Re: [AFMUG] Solar panels

2022-07-11 Thread Mathew Howard
I think they come from solar farms. They must replace whole sections if
they get damaged, or something like that.

A lot of them say they have the labels removed, so they can't be used for
grid-tie, but for off-grid projects, I can't see any obvious reason why
it'd be a bad idea, other than that they're presumably going to have a
shorter lifespan than new ones.

Is it age from production, or age in use? I assume the shelf life is
indefinite. Aside from technology change, is age a matter of elemental
exposure or is there components that degrade?

The max on the quantity was 27 I think. And the shipping cost was not that
much more.
So the shipping probably jumps when you fill one full pallet. But it is
pretty flat until you get there.

Re: [AFMUG] solar panels

2021-06-04 Thread Mathew Howard
It seems like it should be relatively simple to build a test setup where
you could just shine some kind of a light on it, and measure the output
compared to a new panel... whether or not it would be worth the bother for
anybody to do that, is another matter.

My Father-in-law works at a lab at Cornell where they wanted a number of
panels with all exactly the same efficiency for a research project.  Not
