I have SP running using directory container. Does anyone know how it
generates the SUR usage?

I have a cronjob that runs what did you do in the last 24h and once a week
I get this output:

SUR_ARCH_OCCUPANCY 1 0.00
SUR_OCCUPANCY 1 125290.75
SUR_RET_OCCUPANCY 1 0.00

I suspect is doing something like:
gen dedupst "directorypool" * and then q dedupst "directorypool" *. Then
going thru every node and computing how much unique data is in every node
and summing it up. I can't seem to find a v8.1x macro that does this on
the interwebs

2018-05-17 Thread George Huebschman
Greetings to all.
I have questions about creating versions of PXE boot iso's.
I successfully created an is on for bare metal restore of an x64 Win 2012
VM hosted server.
Now I need to restore two other servers, both Win 2008 R2 X64 VMs. They
have different baclient versions installed; one is 6.4.2 (EoL, we know),
while the other is 7.1.6.4.
I have been trying to rtfm to determine if I can make one PXE iso for both
servers, at 7.1.6.5 for example, because I have a bunch of those too.

Making the PXE iso was low on my list of fun stuff to do.
I know that my x86 2008 servers will need a different iso, and my Win 2008
non R2 probably another, same for Win 2016, but I want to make as few as
necessary. I have 7.1.x.x, 7.1.8.x, 8.1.0.x, 8.1.2, and 8.1.4. also.
I get that the baclient version on the PXE iso needs to be >= the vrl of
the baclient used to back up files, but how far back can I expect to go
from a particular uplevel version on a matching OS?
Point me to what to read.
I have read and re-read the best practices guide for recovering Win Server
2012 and Windows 8. I have not read the earlier doc pertaining to
2008...yet.
What else.
They all back up to SP 7.1.8.0 on AIX. ...well, most do, some backup to
another AIX server running a 6.x TSM server version. Again, we know that is
out of support. It is what we have to work with for now.
I am not so worried about that population, they are rather stable.

So, how much work do I have ahead?

I miss when I could call Wanda with my questions!

I think he was looking for Power vs x86 in price/performance.
I.E If you spend 50K on Power systems and 50K on x86 systems. which
could produce more I/O throughput.
(If not, that's what I'd like to hear an update on)

From what I remember from previous discussions, x86/linux would come out
on top for pure price/performance,
but managing many x86 systems vs a single/fewer Power systems certainly
has some value.
I'm sure there are many other intangibles when it comes to value.

Re: [ADSM-L] Check signals on Power vs. x86...

Yes, it is. There are very few things I would say this about, but this is
one of 'em.

For a RHEL box to match the performance capabilities it would have to be
installed on Power as well (which it can be). I think the evidence I've
seen both in experience and raw numbers has shown the power boxes can
sustain higher levels of throughput and performance. Because to get an
x86 box to perform at those levels you would have to spend just as much,
buying one really powerful x86 box, or spreading it across multiple boxes.

All that said, if we didn't have a good AIX guy here, I'd go RHEL on
multiple boxes, or on a really powerful x86 box. I can admin AIX, but I'm
much more comfortable on Linux. So, as someone else said, it all depends
on what you're good at.

I'm looking around for an update on my expectations that power hardware
and AIX is more performant per memory/CPU/IO than x86 and RHEL.

I know this topic comes up from time to time; I don't think I've seen it
rehashed particularly recently.

I'm an advocate of AIX for this, but I wanted to check signals and
experiences, again.

2011-03-29 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Thomas,

I am not sure if not having a backup of this file will prevent recovery. It
would seem that this is part of the C: drive and not a nominal part of the
system state. However, one thing I would suggest (and I am personally
starting to think of it as a 'best practice') is to use SNAPSHOTPROVIDERFS
VSS so that all volumes (not just system state) are backed up via snapshot.
This will ensure that files are not skipped because if they are opened for
exclusive use by some other application.

I would also suggest periodic DR testing in order to verify that the backup
and restore procedures are working.

I have an issue I need to find a solution for. We use EMC's Diskxtender on two
Windows servers. At some point in the past a Diskxtender option was changed
that had detrimental effect on backups..TSM started backing up Diskxtender stub
files instead of the actual files. That option has been corrected, but I need
to find out what files exist on TSM that are stubs. I cannot simply re-backup
all the data as it would all have to be recalled from Diskxtender and we are
talking about many terabytes of data.

I tried doing queries from the client (QUERY BACKUP) and then comparing the
dates backed up versus the create/mod date, but that does not help because
Robocopy has been used to populate some of the filesystems and the create/mod
dates were copied and not updated. Thus my TSM backup date is nowhere near
either of those dates as it would normally be.

The actual issue is that if one of the stub files is restored from TSM - the
length is zero and due to the fact that TSM does not backup/restore the
Diskxtender metadata that is stored either in an alternate data stream or some
non-standard file metadata - the file is basically garbage.

I have tried looking from the server side with SQL queries but cannot find
anything that will help in this quest. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance..

Hi Tom,
I'm not familiar with Diskextender
Is there a difference in the names of the filespaces that are being backed up
in TSM ?

A q filespace nodename on the TSM server.
If the bad backups are listed as a different filespace you can just delete
the filespace.

Do the stubs have a different extension ?

We just upgraded our TPD for MS-SQL from v5.5.1 (the initial install
version, complete with license file) on a 64-bit machine, and discovered
that the installer ate our license file (the name of which escapes me just
now).

Our Windows admin eventually found a workaround - upgrading to v5.5.3 by
running the MSI installer directly, rather than through the setup.exe.

We are opening a ticket with IBM on this, but just wanted to share.

I am investigating the proxy backup for VMware vSphere 4 VMs and the
redbook states that the proxy must have adequate space allocated for
interim storage of the backup data (images, files, etc.). Is there a way
to stream the data directly to the TSM backup server which has EMC SAN
as primary storage? Would prefer to try and eliminate the additional
cost for proxy storage.

Am I off my rocker, or does anyone know if this is possible/supported?
All feedback welcome...

Hello All,
From time to time we are having issues where clients trying to configure
client based encryption on their servers can't get TSM to prompt them to
generate an encryption key. This seems to be a problem that has been
occurring only on clients running various levels of Windows OS and different
levels of the TSM ba client. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced
periodic failures when having clients' setup encryption, and if so what do you
do to correct this problem? The steps we are using to have clients configure
encryption are below; please let us know if we are doing something incorrect
in the process.
1.Add these statements to dsm.opt
encryptiontype aes128
encryptkey save
include.encrypt *\...\*
2.Run 'dsmc q sched' to confirm the client can communicate with
tsmin01
3.Run a very small backup to initiate the encryption key creation
routine.
4.When prompted at the bottom of the screen, choose the option to:
Generate an encryption key.
5.Enter the encryption key and confirm it. You will see your
backup run to completion and the encryption key will be stored
in your Windows registry.

2009-10-01 Thread Kinder, Kevin P
Running TSM 5.5 on z/OS.

Run nightly backups to disk storage pools, then migrate those to tape
the next day.

Last night, one of our disk storage pools filled up due to a mass dump
of data on one of the clients being backed up to that pool

The high and low migration limits on this pool were ser to 85% and 60%
respectively.

Automatic migration of this storage pool kicked on as configured, with
four processes starting to migrate the data in this pool to tape.

Three of the process finished within a couple of hours. The fourth,
however, is still running seven hours later.

This morning, I tried to start another migration process on this pool,
but it will not initiate. Only the one that is still running from last
night is active.

My questions:

1) Since this is an auto migration process kicked off by the thresholds,
does it have to complete before any new migration processes can start?
Is there any way to change/override that if that is the case? Is only
one process running because the only data remaining in that pool is
likely, as far as I can see, from a single node?

2) Could I safely cancel this migration session, then restart four (or
six, or eight) new migration sessions? It sometimes takes as long to
cancel a migration session as it would be to let it complete, and I
wouldn't want to take another six hours to cancel it and get back where
I started.

3) Will this auto migration session complete when it gets to the lower
threshold (60%) or will it keep going until the pool is empty?

2009-04-29 Thread Bell, Charles (Chip)
I have a copygroup set up for a domain that is strictly a bunch of nodes for
a document imaging application, millions of files each. I am going to change
the backups from the incremental-forever to image backups. Also, I am going
to change the retention to where I would only keep the active copy of each,
and that's it. I don't want any inactive copies, and I don't want to keep
them around for ANY amount of time, only the active. Reason being, the files
in those NTFS file systems never change, and they are only archives.

Here is the current config

Versions Data Exists2

Versions Data Deleted 1

Retain Extra Versions 30

Retain Only Version60

Based on my comments above, would that need to be?:

Versions Data Exists1

Versions Data Deleted 0

Retain Extra Versions 0

Retain Only Version0

Please help...This is one of the parts I hate about TSM. I know it's probably
simple, but I never can seem to remember what each retention parameter (as
shown above) MEANS! J

God bless you!!!

Hello All,

I recently started using resourceutil 7 in opt file and
maxnummp=3 for doing very large restores using the GUI
and I would see the advantage where I had 3 or more restore
sessions with up to 3 tapes being used.

If I were to use the cmd line would I see the same ?

of course, none of the parameters AFAIK are bound to GUI, maxnump is
node propertie and resourceutil is dsm.sys|opt parameter (for example)
cli reads dsm.sys|opt and connects to the server as node which has
maxnump allowed value

i hope im right

Nodes who are not in a group are collocated by node.

-
If you specify COLLOCATE=3DGROUP but do not define any collocation
groups or if you specify COLLOCATE=3DGROUP but do not add nodes to a
collocation group, data is collocated by node. Be sure to consider
tape usage when organizing client nodes into collocation groups.
For example, if a tape-based storage pool consists of data from
grouped and ungrouped nodes and you specify COLLOCATE=3DGROUP, the
server does the following:
+ Collocates by group the data for grouped nodes only. Whenever
possible, the server collocates data belonging to a group of
nodes on a single tape or on as few tapes as possible. Data
for a single node can also be spread across several tapes
 associated with a group.
+ Collocates by node the data for ungrouped nodes. Whenever
possible, the server stores the data for a single node on a
single tape. All available tapes that already have data for
the node are used before available space on any other tape is
 used.

That's how it works. All of our nodes belong to a group, even if there is
only one node in the group. This makes it easy to catch a node added where
the group assignment was missed. We also do some collocation local by
filespace or node and offsite by group.

Bob.

We do collocation by groups, nodes, filespaces, or none depending on the
storage pool.

Here is our query to see if we've got any volumes that are out of spec as
far as our collocation strategy is concerned.

select -
cast(vu.stgpool_name as char(9)) as Pool, -
(select access from volumes where volume_name=vu.volume_name) as
Access, -
cast(vu.volume_name as char(9)) as Volume, -
cast(count(distinct nd.collocgroup_name) as decimal(4,0)) as
Groups, -
cast(count(distinct vu.node_name) as decimal(3,0)) as Nodes, -
cast(count(distinct vu.filespace_name) as decimal(5,0)) as
FSpaces, -
(select pct_utilized from volumes where volume_name=vu.volume_name)
as Util, -
(select pct_reclaim from volumes where volume_name=vu.volume_name)
as Recl -
from -
volumeusage vu, nodes nd -
where -
vu.node_name=nd.node_name -
group by -
vu.stgpool_name, vu.volume_name -
order by -
Groups desc, Nodes desc, FSpaces desc

In this query, we should see a 1 in the column corresponding to the
collocation type for a storage pool.

For example, the 2 in the groups column for tcopy2b shows me that this
volume has information from 2 groups.
This should be remedied for fastest recovery in a DR situation.
TARCH1 is not collocated, so WG1016 is fine with 4 groups and 5 nodes.
TPOOL2 is collocated by node, so the 3rd volume is fine, since it shows just
1 node on the volume.
TCOPY3B has directory information on it and is collocated none, so it also
is fine with 131 filespaces and 84 nodes.

Pool Access Volume Groups Nodes FSpacesUtil

2008-06-30 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.
I just got this today and was wondering if the errors being reported
indicate there is more than one problem with this client. The client is
running version 5.4.1.6 on Windows 2003. The entry
SNAPSHOTCACHELocation seems odd because so far the info I have found
on it refers to Windows 2000 use only. This is the first time I have run
across any of these errors so I'm a bit confused, and I'm sure since
there is not much in the way of questions it looks that way.

Hello,
I just wanted to tell you guys that I love you all and I am so grateful
to have each of you in my life. I hope you all have a wonderful and
blessed day. It was difficult for me to decide who I thought would DO
this because many people claim to pray, but not everyone does. I hope I
chose the right twelve. May everyone who receives this message be
blessed. REMEMBER to pray. That's all you have to do. There is nothing
attached. Just send this to twelve. Prayer is one of the best free gifts
we receive. There is no cost but a lot of reward. Make sure you pray,
and pray believing that God will answer.
May today be all that you need it to be today. May the peace of God and
the freshness of the Holy Spirit rest in your thoughts, rule in your
dreams tonight and conquer all your fears. May God manifest himself
today in ways that you have never experienced. May your joys be
fulfilled, your dreams be closer and your prayers be answered. I pray
that faith enters a new height for you, I pray that your territory is
enlarged and I pray that you step into your destiny within the ministry.
I pray for peace, health, happiness and true and undying love for God.
Now, send this to 12 people within the next 5 minutes and remember to
send this back...I count as 1...you'll see why.

Hi all,

I started to backup my data via encryption from an AIX system via the
following extra lines in the dsm.sys file;

   encryptkey save

   encryptiontype aes128

   include.encrypt/ros/BACKUP/.../*cr_servers_one_year

I've checked the data in TSM and all this data is being backupped to the
DEFAULT mgmtclass???

Does anyone has the same experience or is there something else I have to
put in the dsm.sys file?

Thanks,

Oscar Kolsteren

It's in the BACKUPS table.
You can do a SELECT on the backups table, but it's the slowest query you
can do.

The BACKUPS table is indexed by nodename, so you will generally do
better running the query 1 nodename at a time.

2006-12-20 Thread Richard Sims

Kerry -

First, use a Subject line, to track posting threads.

Second, refer to the Messages manual, or 'dsmc help', for the basic
explanation of message meanings, which in this case tells you that it
was 'dsmc sched' that itself was a background process, and because it
is running in the background it can't prompt for the password it
needs in order to proceed.

Before you run any schedules, you need to perform a basic client-
server interaction, like 'dsmc q sess', as root, to have the client
password stored locally for it to be used automatically in
schedules. See the manuals regarding setting up scheduled processes.

Hi,

Do a 'q vol 22 f=d' to find out if the tape have data on it.
And do a 'q volhist t=dbb' to find out if the tape is a db backup tape.

Check in the tape with 'checkin libv medslib 22 status=pri
checkl=yes'

Update your admin schedule which deletes volume history, ex 'del volhist
t=dbb todate=today-7'.
-7 should match your sites requirement ie -14 days or what ever.

Get back to the list if you still have a problem.

PS. Use subject field.

Hi Kerry!
This means that the volume is not a scratch volume, probably because
it's still in TSM's volume inventory. Check the volume's current status
by issuing a q vol 00022 f=d.
If you are using DRM, you should use the DRM commands to return the
volume.

Most precisely, no. But it's going to be subjected to the retention
characteristics of the domain to which you inserted it.

In most cases, folks duplicate the administrative domain on the target

No. What that means is that there were files on the (damaged) primary
tape volume that cannot be accessed using the copy pool volumes supplied
for the restore.

One of two things happened here.
1. Either you didn't bring back all the copy pool volumes needed to do a
full restore of the damaged primary pool volume, or
2. there are files on the primary pool volume that never got copied to
the copy pool (or were deleted from the copy pool later).

The first scenario can be tested by running

RESTORE VOL badvolserial PREVIEW=YES

If that comes back with additional copy pool volumes, you can perform
further restores. If it doesn't, the second option above is true, and
you've restored as much as you can.

This is the syntax in the TSM implementation course book for the include

occurs, it pretends not to see this include entry at all. We have tried
several permutations of the syntax and they all seem to be ignored. This
client is a part of a schedule that contains other clients so we cannot
use the objects field on the server definition of the schedule. We are
restarting the client after each attempted correction and rerunning the

manually and the same thing occurred but I think that is the supposed
behavior when doing a manual.

Hello TSMers,

I've been getting messages like the following on several drives and for
several cartridges:

06/28/06 10:16:58 ANR8948S Device /dev/rmt/16m, volume 205975 has issued

media cannot be loaded and threaded. 1. Remove the cartridge, inspect it as
specified in the product manual, and retry the operation. 2. If the problem
persists, call the tape drive supplier help line. (SESSION: 4514)

We have been having more and more drive and tape problems over the last six
months or so, after a couple years of solid performance. I'm trying to
figure out the root cause or causes. I suspected drives, because I also
saw write errors on specific drives... we swapped them out, and it seemed
better for a while... now I don't see the write errors, but I see the
messages above.

Some clues... these seem to be occurring only on recently purchased, new
tapes. We did change vendors about a year ago to get better pricing. I
have to collect some stats on how many tapes have problems, but my guess is
only a dozen or so among the 4000 tapes we purchased over the past year
from this vendor. The only other thing I can think of is changing the
library to autolabel. Oh, and we upgraded from TSM 5.2 to 5.3 in April
'06.

Is this a tape problem (bad batch or low quality), or a drive or library
problem?

My environment:
TSM 5.3.2.0 on HP-UX 11i. Big server (HP rp7410, 8 CPU, 12GB RAM, HP
XP512 RAID5 disk)
Five TSM servers on this box -- one library manager, four data handlers.
The errors above are in the library manager's activity log.
STK L700 library w/ six DLT7000 (not being used) and 14 IBM LTO2. 618
slots, library is usually full. We have about 3000 tapes onsite.
Library is doing tape cleaning, one universal cleaning tape in the library.
Sometimes I see Tapealerts saying the cleaning tape is not data grade...
was TSM trying to write to it? Should we let TSM do the cleaning instead?

Hi to all

I tried to run a LanFreeBackup on a Windows client version 5.3.2.0

   On the Tsm server side:

  1. Define server with lla=1502 (EXCHANGE_SA TCPIP 132.74.1.78
  1502 1 Yes No No)

  2. Define path (EXCHANGE_SA

   On the client side:

1. Add on the dsm.opt:

  enablelanfreeyes

  lanfreecommmethod tcpip

  lanfreetcpserveraddress 132.74.1.48

   lanfreetcpport 1502

2. On the dsmsta.opt:

 COMMmethod TCPIP

 TCPPort 1502

   DEVCONFIG devconfig_sa.txt

   SANDISCOVERY ON

   SERVERNAME ADSM

3. I run the wizard to create the devconfig_sa.txt

 Here the syntax:

SET STANAME EXCHANGE_SA

2006-03-13 Thread Robin Sharpe
Dear colleagues,

It's time for us to split our TSM into several new instances because our
database is now just too large -- 509GB -- and still growing. My initial
plan is to create five TSMs - four plus a library manager - on the existing
server (an 8-way, 12GB HP rp7410 with 15 PCI slots). This is cost
effective since no additional hardware or license is needed - just lots of
SAN disk for the databases, which we have available. But, I've been
thinking what do you think about the following:

A more creative approach is to place the new TSM servers on existing
large clients. This has several advantages:
- eliminates need to acquire new servers, saving physical room, power
and cooling requirements, additional maintenance.
- client benefits by sending its backup to local disk using shared
memory protocol. Eliminates potential network bottleneck.
- Client sends data to tapes using library sharing; no need for storage
agent.
- Use of local disk eliminates the need for SANergy
- heavy clients pay for their usage by providing backup services for
smaller clients.

There are also some concerns (not necessarily disadvantages):
- May require CPU, memory, and/or I/O upgrades (still cheaper than
buying a server)
- TSM operation may impact client's primary app. Can be controlled by
PRM on HP-UX.
- Incurs licensing cost.

Thanks for any insights

[...]

I've got 12 servers on 2 boxes at the moment, 6 of which are more or
less application-specific.

The more TSM server instances, the more complexity, and the more you
must depend on automation and automatic validation and monitoring.
Because of this, I would recommend against calving off a TSM server
only because there is a powerful box running app X.

I split one app off to its' own TSM server because of database
overhead: WebCT 'Campus Edition' which has some unsavory habits with
its' filesystem, and caused lockups.

I split one app off because it was excessively sensitive to outages:
Content Manager.

I split off my Cyrus back ends because each single node of them had
big databases (though they're teeny compared to yours).

So, if you have application Q which you would tend to split off even
if the split instance were to stay on your main TSM server, then I'd
consider that a candidate for motion to the other box.

---

Another thing to consider is that this opens up application Q to the
union of the upgrade / outage / maintenance issues of Q and TSM. This
might be a non-issue, but could possibly be a big deal. (What, we
need new tape drivers, to match the microcode applied yesterday
morning on the drives? Well, you can schedule a production outage for
next tuesday...)

---

Once you're over the automation/planning/monitoring hump for multiple
servers, and the additional hump associated with servers on multiple
hosts, you'll find that lots of concepts become much easier: DR for
the TSM infrastructure gets more straightforward because there's much
less implicit state, you've made much more of it explicit. This is a
lot of work, but gives good value.

Tim,

Thanks for the feedback. We also have two other Netware servers which
complete their backups within the backup window. The three are identical
except for the Volume/Data sizes. The offending server is considerably
larger than the other two in terms of data volume. Like you these other two
were recieving the Terminating Session errors until we changed the
COMMtimeout value.
But we're still experienceing slow backups on the offending server.
The client seem's to spend 95% of it's time scaning the FS. I didn't think
scaning the FS would be affected by network performance, except for the
initial interrogation of the TSM Server DB for the client specific FS
info??? Does anyone know how the FS scaning component works for a client?

TSM Client 5.2.2

We tried Swapping Tivoli patch cables and it did not make a difference.

Also tuning options in the dsm.opt file has not made a difference.

We are getting the following message also

But there are backups that gets the above message also and they all finish
at a normal time. Also we have 5 other Novell Clients with the same dsm.opt
and client version and they complete at successfully at a normal time.
it is just this one backup that is extremely slow.

I can appreciate that the API filespaces are sent data by the TDP

WinNT and I cannot for the life of me figure out why.
Can anyone shed any light on this? perhaps I'm just looking through the
wrong lens.

Thanks,

Matthew,

The Platform is set to whatever client-type connected last
using that NODENAME. In this case, it was probably the
BA client scheduler, this WinNT.

Thanks,

2005-07-11 Thread Jeff White
Hi,

I have an interesting TDP for SQL problem. Similar issues have been
addressed many times on the forum, but this is a bit different, i think.

I have:
Windows server running multiple (x2) SQL server instances
SQL server called SERVERX
One instance called INSTANCE1 and the other called INSTANCE2
TDP
TSM 5.2.2 server on Z/os 1.5

My configuration:
I have defined two TDP nodes, i.e. TDPNODE1 and TDPNODE2
Two DSM.OPT files (TDPNODE1.opt and TDPNODE2.opt) with appropraite node
names
Command files (one for log, one for incremental and one for full backups).
This is the contents of the LOG command file:

@ECHO OFF
set sql_dir=C:\Tsm\TDPSql
cd /d %sql_dir%
echo Current date is: C:\TSM\tdpsql\logs\sqlbkup.log
date /t NUL C:\TSM\tdpsql\logs\sqlbkup.log
echo Current time is: C:\TSM\tdpsql\logs\sqlbkup.log
time /t NUL C:\TSM\tdpsql\logs\sqlbkup.log
start /b /wait tdpsqlc backup * log /tsmoptfile=c:\tsm\tdpsql\tdpnode1.opt
/logfile=c:\tsm\tdpsql\logs\sqlbkup.log
start /b tdpsqlc backup * log /tsmoptfile=c:\tsm\tdpsql\tdpnode2.opt
/logfile=c:\tsm\tdpsql\logs\sqlbkup.log /sqlserver=serverx\instance2

Scheduled service
TSM schedule with OBJECTS field using a command file on the windows server
I backup logs, daily incr and full weekly

This configuration works just fine. I get two filespaces for each nodename
(meta and data for each).
Node name is TDPNODE1
Filespace name of SERVERX\TDPNODE1\meta\
Filespace name of SERVERX\TDPNODE1\data\0001
and
Node name is TDPNODE2
Filespace name of SERVERX\TDPNODE2\meta\
Filespace name of SERVERX\TDPNODE2\data\0001

My problem?
Running via the schedule is good. The backups run and are written to the
correct filespaces.

If i run a backup for TDPNODE1 from the GUI, this works fine.
But, if i run a backup for TDPNODE2 from the GUI, it creates filespaces
with TDPNODE1 as the node name but filespace names of
SERVERX\TDPNODE2\meta\ and SERVERX\TDPNODE2\data\0001, and increments
the fsid count.

So, the problem only occurs at the GUI. Yes, i have followed the red book
where it states clearly that to use the GUI for operations of another SQL
server instance, create a shortcut to tdpsql.exe and specify another
instance:
/sqlserver=server_instance_name.

I can get by because the normal method of backup, via the schedules, works
good. But if the DBA decides to do a manual/GUI backup, the data is written
to a different filespace.

I noted Del's comments last month that perhaps some subscribers on the
list will share experiences of their environment, so i though i'd ask the
question.

Any thoughts?

Jeff White

Most likely this is an NFS mount that goes away or maybe
a CD ROM Mount that has a problem of some kind.

Look at dsmerror.log on the client and see. It would probably
say something about stale NFS handle or similar.

There should be more than the one line error you put in email.

hi all !

there is a need to now all archived files from a special node, so i tried
the following:

select LL_NAME,count(*) from archives where NODE_NAME='cob03' group by
LL_NAME
 ...it worked fine.

but now i want this output in a file (linux), so i typed

select LL_NAME,count(*) from archives where NODE_NAME='cob03' group by
LL_NAME /path/filename
the result is ANR8038E ...unable to open file '/path/filename' for
redirection

i wondered, and tried
select LL_NAME,count(*) from archives where NODE_NAME='cob03' group by
LL_NAME /filename
the result seems to be allright, but the file 'filename' is not on the
system - 'find' couldn't find it anywhere

can anyone tell me, what the solution is ??
any idea is welcome

thank you very much!

Dierk

You are aware of the fact that the redirect will go to the local machine
you're sitting on? So if you're on a Windows box, redirecting to a path
with '/' in it will fail?

If so, do you have write authority to the specified path? Have you tried
redirecting to another location?

Best Regards

Good morning !

My tsm client on a w2k prof workstation does not work. The message is:

Incremental backup of volume '\\bwi_1\user1\edvdoc'

But: Any Systemobject is excluded. Only a few logfiles from drive C: should
be saved, those files are owned by a user not by an administrator. The
drives W: and H: are backed up propperly, but only if domain C: is
excluded. So i think there is a problem with permissions on drive C: ?!

Who has an idea to solve this problem?

Thank you very much!
