[AFMUG] Boots for climbing

2016-10-07 Thread Ben Royer
May have been a conversation of the past, but thought I’d throw it out for
discussion. What do all you tower climbers out there use for a work boot?
I’ve used Wolverine’s for awhile now and to me has been a pretty good pair of
boots. Durable and comfortable, seem to hold up on tower rungs and what not.
However, I’ve had this pair for a bit now, and am looking to buy a new pair,
but before I do, I’m curious as to what’s the best. I’m considering a steel
shank, steel toe, option, as my currents are only steel toe, but not sure if
it’s worth it. What say you, group?

Carolina Logger / Lineman boots.

Love them, wearing them right now in the data center because they're just
that comfortable despite having steel toe / shank. Waterproof, goretex
lined, etc. Awesome, awesome boots.

No real sign of wear other than some scuffs on the leather around the
toecap, despite having them for 2 years in Alaska climbing towers and
mountains.

I've had them going on 4 years now, and in the shape they are in look like
they would easily hold up another 4.

I wear Danner boots. They are decent boots, in the $100 range. They're no
lineman's boots, but they still hold up fairly well. I replace them every

No ankle protection, no footbed protection, not waterproof, no goretex..

No way I would climb icy towers like that in the winter. Summer? Maybe, but

Re: [AFMUG] Boots for climbing

2016-10-07 Thread chuck
I used to spend a good part of my day on steps driven into wooden telephone
poles.
I tried it when I first got hired with normal work boots, it killed me.
Steel shanks made it possible to continue to work there.

Awesome, great feedback guys. Yeah, Steel toe for sure, and I’m leaning
towards shank now also. Like Chuck was saying, work boots can do the job, but
standing up on a tower for a long time on a rung while your ground crew gets
their stuff together can be a whole different thing for longevity.

Like many of you I typically have sworn by the steel shank/steel toe work boots
for tower work... But as of the last couple years I have really started to move
toward the ultra-light approach. I find myself a lot less exhausted after a day
on the work site when I’ve removed loads of weight from my feet.

These are currently my tower shoe of choice:
https://www.scarpa.com/zen-pro-mid-gtx

They are scary light, but have enough support to not be an issue on ladders for
me. If I need to sit around on a rung for extended periods I always have the
integrated bosun chair on my harness to chill out on. I’ve used these for
inclement weather backpacking and done 20 mile days in these things without
discomfort or blisters.
