Re: 3583 LTO Library
Anyone running a 3583 with LTO-2 drives on Win2K? Something that might be pertinent to the I/O errors that this thread originally discussed is the SCSI adapter being used - if not fiber connected. We implemented a 3583 with LTO-2 drives recently and were experiencing terrible performance - including intermittent I/O errors and tapes going reado or unavail - the performance was OK with disk to tape migration but tape to tape copy was extremely slow. 32Gig of data would take in excess of 16 hours to copy. After upgrading the TSM server code to 5.2 and no difference in performance, we upgraded firmware. With everything updated to the latest and greatest - we still did not see any improvement. The only other variable was the SCSI card and cable - the card being what IBM supports in their X-Series servers - an Adaptec 29160. We'll - after searching the knowledge Base on the Adaptec site we got a hit on performance problems with CD-Writers and some backup tape units - not very specific - but it was worth a shot. Well, after downloading the updated Adaptec driver - Dated Nov 2002, the performance increased dramatically - we now do Tape to Tape copy at the real speed the LTO-2 is rated - even better. We now do the same 16Gig file in about 6 minutes compared to 16hours. So far we have not seen ANY I/O errors again. So - don't just blame the 3583/3580 hardware and media - look at the rest of the server as well. If you have this type of card - do yourself a favour and get the updated driver. Re: 3583 LTO Library
Hi, CC=304 = changer failure. Key=04 = hardware error. ASC=15 = Position problem. Was it working before and did you change anything? Either you do have a hardware problem or TSM isn't able to communicatie with the library. Last time I had something like this, it was after upgrading TSM. Deleting paths, drives and library and redefining them solved it for me. Re: 3583 LTO Library
The TSM Messages manual lists common ASC/ASCQ error combinations. We've seen change problems in many ways...a dropped tape within the library that inhibits the robot...the tape is stuck in the slot, check the tape...there was an upgrade to the actual tape slots themselves that caused tapes to be slightly harder to pull out and the change wasn't strong enough to pull it outan actual hardware problem. Was there any SAC code displayed in the LCD on the library? These are in the 3583 operators guide. The messages manual lists corrective action for the error codes. Lindy, We are currently seeing a similar issue. Ours is actually with a 3584 LTO library. A couple questions: Do you see any errors recorded at the OS level? In your TSM activity log, do you see tapes get marked unavailable, or read-only right after the error in your tsm actlog? What brand of media are you using? Re: 3583 LTO Library
Hi Lindy I'm not too sure if the situation was the same but I experienced that error as well and it was just after I updated TSM to the latest patches. The catch was I also updated the tape drive library drivers within windows. Do you see (on your 3583) the computer with a key icon in the console display? This would probably be accompanied by the lock icon. If so, the library is in PREVENT/ALLOW MEDIUM REMOVAL mode and you'll get the odd error. I found that if RSM (Removable Storage Management) was turned on within windows and caused conflicts with TSM. Try disabling the service within the control panel. Once that is done, you'll have to update the Path to your tape drives to be online (right now they're probably offline). UPDATE PATH server name tapedrv name SRCT=SERVER DESTT=DRIVE ONLINE=YES do that for all your tape drives and hopefully get them back up and running. I don't remember if there was a reboot in there somewhere but I'm sure it couldn't hurt. =) Cheers, Curt ___ Curt Watts Network Analyst, Capilano College [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] 19/11/2003 8:20:41 am Lindy, We are currently seeing a similar issue. I wouldn't do this. Use the native device drivers rather than the tsmscsi driver for these drives. You are probably ok for the driver, but since the elements are switched, TSM is putting the tape in one drive and then expecting to see it in the other drive. Thus the timeout. Kelly J. Better use the tsmscsi for the library and the native LTO drivers, (there is certified driver on the ftp.software.ibm.com choose storage and look for the drivers) Make use you use at least tsm server 4.2.1.6 or higer since there was a problem with data corruption and the LTO devices in 4.2.x good luck Peter At 01:36 24-05-2002 -0700, Kelly J. Re: 3583 LTO library and drives in Windows 2000
Hello, The TSM device driver does not support IBM LTO (3580) drives. You will have to use the IBM device driver for the drives ( ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr/Win2000). The device name will be \\.\tapex. Have you verified the element address to make sure that tape0 is really the drive with element address 256? The address numbering goes from the bottom up. I would use the IBM LTO drivers for the drives and TSM drivers for the medium changer. then check the SCSI chain and be sure of which drive will have element 256 and which element 257. there may be a switched definition as Kelly points out. then delete Devclasses and Stgpools and redifine everything. 3583 LTO library
Hi, I have a 3583 LTO library with 60 cartridges capacity plus 12 I/O slots. Today, when I try to check-in 6 new cartridges to my library that has 54 cartridges currently in it, TSM responded that the library is FULL. But when i go to library screen and look at system info, it says that 6 slots are empty. The 6 slots are in the same magazine under the the 2 I/O magazines. What could be the problem? Any help appreciated. Regards, Burak

The new cartridge holders were developed to accept a wider range of LTO manufacture's tapes. We will see if this helps. Hi, Today I have upgraded to the latest library firmware for 3583. I am confused about the cleaning cartdridge place inside the library. I was placing the cleaning cartd. to the top of the left columns. Today, the library started to give me an error saying that I should place the cartdridge to IO slot and at the same time it took it from the top of the left column and replaced next to a normal one. Any idea about the logic? Where should i put the cleaning cartdridge and do i have to manually give the it after each reboot of library? Regards, Burak

Things have been running flawlessly ever since. --David Nash Systems Administrator The GSI Group - Original Message - From: Mahesh Tailor [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2001 11:07 AM Subject: Re: TSM and 3583 LTO Library Here's my q drive output: Library Name Drive Name Device Type Device ON LINE --- --- 3575LIB RMT0 3570/dev/rmt0 Yes 3575LIB RMT1 3570/dev/rmt1 Yes 3575LIB RMT2 3570/dev/rmt2 Yes 3575LIB RMT3 3570/dev/rmt3 Yes 3575LIB RMT4 3570/dev/rmt4 Yes 3575LIB RMT5 3570/dev/rmt5 Yes 3583LIB RMT6 LTO /dev/rmt6 Yes 3583LIB RMT7 LTO /dev/rmt7 Yes 3583LIB RMT8 LTO /dev/rmt8 Yes I had not done an audit library, I just executed that command. And, then tried the label and checkin again but it failed with the same set of errors. Mahesh [EMAIL PROTECTED] 06/14/01 11:50AM Haven't worked with this library but: Do a q drive and make sure drives are there and online. Did you do an audit library after setting up the new library? David Longo [EMAIL PROTECTED] 06/14/01 11:45AM Hello, all! I have just SCSI attached an IBM 3583 LTO library to my TSM server. Installed the latest verstion of Atape and AIX recognizes the library as follows: rmt6 Available 10-68-00-0,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive rmt7 Available 10-68-00-1,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive rmt8 Available 10-68-00-2,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive smc1 Available 10-68-00-6,0 IBM 3583 Library Medium Changer Here's what I have: - Atape 6.0.4.0 - AIX 4.3.2.0 - TSM 3.7.4.0. - 3583 firmware 2.05.0003 and sled version 2.01.0001 Once the OS recognized the library, I executed the following commands to define the library in TSM. DEFINE LIBRARY 3583lib libtype=scsi device=/dev/smc1 DEFINE DRIVE 3583lib RMT6 device=/dev/rmt6 element=256 DEFINE DRIVE 3583lib RMT7 device=/dev/rmt7 element=257 DEFINE DRIVE 3583lib RMT8 device=/dev/rmt8 element=258 DEFINE DEVCLASS 3580 devtype=lto format=ultriumc libra=3583lib estcapa=100G DEFINE STGPOOL ONSITE 3580 DESCRIPTION=3583 LTO Library ACCESS=READWRITE MAXSIZE=NOLIMIT HIGHMIG=90 LOWMIG=70 COLLOCATE=NO RECLAIM=100 MAXSCRATCH=999 REUSEDELAY=0 MIGDELAY=0 MIGCONTINUE=YES The commands all ran successfully. I then tried to label and checkin a tape. I issued the following command: LABEL libv 3583lib search=b labels=b checkin= I replied the REQUEST and then after about 30 seconds the command completes without doing anything with the tape. I get the following entries in the actlog. 06/13/01 14:01:07 ANR8373I 003: Fill the bulk entry/exit port of library 3583LIB with all LTO volumes to be processed within 60 minute(s); issue 'REPLY' along with the request ID when ready. 06/13/01 14:01:11 ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: REP 003 06/13/01 14:01:11 ANR8499I Command accepted. 06/13/01 14:01:21 ANR8300E I/O error on library 3583LIB (OP=6C03, CC=207, KEY=05, ASC=83, ASCQ=03, SENSE=70.00.05.00.00.00.00.0A.00.00.00.00.83.03.46.00.00- .00., Description=Device is not in a state capable of performing request).
