Yah. I think I turned on linux on the first day. One checkbox and you're
in. Really like the instant on, and it is remarkably quick. Battery lasts
all day, and then some. I have not been stymied on anything I need to do.

I've also been chromebooking for a few weeks as well and am quite happy
(coming from a macbook pro). I really like the combo of chrome + android
apps + linux. It is a little rough around the edges on some apps/tasks but
for how old the OS is, it really is pretty good.

Reminds me of Blade Runner, and the lifespan programmed into replicants.

I don't recommend getting an all-in-one PC-monitor as you have limited monitor
size options, and if anything breaks inside, you're extremely limited in what
you can use to fix it.

I recommend just getting a mini-PC and hiding it behind the monitor. Some can
even run on 12V (may want to put power regulation in the power path depending
on how stable the source is). From where do you usually buy PCs?

Re: [AFMUG] OT Being lazy

2019-01-12 Thread Ken Hohhof
For office computers I have some of the little Lenovo SFF PCs that go on the
back of the monitor. They have been reliable and can be redeployed for any
general purpose office computer application, but I think they cost a lot more
than what you are looking at. The only think I don’t like about them is the
built in speakers are weak.

Windows still costs more than that; Microsoft is practically giving the
small-device versions of Windows away as they want to ward off Linux/Android.

It should already have Bluetooth, in which case you can buy a BT keyboard and
mouse and the guys don't need to worry about wires getting caught during
movement and damaged (as long as they don't lose those peripherals...)

I don't recommend getting the 2GB RAM version as it is quite limiting, but you
can see that the 4GB version is still a great deal at $140 USD, and it should
be fast enough for most general PC use. And according to pictures it runs on 5V
so you can just get a 12V->5V regulator (I'm assuming that it uses maybe 6
Amps?) to run it without an AC inverter. You may need to do a bit more research
to find a monitor that runs off DC.

Chuck,

I have one of those sitting on my desk running the dude client attached to a HDMI monitor.  I was worried about how long it would last, but I'm going on 3 years now of 24/7 running.  Not the fastest thing out there, but if it is going to basically be doing web searches it should be fine.

I have not bought a PC for years, as in me personally. I just tell others I
need something and it appears. So not really sure. A mini PC would work fine.
 12 VDC would be great.
