I always loved the error message:
Unauthorized (401)
Through a series of highly sophisticated and complex algorithms, this
system has determined that you are not presently authorized to use
this system function. It could be that you simply mistyped a password,
or, it could be that you are some sort of interplanetary alien-being
that has no hands and, thus, cannot type. If I were a gambler, I would
bet that a cat (an orange tabby named Sierra or Harley) somehow jumped
onto your keyboard and forgot some of the more important pointers from
those typing lessons you paid for. Based on the actual error
encountered, I would guess that the feline in question simply forgot
to place one or both paws on the appropriate home keys before
starting. Then again, I suppose it could have been a keyboard error
caused by some form of cosmic radiation; this would fit nicely with my
interplanetary alien-being theory. If you think this might be the
cause, perhaps you could create some sort of underground bunker to
help shield yourself from it. I don’t know that it will work, but, you
will probably feel better if you try something.

Re: [AFMUG] Spectrum Analyzer...old school

2021-04-06 Thread Chuck McCown via AF
The canopy crew was much more fun back in those days. They would invite me to
Schaumberg and visit with the engineers. Show them my stinger prototypes etc.
They gave me canvas software to do special things in the transmitter and even
let me do FCC type approval work alongside them in the same labs. Things were
great. Tom Hulsebosch and the other Tom (Gruba?) were super great at working
with the channel partners and fanning all the flames.

Chuck Macenski would stick his neck out time and time again to help everyone.

Then, I can only presume, someone in Mot HQ decided to step in and “help” this
group of “loose cannons” turn things into a proper Motorola division or
something. I only know that once Tom and Tom were gone I got bupkis by the way
of support and collaboration. I could name a couple of guys that actively
worked against me. Hope karma bit them in the balls eventually.

I always loved the error message:

Unauthorized (401)
Through a series of highly sophisticated and complex algorithms, this system
has determined that you are not presently authorized to use this system
function. It could be that you simply mistyped a password, or, it could be that
you are some sort of interplanetary alien-being that has no hands and, thus,
cannot type. If I were a gambler, I would bet that a cat (an orange tabby named
Sierra or Harley) somehow jumped onto your keyboard and forgot some of the more
important pointers from those typing lessons you paid for. Based on the actual
error encountered, I would guess that the feline in question simply forgot to
place one or both paws on the appropriate home keys before starting. Then
again, I suppose it could have been a keyboard error caused by some form of
cosmic radiation; this would fit nicely with my interplanetary alien-being
theory. If you think this might be the cause, perhaps you could create some
sort of underground bunker to help shield yourself from it. I don’t know that
it will work, but, you will probably feel better if you try something.

Update: Just heard from the DNR. An egg-less nest is not protected.
However, they encourage you not to remove the nest unless there are no
other options. Once the nest is active (with egg or young birds) then
there are restrictions on climbing. Restrictions are based on what stage
the egg/birds are in. This stage may require permits as well - we didn't
get into that. This DNR biologist wants a max disruption of 2 hours
during the active nest stage. So she encourages spreading the work out
over weeks with short periods on the tower.
So I will be climbing ASAP. During my work, I'll install a camera
pointing at the nest so we know exactly what stage the nest is in. Plus
a camera is a nice gesture to the DNR, one they are giddy about.
Once I got a hold of the DNR biologist, they were very helpful and
accommodating.

egg but the egg had a hole in it so they took pictures and sent to

egg in the nest he was fine to take the whole nest down. He said he
threw it all off and put an orange cone up there which has kept them

I wouldn't want it coming after me even if I were on the ground let
alone a ladder! Most birds will defend their nest. Get an outdoor
speaker, mount it as close as you can get it to the nest and play a
looped recording of a yapping chihuahua. Birds don't stay around
where they can't listen and talk to each other, even anti-social
ones like raptors I think wouldn't like it. These are a world-wide
species, why is it protected?

Google kung-fu led me to a NATE presentation that says that
climbing can be done with precautions. Talked to the tower owner
(a small private owner, not one of the big three) who suggested
adding a ring below the platform with the nest for the new PTPs.
Can this be done with the birds on the tower?

Re: [AFMUG] Osprey on towers

Always nice to have giddy regulatory authorities than pissy ones.

Update: Just heard from the DNR. An egg-less nest is not protected. However,
they encourage you not to remove the nest unless there are no other options.
Once the nest is active (with egg or young birds) then there are restrictions
on climbing. Restrictions are based on what stage the egg/birds are in. This
stage may require permits as well - we didn't get into that. This DNR biologist
wants a max disruption of 2 hours during the active nest stage. So she
encourages spreading the work out over weeks with short periods on the tower.
So I will be climbing ASAP. During my work, I'll install a camera pointing at
the nest so we know exactly what stage the nest is in. Plus a camera is a nice
gesture to the DNR, one they are giddy about.
Once I got a hold of the DNR biologist, they were very helpful and
accommodating.

talked to him about it. The DNR guy said that if there are no eggs he was fine
to tear it down but if there are eggs he needed to wait till they hatched and
left before tearing it down. He had his nephew climb up and there was an egg
but the egg had a hole in it so they took pictures and sent to the DNR. The
DNR said that the birds often puncture their own eggs trying to move them
around in the nest but since that was the only egg in the nest he was fine to
take the whole nest down. He said he threw it all off and put an orange cone
up there which has kept them off so far. As mentioned earlier, there are
federal and state regulations so your mileage may vary depending on how your
state (or possibly even who you talk to at the state).

I wouldn't want it coming after me even if I were on the ground let alone a
ladder! Most birds will defend their nest. Get an outdoor speaker, mount it
as close as you can get it to the nest and play a looped recording of a yapping
chihuahua. Birds don't stay around where they can't listen and talk to each
other, even anti-social ones like raptors I think wouldn't like it. These are
a world-wide species, why is it protected?

email into the state DNR but no response yesterday and today being a gov
holiday I don't expect a response until next week. Kinda freaking out here. I
need to mount a few PTP links. I was planning on a climb today, but am holding
off to hear definitively. This is the main tower for my WISP.

Google kung-fu led me to a NATE presentation that says that climbing can be
done with precautions. Talked to the tower owner (a small private owner, not
one of the big three) who suggested adding a ring below the platform with the
nest for the new PTPs. Can this be done with the birds on the tower?

Has anyone dealt with Ospreys before?

I've been using CWDM which overlaps that. I hadn't looked at DWDM.

DWDM C band is 1525-1565 which would overlap.

DWDM L band is 1570-1625.so yeah I guess a DWDM MUX that only
touched L-Band might pass GPON through. Maybe I've been looking at it
through the wrong lens.

Re: [AFMUG] Who is going to WISPAMERICA?

2021-04-06 Thread Robert
One point, there is no "time to mutate" False science begets false
knowledge.   The virus mutates based upon number of copies made.   So
higher infection rates ( Like getting everybody infected to reach herd
immunity via infection ) produces more mutations, regardless of time
frame.   And going that route in April of last year would have given us
a host of mutations with no vaccine.   Yep you could have killed a full
million by October on that route.   So don't mind if I ignore your
"science" from here on out...
The mask debacle was a mistake.   They should have trusted people
with the truth, because they fought the battle against mask hoarders
even with the false narrative.   They should have said even non-n95
masks make a difference, BUT THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT. Took research and
rediscovering what they knew way back when to figure it out again.

First they said masks wouldn't work, you'd need a bare minimum of a
N95 so don't bother.  Then they said wear the mask,  now you need to
wear 3.   This is a clown show.  It is time to try a different way.
The quickest way to immunity and return to normal life.   If you do
anything that prolongs that from happening you are clearly advocating
for big pharma and the medical community to now be our new governing

Re: [AFMUG] Who is going to WISPAMERICA?

2021-04-06 Thread Steven Kenney
By all means take any precaution you wish. People at risk should. But don't
impose your beliefs on others. If you see a non mask wearer - stay away from
them. Go ahead and live your life in fear. The way things are going right now,
this will never end. We tried your way, it didn't work, it didn't even make a
dent on the numbers. In fact it bought the virus time to mutate and make things
worse.

First they said masks wouldn't work, you'd need a bare minimum of a N95 so
don't bother. Then they said wear the mask, now you need to wear 3. This is a
clown show. It is time to try a different way. The quickest way to immunity and
return to normal life. If you do anything that prolongs that from happening you
are clearly advocating for big pharma and the medical community to now be our
new governing body.

[AFMUG] What do you wish you knew about small business?

2021-04-06 Thread Matt Hoppes

I've been struck by several things:

1) How terrible a lot of small business development courses are
2) How many small business owners don't fully understand how to make the
most of their business.

With that in mind:
https://www.facebook.com/everyoneplunges/posts/1397379503939932

Not specific to WISP (such as, I wish I knew how to climb towers better,
I wish I knew how to align a radio better), but rather - business
operations. What are some "AHA!" moments you've had, or struggles you
currently experience that you wish you could overcome?

Re: [AFMUG] Who is going to WISPAMERICA?

2021-04-06 Thread Steven Kenney
Take that percentage into consideration the amount of people who actually get
it that die or have some lingering issues. Not to mention there is little to no
evidence or statistics that the masks or the lockdowns have prevented or even
hindered the spread. It certainly has eliminated the regular flu and all other
similar ailments!

This is a situation I think that we'll need to rip the bandaid off and go on
with our lives. Those who are at high risk should take precautions. The quicker
we develop this immunity as a human race, the better off we are in the long
run.

People here and relatives I've talked to all across North America are all fed
up and had enough of this nonsense. It is only a matter of time before people
stop abiding and it will take some serious orwellian jackboots to get people to
"conform". The kool aid is running out and we'll start to see more and more
states start going the way of Texas.

Disclaimer: It is a nasty and deadly cold and people should take precautions to
protect themselves.

Dallas county (2.6 million people) has 300 cases a day (as of April 4th).

Quick math says that’s 0.01% of the population has covid.

That's practically non-existent.

Texas: I'd be going to Dallas.

Pennsylvania: I'm no where near Philly or Pittsburgh.

My County has about 34 new cases per day.

2021-04-06 Thread Jan-GAMs
The current population of Texas is 28.996 million, the current number of
Texans fully vaccinated as of last Monday(apr5) is 4,561,336 and the as
of last Monday 16,653,045 Texans have received 1 dose.  That appears to
me to be immunity in action.

How can a county of 2.6 million have 300 cases a day but a county
of 110,000 has 34-50 new cases a day?
