2021-01-08 Thread Steven Kenney
When was it added? From what I've been told its buggy and not as fluid and
painless as vmware. I can migrate both hosts and datastores at the same time
LIVE while a machine is running. Does Proxmox have DRS?

Proxmox has both of these featues. Plus with a ceph backend storage migration
should become less of an issue as you effectively mirror drives across cluster

[AFMUG] Hybrid fiber + dc pre-made cables

2021-01-08 Thread TJ Trout
Thinking of offering fiber+dc premade patch cables (2f+2dc) and tower trunk
cables (12f 4-6 dc) and was wondering if this has any interest?

Was thinking to offer the 2f + 2dc cables in 3ft through 100ft and the 12f
and 24f cables will start at say 50ft and go up.

Wondering what AWG you guys would want, thinking #14 on the 2f cables and
multiple #14 or #12 on the trunks?

Matching forward and reverse DNS is best practice in any case. Less
chance of email issues, and I feel like a state postal abbreviation in
the name might give the geo location people a clue.
123456-customer-dynamic-city-NY.hosts.myisp.com.

Ditto, had a new IP allocation about a year ago. Updated reverse DNS
etc and just used it. No issues. I am not sure if it makes a
difference but we do a reverse and matching forward DNS entry for
every IP address.

We got our new allocation last year and still have issues pop up. IP
reputation, weird geolocation, I think this allocations was in canada
prior. We didnt even turn up for 3 months to let all the submissions
process. Allocations given out now are dirty

Yeah don't worry about that, just get them online and the internet will
figure it out automatically, should you have an issue with customers on
netflix for example stating they are outside of the USA then you would
submit for a correction.

There's a few companies and organizations with their own GeoIP databases,
Maxmind is the biggest, and there is a funny (and frightening) story about
the risk in those assumptions:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/08/10/lawsuit-how-a-quiet-kansas-home-wound-up-with-600-million-ip-addresses-and-a-world-of-trouble/

Most companies try to do the work themselves to reduce the risk of networks
faking their location. Maxmind allows users to request updates at
https://support.maxmind.com/geoip-data-correction-request/ .

I dont understand why theres not a service for that. I looked and looked,
but may have been looking the wrong direction. the brothers wisp guide
covers the big ones, and i believe theyre still updating it. It would be
nice if that were an RIR component where the geolocation services pull from
there, but then you have VOIP location registration issues on VPNs.

Re: [AFMUG] geolocation

Pretty sure those services infer location based on data collected from
3rd parties.  Cell phone data, what WiFi SSID's you see, Cell phone
locations, etc.  Often they can get it exactly right, sometimes they
only get the right state.  There's someplace in the middle of Kansas
which is the gelocation coordinate for IP's where they only know it's in
the USA and can't be any more sure than that

If they're wrong now, they'll become right over time as the companies
get usage data.

[AFMUG] mapping competitor interference

2021-01-08 Thread Steve Jones
Back in the 900 fsk day I had a state map with tags showing identified
transmitters I could reference when we had fade or i had to change
channels. it was really useful.

we ran 2.4 fhss, so in that we were the interference

3ghz got to the point of ridiculous where i would end up with my network
laid out in cards all around my living room floor when there was an issue
(we had a ton more sites and access points by that point) SAS im hoping
will clear this up, but commsearch is disappointing and only shows me my
grants

now in 5ghz its a constant battle trying to manage self interference and
outside sources. theres too much to use tags and a pushpin. I try to be a
good steward of the spectrum and not step on others toes.

Linkplanner allows me to manage my own channels with the color coding, but
i dont have a way to track outside sources, may be too big to do, its
definitely not worth the manual effort.

If there was a way to script a run of the 3k SA and put at least that data
in a sector chart it would be helpful.

In New York the F word is like a comma, period, and question mark.  Even
some devout Christians will salt their language when they're not in
church.  You hear it so often that it doesn't even register anymore.

but it does depend on the setting.  In business communication it's
quite rare, but among tradesmen it's constant.  But even the tradesmen
know to keep it quiet if they're working in a professional building.  If
you're pumping gas you'll hear "Man these effing pumps are are effing
slow, nobody got the effing time to wait for this."  He's not even mad,
he's just talking.

There are exceptions both ways.  I knew a home builder who had creative
substitutions for every swear word, so he'd emulate those speech
patterns but threw in things like "son of a biscuit".  You can also bump
into a lawyer who talks like a sailor.  I think the root is whether they
grew up in a blue collar household or not.

A waitress can NOT say "you want some effin fries with that?", but the
customer CAN say "I love these effin french fries, what do you put on
them?"  After the customer has started with that, the server may be able
to slip in an F word, but can't overuse it.

Eff word etiquette I guess.

Once in a while we run into a salty character but it is rare.  I had a

Found it unusual.  I thought it was pretty impolite as my wife was
sitting right next to me as he was behaving this way.  I have known
this guy for a long time and never witnessed this behavior before.
I mentioned it to a friend that reps products that other company
carries.  He was shocked.  Had never seen that guy behave like that
either.  He then mentioned it to one of the bosses at the
distributorship and I had an instant apology. I was not asking for
one.  I was not trying to get the guy in trouble.  But they all took
it very seriously.
Again, this could be a local Utah thing, but when I ran my
manufacturing business in Quincy, Ill we never had this happen there
either.  There was one guy named Bob that worked for Harris Broadcast
that was foul mouthed and everyone in town talked about him.  But that
was about it.
Maybe I give off a “don’t f with me” vibe or something. I don’t
consider myself puritanical or a prude.  But I don’t think foul

And I doubt it ever happens again. I actually feel sorry for him having my
comment get back to him.

When you are on a camp out with your huntin’ buddies it is expected. Or out
drinking all night. Or starring in an action adventure movie (when did this
become a thing). Guess I need to go watch “Team America” again to get my ears
toughened up.

I watch sales reps, that's the course correction I'm looking at, they're
chameleons, I've kind of gotten to a point where it's a game of curiosity, like
trying to figure out bot scripts in yahoo chat back in the day (type the word
human, bot, or real and the response will be that they're not a bot, etc)
I dont know if our industry rep software is the same as nail salons, but their
software has detail cards on each client to remember their details, family,
pets, etc including their general disposition.

I've found few reps that will swear right off the bat, but most dont. But if
you slipped in a swear word, theyll slip in a swear word. If you go off on a
crossword holiday, theyll go full sailor. The funnest game is to get godly
between communications, and see how they correct course. So one phone call,
drop some S and F bombs. Then the next call dont, and mention a church sermon.
I've found they test the swear waters with an Ass.
I assume they try to align their persona with a customers persona to make a
customer comfortable dropping coin.

Chucks experience is an odd one, to be honest I dont think I'd do business with
that rep again if he didnt have products worth looking at.

That's business relations though. A mailing list is a mailing list. People have
a hard time keeping things threaded to filter out noise. I try to keep my noise

What do I do to make sure the addresses are not black listed etc. Have never
been through this before.
Message
Hello,

Your request for IPv4 addresses has been completed. Please note that in
accordance with ARIN policy 4.1.8, your organization may not request additional
IPv4 addresses from ARIN for 90-days from today's date.

You may review the new registration by:

- clicking on "Tickets" in the "Account Manager" navigation bar,
- click on the ticket number, and
- click on the "Net Handle" listed in the "Request Details" section of the
ticket information.

To add reverse DNS delegation, click the "Actions" button then "Manage Reverse
DNS". To add a DS Record to a delegation, select "Modify DS Records" from the
"Manage Reverse DNS" page. For more information on DNSSEC, please visit:

https://www.arin.net/resources/manage/dnssec/

Your organization must register all reassignments of 8 contiguous IP addresses
or more to downstream customers via a publicly accessible Whois database within
7 days of all assignments per the guidelines at:

https://www.arin.net/resources/registry/reassignments/

In accordance with the criteria outlined in the "Number Resource Policy Manual"
(NRPM), your organization will be unable to transfer any IPv4 resources under
an "8.3 Transfers between Specified Recipients within the ARIN Region" or an
"8.4 Inter-RIR Transfer to Specified Recipients" to another organization for a
period of 12-months. For more information please review the NRPM at:

https://www.arin.net/participate/policy/nrpm/#8-3-transfers-between-specified-recipients-within-the-arin-region

If you have an RPKI certificate issued by ARIN, please note that the new
network has not been added to your certificate. If you would like it to be,
simply open a new ticket via ASK ARIN, and let us know you'd like to certify
the new network. We'll then update the certificate for you.

Ticket 20201012-X712650 is now closed.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: FBI just don’t see a need for that stuff here. Too polarizing
and to easy to offend folks. Just like vax/anti vax conversation. Some folks
are very passionate about that too. Ditto religion. No need here. Go on
other forums.

(Except when you are talking to Steve. In that case you can say anything you
want...)

We can talk trash to each other all day when it is just good sport, but when
you touch on real subjects feelings can get permanently damaged. We need each
other as technical resources. And when you really need help you don’t want
some guy that actually knows the exact answer holding back because he deems you
to be an a$$hole due to some political position you had proffered in the past.

That's the real problem. I've come to the conclusion that almost no so-called news having anything to do with politics is honest or reliable, no matter which side it comes from. Almost all of it is slanted (if not outright dishonest) to either fit their own view or manipulate their consumers into supporting a particular agenda. That's different from what I was thinking about. The F-word is
almost universal in its usage. It can be a noun, a verb, and
adjective, and adverb, you name it. It can also just be an
expletive peppered in a sentence for effect. I don't appreciate
  that sort of usage.
However, for someone who doesn't pepper their language with it,
it can provide a very effective underline in a way.
I do recall a place my parents took us almost every summer for
vacation. The fellow who ran the operation, Glibert Norman, was
known by all the kids as "Jeepers" because his language was just
filled with the phrase "jeepers creepers", or "by jeepers
creepers". I learned after I was old enough that when there were
no kids in his presence, other, more "adult" words were used in
place of the "jeepers". Kind of a fond memory in fact. All the
kids loved him. I wonder what the parents thought? I bet they were
uncomfortable when it was only adults in earshot, but I also bet
they appreciated that he'd figured out a way to not tick them off
by talking that way in front of the kids.

You can use it for 10 servers. But it still won't do certain things that
make managing all of them easy.

2021-01-08 Thread Steven Kenney
Oh the combo.. couldn't help you there :) Proxmox looks cool.. but still
doesn't have the features Vmware does. But I hear now there is some pretty good
xen material out there now. It has advanced much further than it used to be.
Trying to find the link but the manager you need to pay for but its a fraction
of Vmware.

Ive been running vmware and veeam forever, i love it, but we are getting priced
out of continuing to use it. upgrading either is always a cumbersome task.
Having been using what is probably the simplest virtualization/backup combo out
there I'm guessing anything we move to will have a massive learning curve for

What combos are out there that dont break the bank and are reliable as this?

Re: [AFMUG] OT: FB

2021-01-08 Thread Colin Stanners
One good thing is that AFMUG's main purpose/topic is understood by
everyone. I don't filter out all OT posts as some
relatively-WISP/FISP-unrelated technical topics are useful.

But most political threads, as others have said, don't result in much
useful change or new information in the end. Everyone's opinions are
already pretty solidified. Instead of creating many new mailing list
filters or categories, I think it'd be better avoided altogether once
conversations start or become too political.

Many times I want to post about something that is peripherally
related to the industry. However, it may not be direct; Starlink
news might be one of those. That is safely OT, and if someone
thinks it isn't, then fine. No harm, no foul.
However, I also know personally many of the people on this list,
and it is helpful to me to hear what they have to say. Sometimes
that dips into politics. I don't want to lose those friends.

Putting in filters for off topic items should be a no brainer for
each and every individual on this list. Perhaps a different tag
for such topics? Maybe WOT (Way Off Topic), or NSFW, or POL as a
prefix? Is that like having your cake and eating it too?
