Re: [all-audio] recording with a software timer

2018-03-19 Thread Colin Howard
Joe,

TotalRecorder will do exactly what he needs, least the version I have which
is V8.3PRO will.

I use it all the time to record whilst away, I can have up to five streams
recording on one pc at the same time but this obviously must depend largely
on the capacity of the broadband available.

TR needs the actual streaming link, such as, for radio 4 fm:

http://bbcmedia.ic.llnwd.net/stream/bbcmedia_radio4fm_mf_p

Go to tools, down to scheduler and enter.

Then do alt n for new, enter.

You are now on the general tab, first field is comment, enter a short
comment which helps one negotiate through the list of jobs, then tab to
radio buttons, record, background play, default is record, this causes the
sound to play whilst recording, I go down to background. next two radio
buttons, absolute time and duration, default is absolute time this I use, no
idea about use of duration.

4 radio buttons, start / stop time, default once, below is weeklyh, daily
and special, I've not investigated special.

Next, series of check boxes, what these are depends on the last setting,
once gives you date spin box for year, month and day, defaults to current
date, cursor up/down to set required date then next tab is start-stop time
hh mm ss for each. Daily shows spin boxes for actual time, hours, minutes,
seconds for start then same for end. default is all zero, cursor up/down to
set for each. Weekly shows 9 selections, weekdays, weekends, then each day
starting with Sunday. Special, which I have never used, shows a settings
button, I do not know what this is or how it works.

Next, having chosen (daily has already been set) we have spin boxes for
start time hh mm ss and end time hh mm ss.

Now start-stop time now, use predefined cryteria, advanced buttons, I've
left these alone at default.

Next the url for the stream.

Next, is a more button, left this alone.

Then two radio buttons one says let TR choose the file name the other you
choose the file name into which the recording will be saved. On my system
in the my music folder, I have a folder called TR DownLoads, in this, a
folder for 2018, within this, a folder for each month, within this a folder
for each day, within this, TR would place the file in the form of the stream
url plus date and time, so far, I have not been able to find a way of
ensuring TR saves other than in .mp3 128kbps 44,100Hertz stereo, maybe one
of the buttons mentioned above makes this possible, or one of the remaining
buttons. The TR Downloads folder is populated as TR needs to set anything
up.

Next edit field for file name, next file name button, then checkbox create a
new track separator for each clip when background recording by default is
unchecked, then ok, cancel, help.

Jobs can be exported / imported.

Having created your job(s), go to apply, return, ok, return, job is
completed.

You cannot alter scheduled jobs when TR is running a scheduled job.

Hope this rather brief explanation is sufficiently clear.

Hello folks

A friend would like to record streaming radio on his pc.

He needs to set a timer, so that while away from his setup, the
recording will start at a pre-defined hour and minute.

Apart from Goldwave, is there a fairly in-expensive solution to this?
If not He is happy to pay what ever is required.

thanks.

[all-audio] Clash Between Braille Display and Voice in Recording

2018-03-19 Thread Danny Miles
Hi everyone. I'm trying to record a book narration using GoldWave but
the sound of my display is coming out over the mic ... both the noise
of the pins changing as I move down the document and - more obviously
(it's often louder) - the sound of me pressing the button which moves
the document down by a line at a time. I've tried compression but this
doesn't always remove all of the sounds from the display without
removing the softer parts of my speech, such as the letter K in "look"
and "book". Does anyone have any practical experience of solving an
issue similar to this or any ideas of what I can do? Any help will be
so gratefully received ... you'll be life-savers.

Take care, Danny

Ok. Try vlc. Or if you want, send me the file; I'll probably be able to do
something with it. It's true that there are some video files I just have not
been able to get Winamp to play, even after downloading codecs and such.
Without knowing specifically what format your file uses, it's hard to tell
what is needed. Again, .mov is not really a video format, it's a container
like .mkv or.avi, and can contain different media streams of different
encoding formats.

Another thing you can try ... believe it or not, it's such a simple thing
that you wouldn't think it would work, but there are some extensions winamp
simply won't normally recognise. Try renaming the file, changing its

Re: [all-audio] Converting An MOV File To MP3

2018-03-19 Thread JM Casey
Ok.

Well I thought I was on to something! I did as you suggested (tried
changing the extension to MP40 it did come up in Winamp...and for a second,

Another thing you can try ... believe it or not, it's such a simple thing
that you wouldn't think it would work, but there are some extensions winamp
simply won't normally recognise. Try renaming the file, changing its

winamp plays *.ogg files, it is a common format "vorbis" been around about
as long as *.mp3. :) switch should convert that, even cdex will convert it,
but why convert when winamp plays those.

Hello Howard and list: Unless I'm missing something, .mov is not listed in the
list of Winamp file types! I don't have Gold Wave on my computer; am probably
one of the few who have never done anything with that product...although I do

Seems like you could go into the winamp settings and somewhere in there is a
list of the filetypes it'll handle. Just be sure that .mov is listed there.
I think I'd try loading it into goldwave then saving it as mp3. Not sure,

Re: [all-audio] Converting An MOV File To MP3

2018-03-19 Thread JM Casey
You could probably extract the audio from the video file with a program. I was
using something to do this on my old computer, at least with avi. Mkv and DVD
content. Unfortunately I cannot currently remember the name of the program.
You could also download VLC player to play the .mov file. The .mov is a
container format developed by apple, I believe. Whether something can play it
depends not on the type of container but on the type of encoding used. VLC is
the best at handling all different types of encoding, in my experience. Looking
it up now, it appears that .mov files often use the mp4 encoding for
compression, which, again, is common for Apple stuff (AAC format, etc). Winamp
should play this out-of-the-box, but if there is some DRM (digital rites
protection) on the file, I suppose that might be stopping it from working. I
believe there might be a plugin for winamp that works around this. You'll have
to search for it. Just remember that winamp isn't developed anymore so it's
anyone's guess what has happened to its plug-ins. Still, I downloaded one for a
different file format not that long ago and it worked fine.

Subject: Re: [all-audio] Converting An MOV File To MP3

winamp plays *.ogg files, it is a common format "vorbis" been around
about as long as *.mp3. :)
switch should convert that, even cdex will convert it, but why convert
when winamp plays those.

2018-03-19 Thread Tom Kaufman
Anders: It's currently playing in Windows Media (which I'm not too
particularly crazy about) I do like Winamp, even though I understand that it
is not being updated! I presume that tthis particular file extension is
what you get when sending music via smart phone?
