If you are a shortwave listener I advice you to download apps like simple
radio, tune in radio etc. Which are fairly accessible in both android and
ios devices. Some of the countries already stopped broadcasting on
shortwave metres. Now you don't get voice of America, ABC, Radio Mosco
and

many other stations in shortwave bands. There is no future for
conventional shortwave and medium wave radio stations.

The Manipur initiative: Education and freedom at a school for children
with disability

http://www.thehindu.com/features/magazine/The-Manipur-initiative-Education-and-freedom-at-a-school-for-children-with-disability/article16443835.ece
With imagination and heart, this school shows how to make the
participation of children with disabilities not an exception but the
rule

“My attitude is based on how you treat me,” reads a sticker outside
the school’s braille room. Inside, Pau, the braille instructor, and
his student, Elizabeth, both visually impaired, are spelling numbers.
Elizabeth reads aloud, “One Zero - Ten; Two Zero - Sixty!” Pau adjusts
the braille card and asks her to try again. At this, teachers next
door break into affectionate laughter, aware that Elizabeth, who
occasionally teases Pau, would soon give the right answer.

Across the airy corridor, in the physiotherapy room, Tina, a
five-year-old with cerebral palsy, is working on her balance. “Give me
a high five, Tina,” smiles Angie, the physiotherapist. Tina delights
at the clap of their palms, while balancing herself on her knees. It
is a weekly session that Tina refuses to miss, even if unwell.

In other classrooms, Tina’s friends are spelling alphabets into a
wooden mud-tray or learning nursery rhymes in sign language. Outdoors,
a group of children have encircled their favourite teacher, Thang.
They hug him, tug at his shirt and giggle naughtily as he jokes with
them.

Elizabeth, Tina and their friends are students at The Malsawm
Initiative, a school for children with disabilities in the tribal
district of Churachandpur, 60 km south of Manipur’s capital city,
Imphal. The school brings together children with various categories of
disabilities — be it autism, cerebral palsy, Hydrocephalus, Down’s
syndrome, hearing, visual and locomotor impairments.

For the current batch of 30 children, aged five to 14, who until a few
years ago were leading an overprotected and isolated life at home, the
school is a space with a promise of freedom — to learn, think, play,
make mistakes and not be judged. It combines education and therapeutic
care (physiotherapy, speech therapy and mobility training) such that
the children can develop their cognitive, communication, social and
daily living skills.

Dondouching and Pauzagin Tonsing founded the school in 2011, after a
six-year-long struggle to find a school where their son Malsawm could
study. A handsome boy with a sharp ear for music, Malsawm lost his
eyesight in 2005 to Optic Nerve Atrophy, a condition that impairs the
optic nerve.

“We thought if our son goes to school, he would start learning the
basics and his social skills would improve. But he was not learning
anything — the special schools in the town had more holidays than
working days and the teachers at the private school he attended were
clueless but too polite to kick him out,” says Malsawm’s mother,
Dondouching, who actually feels sorry for the teachers. “He needed
time and thought, but the teachers were only baby-sitting him; they
wanted to help but could not.”

Dejected, the couple pulled Malsawm out of school, enrolled themselves
for a distance-learning Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programme and
began meeting other parents. “At first the parents were reluctant and
ashamed to meet us since talking about disability was a taboo here,”
says Pauzagin, founder of the Churachandpur-based Centre for Community
Initiative (the parent organisation that set up the school). Pauzagin
discovered that most parents and caregivers had been living with a
sense of guilt, having internalised the social stigma associated with
birthing or raising a child with disability.

This changed with frequent meetings, where parents shed their
discomfort and formed a group to advocate for the rights of persons
with disabilities. This was before an educationist known for his love
of playgrounds for children, offered the couple a portion of his
school’s land for free. In response, the couple and parents of
fourteen other children, pooled in their faith and imagination to set
up The Malsawm Initiative (which initially was a one-room thatch and
bamboo structure, and today, is a yellow and red building amidst a
green thicket on a low-lying hill slope).

In the life of the school, the parents or caregivers of children with
disabilities have always played a pivotal role. Once, when a landslide
blocked roads around the school, parents and teachers formed a human
chain and cleared the rubble. Dondouching explains, “Children spend
the maximum time with their families. So we expect the caregivers to
be fully involved. We also encourage siblings to volunteer at the
school so that they can observe and learn from the teachers.”

At the same time, and in the absence of any state support for
disability-specific education, rehabilitation or information services,
the staff at the school is sensitive to the caregivers’ personal
circ

[Ai] Court Observation: "Supreme Court suggests special schools and teachers for children with special needs"

2017-10-30 Thread avinash shahi via Ai
I feel SC's observation is very critical cause it has specified the
categories of disability groups who have their distinct needs.
Thankfully it has not clubbed all categories as children with
disabilities as one unit where one or two types of disabilities enjoy
privileges and the rest remain on the margins. And the disability
sector needs to learn lesson from the observation. We should certainly
think whether 5 years old children with blindness/mental
disabilities/defness/autism are served better in 'inclusive schools'
in India? And when I say India it means delhi comes last in my
thoughts, you know. Census what if erroneous, informs us that around
69 per cent of people with disabilities reside in the villages.
Majority of so called inclusive schools are located in the faraway
hinterland and they lack basic physical infrastructure let alone
mindset. do we have classes in sign-language? Do all teachers of
different subjects know Braille? Do teachers and the non-teaching
staff understand what is autism and how to cater to the needs of those
children? I'm not talking about the peer mates whose ceaseless taunts
and disability slurs go unnoticed and perpetuated inside the campus of
'inclusive set up which leaves one traumatised for the entire life.
how many decades will it take to bring about sensitization. And why
the current generation of kids should suffer due to enapt teachers?
Why children with different disabilities should spend extra hours in
the so called 'inclusive school'? Why don't the children with
disabilities not encouraged to play sports in general in 'inclusive
schools'?for example, what if one 'inclusive school has only one blind
kid will she/he be able to play football or cricket with other class
mates? How his/her mobility needs will be catered to? legal and
ethical questions need to be brainstormed before reaching to a hasty
conclusion that schools which are pre-occupied with enrolment and
offer least substantive inclusion are the way forward. The debate over
inclusive vs specialized schools is too old to start it again. I
however welcome SC's observation which has sent a wave of uneasiness
among the propaganda machine of a particular ilk.

Deems it ‘impossible’ that those who have autism, blindness and
deafness can be taught along with normal children

The Supreme Court has questioned the lack of separate schools and
distinctly trained teachers for students who suffer from autism,
blindness and deafness.

The apex court observed that it is “impossible to think” that
children, who are disabled or suffer from any kind of disability or
are mentally challenged, can be imparted education in mainstream
schools along with normal children.

A Bench, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M.
Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud, said that access to education has now
been regarded as a fundamental right under Article 21A and there was a
statutory obligation on the States to provide education under the
Rights of Children to Free and Compulsary Education Act, 2009.

Treat them as special

“We are of the prima facie view that the children with special needs
have to be imparted education not only by special teachers but there
have to be special schools for them,” the Bench said.

It asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file an affidavit keeping its
observation in mind in four weeks and specify when the State is going
to meet the obligation. It listed the matter for further hearing on
November 27.

“When we say ‘disability’, we do not mean ‘disability’ as has been
defined in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. The
Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 includes certain
physical disabilities which may not be a warrant for getting admission
in special schools,” the bench said.

Emphasising the need for a separate system, the court said: “The
students who suffer from blindness, deafness and autism or such types
of disorder may be required to have separate schools with distinctly
trained teachers.”

The Bench was hearing a plea filed by Rajneesh Kumar Pandey through
advocate Prashant Shukla, claiming lack of sufficient number of
special educators in Uttar Pradesh and other States to teach the
children with special needs.

‘UP already on it’

Additional Advocate General Aishwarya Bhati appearing for Uttar
Pradesh said the State was committed to imparting education to the
children with special needs.

She said the State had already commenced the procedure for engaging
12,000 teachers, of whom some would be teachers for such special
children.

Counsel for Centre said that under the new integrated education
scheme, special children were being taught along with normal children.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development and the UP government
claimed that children wi

2017-10-30 Thread Ajay Minocha via Ai
Hi All,

It was similar to what you must have experienced in the stores across
the country. I had booked the slot in advance as I was advised to do
so.
The staff was very polite and helpful and assisted me to the best of
their capabilities. I did have couple of suggestions which were
welcomed by them through the feedback form.
1. I have a right to privacy even if I am a shopper with disability. I
don't need more than one assistant at one point of time. My shopping
list should only be seen by my assistant
2. Feedback should be captured by online survey platforms and
shouldn't be paper-based.
3. Considering that many of us might have sensitive items in our lists
at times, it becomes preferable to have the assistant of same gender
especially in case of female shoppers.

All in all, I would surely want to see it becoming a permanent feature
of all the BigBazar stores.

Regards,
Ajay

Re: [Ai] help require to get credit card

2017-10-30 Thread Ajay Minocha via Ai
Hi,

I time and again urge my visually impaired friends to learn a basic
form of signature. Though thumb impression is a facility which must be
extended to everyone yet we should have a wayout from the present
situation.

I use two of them i.e. Citi and HDFC and both of them are well aware
of my blindness. All they are concerned about my ability to pay them
on time. Your blindness doesn't come into picture anywhere.

Cheers,
Ajay

most definitely.

But in Prof. Saibaba's case, it has become a matter of life and death.
And it is extremely saddening to see such limited support or protest
on the part of self-promoting disability activists/ advocates.

Think

I Will Survive This Winter"

NEW DELHI: Dr G.N.Saibaba Professor at Delhi University and now in
solitary confinement in Nagpur Central Jail has spoken out for help.
Disabled, he has
been branded a Maoist and sentenced to life imprisonment. The
sentencing has been controversial with many who supported and defended
the Professor insisting
that he has been persecuted by governments for raising a voice against
paramilitary operations in the primarily tribal Adivasi belts of
central and eastern
India.

The government has not entertained these arguments, and nor have the
courts, with THE Professor, 90 per cent disabled and suffering from
multiple ailments,
himself writing in this letter to his wife Vasantha that he might not
be able to survive the winter months in jail. He has been convicted
under the Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act in what those convinced of his innocence
describe as a travesty of justice.

The letter was written on October 17 and received by his wife on
October 25. It reads as follows:

Dear Vasantha

I am frightened to think of coming winter. Already I am shivering with
continuous fever. I do not have a blanket. I do not have a
sweater/jacket. As temperature
goes down excruciating pain continuously in my legs and left hand
increases. It is impossible for me to survive here during the winter
that starts from
November.

I am living here like an animal taking its last breaths. Somehow 8
months I managed to survive. But I am not going to survive in the
coming winter. I am
sure. It is of no use to write about my health any longer.

In any case, please finalize the senior counsel by or before the end
of this month. Then inform Mr. Gadling to file my bail application in
the first week
of November or last week of October itself. You remember if this is
not done in this way, my situation will be out of hands. I am not
responsible. I am
making clear to you. Hereafter I am not going to write about it any
longer.

You should talk to Mrs Rebeccaji and Nandita Narain. You also talk to
Prof. Haragopal and others. Explain the entire situation. You need to
hurry up.

I am feeling so depressed for requesting you all so many times like a
beggar, a destitute. But none of you are moving an inch, no one
understand my present
condition. No one understands 90% disabled person is behind bars
struggling with one hand in condition and suffering with multiple
ailments. And no one
cares for my life. This is simply criminal negligence, a callous
attitude.

Please take care of your health. Your health is my health and entire
family’s health. There is no one else to take care of your health for
now. Till I
am in your presence, you have to take care of your health without any
negligence.

Lots of love

Yours

Sai

Re: [Ai] Soft launch of an accessible shopping experience at Big Bazaar stores across 17 cities, 29th to 31st October

2017-10-30 Thread Prashant Ranjan Verma via Ai
Dear Vineet,
I went to one Big Bazaar store today. Overall it was a good experience.
I have written about it on my facebook, also copying it below.
https://www.facebook.com/prashantranjan.verma.5/posts/1667190163352567

I was extremely happy when I got the news that Big Bazaar is planning to
provide accessible shopping experience to persons with disabilities. We being a
visually impaired couple face difficulties on a regular basis in shopping. We
try to fulfil our requirements through online shopping and by ordering the
nearby shops on phone. But for many things we do need to go to stores like Big
Bazaar. We have always wanted to take advantage of the wide variety of products
and lower prices in Big Bazaar but inability to read the price tags and find
the desired product on the big shopping floor stops us from going there
regularly.

Being the chief functionary of a prominent organization for the visually
impaired, I understand the importance of this initiative and therefore I
congratulate Big Bazaar for taking this step for the first time in the retail
industry. At my organization the National Association for the Blind (Delhi), I
interact with hundreds and thousands of visually impaired who have narrated
their difficulties with shopping in the past. This initiative of Big Bazaar
will in all probability push the other retail chains to follow them and all
this is just good news for people who have difficulties in reading, hearing,
speech or mobility.

I decided to just walk into the Big Bazaar store in the Ambience Mall in Vasant
Kunj, New Delhi today to personally experience the change. I entered the Big
Bazaar carrying a white cane from their ground floor. After a few minutes I was
able to meet a person who seemed to be staff of Big Bazaar and I asked him to
take me to their customer care counter. He led me to the counter and introduced
me to the lady handling the counter. I told her that I needed assistance for
shopping. The lady immediately called a person from her team and asked him to
assist me. It seemed to me from their conversation that they were well aware of
what needed to be done. They requested me to come back for filling up a short
questionnaire after the shopping was completed.
I walked with the Big Bazaar staff holding his arm. He picked up a trolley for
me. Another Big Bazaar staff started walking with us to help in shopping. I
told them about all the things I needed so that they could stop at the first
shelf that had items of my interest.

They read out the names of the products and prices for me. Within few minutes I
got whatever I needed. This was such a big change from my previous experiences
when I have wasted so much time going around and around the shelves not being
able to find my desired products. . The Big Bazaar shopping assistant helped me
with the billing also which was quick as well. Then we walked to the
customer care desk where the lady read out the small questionnaire and noted my
response and contact details. I understand that this is a onetime survey to
better understand the need of the disabled customers and I am happy to help out
in it.

My shopping experience was hassle free and actually a pleasant experience. I am
just afraid that I will end up spending much more than my budget with this kind
of assistance at shopping. My wife is delighted to learn about my experience
and she can’t wait to go there with her big shopping list alone, since I am not
as patient as her at shopping!

I understand that for the team at Big Bazaar these are the first experiences of
catering to customers with a difference and therefore they are also learning to
react appropriately. The only small change I would like is to be immediately
identified as a customer requiring assistance on entering the store since I was
carrying a white cane. Today it happened after some time, I am sure when more
and more people like me will go to Big Bazaar, this aspect will also improve.

With thanks and best wishes for Big Bazaar and the person who took this
initiative,
Prashant Ranjan Verma
General Secretary of National Association for the Blind (Delhi), www.nabdelhi.in

[Ai] Request to maintain propriety

2017-10-30 Thread Dinesh Kaushal via Ai
Dear All,

It was upsetting to see that many of us decided to go for personal attacks on a
topic on which there could be different opinions. Unlike many of the learned
members of this list, I don't know much about this case, so I would not argue
about it. Besides, this mailing list is not to discuss the merits of the case.
But I would at least request to maintain the decency in conversations.

I too feel that the mail was off topic, but haven't we had many off topic
discussions? Couldn't we politely say that this is an off topic article and
move on?

And suppose we were discussing a topic which is core to our mandate, should we
start attacking each other rather than discussing merits or demerits of our
arguments? I am pretty sure that even a judge who presides over cases and makes
a decision also thinks that under current circumstances I can reach this
conclusion rather than thinking that she or he knows everything that is there
to know?

Considering that we may not know everything about many situations, I request
members to avoid snap judgement and hold your thoughts for a while and consider
that there could be another explanation of what is being presented. It is very
satisfying to think that you know it all, but that is the biggest illusion!

And one more request, don't bring baggage from other mailing lists. Stay on
point and avoid personal attacks. Just because someone's opinion does not match
with my opinion, I should not assume that he or she has divisive communal
agenda.

Peace!
Dinesh

Re: [Ai] Dr. Saibaba's Letter From Jail: "I Do Not Think I Will Survive This Winter"

2017-10-30 Thread muruganandan.k via Ai
even a person who is going to be hanged deserves respectful treatment
and a decent living condition. When murderous, corrupt and criminal
politicians, fraudsters, anti-social elements and sexual offenders are
allowed to walk free and enjoy all luxuries even within jails, why not
a decent living condition for Prof. Saibaba?
Dear friends and nationalists who want to be in the good records of
the rulers, even in your own viewpoint, he has been sentenced only to
life imprisonment for his "crime", not to be killed in the prison due
to non-availability of his basic amenities.

 Disabled, he has

sentencing has been controversial with many who supported and defended
 the Professor insisting
that he has been persecuted by governments for raising a voice against
paramilitary operations in the primarily tribal Adivasi belts of
 central and eastern
 India.

The government has not entertained these arguments, and nor have the
courts, with THE Professor, 90 per cent disabled and suffering from
 multiple ailments,
himself writing in this letter to his wife Vasantha that he might not
be able to survive the winter months in jail. He has been convicted
 under the Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act in what those convinced of his innocence
describe as a travesty of justice.

The letter was written on October 17 and received by his wife on
October 25. It reads as follows:

 Dear Vasantha

I am frightened to think of coming winter. Already I am shivering with
continuous fever. I do not have a blanket. I do not have a
 sweater/jacket. As temperature
goes down excruciating pain continuously in my legs and left hand
increases. It is impossible for me to survive here during the winter
 that starts from
 November.

I am living here like an animal taking its last breaths. Somehow 8
months I managed to survive. But I am not going to survive in the
 coming winter. I am
sure. It is of no use to write about my health any longer.

In any case, please finalize the senior counsel by or before the end
of this month. Then inform Mr. Gadling to file my bail application in
 the first week
of November or last week of October itself. You remember if this is
not done in this way, my situation will be out of hands. I am not
 responsible. I am
making clear to you. Hereafter I am not going to write about it any
 longer.

You should talk to Mrs Rebeccaji and Nandita Narain. You also talk to
Prof. Haragopal and others. Explain the entire situation. You need to
 hurry up.

I am feeling so depressed for requesting you all so many times like a
beggar, a destitute. But none of you are moving an inch, no one
 understand my present
condition. No one understands 90% disabled person is behind bars
struggling with one hand in condition and suffering with multiple
 ailments. And no one
cares for my life. This is simply criminal negligence, a callous
 attitude.

Please take care of your health. Your health is my health and entire
family’s health. There is no one else to take care of your health for
 now. Till I
am in your presence, you have to take care of your health without any
 negligence.

 Lots of love

 Yours

 Sai

If you are a shortwave listener I advice you to download apps like simple
radio, tune in radio etc. Which are fairly accessible in both android and
ios devices. Some of the countries already stopped broadcasting on
shortwave metres. Now you don't get voice of America, ABC, Radio Mosco and
many other stations in shortwave bands. There is no future for
conventional shortwave and medium wave radio stations.

most definitely.

But in Prof. Saibaba's case, it has become a matter of life and death.
And it is extremely saddening to see such limited support or protest
on the part of self-promoting disability activists/ advocates.

Re: [Ai] [AI] Soft launch of an accessible shopping experience at Big Bazaar stores across 17 cities, 29th to 31st October

2017-10-30 Thread Preeti Monga via Ai
Dear Vineet

This is a great initiative and we all need this kind of service very much!
Thank you for taking the first steps towards making shopping accessible to
the visually impaired. I am sure other companies will follow your lead and
make many more services accessible for us!

However, please may I say that most visually impaired people are not used
to getting out and that too for shopping! There are various factors for
this. So this will take time, and we will have to keep on reassuring and
encouraging people to come forward. I too will be visiting one of your
stores in East Delhi tomorrow.

It could also be the shortage of time, or mobility issues at the personal
front that is preventing us from going to your esteemed store!

Please be patient, there will be teething problems, but we don't want to
give up the baby just because there are problems! Please do keep up the
great work! And there is no city in India where there are no blind people!
Only they are kept away from mainstream society by many many factors! Slowly
when these people realize that theendently, they will come flocking to your
store!

Will give you all my feedback tomorrow!

Warmly
Preeti

Please spread the word if you reside in these cities because your response

Persons with Visual Disabilities do not exist in these cities and Big

Such anti-national elements generate no sympathy through the letters like this
one.
Again and again asserting upon his 90 percent disability too will not help.
Had he considered all this before indulging himself in anti-national acts, he
would not have gone to jail.
So, no begging in the name of disability.

paramilitary operations in the primarily tribal Adivasi belts of central and
eastern India.

The government has not entertained these arguments, and nor have the courts,
with THE Professor, 90 per cent disabled and suffering from multiple ailments,
himself writing in this letter to his wife Vasantha that he might not be able
to survive the winter months in jail. He has been convicted under the Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act in what those convinced of his innocence describe
as a travesty of justice.

The letter was written on October 17 and received by his wife on October 25. It
reads as follows:

Dear Vasantha

I am frightened to think of coming winter. Already I am shivering with
continuous fever. I do not have a blanket. I do not have a sweater/jacket. As
temperature goes down excruciating pain continuously in my legs and left hand
increases. It is impossible for me to survive here during the winter that
starts from November.

I am living here like an animal taking its last breaths. Somehow 8 months I
managed to survive. But I am not going to survive in the coming winter. I am
sure. It is of no use to write about my health any longer.

In any case, please finalize the senior counsel by or before the end of this
month. Then inform Mr. Gadling to file my bail application in the first week of
November or last week of October itself. You remember if this is not done in
this way, my situation will be out of hands. I am not responsible. I am making
clear to you. Hereafter I am not going to write about it any longer.

You should talk to Mrs Rebeccaji and Nandita Narain. You also talk to Prof.
Haragopal and others. Explain the entire situation. You need to hurry up.

I am feeling so depressed for requesting you all so many times like a beggar, a
destitute. But none of you are moving an inch, no one understand my present
condition. No one understands 90% disabled person is behind bars struggling
with one hand in condition and suffering with multiple ailments. And no one
cares for my life. This is simply criminal negligence, a callous attitude.

Please take care of your health. Your health is my health and entire family’s
health. There is no one else to take care of your health for now. Till I am in
your presence, you have to take care of your health without any negligence.

Lots of love

Yours

Sai

Re: [Ai] help require to get credit card

2017-10-30 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafay via Ai
In this regard, isn't there any RBI circular to the effect that credit
card can not be denied to visually impaired person? If it is there, it
must be shown to credit card issuing authorities.
I have 3 credit cards from SBI and HDFC banks, I haven't face any
issue with either of them, as they don't know I am visually impaired
person.

2017-10-30 Thread Avichal Bhatnagar via Ai
So, the rabble-rousers who were thrown out from another mailing list
some years back have started using accessindia as a platform to
promote their divisive communal agenda, I see.
Since the professor wrote the letter in such a pleading language, so
we all decided the case in his favour.
Did we even bother to check the other side as well? Moreover, even if
there is negligence on the part of the prison authorities, court
should be approached, not protest on streets.

the Professor insisting
that he has been persecuted by governments for raising a voice against
paramilitary operations in the primarily tribal Adivasi belts of

The government has not entertained these arguments, and nor have the
courts, with THE Professor, 90 per cent disabled and suffering from
multiple ailments,
himself writing in this letter to his wife Vasantha that he might not
be able to survive the winter months in jail. He has been convicted

The letter was written on October 17 and received by his wife on
October 25. It reads as follows:

Dear Vasantha

I am frightened to think of coming winter. Already I am shivering with
continuous fever. I do not have a blanket. I do not have a

goes down excruciating pain continuously in my legs and left hand
increases. It is impossible for me to survive here during the winter

I am living here like an animal taking its last breaths. Somehow 8

coming winter. I am

In any case, please finalize the senior counsel by or before the end

Hi,

Go to windows update settings and then set windows not to install
updates for few days.

Alternatively, go to your wi-fi network's settings and make it a
metered connection. Updates generally don't get downloaded over a
metered connection.

Hope this helps,
Ajay
