[AFMUG] Starlink speeds dip already

2021-03-03 Thread Dev
Already hearing from folks who have the service that they’re seeing dips below
15Mbps, and this at light loads with few customers, we’ll see how this scales.
Or doesn’t. Are others in different geographies seeing similar?

Starlink *BETA* . Maybe they're simulating load of a few hundred, or a
thousand, customers on each bird to prepare for when it's actually busy.
(based on the "20Gbps" capacity per sat)

Considering the amount of effort and design that goes into such a massive
and complex system, people should be thankful that it's working with a
good-enough uptime right now.

Until they get the constellation fleshed out; probably after 2021 (maybe
mid 2022?), I would not put too much credence in any numbers, big or small.

[AFMUG] RJ45 crimpers

2021-03-03 Thread Carl Peterson
We currently use 2061 dies in regular crimp frames. Debating buying new
dies vs moving to something else. Looking for something as tech-proof as
possible that doesn't rely on them knowing how much to squeeze. Any
favorites out there? Any favorites on Shielded RJ45s? We currently use
the Netonix ones.

We have been seeing a lot more ethernet cabling issues as of late. Trying
to figure out why that is and prevent it.

100% Shireen smartfeed connectors. I think they made the tool, too. It
nearly eliminated our rj45/cat5 problems. At least 99% resolved I'd say.

We tried Arc/Ubnt/Netonix in the past.

I've been using the Ubiquiti shielded connectors for a few years, no
issues. For crimpers I've been using the platinum tools racheting ez-rj45
model - it works just fine with standard (non-ez-rj45) connectors as well.
If you've got some fairly inexperienced folks out there the pass through
connectors might be a decent idea. They make no difference for me
personally though.

It nearly eliminated our rj45/cat5 problems. At least 99% resolved I'd
 say.

We tried Arc/Ubnt/Netonix in the past.

Re: [AFMUG] Favorite high capacity 11Ghz XPIC backhaul

2021-03-03 Thread Mathew Howard
I'd agree with that. If one 80mhz XPIC is all that's available, it's hard
to beat Aviat.

But if you have two adjacent channels available, you can close to double
the capacity with the Bridgewaves. If I remember correctly, SIAE can do the
same thing, but it'll cost quite a bit more.

Every RJ45 mentioned in this thread so far actually come from the same
factory, we buy them from the factory direct in bulk. If you can buy 1,000
pcs or more and want to save a bit hit me off the list.

Re: [AFMUG] RJ45 crimpers

2021-03-03 Thread Carl Peterson
Thanks TJ,

I am more interested in repeatable quality than saving a bit on a connector
that is .39 at Streakwave but if they really are the same I might be
interested down the road. I've know the Shireen guys since they started,
they are right down the road from our Baltimore office, and they have
always been really good about QC. I kind of like the idea of using their
cable and connector. Any issues and I can just drop off a bag of cut off
ends and ask them to figure out what the issue is.

Fanboy testing I'm sure. I'm positive they will generally be 100m + in
production if you don't have obstructions. Post "install" issues is going
to be the real issue.

What technology do you utilize to deliver a 100+ mbps to residential subs? Or
is that not what they will offer when beta is done?

Starlink *BETA* . Maybe they're simulating load of a few hundred, or a
thousand, customers on each bird to prepare for when it's actually busy. (based
on the "20Gbps" capacity per sat)

Considering the amount of effort and design that goes into such a massive
and complex system, people should be thankful that it's working with a
good-enough uptime right now.

Re: [AFMUG] Starlink speeds dip already

2021-03-03 Thread Steve Jones
what part of beta dont people understand? is it because general consumers
are getting beta and dont actually know what beta is? this is the same
reason we make people cut trees down now BEFORE we install. we used to just
install and tell them to cut it. but too many people complained about
exactly what we told them would happen happening.

I have faith in starlink, I think in 5 years it will be a whole other
landscape. Musk seems like one of those guys who thrives on detractors and
proving people wrong.

But regardless, beta is beta

most of our aviat is xpic, no real issues to note. price is sketchy cheap,
i sometimes think that we arent actually buying from aviat and that ken
rupple just keeps stealing stuff off their trucks and selling it to us. I
dont care, best set of speakers i ever had came of the back of a truck. We
have 8 links we bought last year. we are running out of sites to put them
at.

But if you have two adjacent channels available, you can close to
double the capacity with the Bridgewaves. If I remember correctly, SIAE can
do the same thing, but it'll cost quite a bit more.

what is the user interface for aviat like? i assume useable and easy since
a lot of you like them. we are used to SAF which has been rock solid.

what speeds are the radios pushing in an 80Mhz channel pair?

There did seem to be a lot of venting on the way up & down. It also looked
to me like it had a slight list to port when it was sitting on the landing

2021-03-03 Thread Robert
If you watch the SpaceX video, it actually looked like there was a very
slight bounce when it "landed"  They called it a soft landing but it
looked just barely soft enough to not disassemble when it first touched
down... Sure looked like a lot of fuel was left over...

The UI is very easy and functional. The networking config is dead simple.
A bit slow, but it's being fixed in a new firmware.

Re: [AFMUG] Favorite high capacity 11Ghz XPIC backhaul

2021-03-03 Thread Joseph.Schraml

SIAE has that capability with our ALFOPlus2XG radios. Change the branching unit
from an OMT to a hybrid, and this radio can do ACCP,, i.e. 2xV or 2xH.

We also have many customers using these radios in a 4+0 configuration which
yields almost 3 Gbps in two XPIC (2xV + 2xH) channels.

Not sure about costing a bit moreour radios are very competitive to the
other dual-core radios on the market today.

Thanks,

I'd agree with that. If one 80mhz XPIC is all that's available, it's hard to
beat Aviat.

But if you have two adjacent channels available, you can close to double the
capacity with the Bridgewaves. If I remember correctly, SIAE can do the same
thing, but it'll cost quite a bit more.

I think the first iterations through at least SN10 or SN11 were intended to
be expendable. From what I've read, they are skipping SN12-SN14, and SN15
will be an updated design.

We shall see. So far it's been entertaining for all of us teenagers that
like to see things blow up.

Re: [AFMUG] Favorite high capacity 11Ghz XPIC backhaul

2021-03-03 Thread Steve Jones
It's like 10x faster in microsoft edge than in chrome, same with aviat
store.
You get 1.4 GB on 80 mhz. Comparable to the integra x. The latency is a
magnitude higher, about half a millisecond, almost negligible.
The interface is much more intuitive and user friendly than SAF, that's not
a SAF bash at all, we would still be running SAF and bought a ton of SAF
last year if Ken hadn't sold us all those radios of the truck so cheap.

No VAR channel is really something you need to be prepared for if you're
accustomed to it. It's not that they dont have decent sales, but it is a
self service design. You need to ask a lot of questions and the store is
getting better. It still has way too much stuff with no description. If the
third party stuff had mfg part numbers it would be better to be able to go
reference.
Doing the license stuff through commsearch directly is a learning
experience in itself, that was something the VAR handled for us before. But
it's worth learning anyway. I really didnt understand what I thought I did,
I thought we were licensing links. Nope, transmitters. It made it way
easier to comprehend when we had to sign off on bucking (I think that's
what they called it) we caused ourselves having so many links in proximity.

I still think SAF is a taller product by a pinch, aviat was close enough
that it came to cost and really nothing else.
It's also layer1 aggregation which is hawt, our integras and lumina were
not, that's a pita, but I believe integrax is

we just email Liz @ intelipath about where we need a link, she tells us
what's available, I can login and order a link on the aviat store in ten

Re: [AFMUG] Favorite high capacity 11Ghz XPIC backhaul

2021-03-03 Thread Steve Jones
Im.not complaining, I prefer the store, but if you're accustomed to var
doing all that stuff there is a curve, especially if theres an issue with a
path.
I call a var, I say I need a link from x coordinate to y coordinate, router
port to router port. I get back a quote. I approve the quote. I wait for my
gear. 2 calls or emails.

The difference is I have to wait on the VAR. The quote is only good for a
period. With self serve it's nice, run a path in their tool, meet my 9s,
export it and send it to commsearch. When they submit it I can order at
whim, including at 3am. I really like that. But it does take more steps. I
missed a detail on a copolar link, didnt realize at the time I needed a
coupler radio, not an OMT.
Went to prep the install and couldnt configure both channels. Got angry and
took it out on aviat.
Ultimately I had to submit an FCC modification since the model number
changed, that's somewhat pricey.

Difference here is the cost was all on me, through a VAR they would have
eaten the FCC cost. But the price difference with VAR markup would have
cost me more than the self service and the self correction.

This was a cluster because it wasnt a standard sub band so the new
equipment had to actually be built to order.

These are just some of the things that can happen without a VAR.

I really love the preterm fiber options though.

You can always double check your order with Ken before placing it. I did
that and asked many questions to be sure I was ordering the right stuff.

I consider Ken to be the VAR for aviat being he works for them. He's very
responsive and helpful.

The UI is very easy and functional. The networking config is dead
simple. A bit slow, but it's being fixed in a new firmware.

I did that in the beginning, I like that about them. But not a var, hence
the liability on me

It's like 10x faster in microsoft edge than in chrome, same with aviat
 store.
You get 1.4 GB on 80 mhz. Comparable to the integra x. The latency is a
magnitude higher, about half a millisecond, almost negligible.
The interface is much more intuitive and user friendly than SAF, that's
not a SAF bash at all, we would still be running SAF and bought a ton of
SAF last year if Ken hadn't sold us all those radios of the truck so cheap.

No VAR channel is really something you need to be prepared for if
you're accustomed to it. It's not that they dont have decent sales, but it
is a self service design. You need to ask a lot of questions and the store
is getting better. It still has way too much stuff with no description. If
the third party stuff had mfg part numbers it would be better to be able to
 go reference.

I still think SAF is a taller product by a pinch, aviat was close
enough that it came to cost and really nothing else.
It's also layer1 aggregation which is hawt, our integras and lumina
were not, that's a pita, but I believe integrax is
