Issue with Exchange 2000 copy and db copy command modifying logs

TSM B A Client 5.2.0.6 TDP for Exchange 5.2.0
TSM B A Client 5.1.5.15 TDP for Exchange 5.1.5

I have three Exchange 2000 servers all showing the same issue

To enable me to get a month end backup I have scheduled a copy to run on
the 1st day of the month
I use a copy so as not to affect the full incremental daily backups I
run

Full runs on Wednesday Incr (log backup) runs every day

Either copy * or dbcopy * work as expected but any subsequent log backup
the application event log indicates log files are missing or corrupt

tdpexcc.exe backup * copy /tsmoptfile=%exc_dir%\monthly_dsm.opt
/logfile=%exc_dir%\excschmth.log %exc_dir%\\excmth.log or
or tdpexcc.exe backup * DBcopy* /tsmoptfile=%exc_dir%\monthly_dsm.opt

Has anyone seen this before on all of these versions of client
I know there is a new command for exchange 2000 called DBCopy and I have
only attempted using this on one server through the GUI but then I tried an
Incremental and the same old message appears
All Exchange servers are Windows 2000 SP3 Exchange 2000 SP3 (including the
post SP3 sept update)

Does anyone else do 1 off backups of their exchange servers (month ends or
year ends)

Re: Issue with Exchange 2000 copy and db copy command modifying logs

2004-06-08 Thread Del Hoobler
Dean,

You should be able to run a COPY or DBCOPY backup without
affecting your FULL plus INCREMENTAL backup scheme.
Something else must be going on here. Are there any
maintenance tasks that might be running in between
the COPY and the next INCREMENTAL backup? (like DEFRAG?)
You said that you see an error message in the
application event log but you didn't mention that
the TDPEXCC BACKUP * INCR command fails with an error message.
Does it? If so, what exact Data Protection for Exchange message
are you seeing?

BTW.. .with COPY type backups, you can bind the backups
to a different management class so they are retained
with different policy settings. For example:

   INCLUDE SERVER3\...\copy MC_MONTHLY_CLASS

where SERVER3 is the Exchange Server name and
MC_MONTHLY_CLASS is the management class you have set up for
monthly Exchange backups.

Thanks,

Del

Re: Restore Log file without DB with Exchange 2000 TDP22 !! Urgent

2003-10-08 Thread Del Hoobler
Fabrice,

It depends on the state that the restore was left in.
Data Protection for Exchange will allow you to just
restore an incremental backup assuming the database restore
was successful AND left in a proper state which is uncertain
in the situation that you describe. You can try the incremental
restore using the GUI or command-line. If it does not work,
it means that the state that the Exchange Server
restore was left in, will not allow it. If that happens,
you will have to restore the single corrupt database again.
If you are unsure how to do this, please call IBM support.

Thanks,

Del

Re: Exchange 2000 and TSM's TDP for Exchange

2003-04-04 Thread Del Hoobler
Tony,

1.) Backup up the users individual mailbox (brick level) directly to a
PST
file, so that I do not have to have a hot spare and so that I do NOT have
to
use Exmerge. [if this is true, then all I would need to do is make the
PST
available for the user to import into Outlook and they could copy up the
 folder/messages themselves]

Data Protection 5.1.5 included a document (BRICKBACK.DOC),
sample scripts and sample configuration files (ExMerge.INI and DSM.OPT).
The document describes a Brick-Level solution utilizing
a combination of of ExMerge (export to .PST file) and the TSM BA client
to back up the .PST file to the TSM Server. It also documents how
to use the TSM BA Client subfile backup feature so that only
the changes to the mailbox (generally speaking.. new and changed mail)
are backed up to the TSM Server. The document and scripts are included
in the Data Protection for Exchange 5.1.5 package since it is the
Exchange customers that use this solution. The Data Protection for
Exchange product executables are not used in the brick-level solution.
Yes, the documented solution does require additional disk, but it does
work,
and has a good side effect of a local quick cache of .PST files for those
item level restores you get hit up for. Also, don't forget about
the deleted item restore feature in Exchange 5.5 SP3+ and the
deleted item restore and deleted mailbox restore features Exchange
2000.
Also, with Exchange 2003, Microsoft has added a special
Recovery Storage Group that will allow you to restore a database
into a separate location, not affecting the current users, and use
ExMerge to get access to the things you need.

2.) Other than allowing a online hot backup of the database, what does
the
TDP do for me if I have to restore a users Inbox or message

With Data Protection for Exchange you can always restore the databases
to an alternate server to get access to what you want.

But.. keep in mind... customers that use brick-level solutions also
need to use standard online backup solutions (like Data Protection
for Exchange) since there is no brick-level solution that will be
able to recover your *entire* Exchange Server in the event of a serious
Exchange server corruption... and even if some brick-level solution
could get close, any fairly large Exchange server restored via
brick-level would take a very, very long time.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Del

Exchange 2000 and TSM's TDP for Exchange

2003-04-03 Thread Consiglio, Tony
Hello,
Is any one using the TDP from TSM 5.1x? If so can any one verify if it does
the following?

1.) Backup up the users individual mailbox (brick level) directly to a PST
file, so that I do not have to have a hot spare and so that I do NOT have to
use Exmerge. [if this is true, then all I would need to do is make the PST

I was told long ago that the newer versions of TSM might allow bricks to be
backed up.

Re: TSM and MS Exchange (MailBox Restore and Exchange 2000 Improv ements)

2002-07-23 Thread Consiglio, Tony

I apologize, in advance, to those on this list, as I know this is not an
Arcserve listserv, but it still does aid others in issues of a backup
nature.

Zlatko,
Well, being that this is a public forum we all try our best to
offer the information we know to be true, directly from our experience, and
not off the cuff. In this spirit, I will answer your somewhat pointed
questions (if they were even questions) drawn from this experience.

Answers:
- Fought: Yes we have 8 or more months invested in e-mails on E-support,
and direct support calls. We contacted our representatives in Islandia, NY
who have direct input into tech groups that work on this sort of stuff. Were
WE the only ones? Absolutely not! but we definitely did our part to add in
this, through constant bringing up of the issues that were wrong.

- Was is so broken?: Yes! At best, the DBAgent worked 1-2 days out of 5.

- 95% operational: Now that CA has come out with hot fixes for SP3 and now
SP4 the brick level is backing up smooth, however it still will hiccup and
revert back to old errors. Now it works 3-4 out of 5 days.

- What are the rest 5%: The other 5% are same issues that we had been
dealing with before SP3 and hot fix, only they still have no solid answer
for why it happens.

- What was the percentage before those 8 months?: Before the 8 months? We
were lucky to get 1 good brick level, let alone information store backup.
Everyday the same issues with no resolution.

- Tolerable: We can deal with one missed differential backup. As far as
not fixed? I am speaking of those constant caveats that use to happen before
CA's post SP3 fixes.

- TSM does NOT do brick level restores because Microsoft does not do it:
Actually, this statement is not true. According to Veritas, Microsoft does
use their agent and they DO backup bricks on exchange 5.5 servers. All-be-it
they may only do it for Management/administration. Microsoft still does
it.

Yes, it is true that M.S. has not changed their API's, but all that says to
me is that CA and Veritas are supplying a 3rd party service to ease
administration, and for TSM not to get in the game is sort of a shame.
For those companies who do not have the budget to have a 2nd Exchange server
standing by for mailbox recovery or D.S., the ability to restore a mail
folder or message is a big plus, regardless of the technical explanation
of how its done, it is still a big plus.

Yes there was talk regarding M.S possibly doing this, however, back 1-2
months ago some one also stated that TSM might be looking into this in the
later versions of 5.x.

As for your joke, it has no teachable relevance. I can restore a mail
folder using the dbagent, quicker than I would be able to do it had I just
backed up the information store alone, and resorted to Microsoft's way of
restoring this mail.

You (instead of CA?) fought to fix Arcserve agent for 8 months??? Was it

percentage before those 8 months? And what on the end is tolerable,
something you still did not got fixed?
TSM does NOT do brick level restores because Microsoft does not do it -
the backup APIs are for information stores. Other vendors are attempting
to use messaging APIs and DO NOT restore messages but create new ones with
same content. This was explained on this list many times.
There was something in one of the discussions remark that Microsoft (not
Tivoli) is planning to enhance/modify their APIs. But if Microsoft does
not provide an API for mailbox restore then Tivoli simply would not do it.
There is a joke about a gynecologist who painted a room through key hole.

Define what mailbox means to you. If you are talking about the calendar
and
other little goodies including public folders, none do that except maybe
CommVault. And, I do not think they can do the public folders.

The thing that Veritas and Arcserver created are for marketing only and
really are so slow you can only use it for a few select mailboxes.

None replace the normal exchange backups that you have to do to be able to
recover the exchange stores.

I found out just yesterday that Exchange 2000 has a reserved area you can
restore an information store to. Once you have done that you can truly
recover a mailbox and its contents. This was Microsoft's answer to the
problem. But, Exchange 2000 requires active directory and other hurdles
to
get there. However, my Exchange boys point out you must not put any
mailboxes you might want to recover in the base information store
because
that one cannot be restored to the reserve area. That one has all the
exchange specific extensions to active directory.

Re: TSM and MS Exchange (MailBox Restore and Exchange 2000 Improv ements)

2002-07-18 Thread Consiglio, Tony

Actually, we are using Arcserve 2000 to backup Exchange5.5 on W2K
member serves. We fought Arcserve for over 8 months to fix their agent and
it looks like they have it 95% operational and tolerable. We are seeing
through=put speeds of up to 100mb/minute. We are backing up servers with
databases of up to 15gb. All-be-it we are using old DLT4000 technology, the
backups are getting done and we have been able to restore peoples individual
folders (i.e. sent items, inbox, etc...)

Now I have heard that TSM might be doing this in version 5.1x, I do not know
how true this is, but I now they DO NOT do it now...

Hope this helps

Define what mailbox means to you. If you are talking about the calendar and
other little goodies including public folders, none do that except maybe
CommVault. And, I do not think they can do the public folders.

The thing that Veritas and Arcserver created are for marketing only and
really are so slow you can only use it for a few select mailboxes.

None replace the normal exchange backups that you have to do to be able to
recover the exchange stores.

Re: TSM and MS Exchange (MailBox Restore and Exchange 2000 Improv ements)

2002-07-17 Thread Ochs, Duane

In testing this with our original Exchange 5.5 deployment the brick level
backup and restore takes up far more resources than your typical MS Exchange
API backup. Let's say your Infostore on your 5.5 machine is 30gb in size.
Your backup will probably exceed double that size because every mail box is
backed up as a separate entity any items that are shared or any single item
that has multiple pointers to it will have to be backed up every time it is
referenced in an individual mailbox. Veritas Backup Exec and I believe
Netbackup does have a brick level feature. There are a number of others but
I don't have any experience with them.

Additionally, there are other products out there that will allow retention
of deleted mailboxes for a pre determined amount of time. They do require
integration into the Exchange environment and have to be managed. But that
does not protect you in the event of total server loss or historical or
legal requirements.

In our 5.5 site and during our testing of our Exchange 2000 deployment
environment it has proven to be far more beneficial to have 1 or 2 standby
servers that are used exclusively to restore infostores for legal or
recovery purposes.

3.How many people are experiencing Memory Errors when doing so?

Scott,

This is a known issue with the Microsoft Exchange server.
Microsoft found a problem and are currently in the
process of putting out a Q article and a hotfix.
Here is a quote from the Microsoft Escalation Engineer
that we have been working with:

Throughout the troubleshooting process for this issue, we did manage
to uncover and fix a memory leak in our ESE Backup and Restore APIs,
which is scheduled for inclusion in Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2
(and a pre-SP2 hotfix is forthcoming very shortly). We will have
two KB articles for this issue: Q306283, XADM: Exchange 2000
Information Store leaks memory when backed up remotely,
which alerts the public to this issue, and Q306177,
XADM: Exchange 2000 Information Store leaks memory when
backed up remotely, which will contain the same information
as Q306283, in addition to the hotfix build number information
for the updated eseback2.dll. Unfortunately, I cannot
distribute draft versions of unpublished Knowledge Base
articles prior to publishing (due to company policy).
If your other customers are encountering this issue,
please have them contact Microsoft Product Support Services
so we can properly track their issue, and distribute
hotfixes to the affected customers accordingly.
The contact information for Microsoft Product Support
  Services can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/directory/.;

Is anybody backing up Exchange 2000 successfully with TSM (running on a
W2K platform) when Exchange 2000 is in a active/active cluster? And
have you had any errors scheduling it or more specifically have you seen
the error The Computer is out of Memory when backing the information
store up?

Re: Errors backing up Exchange 2000

2001-08-16 Thread William Degli-Angeli

I assume you have been able to backup sucessfully in the past and
that this error has just started occuring...If so, it may be a problem
that is currently being investigated by Microsoft.

There may be a memory leak in Exchange 2000 when backing it up
remotely, which is what occurs, via the virtual exchange server, in
a cluster environment. If this is the same problem, you can free up
the 'leaked' memory by stopping and restarting the IS.

Gerrit,

The current version will not work for Exchange 2000.
Microsoft introduced a new set of APIs with Exchange 2000.
We are targeting Q1 2001. And I have to say it...no promises.

2000-10-04 Thread Cris Robinson

I couldn't resist commenting on this subject, again! So here it goes

A few months ago we were getting abit annoyed with TSM and called in some
vendors to looks at their backup products. One was Veritas, who we all know,
another was CommVault which was spun off from Lucent.

CommVault apparently is in bed with Microsoft, and living in sin I suppose.
Their strategy is windows 2000 centric and they make some bold claims about
restoring individual Exchange mailboxes.

I strongly suspect that they have some inside advantage with Microsoft and
Tivoli is being kept at bay. Check out their claims at:
http://galaxy.commvault.com/products_sub.asp?id=63

Now, with that said I must say that I did not like the CommVault database
schema and their DR solution and Tivoli wised up and fixed the TSM issues we
had.

I strongly suspect that Microsoft has more than a "partnership" with
CommVault. But I hate Microsoft anyway so judge for yourself.

Good Luck -

Mehdi,

The procedure for restoring a mailbox within Exchange 2000 will be
to restore the database within the Storage Group that contains the
mailbox.

If you are asking about brick-level backup and restore. Then no.
In fact, a Microsoft Exchange project manager was asked about
when the Microsoft APIs would allow this in the future...
...and his answer was there were no plans to add this to the
backup and restore API.

Re: Exchange 2000 TDP-follow-up

2000-10-04 Thread Del Hoobler

Cris, et. al,

Microsoft DOES NOT have mailbox/item level
backup and restore APIs for any version of Exchange
including the new Exchange 2000 coming out this month.
They repeated this to many customers at the latest
Microsoft Backup BAM in Redmond last week.

There are vendors who have coded solutions using
APIs (like MAPI) that are not intended for backup
and restore. These solutions tend to take large
amounts of time for backups and full restores...
(Try restoring a 50Gig IS or storage group from
an item level backup and restore.)

Microsoft themselves claims that they have tried to
come up with a way to provide some type of
item level restore support via the backup and restore APIs
but have not succeeded because of the architecture of
the JET database (the database that is the heart of Exchange.)
Microsoft contends that customers should take advantage of
deleted item level recovery and the new deleted mailbox level
recovery of Exchange 2000 to solve these problems.

Not that I need to say this...but before making any decisions...
...customers should install and evaluate the complete solution
before committing to any particular product.

Thanks,

Del

Re: Exchange 2000 TDP-follow-up

2000-10-04 Thread Robinson, Cris

I hope we are not making Del's job a living hell ;-)

Most of us are as tired of these claims as Del is and I must say that I have
no ill will towards Tivoli and their approach to the backup/restore of
Exchange. In all fairness I am always suspicious of other vendors claims
that they have mailbox level restore capabilities.

I just hope that Microsoft is using a level playing field.

Anyway,

Thanks Del!

2000-10-03 Thread Palmadesso Jack

Here is something from the archives I've dug up.

Jack
--

This question was also asked at Microsoft Exchange Conference '99
and Microsoft addressed it by saying that they hold their
position to NOT introduce it into the "backup and restore" API
because of performance issues and having to break their architecture.

They have chosen to take the following steps when it comes to
restoring individual items to alleviate the problem:

- Exchange 5.5 SP3 - Deleted item retention

- Exchange 2000 - Deleted mailbox retention

- Exchange 2000 - Introduction of storage groups that
split the IS into up to 90 databases.
It allows you to manage those db's
  separately...including restoring
  individual databases without
  affecting other databases.
