Hello,

We are looking to replace our TSM server hardware, we are currently running
the TSM server on an IBM H50. The bean counters are saying that an NT
server would be a lot cheaper than a UNIX server. They have decided it
needs to be either an IBM UNIX server or an NT server. Has anyone had any
experience with both NT and AIX servers, and if so what information do you
have regarding performance, stability etc. with one over the other.
Basically I've be told to either cost justify AIX or I'll end up on NT.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have been running a site for a couple of months and suddenly
my old database backup tapes stopped moving to vaultretrieve after a
full backup.

The only change that I have (knowingly) made was to allow incremental
backups
using the database trigger.

Can anyone tell me if/why this would cause this problem?

The site is running on AIX 5.1

unload from your test
env., load from your test env.
hopefully you have a test system

John,
I cannot relieve your pains a lot. you are right basically. I can only say
that, as a rule of thumb, we generally consider the audit db to go through
1GB per hour. but this is really a rule of thumb and I suppose lots of
people will jump to my neck for giving this figure. it really depends. the
only thing I'd like to stress is that audit db should not be used as a
housekeeping tool. it is meant to be performed only when IBM asks for it. I
say this because I remember various posts proposing this non correct usage.
to reorg the db, you only have the unload/load procedure. and that too,
should not be approached lightly. do it with IBM support if possible. I
know this sounds patronizing but you would not believe the number of
problems that could have been avoided if support had been involved in such
operations from the start.
that said, I understand your frustration. we are not unaware of the
problem.
ciao.

I*SMers,

Well, I didn't see many responses to Paul's question about unload - reload
database reorganization, and most disconcerting, nothing from the gurus in
Tucson.

I looked back in the archives, and there are a lot of exchanges regarding
this issue, but my conclusion is, no one really knows how long this will
take for large databases (>100GB). Evidently a database audit is not
necessary if no errors are encountered, and the unload - reload really does
improve performance and reduce database size.

Given this, why doesn't IBM Tivoli / ADSM provide us with better ways to
reorg our databases? In our situation, we can't possibly risk a reorg,
considering the downtime could run into days or weeks.

One response I saw in the archives told us that a 46GB database was reduced
to 26GB and select statements "that would never finish before" now run in
seconds to minutes. However, the time involved was 16 hours unload, 7
hours reload, and if an audit had been necessary, another 92 hours
there. Why such a heavy price for something that would help us all?

This is a sad state of affairs (my opinion).

I just tried this, with some modifications (added the DISTINCT keyword
and the FILESPACE_NAME column):

select distinct b.filespace_name, b.hl_name, b.ll_name from backups b
   where b.node_name='MYNODE' and b.state=inactive_version and
   (b.filespace_name || b.hl_name || b.ll_name) not in
   (select a.filespace_name || a.hl_name || a.ll_name from backups a
   where a.node_name='MYNODE' and a.state=active_version)

It worked for me. But I used a very small test case, so maybe my test
was not entirely comprehensive. This was run on a 5.1.0.0 TSM server.

It is probably not going to happen with the current database performance,
but this would normally accomplish the task:

select b.hl_name, b.ll_name from backups b where b.node_name='your node'
and
b.state=inactive_version and (b.hl_name || b.ll_name) not in (select
a.hl_name || a.ll_name from backups a where a.node_name='your node' and
a.state=active_version)

I tried it on a single node and it did not find what I was looking for. I
am going to turn in a problem record on it because it should work.

For the record, Servergraph/TSM doesn't use the summary table, so problems
there won't make it give incorrect results.
It uses the accouting logs which have always been reliable.

The fix for this is at these levels (per apar doc):
Apply patch 4.2.2.5, 5.1.1.1 or higher, available through
Tivoli Web Page to resolve this problem, or fixing
  PTF when available.

Here's a blerb from my etr/pmr (problem ticket):
The APAR you are referring to is IC34462. This issue is specific to
the summary table not being updated when client sessions are severed and
the session has to be re-established. This APAR is currently open, but
I have added you to the interested parties list for this APAR. There
was also another APAR (IC33455) which addressed an issue with the
summary table simply not being updated properly during client backups.

Here's the actual 2 apars...the doc on the problem/issue:

It looks to me that each time I run a db backup TSM will attempt to grab
a tape, think it finds an I/O error on the label read, then marks the
tape PRIVATE and then moves on to the next tape. That wouldn't be such
a problem except that it will do this to almost every tape in my
library.

I have had the drive hardware checked in the library and had both
drives replaced. Did not have the picker checked.

This problem does not seem to be happening during a regular data backup
- only during the DB backup.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas.?

"query drive f=d"

This holds for 4.2.1.15 on Solaris and 4.2.2.{patch of the day} on AIX.

Hello,

Using the command

I opened a PMR. Level 1 suggested to run the command "cleanup backupgroup"
and retry the delete filespace command. It didn't help. The next advice was
to upgrade to TSM 5.1.1.6 and retry the cleanup backupgroup and del
filespace. The next thing to do would be a dsmserv auditdb. However, this
would take a lot of time with my 55 GB database.

Has anyone else seen this? Level 1 told me that he found only one similar
problem.
Best regards
Gerhard

As with most TSM commands, are a million ways to skin this cat. Here
is a sql query I use:

select node_name, Filespace_name, (current_timestamp-backup_end)days as
"days_since_backup" from filespaces where
cast((current_timestamp-backup_end) days as decimal) >=180 order by
"days_since_backup"

In my case, I only start to clean up the orphaned filesystems after
they have not had a backup in the last 180 day (thus the 180 in the
command). It gives me a listing of the node, the filespace and the number of
days since a backup on that filespace completed.

Ben

I've noticed that if an entire filesystem is removed from a unix TSM client,
the environment (as a whole) will keep that data until manually purged.
I think this is OK/FINE/WHAT I WANT because you never know why an entire
filesystem has gone away (might just be varied offline, etc...)

but I still see obsolete data hanging on out there from 1998, 1999-ish so
what I've done is

select node_name,filespace_name as "filespace_name ",cast(backup_start as
varchar(10)) as bkupst, cast(backup_end as varchar(10)) as bkupend from
adsm.filespaces where cast(backup_end as varchar(7))<>'2002-09' > old_FS_out

or use ~where cast(backup_end as varchar(4))<>'2002'

this gives me a list of filesystems that I might manually purge after
further investigation.

just thought I'd pass this along.

Ah, I would love to have SQL query that answered this question.
Obviously this information is in the database
somewhere otherwise TSM wouldn't know which
tape to mount when performing a restore.

But for some reason it isn't in the pseudo-tables the SQL
interface uses.

The CONTENTS table tells you which file is on
which tape but it doesn't tell whether the
file is the active version or not.

And the BACKUPS table holds information
about all the different versions of a file
but it doesn't tell you which tape it is on.

Very frustrating.

Hi, TSMers,

We are running TSM 4.2 on AIX4.3.3 and I have 2 questions that couldn't
find answers from books.

1. Now that I started to generate backupsets for several nodes, but I
couldn't tell which volumes belong to which node when 'q libvol'. The
server shows only 'backupset' and when 'q vol f=d', it doesn't
give any info about vol of backupset. I plan to take them to off-site,
but when it expires (30 days), how I do know which need to come back to
on-site? Any recommendation for managing volumes of backupsets?

2. Does TSM supports to generate backupset or client image backup on
DVD-ROM? My clients wouldn't fit on 1 or 2 regular CD-ROM.

Thanks for your expertise!!

Recently we installed some new servers with clientsversion 4.2. At the same
time
some administrators upgraded there local TSM version to 4.2.

If they want some info from a server running 3.7 and contact this server
from
their local installation the server won't backup anymore because we get the

When we upgrade the TSM client on this server everything is solved.

This is a known problem and has to do with unicode and non-unicode.

But now my problem :

There is no upgrade available for OS/2 and I can't backup this machine

Does someone has a solution for this problem ???

For each device class there is a "Mount limit", generally this
is set to DRIVES, which allows that devclass to use as many drives
as you have. Maybe yours is set to a specific number. Each tape

Hi all,

Is there anyway that I can globally set all of my admin schedules to
"ACTIVE=NO"?

I was looking for something like a standard SQL UPDATE-SET type statement,
but couldn't find anything.

I want to include this in a disaster recovery script (Korn). The problem
that I've run into is that some of my schedule-names are longer than 16
characters (and therefor wrap). I could probably write something (ugly and
bulky) that would work around this issue, but would prefer something
cleaner.

Additional info:

TSM server 4.2.1.15
AIX 4.3.3 ML6

TIA

David

Re: syntax for using "like" in select statement?

Here's a couple of examples:

select drive_name from drives where online not like 'YES'

select current date as tmpdt, count(*) volume_name, stgpool_name from
volumes -

I'm sure this has been answered before, I just can't
find it in the archived on adsm.org.

How can I use a "like" in a select statement? I don't
know the value exactly, just know a portion of it.

ex.
select * from sometable where somecolumn like somevalue

Did you install the ibmatl code for a 3494 library? If so, can you issue
this command:

mtlib -l 3494lib -qL

This will verify that you can talk to the library.

Re: Can't unload the DB

doesn't this process only support manual tape drives/libraries...
I think the sm failing to initialize is an automatic tape library, is it?
we only have/had a 3494 library...and pull the drive out from the back...
define that drive as manual...load the tape by hand from the back side

this works..

Subject: UNLOADDB/LOADDB Performance Note

Dear TSM'ers,

I recently saw several postings regarding TSM performance for UNLOADDB and
LOADDB.
Last weekend I did it and here are the results.

Environment: OS/390 V2.8; IBM 9672-RC4; STK 9840 tape

UNLOADDB:

Command: UNLOADDB DEVCLASS=RTAPE SCRATCH=YES CONSISTENT=YES

TSM server V4.1.2, recovery log 1488 MB, database 8376 MB (from ANR0200I
and ANR0201I messages)
Job issued ANR4013I messages at about 15 second intervals up to 82385957
database entries,
then no more messages for 2 hours and 16 min.
Finally:
Copied 1823964 database pages, 280 bit vectors, 0 bad database pages,
50668494 database entries,
4369 MB copied.
The job ran for 144.36 minutes on a lightly loaded system.

REFORMAT:

I had some difficulty with the documentation, because it referred to member
ASAMPLIB(ANRINST).
As far as I can see, the syntax of the parameter field is not documented
anywhere. When I
used '/FORMAT n LOGNAME1 LOGNAME2 ... LOGNAMEn m DBNAME1 DBNAME2 ...
DBNAMEm' the LOADDB
failed with a message "database not initialized." Then I tried
"/LOADFORMAT ..." with the
same operand syntax as /FORMAT and it worked. With /LOADFORMAT you get a
message:

ANR1004I Server formatting complete, database ready for loading.

LOADDB:
The job ran for 619.02 minutes and produced these messages at the end:
ANR4032I LOADDB: Copied 1823962 database records.
ANR4033I LOADDB: Copied 273 bit vectors.
ANR4035I LOADDB: Encountered 0 bad database records.
ANR4036I LOADDB: Copied 50668494 database entries.
ANR4037I LOADDB: 4369 Megabytes copied.
ANR4004I LOADDB: Database load process completed.
ANR4404I LOADDB: Loaded a consistent dump image - a database audit
(AUDITDB)
ANR4404I is NOT required.

There was one other problem: A bit vector error prevented one of the DASD
storage pool
volumes from coming online. The support center pointed me to APAR PQ49053.
I applied
PTF's for TSM V4.1.6 and followed the recovery instructions in the APAR
text. One bit
vector was recreated and now the server is running normally.

The database went from over 90% to 63% utilized.

Expiration processing went from 7-8 hours to 3 hours and database backup
went from 2-3
hours to slightly more than one hour.

I was surprised that the LOADDB operation took four times as long as the
unload, but
that's what you get when you do something for the first time.

www.

NO, you probably have your messages setup so these do not come out.

Check your eventrules for ACTLOG

Do the following command:

Q EVENTRULES ACTLOG

Ours always works. It even sends them to our TEC console because we have
the TIVOLI stuff turned on. Works great.

being much more
than an overnight project ),
We run V3.7.2 OS/2 clients.
.
TSM 4.1 for OS/390 will be out of support 30 September 2002.
TSM 4.2 will be out of support 15 April 2003.
So we go TSM S/390 V5.1 (obvously)...
.
But we get in trouble of course with the client support:
only TSM Client 5.1 and 4.2 are compatible with TSM Server 5.1
So from the OS/2 client perspective, we are/stay out-of-support anyway.
.
My questions to you, ADSM/TSM community:
Have you experiences with V3.7.2 OS/2 clients running with a TSM S/390 V4.2
or 5.1 server?
Have you been faced with problems?
Were you able to live with it? To overcome them?
If you got problems, did you open a PMR with IBM? How did the support
center and the C/T (change team) react?
Officially, they don't have to support you? But did they lock you out
really and did they leave you in the cold?

Anxious to know your experiences ...

Rgds.

I have just upgraded my TSM server to 5.1.1.0 and am unable to register
client licenses beyond 1 mgsyslan client or 1oracle client etc. I have not
been able to test this on other platforms. Sounds like a bug, even
reinstalled the licenses off the 5.1.0.0 CD and no success. Any help is

Subject: Automating Scheduling service in OS/2

Hey All,

I have a question relating to automating the scheduler on a os/2 client
running TSM 3.7.2 client. What happens is upon boot up the os/2 machine
calls a script which runs the following command "dsmc schedule -password
=". The problem is that this command fails unless I have logged
in with the dsm command. So what I do currently is when the machine boots
up I issue the dsm command, I then specify the password manually and
finally I run the dsmc command with the scheduler option. I been looking
through the manuals to find a command or some configuration settings to
solve this problem but I haven't been able to find anything yet. I am
fairly new to TSM and I would appreciate any help anyone could give.

Oh by the way the Server is a NT machine running TSM 4.2.1

thanks in advance

Paul

Hello,

Did you do this via smitty - upgrade all? - I never believe it!! Maybe I
should! It is easy to unhighlight a package, or miss it all together.

Can you check that you have the correct version of help? Or that the help
was in fact installed? And that it exists in the right place.
Make sure you reinstall the help files.

I've struck this a few times, and as far as I can remember that is all I
did.

I'm sure others will be able to assist if this doesn't

Good luck

Re: filesystems and directories under the same name

For aix, I don't believe that TSM works that way...removing a filesystem
(all activity stops...)
is different in TSM's eyes than removing a file (file(s) change
to inactive...delete policies take effect, etc)(from what I've seen).
*
reminder...if you archive from that filesystem, then you may not
be able to remove it (retention of archive files...), but
keep in mind the rename option...

George,

Did a backup run between the time that the filesystem was removed
and the new file system created? I believe that when /inbound/site was
removed the data was lost. If a backup was run TSM would mark the data as
inactive. Now when your are try to restore to the new filesystem you should
be looking at inactive file not only inactive. Just a thought.

Good morning everyone

I can across an problem with no idea of a resolution.
AIX TSM server 4.2

I had a filesystem called say /inbound/site
now they removed the filesystem but still needed the pathso
they have a filesystem called /inbound and created a sub directory called
site

When you try to do a restore via the command line it only finds the
filesystem data not the directory data
If I try to restore via X window or web I have to go through the filesystem
/inbound and to the subdirectory site

How can I get the data off the filesystem /inbound/site and in the directory
/inbound/site
I can'd restore the data and then back it up again...too much data and not
enough space on the server

Sorry to hit everyone in the morning with this...but I was trying to figure

I had the same experience.
I ended up removing the original filespace (/inbound/site), but you could
rename it...as you
have another (/inbound)look/check via the q filespace command.
GUI doesn't work, but command line should (check)...q back or q arch...
good luck.
hope this helps.

There is dbx utility in AIX to check what exactly happened .U need to

Another thing I would look into bos.rte file maintenance level and see if
this as some APAR with Tivoli file sets.

You run the executable...(the thing that you download from ibm's website,

it will prompt/allow you to place the tsmimageswhereever...
when you get to the point where it asks you what demo language, you can
cancel there
(at that point you have created the images, but stopped short of an

We went from Linux Redhat 7.0 to 7.2
when we went to 7.2 we starting using ext3/jfs
The default of domain all-local does not seem to be invoking...
so we got:
ANS1149E No domain available for incremental backup
we only have 2 local file systems:

so I added domain / and /boot in the dsm.sys (or options file) and
then incremental backups started to work ok...
what's going on here?
Thanks Tim

Hello Tim,
We don't officially support the ext3 filesystem until V5.1. However
the V4.2 client will operate against this filesystem in "toleration"
mode. To make this work you have to do explicit things as you have
found. To get full support for this fs as "nornal" you will need to
run the V5.1 client on this machine.
  Thanks, x.

Please help. I've just installed the TSM Client 4.2.1 on Linux 7.2. I used
the Setup Wizard to created the dsm.opt file and manually edited the dsm.sys

AIX 4.3.3. When I run the GUI to start the initial backup there are no
directories listed under Local. Please help, I don't know what I'm doing

Hello everyone.

I have problems installing an IBM 7334 Tape Library on a RS/6000 44P
server.
When I try to define the library I get the following error code:

TSM1>def library lib7334 libtype=scsi device=/dev /smc0

ANR8418E DEFINE LIBRARY An I/O error ocurred while accessing library
Lib7334.
ANS8001I Return Code 3.

When I test the library with the tapeutil tool, it works fine, but
always send this error when I try to define it to TSM.

Anyone of you have any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Dear gurus,
Tivoli needs an extra number of "Managed System for LAN" licences.

I have lots of scheduled backups of database via TDP for SQL (v2.2) and TDP
for Oracle (v2.2.0.2).

The TSM server (v4.2.1.9) runs on AIX 4.3.3.

My environment is:
2 AIX client
1 AIX client + 1 TDP for Oracle for AIX (on the same machine)
2 Linux86 client
7 Solaris client
2 Solaris client + 2 TDP for Oracle for SUN (on the same machine)
9 WinNT client
2 WinNT client + 2 TDP for SQL (on the same machine)

I think, I have to buy:
Licences for Managed System for LAN: 25 (3 AIX, 1 Linux86, 9 Solaris, 11
WinNT)
Licences TDP for Oracle: 3
Licences TDP for MS SQL Server: 2

This is an extract of the "q system" output:
**
*** ---> select platform_name,count(*) from nodes group by platform_name
**
PLATFORM_NAME Unnamed[2]
 ---
AIX3
Linux862
SUN SOLARIS9
TDP Oracle AIX 1
TDP Oracle SUN 2
WinNT 13

The problem is:
1) I have 11 WinNT clients, not 13!!!
2) Where are the 2 TDP MSSQLV2 NT clients?

This is an extract of the "q licence"

Number of Managed System for LAN in use: 30
!!! I have only 25 clients !!!

Number of TDP for Oracle in use: 3
The number it's right.

Number of TDP for MS SQL Server in use: 2
The number is't right.

Let me try this problem again. I have my dbbackuptrigger defined to
backup to devclass "8mmdb". When I enable the logmode to rollforward,
the db wants to do a full backup. When the process kicks off, the tape
drive (manual) reads the tape and immediately spits it out. If I query
the processes, I see the process for the db backup. If I query the
requests, I see that TSM is requesting me to mount volume "DBBK.1" I do
not have this volume anymore, I can't re-label a volume dbbk.1 because
it is already in the volhist. Is there any way I can keep this from
happening? My dbbackuptrigger is pretty much useless at this time. I
can't get a tape to stay in the drive. I was finally able to label a
tape (with logmode normal only), then do a manual db backup to the new
volume. Do I need to delete the dbbackuptrigger and recreate?

Subject: Redirecting Commands in Scripts

Hello all,
I found questions like this in the archives, but no answers..

One more try =>
I want to run a script, where one line should look like this:
QUERY SYSTEM > DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM
where DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM is a S390 Filename I want to take to the OFFSITE
Location.
(This Command works great on the command line, but I want to have it in a
script!)

However - I tried to do it like this:
def script test desc='Test'
upd script test "QUERY SYSTEM > DSM.OUTPUT"

Result:
ANR1454I DEFINE SCRIPT: Command script TEST defined.
ANR2002E Missing closing quote character.
ANS8001I Return code 3.

Any hints how to route an output to a file in a script ?
I guess, the problem is, that TSM wants to direct the Output of the Update
Stmt
to a file - and when doing this, one quote is missing, of course

We are running TSM 3.7.5 on S390 (I know, not supported, but I guess this
should
work on all versions)

DEFINE DBBACKUPTRIGGER

DEFINE DBBACKUPTRIGGER (Define the Database Backup Trigger)

Use this command to specify when TSM backs up the database. A backup occurs
when the specified percentage of the assigned capacity of the recovery log
is reached. TSM uses the database trigger only if the log mode is set to
ROLLFORWARD.

Note:
If the backup fails, TSM waits 60 seconds and then tries again. It
continues to retry the backup until it is successful.

Privilege Class

To perform this task, you must have one of the following privilege classes:

   * System privilege
   * Unrestricted storage

Subject: TSM db backup.

Hello all,

Let me start out by saying that I am a new subscriber to this list, so
sorry if these question have been posted before. I have recently set
up a TSM server. The server and client code is at 4.2.1. I have the
clients backing up to the server and files going only to disk storage
pool only for the time being, until I get my tape drives. The problem
I am having is with my database backups. I set up the dbbackuptrigger
to backup the database at 75%. Now my problem, whenever I set logmode
to rollforward, TSM automatically wants to do the first dbBackup which I
assume would be a full backup. After the process gets kicked off, the
20 gig tape just gets spit out. Even when I set the logmode to normal
and try a manual "backup db devclass=8mmdb type=full scratch=yes". When
I run the command the tape reads, rewinds, and ejects without the
backup. This is very frustrating and is probably something very
obvious, but I can't figure it out. Can anyone tell me what I may be
doing wrong?

I'm in the process of moving data from one instance of TSM to a new
instance. Before I make the move and scrap the old server I'd like to
identify Nodes with files bound to management classes. This
effort is being undertaken so we don't migrate extraneous data. Of course,
the active management classes won't be a problem... easily identifiable.
But we have some archive managemnet classes that
have been out there for a long time, not active for a long time and also
have long retention periods. Any suggestions on a command I can issue to
start IDing some of this stuff. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

your client will
make "functions" unusable and that's why for some upgrades you will get a

or secondly, it could be a server change, coupled with a client code level

The recent change was unicode, yes.

At Andy's suggestion, I called this problem into support. Not for
the faint of heart, but the critical restore that I needed to get
done today has now completed.

This only affects WinNT and Win2K clients and the problem is the
server, not the client. Support says that it will be fixed in the
next release, whether or not that is v4.2.2.x or v.5.1.x.x, he
didn't know. A unicode 'thing'.

IF your tape stgpool is collocated (you have to consider if a node has
offsite tape volumes and if that
stgpool has colocation on or off as well)
AND you want to know how many tapes a node spans...
try this:
tsm: ADSM>select node_name, count(distinct volume_name) from volumeusage
where node_name='PBSXDR2' and stgpool_name like '%TAPE' group by
node_name

I gave the select statement the node name, I also provided the a partial
stgpoolname (that will just get my local, non-vaulted, tapes that ARE
collocated(stgpool_name like '%TAPE')).

FYI...this will take a couple of minutes depending on your db, etc.

tsm: ADSM>select node_name, count(distinct volume_name) from volumeusage
where node_name='PBSXDR2' and stgpool_name like '%TAPE' group by
node_name
ANR2963W This SQL query may produce a very large result table, or may
require a significant
amount of time to compute.

Hi All,

We turn on the Account Log on our TSM server (H50 running AIX 4.3.3).

This way we can charge back clients for disk space usage.

My question is, does anyone use this ?

Plus how do you get the output from the file DSMACCNT.LOG into a readable
report for management.

Is the summary file supposed to list all tape mounts for drives online to
TSM? I thought that I would use the summary log to determine tape
utilization. When I pulled the data, I discovered that we have been using
drives 0,1, and 3 but not using drive 2 (not a single mount in a month and a

Re: Mount point reserved

2002-03-27 Thread Williams, Tim P {PBSG}

If you are using a gui or command line...archive...and go back to the gui or
command line...you
will HOLD that mount.
In our dsmserv.opt we now have:
IDLETIMEOUT 15
so when a user does not get all the way out of tsm after an archive,
retrieve, or whatever
we will terminate the session (idletimeout 15 minutes).
Of course, holding a tape and tape drive is very expensive
dsmc archive file archmc=whatever
as opposed to
dsmc
archive whatever
DOES make a difference...
dsmc archive...blah blah...will return you back to your operating system
prompt after the archive
dsmc (then enter or return)
then...archive will hold the drive...

If you have multiple NIC cards and your networks are such that it can get to
TSM via

Hello all,
We recently thought we would try to change which NIC one of our nodes' uses
to do backups.
>From what I'd been able to find on the adsm message boards out there, it
looked as if ADSM, when initially contacted by a node, traps the IP address
that the node uses and stores that information untill contacted by that node
on a different IP address.
So when we were finally able to we downed the primary NIC and restarted the
dsmc sched process . ( Thinking was that the client would contact adsm with
the desired IP address and that would then be trapped and everything would
be fine. )
But it did not work.
Does anyone have any ideas?!

If you are trying to delete an entire filespace, then I have a suggestion.
With apologies to Andy Raibeck, sometimes "The Web Admin is
your friend."

On the Web Admin select from the left side "Objects", then "Clients",
then "Filespaces". A list of all filespaces is then displayed in main
window.

Scroll down to the one you want, and select the filespace name.
>From that window pull down "operations" and select "Delete file space".

This is simpler than remebering the exact syntax for filespace names
escpecially if you have many different platforms etc.

Dale, yes, I have seen this. The problem is with unicode support. Do
'help q fi' and 'help del fi' to see the new parameters that may be
required.
For instance, here is a 'q fi' of my own machine (winxp, client 4.2.1.26,
server at 4.2.1.9).
Note the namet parameter and see what happens without it.

Have you taken your problems to Tivoli, so they'll have a chance to be
addressed...?

Subject: Problems with latest Windows client

We have just started installing the latest Windows client 4.2.1.20
on 'new' Windows 2000 machines and and have come across a number of
problems and peculiarities.

I saw just recently on the list that there is a new patch level 4.2.1.26
but looking at the 'IP22373 26 READ1STC.TXT' it doesn't include any
additional APARS than the README for 4.2.1.20.
Can anyone tell me what fixes are included in this other than
IC32797 which addresses memory problems ?

4.2.1.20 has been running OK on a couple of machines - but another
is having trouble backing up the system object. The client scheduler
initiated by the Client Acceptor service was being started at the
appropriate time but was dying and being restarted every 10 minutes
only to die again. 'q files' on the server indicated that the system
object was being backed up every 10 mins. I removed 'domain systemobject'
from the opt file and this worked fine.
So I tried backing it up via the GUI and went through each system object
in turn ( COM+DB and Event Log had backed up OK via the scheduler
according to restore info ) Registry and RSM were OK but 'System Files'
caused the GUI to die. I couldn't find any error messages either in the
Event Viewer or in dsmerror.log.

Previously we had assumed that the registry was always backed up with
the incremental command - and the documentation implies the option
'backupregistry=yes' is the default when the system disk is being backed up.
Even when supplied it appears to have no effect.
We've found that this is no longer the case in the 4.2 client - hence the
'domain systemobject' line now being in our revised basic opt file.

Playing around with the GUI preference editor, I noticed that changing
the drives that you wish to backup also had the unfortunate consequence
of removing 'systemobject' from an existing domain line even though
the registry backup box was ticked ( Presumably this just affects the
backupregistry setting which as I've said above appears to be ignored ).

So moving to this new version has not been the easy ride I had hoped.
I'm reluctant to stay with 4.1 but so far not so good.

Mind you, this select command is going to give you what mgmtclases are
available to each of the nodes...

so:
tsm: ADSM>select nodes.node_name, mgmtclasses.class_name from nodes,
mgmtclasses where nodes.do main_name=mgmtclasses.domain_name

NODE_NAME CLASS_NAME

Re: SQL command

2002-03-06 Thread Williams, Tim P {PBSG}

from the command
select * from syscat.tables
you can find a table called:
TABSCHEMA: ADSM
   TABNAME: MGMTCLASSES
   CREATE_TIME: 1996-04-25 14:31:19.025065
  COLCOUNT: 12
INDEX_COLCOUNT: 3
  UNIQUE_INDEX: TRUE
   REMARKS: Management classes

then you can do:
tsm: ADSM>select * from syscat.columns where tabname='MGMTCLASSES'

and from that you can see/find a column name called:
   TABSCHEMA: ADSM
 TABNAME: MGMTCLASSES
 COLNAME: CLASS_NAME

then you can do (your answer):
tsm: ADSM>select class_name from mgmtclasses

CLASS_NAME
--
10_DAY_RETENTION
30_DAY_RETENTION
5_DAY_RETENTION
60_DAY_RETENTION
90_DAY_RETENTION

etc...

A note on ibmlink vs tivoli for problem input.
It goes to the same database...just different front ends.
I found and spoke with the internet strategist for tivoli support
and showed him ibmlink. IBMLINK if far superior. I believe the reason
for the tivoli front end is that there's no ibmlink administrator, per se.

Actually, that is not true. Tivoli is NOT a different company.
We are all IBM. "Tivoli software" is a part of IBM Software Group.
As far as the issues with service... I am trying to get
a more definitive answer from the service team (I am development)
but I think it's just a different way to route the incoming calls
and do proper product entitlement. If I get more details, I will
certainly pass them on.

Hi TSM folks,

We are running TSM V4 R2 L1.9 on an RS6K with AIX 4.2.1.9, the DB is 17,900
MB and is about 76% full. The machine is a 2 processor WinterHawk (I think).

I'm new to TSM, but I'm wondering if someone can give me an estimate on how
long a DB reorg would run for.

The follow on question to this is that the documentation implies an Audit of
the DB would also be required. Does anyone have experience that this is
definite? Also, how long would an Audit take? My colleague who is the lead
for TSM says that IBM have not been able to give any indication, and we've
heard figures ranging from hours to weeks.

TIA

John.

well back in December we put the delete command in at 365, anyways I

I believe that there's a mount point processing issue at 4.2.1.9.
There is, but I haven't checked, a fix for this in 4.2.1.11

We will be going to 4.2.1.11 this Sunday.

Hi y´all

I am installing TSM 4.2.1.9 on Win NT, I have a Dell PowerVault 128T
library.

My problem is that when migrating from disk to tape I get this right away,
ANR0984I Process 28 for MIGRATION started in the BACKGROUND at 23:20:49.
ANR1000I Migration process 28 started for storage pool DISKPOOL.
ANR1134W Migration terminated for storage pool DISKPOOL - insufficient
number
of mount points available for removable media.
ANR0985I Process 28 for MIGRATION running in the BACKGROUND completed with
completion state FAILURE at 23:20:49.
ANR1002I Migration for storage pool DISKPOOL will be retried in 60 seconds.
ANR1003I Migration retry delay ended; checking migration status for storage
pool DISKPOOL.

However im able to label and checkin volumes without any problems

I have changed the mount limit from drives to 2 (update dev ltoclass1
libr=lb0.0.0.2 devtype=lto mountlimit=2). That changed nothing

My feeling is that im overlooking somthing in the config of the library or
drives

I also have a newer version of firmware then the one tested with TSM.

Would changing OS´s do anything, go to W2K?

Best regards

Re: Server-side scripting: not supported?

2002-03-01 Thread Williams, Tim P {PBSG}

OK, a little deeper...
we have 5 groups of stg areas, basically...
Since TSM doesn't give you a good way to "control" (wait=yes is good with
move data, but there's
nothing for, say, migration) the movement from disk to tape we HAVE to use
move data commands...
We have over 100 disk vols.
We simultaneously run move datas.
If one area completes then, it goes onto the ba stg.
ALL move datas and ba stgs have to complete (5 general areas) prior to the
db backup, etc
A good scheduler, will get this done with ease. Scripting...that would be
complex.

Re: Server-side scripting: not supported?

2002-03-01 Thread Williams, Tim P {PBSG}

Even if TSM did support scripting
it would have to be a much more robust scheduler
best daily practices (high level)?
move all backup data that came in to tape and clear disk for the next
night...
next but not before...make the vault copy ba stg
next after that but not before a db backup (full)
move drmedia after that...
etc...
the scheduler would have to have dependancy ability...
We use an external scheduler for the administrative functions...
We use TSMs internal scheduler for scheduling of backup and archives.

This has been bugging me for a long time as well since it means I have to
use cron to automate the TSM daily processing rather than TSM's own
scheduler for administrative commands. I'd rather schedule TSM daily
processing inside TSM to make it easier for customers to see everything TSM
related from inside the TSM administrative client.

The security issue is bunk. Other IBM products can access the O.S. just
fine (like DB2).

If you are using the 3583 with Windows 2000 do not let the hardware guys
upgrade your tape drive firmware to 18N2, there is a know issue that is not
communicated between the Hardware and Software folks.

Our nightmare started with a physical bad tape drive. A new drive was
ordered and installed by the CE. Since the new drive came with the latest
firmware it caused I/O errors and kept going offline. The problem was
thought to be another bad drive from factory so it was replaced again, again
the new drive came in with the new (bad) firmware. The CE called IBM
support, their answer "it must be the out of date firmware on the other
remaining three drives, upgrade all firmware" things went downhill from
there.
My story now goes into week two,.. after all firmware upgraded, SCSi cables
changed, drives swapped, all drives now giving I/O errors all the time
marking tapes as unavailable causing I/O errors making a real mess that we
are still working through. Enter the "TopGun" 3583 guy who gets on the phone
with Tivoli level 2 support who tells him that firmware 18N2 and windows
2000 have "known" issues. Downgrade firmware to 16E0 on all drives, problem
fixed..., cleanup starts.

This is a true store, no names have been changed to protect the innocent.

BTW, we have had the problems you are mentioning. Thanks Kelly for your
suggestion, we will implement it as soon as we get everything straightened
out.

Any one have a problem with TSM auditing a LTO 3583 library. Some of my
tapes
are missing but when I open the door of the library I see all the tape slots
full. I use the I/O door to input tapes only as SCRATCH so all tapes in
the
library should be known to TSM as SCRATCH or PRIVATE.

When the 3583 reinitializes after the door is open sometime it sees the
magazines in the door...sometimes not. I think it's more a hardware
problem
than TSM...until the hardware sees the tapes correctly TSM won't.

Any ideas. Call has been logged to hardware support.

This has come up a number of times recently. To repeat what the Tivoli
support
person told me when I ran into in real life, I should keep another version
of
my devconfig file handy in which the 3494 definition is replaced by
   DEF LIBrary tsmlib libtaype=manual.
When a DB restore is necessary in either V3R7 or V4R1, use the special
devconfig file, mount the backup tape(s) manually with mtlib etc, and run
the
restore. After the restore, whcih seems to be completed when the system
actually does the commit (I guess that tells it when it's done), switch back
to
the reguylar devconfig file and bring up the system.

Hi all TSMers. Here is the situation I'm running into. I have to nodes, A
and B with totally different hardware and software configurations (OS). And,
B was already on backup. A will need to be on backup as well. BUT, A will
replace B soon with the node name and IP address change from A to B. In
other words, A will have the node name and IP address information of B and B
will have the node name and IP address of B when changing over. The reason
for the change is for better hardware performance. After the switchover,
node A (initially was B) will keep around for about a month or so. So, my
question is can this be done? If so, how would I accomplish this task? A
step-by-step guide will be great if possible. Worst case scenario, I can
stop the backup on B and delete all filespaces for B of off the server
before the switchover. A is running on Win2000 and B is running on NT4.0. B
is running 4.2.1.20 B/A client. TSM Server is 4.2.1.0 (NT4 SP6). Any help
will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

some thoughts...
delete archive
delete backup
perhaps delete filesystem
expire inventory
it will not be removed from any of your db backups...
and, I think, scratch tape reuse(how quick are tapes returned to scratch

settable...if you reuse tapes quicker than 7 days, then your 7 day old db

the data is moved around...(migration? reclaimation?).

We have the need to be able to completely delete (shred) a document. Once
shredded, it can't be restored. I need to be able to remove it from all the
tape pools, disk pools, off site tapes, off site databases, archive tapes
etc.

Is this possible? If I delete the document from the database (how is this
done), how do I then delete it from the seven backup databases that are
stored off site? I do not want to wait a week until they are replaced with
new database backup tapes. Is deleting it from the database enough? Is
there anyway to get the document off of a tape (or disk pool) once removed
from the database? Once a tape is assigned to a scratch pool, but not used,
can it be returned to its previous status or is it effectively erased?

Thanks for any help,

you can play with backup vs archive data
it will pull all nodes infoprior day...24 hour period...
