IP address (numeric) yes I have tried using IP addresses instead of DNS hostnames didn't change results. Haven't tried the traceroute from client to server and vice versa. We think??? We may have found the problem (we will see if tonights backup will work) Even though SELINUX was disabled, iptables were being loaded. Again, There was a another Linux server set up for backup at the same time with exactly same type of dsm.opt, dsm.sys and client level and there is no problem with that Thanks again On 11/9/2010 3:37 PM, Daniel Sparrman wrote: Sorry for my intrusion in the discussion ;) I'm trying to figure out why the TSM server would be located on the outside of the firewall while the client is on the inside? Usually, the server is located on the inside, and can therefore contact the client, while the client is located on the outside (or in a DMZ) and cant contact the server due to ports not being open from untrust/dmz trust. I might be entirely wrong here, but this looks more like a DNS issue. Can you ping the client from the TSM server? You can obviously not do a DNS lookup of the TSM server from the client. The stanza for TCPServeraddress in your opt-file, is that an IP adress or a hostname? (it just says .XXX.XXX.XXX as far as I can see below). And what about TcpClientAddress? Have you tried using IP adresses instead of DNS hostnames? And if so, have you tried doing a traceroute from client to server and vice versa? If i'm not entirely mistaken, a scheduled backup (when using prompt) is still initiated (from a TCP perspective) from the client. That means a) Server contacts client to start backup b) Client initiates backup. If the client cant resolve the server, you will get missed, or if the server cant resolve the client, you'd get the error below. Thomas Thanks, We can eliminate the second issue below, thats my fault I actually posted the dsm.sys file (not the dsm.opt) sorry The second possible issue is that many of the lines you describe as being in dsm.opt are supposed to be in dsm.sys under Linux or Unix. I will look into the other two potential problem areas Thanks Tim On 11/9/2010 2:56 PM, Thomas Denier wrote: Three potential problem areas occur to me. The first is an incorrect DNS configuration, suggested by the 'unknown host' messages from ping. If ping cannot convert the DNS name of the server to a numeric address, the TSM client might not be able to either. The second possible issue is that many of the lines you describe as being in dsm.opt are supposed to be in dsm.sys under Linux or Unix. The third possible problem is the 'tcpclientaddress' line. If the address specified is incorrect, the TSM server may be sending prompts to an unused address or to a NIC on a different system. Is there a particular reason this statement is needed? I don't think we have found it necessary for any of our TSM clients.

Hi Rajesh, Thanks., Only problem is the node that the backup is failing on is a important production one and we want to get good complete backups as soon as possible. There are nodes that are failing that we could try it on first but in the meantime the important production system backups will fail. Though I understand what your saying and that's a good procedure to follow. I wish these hotfixes were mandatory or there was some way Tivoli could incorporate the VSS hot fixes into a 6.x.x.x client install to clear the VSS issues up once and for all. Re: Incremental and Full VM backups - no TSM client installed
Ray thanks, I think you really answered it especially with the following lines. If file level restore is something the application/data owner for a particular VM desires I'd strongly recommend using the TSM client inside that VM to perform backups as you would any other physical server. Recovering client files from a VCB backup is a pain. We were ask to start doing Incremental/Full VM backups on a server that was backing up on a different TSM Server than the VCB Proxy Machine. Now normally we would just dissociate the node and it node to that TSM Server that the VCB proxy machine is on no problem. However this node (and two nodes others) is also on a different network tier. So unable to use the TSM client we get that tcpip communications failure between the client and server machine message when we try to use the GUI wizard to continue configuring the TSM client and the following C:\Program Files\tivoli\TSM\baclientdsmc I Node Name: SIJ409 ANS1017E Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure So when Recovering client files from a VCB without the TSM Client this tool would be used correct? http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/disk_mount_utility_5_5_driver_tools/JSp=iZGR0cGJkcCo= ) Tim On 8/5/2010 9:15 AM, Storer, Raymond wrote: Tim, I'm not certain what you are trying to achieve. Re: Incremental and Full VM backups - no TSM client installed
Ray, ok sounds good! Also, I was thinking there probably would be no harm in having the node do VM/VCB Incremental/Full backups on the TSM server that the VCB proxy Machine is on. But having the normal TSM Client backups continue to be performed on the other TSM Server. I know it's probably unusual for that to be done but shouldn't cause a issue right? Just thinking in case someone insists for whatever reason on having TSM Client do backups as well. Zoltan, Thanks for your reply, I have asked that the dsmcad be restarted to make sure changes were picked up. You have it set to prune at 7-days and QUIET so why is it so big? Are you sure any changes to dsm.opt have been picked up/dsmcad restarted? If I understand correctly, if there is no active backup running, you should be able to just delete/rename the dsmsched.log file and the next backup pass will create a new one. Question, Is there any documentation on backing up a VM that's on a different TSM Server that the PROXY or the VCB server? Both the Proxy and the VCB server's are Windows boxes. Tim Prather, Wanda wrote: HI Alan. Most of my customers who are moving into VM for production systems need/want full VM backups as well as TSM-type file-level backups. The full VM backup is an image backup of the .vmdk file containing the VM guest. The horror of running production apps on Windows is the dreaded DR situation. Since MS doesn't have a supported method for doing Bare-metal recovery to different hardware, recovery of a Windows system to different hardware at DR is a slow, multi-step process prone to complications. However, if you have a copy of the .vmdk, you can drop it back onto an ESX server at DR, in one step, and you DONT have to deal with the move to unlike hardware and the universe of issues dealing with Windows system state. And you can't get those .vmdk images with the TSM client. While it is possible to do file-by-file BMR for a VM guest, it's not something I'd recommend if .vmdk images are available. TSM file-level backups are still useful for versioning. I have 2 customers using TSM (installed on the guest in the normal way) for the VM file-level backups, and full VM's for DR. The problem with using VCB, is that doing those full VM's puts you back into the business of dumping LOTS of data every week. I much prefer the use of VDR, which is VM's replacement tool for backups in V4. With VDR you get your fullvm's, but deduped into a disk repository. Then you back up the repository using TSM subfile backup. Your first step then at DR, is to restore the repository from TSM tape. Etc. If you need more info, feel free to contact me directly. Run vshadow like this: vshadow -wm2 vswm2.out It will generate a lot of output data. It should run to completion in a minute or two. If it seems to take forever, then again, this would appear to be a problem to take up with Microsoft support. If none of the above seems problematic thus far, then: 6. If it grows rapidly (say, to hundreds of MB), then this might be indicative of some kind of loop. Kill the dsmc.exe process, open a PMR, and provide the trace. The trace file will have *some* amount of data in it. But

The Suse Linux server is (Virtual Server) administer a Novell Clustered Environment, with multiple resources running on each clustered server. I think we should stop there, rather than go back further, to desk calculators and comptometers. :-) Richard Sims This e-mail (including any attachments) is confidential and may be legally privileged. Re: TSM+VCB against TSM+TBMR on each VM
Hi, Are you guys doing both TSM Backups and VM backups? Thanks Tim Prather, Wanda wrote: 1) using VCB you take off the load from the ESX server (VCB proxy sends the data to TSM, ESX just creates the snapshot) I am sorry, but I do not understand, how it is possible take off load from ESX server. After creating snapshot you still need to read full image or some files and send to proxy. Almost the same is with normal TSM backups excluding load, created by TSM Client. Maybe I am wrong, but I really do not understand why? Files are not SENT to the proxy. Using a VCB function, the snapshot of the .vmdk file is just MOUNTED to the proxy machine across the san. The proxy machine does all the work of the backup, it reads the snapshot files and sends them to TSM server. Go to www.redbooks.ibm.com, download SG24-7447, TSM 5.4-5.5 Technical Guide. Read Chap. 24. This is for TSM 5.5 client support ( 6.1 has more improvements), but it explains how the proxy backup works with VCB very well.

Re: TSM+VCB against TSM+TBMR on each VM
OK...Thanks, I think we may have to try this until we get to more than 20 VM server backups. Tim Prather, Wanda wrote: AFAIK the only way you can do it with the TSM + VCB support, is to set up multiple schedulers, each with its own list of fullvm's to do. That's what I said I think any more than 20 servers is not really manageable with the TSM+VCB support. Support for scheduling stuff in parallel is one of the reasons to go to another product, like the Storserver TSM client for VM W -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ads...@vm.marist.edu] On Behalf Of Timothy Hughes Sent: Monday, May 24, 2010 11:41 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] TSM+VCB against TSM+TBMR on each VM Thanks Wanda, This is good I appreciate your response. Our VM environment is small (currently) but growing. We have two VCB proxy servers backing up (7 VM's) on one and (11 VM's) on another. Friday we do a full VM backups. I am currently have the setup doing the VM backups (FULL and INCREMENTAL) one after the other, is there a way that I can set/schedule the VM specifically the FULL VM backups to run Concurrently all (11) vm's at the same time? This would really help cut down on the amount of time the backups take. Tim Prather, Wanda wrote: Actually, I've got customers in many different stages o implementing/converting/updating with TSM+VM: ESX 3.5 + Veeam + TSM ESX 3.5 + VRanger + TSM ESX 3.5 + TSM only (only in customers where the VM's are dev/test, not production) ESX 4.0 + VDR + TSM In the first 2 cases, they are doing TSM file-level backups of many of the VM's, doing the image backups with another product to disk, using TSM to get the images to tape for offsite storage. The TSM support is just not suitable for managing large numbers ( 20 IMHO) of VM backups. VM creation is too dynamic in most shops I've run into - they breed like rabbits. There is no way the TSM admin is going to be able to find and manage all the VM's by creating the lists that are required to do proxy or image backups with the TSM VCB support. 6.2 support is supposed to do discovery, haven't played with that yet, but 6.2 support doesn't include image backups. The 3rd case is only suitable for small sites, or where the VM's are dev/test i.e. non-critical. ESX +VDR seems is the best solution I've seen so far from a resource point of view. You get both file-level (incremental) and image backups with VDR, they are deduped, and VDR thoughtfully keeps the chunks of stuff in its repository less than 2 GB, which means you can back it up with TSM's subfile backups. So you get image + file level coverage, without the load of doing that image as a full dump again. OTOH, if you have users on the VM's who are accustomed to being able to open the TSM client and do their own restores, I'm not sure how much of a culture shock that model would create.
