Josh,

He has thousands of pages. I don't have the time to scan those in so it's
probably cheaper to send them somewhere and have them scanned. We did that
years ago for my parents old photos instead of manually scanning them all.

It worked really well and they just sent back discs of the files.

You can rent a monster scanner that accepts 10k+ pages at once.  MOM is the
company I see used around here often.  If you're not worried about filing
them, breaking them out, etc you can just do one big PDF or say a PDF per
hundred pages or whatever.

sheet-fed mode is going to be huge money, unfortunately, most top loading
sheet fed scanners priced under $2,000 will have a max capacity of between
75 to 200.

It really depends on a few factors.. 

How may documents you have (1 or 2 thousand pages ? or 8-10 thousand pages ?) 
What kind of docs they are ? nice stacks of paper all of the same size, i.e. 
computer printouts ? Telcom Vendor Bills ? 
or are they odd sized pages with staples and paper clips etc... 

If you the are decently nice stacks of paper, with the right tool they become a 
cinch to deal with. 

We scanned our paper files inhouse, we purchased a high end canon scanner from 
the secondary market (this was a while back). The canon high end scanners do 
anti-gravity feed... i.e. they use rubber rollers and friction to pickup the 
papers and as such don't have paper jams... (look at the DR3080 or higher 
series... the usb ones are pretty easy to work with, stack 100 -200 pages and 
let it do it's thing...) 

You can do a neat pile of 1000 pages in no time.. 

There are plenty of folks who can scan the docs for you ..

I can’t imagine that much scanning  having much value unless it was organized 
in some logical manner that allowed you to find what  you are looking for after 
 the fact.
Or that each document is somehow indexed.  Just a bunch of pages with random 
character file names are not easy to search.

If you have a kid, grandkids, nephew, local highschooler looking for some
extra money, or even better somebody who has turned in an app when you
weren't hiring, this is a good piece rate gig, plus it gives you the
opportunity to vet a hire with no committment. If they can complete this
efficiently with a good standard of quality, they're worth consideration,
monotonous jobs are the best for testing mettle
