With that tree scenario, do you still feel you’re protected from
interference in unlicensed spectrum, or if others start using the band, will
you be screwed with those signal levels?

In a situation where the customer is buried in trees, I figure the trees
will probably block most interference, but upstream may be vulnerable. If
it’s a “forest town” as you describe, are you counting on CBRS and the
spectrum database to protect against interference?

Maybe one tree up close, say 50-100 feet, is, as you describe, probably not
much of an issue. Sure, you can call this NLOS.

A cluster of trees a 1/4, 1/2 or a mile away, maybe you can't really see the
tower, I still consider enough LOS for RF wavelength. We do these kinds of
shots with PMP450 today and it works fine. This is what I'd call good nuf
LOS aka near-LOS. As Ken says, sometimes this can actually improve the
signal. Clip that fresnel zone just right and you can get a boost. And we
did find that -/+45 does help a bit for these kinds of shots.

The NLOS I'm talking about is an entire town full of trees. All up in your
face. Even surrounding the tower. A forest town. Where 900 barely works. A
place where we're considering doing fiber instead (preferably in the ground
so we don't get that other kind of "tree fade"). That's what we're dealing
with. It is nuckin futs. The power levels we're seeing really does not
surprise me. Leaves are coming down too. Should've had it up a month ago.

BTW, we're doing 10MHz channel width. There's too much other gear around to
try to get away with 20MHz.

Aggregate. The guys were out with one CPE moving around. The -115 RSRP
location was giving about 140ms latency. From what I heard anyway. Doesn't
surprise me seeing as how the uplink bandwidth was pretty much nothing.

We're going to try switching a couple customers from 900 FSK over to this

So far we're seeing no better than about -88 RSRP. Most places we tested was
right around -100. All Non-LOS. Very Non-LOS. Within a mile. And the nitwits
didn't get my memo that I wanted to collect CINRs and mod rates too. They
were able to still get about 7Mbps down (less than 50kbps up tho) with about
a -115 RSRP. And I did double check that we're not exceeding the 1W/MHz EIRP
cap. We're going to do some more testing tomorrow.

is TVWS still a thing? I thought it was hanging out with the Edsel

On my original post, going through each customer, there was a marked
increase in usage overall, people coming in as it got cold, that combined
with the increased noise floor (cooler weather, corn buffer being gone) and
whatever was going on in the atmosphere and too many poor installs, it was
a perfect storm that should have been expected. pulling all the heavy users
off to other systems, downtilting APs, and lowering the maximum rate sold
on this system after doing the fresh coordination and implementing some of
the recomendations on configs seems to have brought it to manageable
disaster.

Rumor is Rise is "upgrading" around Thanksgiving in the area. I would like
to see how baicell performs when that environment shows up. What is the
deal on the 1W and 10W base station with baicells?

2016-10-13 Thread Ken Hohhof
Or don’t donate anything, and pay no tax! Sorry, I know this is a non
political thread (unless you view Apple vs Android as a political culture war).
But I am struck that it was a scandal that Mitt Romney only paid 14% income
tax, giving him no credit for tithing to his church (and don’t forget the
charity boxing match!) Yet now we have someone who apparently does neither,
and he’s a genius.

Meanwhile, I’ve got an old vehicle to donate, and am wondering if those
cars-for-kids deals are for real or just scams. Maybe better to just take it
to the auto wrecker and then donate the cash?

Re: [AFMUG] i need an adult

2016-10-13 Thread Ken Hohhof
I remember in my area Rise registered hundreds and hundreds of bogus 3.65 APs
right before the FCC deadline. I don’t know if that was just here or
nationwide.

If they are expecting to roll out 3.65 LTE up here, they are in for a surprise,
there is significant 3.65 already deployed in both lower and upper 25 MHz, by
WISPs and others like ComEd. Aren’t they using a different LTE vendor from
Baicells, like maybe ZTE or Huawei? But those -100 signal levels aren’t going
to be of much use in mostly open farmland with lots of Ubiquiti and Cambium
already around.

Forest of trees seems like TVWS would have a better chance than anything in the

The objection to something like Exede satellite (other than a few areas with no
spot beams) is if I stream more than a couple movies per week, I go over my
data cap unless I watch in the middle of the night.

Can you really say TVWS solves that problem? Especially since satellite will
probably continue to evolve and push up their data caps?

Personally, I don't see what's so terrible about setting the DVR on your sat TV
or using the original Netflix DVD by mail service, if you want to live in the
middle of nowhere. But obviously I'm out of step with the times. To quote
Louis CK, "everything's amazing, nobody's happy". TVWS should be fine, but
nobody's going to be happy with it, now that the Internet has been subverted to
be the cheap entertainment superhighway. (Did Doug Clark trademark that term?)

So you mean like Vonage? That would get you out of filing 477 but not 499, and
once you start filing 499, you will get assessed TRS and NANP fees, unless

Yes you can probably fly under the radar, but I get scared that FCC will decide

Something like that. IANAL either, but I think there are still lots of people
flying under the radar on this issue. If the underlying carrier is doing the
taxes and USF and such then there might not be any red flag there where
somebody would notice.

That doesn't mean your compliant with the law and it doesn't mean the correct
taxes are being paid.

I did learn at one point that if your USF contributions total less than $10,000
/ year that you're a "de minimus" provider and you're just supposed to keep the
money. You might want to look into getting it done rightThere must be a
level of volume where the legal and accounting expense is covered by the USF
fees you would have to collect.

We resell some SIP trunks with PBX we install on our contract services side. We
are not the SIP provider in any way, but we do get paid. if its traversing our
ISP network does that technically make us a voice provider, or are we still
able to hide out as an ISP

Re: [AFMUG] i need an adult

2016-10-13 Thread Adam Moffett
We tried out our Telrad LTE the other day. LOS from 4 miles was -88dbm
RSRP (which would be similar to -57 RSSI). Naturally we maxed out the
speed at that spot. The guy moved a hundred yards or so to
intentionally put some woods in the way. Through about a hundred foot
thick stand of trees we dropped to -113 RSRP (-82 RSSI). That gave us
5.5 to 6.0 mbps on a 5mhz channel.

Subsequent test locations gave us similar results.

This isn't bad. It's not magically piercing through the trees as some
sales people might lead you to believe, but it does do two things:
1) It functions (at lower and lower rates) all the way down to the noise
floor and a little under it.
2) You get relatively good performance with a relatively weak CINR.
What I mean here is that your wifi type thing (UBNT/ePMP) probably has a
lot of packet loss and inconsistent throughput when you have a CINR of
10, whereas LTE with CINR 10 actually seems pretty stable.

So yeah Ken, I guess I'm telling you what you already suspected. You
might be happy if you need to get through 50' to 100' of foliage. If
you need to go a mile through the woods you are still looking for
900mhz.

So far we're seeing no better than about -88 RSRP. Most places we
tested was right around -100. All Non-LOS. Very Non-LOS. Within a mile.
And the nitwits didn't get my memo that I wanted to collect CINRs and
mod rates too. They were able to still get about 7Mbps down (less than
50kbps up tho) with about a -115 RSRP. And I did double check that
we're not exceeding the 1W/MHz EIRP cap. We're going to do some more
testing tomorrow.

Also as the industry keeps getting bigger with things like WISP-PAC and
stuff there are more and more attorneys showing up and being needed for

proposing that these attorneys should only be allowed to charge hourly
rates based on how tall of a WISP tower they are willing to climb, so 100'
tower would be $100.00/per hour and so on lol

They have been working for awhile with various vendors to have different
mounting options. Not sure when each will be released though.

A $6000 link? I thought the AF11x was like $750-1k/side? What kind of
dishes are you planning on using?

Re: [AFMUG] Wispapalooza highlights

2016-10-13 Thread Eric Kuhnke
If the radios are $1500 for a pair...

Ultra high performance 4' 11 GHz dual polarity dishes are easily more than
$2000 a piece with shipping.

Plus FCC frequency coordination costs & FCC fees.

Plus surge protection, cables, and cost of labor/climbing to mount dishes.

And that's not even considering the possibility of $3300 6' 11 GHz dishes.

Why would you choose those radios to use with $6600 worth of dishes. That
seems like opening an expensive bottle of wine to drink with a peanut butter
and jelly sandwich.

Re: [AFMUG] Wispapalooza highlights

2016-10-13 Thread Eric Kuhnke
I wouldn't, but some people will. Installing and aiming a pair of 4' or 6'
dishes is the expensive part, but the dishes can be good for 20 years.
Radios can always be upgraded.

Even a pair of $1300 dishes + $1500 of radios + FCC coordination + misc
parts + climbing/mount expenses will easily bring a total to $6000.

Hey, I buy airFibers, and I eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But the
proper beverage with a PB&J is milk. With pizza, beer. And a fine wine goes
with SpaghettiOs.

If I remember correctly, our Mimosa B11 links worked out to just over $6k,
including everything (using 2' dishes)... since these radios are about $1k
cheaper per radio, I would guess the typical link won't be much over $4k.

Some will use this as an upgrade to their existing 11GHz links and

I believe the FCC site had a couple of dish models and vendors the
radio was working with...
