Re: [all-audio] Another Winamp Problem

2024-02-17 Thread Brian Olesen via groups.io
HI all,
With all respect I know we are talking about Winamp here, but I'd like to point
your attention to one thing.
Foobar 2000 has been rewritten and is now available in Microsoft Store for
newer versions of Windows.
What I really love about Foobar is that you can program your own hotkeys and on
the status line tell it to show exactly what you'd like to see there like total
play time of the current play list and so on. In that way you are less
screenreader dependent.
I really like this program for playing and finding music on my pc.
I'd recommend you to give it a test ride for a more modern and smooth listening
experience.

Best regards
Brian

How does it look different? I can't see anything and the interface seems
exactly the same as it always has been using the classic mode.

Tom.
Don't worry about that. It just means the download was successful, and the
executable is now in your downloads folder. You'll see that message from your
browser from now on when you download stuff, unless there's another change to

[all-audio] Winamp and Windows 11 problem

2023-10-03 Thread Brian Olesen via groups.io
Hi all,

Winamp works kind of ok on Windows 11, but there is an issue though.

Winamp wont play files in line any more.

If you have some files numbered from 001 to 015 for example Winamp simply
plays them kind of strangely.

Have you seam similar behavior, and does a solution exist?

Thanks in advance.

The Shure sm58 is super cardioid directional not omni.
If you want to start out cheap get yourself a EV RE635A omni on ebay. One
mic will do the job well you do not need 4 of them. With 4 mics you also
would need to purchase a mixer. Find a powered speaker of decent quality
that has a mic level xlr input. A condenser multi pattern mic would be
nice but you can upgrade to it when you can afford it.

Re: [all-audio] sound system

2022-11-15 Thread Brian Olesen via groups.io
Hi Dean,
I know this is not the cheapest solution out there, but on the other hand
you'll be bullet proof in almost all situations.
As the speaker system I'd suggest this new cool thing from electrovoice.
I'm sure this one will do great for your performance.
For a microphone you could use a simple Shure sm58 or another omni
directional mic.
To having 4 people share just one mic is close to impossible regardless of
how you try to do it.
Then 4 cheap mics would be a much better solution.
The most critical thing for yourself and your audience is the speaker
system.

Hi. I'm seeking recommendations for a high-quality mic to be used with an
iPhone. Here's a description of what I'm looking for. This would be for
someone specifically using an iPhone to be used on a Teams call. This person
would be on the call at an exhibit hall at a convention. They would be doing
this to talk with vendors live on the call. If possible and practical, we'd
also want a portable speaker loud enough so that participants on the call
could ask questions to be heard by the person on the floor at the
convention. This would obviously need to be as portable as possible as the
meeting host with the iPhone would be moving about to speak with the various
vendors. Are there good quality mic/speaker combo units that can be used
like this? I'd be interested in any recommendations from those of you with
experience doing this.

2022-07-28 Thread Brian Olesen via groups.io
HI all,

I wonder, if there is an easy to use Internet radio app in Microsoft Store
that also is accessible and fun to use?

Thanks in advance.

I have used vlc on and off mostly off for a while and can't say I have found it
to be very accessible with jaws or NVDA but its useable.

I know the newer versions of vlc have a dynamic audio compressor plugin
built in.

I have gone in to the tools and effects and after some digging found it.

I do find using the touch cursor in jaws gives me allot more access here
but I still can't seem to get it to actually work.

What am i missing?

Any settings I need to make to improve accessibility?

Thanks in advance.

John's right. GoldWave is good too, although I believe you have to purchase
that one as aposed to Audacity which is free. GoldWave from what I can tell
from listening to other tutorials that people have made with it, it seems
user friendly with jaws too. Here's the link for that one too:

Good morning Steward:
Yes, there's a simple way to do just that. Are you familiar with the audio
editor Audacity? I often refer to it as a word document in audio format,
because of the way you edit files with it. Just like Word, you have to
select text prior to deleting or changing it in any way. Audacity is free
and easy to use, and is very friendly with Jaws. You say the first 4 minutes
of your file is blank? No problem. With audacity, all you have to do, is
find the spot in the file where the audio starts, press the left bracket to
put a placemarker there, press shift J to select everything from the
placemarker back to the left, then press control K to delete the silence.

Hi John,
Speech lies in the frequency spectra of about 3.5 khz to 5.5 khz. So if you
have an E Q you can raize that specific area of the song a few decibels to
enhance the vocals a little bit.

so far, I have tried 3 of them, the NT3 mono, the NT4 stereo, and the one

the NT3 and NT4, are both very good, and can be used with either phantom
power, or can take a standard PP3 battery, so are also good for field or out
and about work, when phantom power may not be available.
the iPhone one, unless some adjustment needs to be made to it in it's app,
(which at the time didn't seem very accessible, although that may be
different now), was extremely disappointing.
hope that helps.

Hello David,

Your recordings will sound better if you give a little thought to damping
audio refections. It is amazing what a few cushions and a blanket draped
over a door can do. Your fan is probably being recorded because there are
plenty of hard surfaces to bounce the audio around. Introduce plenty of soft
furnishings to stop the sound from being reflected. Also change the angle of
hard surfaces if you can. Because if you have 2 parallel surfaces sound just
bounces backwards and forwards and is amplified. By having a door half open,
will reflect the sound in a different direction. There are many DIY acoustic
hood youtube videos. From a simple cardboard box to things a lot more
elaborate. Sound also bounces from floor to ceiling. Stand on a soft rug or
something to stop the bounce. A cardboard box tippled up on its sided with
your bed pillow inside and against the back of the box will have a dramatic
change to the recording.

It is a lot easier to stop it being recorded in the first place than to
remove it..

Regards,

Gena

HI,
Very much like the QC35 II but with some improvement for the function your
own voice.
It's still Sony, who has the best noise reduction.

I am just wondering how it works with the touch gestures?
I suppose they will work for a blind person as there are no display on the
headphones.

Re: [all-audio] Looking for Bose HearPhone Users

2020-08-29 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi mike,
Yes Bose Connect controlls the headphones.

Here is what you do, if it's Quiet Comfort 35.
First you pull the on / off switch far over and hold it there for a few
seconds till it says pairing.
Then in settings, Bluetooth on your iPhone you can see the headset. Called it's
full name like Bose QC35 something.
Then you pair and bingo. You're going.
Then open your Bose Connect app and explore it's features which are somewhat
accessible.

Best regards
Brian

Hi Brian,

They are definitely wireless, i.e. bluetooth, and there is an app that can be
used in conjunction with the iPhone. I think I will get sighted assistance to
see if there is a model number on the case.

The really good thing about this mic is the super cool settings in the

Infact you can try the Motif app without even having the microphone.

Hi!
Ok, that’s the one i was thinking of.
I am not really fond of recording with a pair of bluetooth mics that might
loose the connecthin in the middle of the recording.
Also bluetooth is wireles and compressed which isn’t something i like.
But maybe they are recording with lossless streaming so i wont say i buy them
in the future.

Wow just red about the Complete audio 2 on Sweet Water's page. It does
192 KHZ 24 bits full HD audio. For only $139. Awesome. I'll check out the demos
tomorow because I can't think a 139$ thing would sound any better than a 400$
Zoom H6. Even if it does do full 192 KHZ. Still though Full HD for only 139
bucks, pretty good deal for someone starting out me thinks.

Re: [all-audio] Bluetooth Headphone Recommendations for listening to Lossless Music Files?

2019-11-14 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi,
I think any one, who really loves music should stick to their ears rather than
be blown out of their socks by the technical specifications.
We all listen to so very different sound sources and music genres, and no
single set of cans do provide a universal approach to this. I mean some likes a
very tight bass, where others loves very soft sounding gentle headphones.
Others again likes a screaming high pitched sound, where some feels the same
sound makes them believe they've tinnitus. Grin
There for. If the headphone you're seeking really should suit your needs then
you'd want to give them a listen first, and decide what color of sound you want.
They can be so darn wild on the paper specs, but it won't matter, if you simply
just don't like their sound, or should we say, if your ears don't fit their
specific sound profile.
For example I have a relatively cheap pair of Yamahas I truly love, and I mean
really love!
I think they're just about $ 120 or so, and they sound really good to me. Then
I also have a $ 500 plus pair of Bayer dynamics that well kind of sounds good,
but don't knocks me off the chair, if you know what I mean.
So what does it help to have a pair of cans that can communicate with bats
using ultra sound, if you don't like their low-end sound?
Smile

Best regards
Brian

Ah well if we go down this rode you also have to consider your computer phone
or aVR or what ever other device. Different PCs and even from the same company
depending on model give you a different flavor. I suppose you will get with
studio headphones or studio monitoring speakers a more honest sound but how
honest is the device? For stereo spread I love my
2007 slim Enspiron 530S. But it's bass is wimpy and there's none of that real
bright condencer like crispness. My 2014 3847 tower does that better but there
are sound effect gimics I don't like to it's sound. Man it's another reason I
wish I had $2500 for an MSI Trident. That PC is pure epicness.

I'm looking to purchase a good pair of 5.0 high-resolution Bluetooth headphones

Don't care about price. Just want a pair of headphones that literally place me

Any recommendations?

I can’t honestly be sure but I can say that the LS-P4 is far better than the
LS14 for recording quiet scenes.
I think the “Look Ahead” buffer in the LS-P4 is a far better idea than that of
the “Smart Level” function of the LS14.

The feet of the LS-P4 are one of the recorders weaknesses and

Hi,
Yes they work fine with an iPhone.
5 hours then they need to be put back into the case for recharging.
I'm not sure, but I think it's 13 hours in all.
And this new generation even can be charged wirelessly.

Hi Brian!

Thanks for your thoughts.

About the Samsung earbuds: How do they charge and what is their battery life?

Also, would they work well with an iPhone?

I see they have an ambient mode, which sounds potentially useful. Any thoughts
on using this mode as a blind person and how it affects perception of the
environment, e.g. directionality of hearing?

All best,

Hey Laurent,
Well I probably would recommend you to get the quite new Airpods if latency
is a big issue.
If sound is more important I'd either go with some Bose Soundsports free or
the Samsung EarBuds.
I really love these. The Samsungs are small. They sound really good, and
they has a sweet metal carieing case.
The price is right too for the good quality.

My trusty wired apple earpods have finally given up the ghost and I'm now
quite keen to enter the world of nifty little wireless earbuds with their
conpenient charging cases! However, I'm loathed to throw money at Apple if
similar or better functionality could be obtained elsewhere at a lower

I intend using these primarily for audiobooks and a bit of music on my

Low latency for effective use with Voiceover or Talkback Reasonable battery

Hi,
Marcio. Depending on how authentic you want it you could use impulses for the
perfectly right venue.
On the other hand you could also just use a very long large hall and then for
the audencity of it keep your microphone very close to your mouth while speking
into it.

Hi,
The following test comes curtesy of my friend Tom.
Tom has 3 pairs of Bluetooth headphones each with a microphone as he explains
in this Demo, a pair from B, a pair from B and a pair from Bose.
The B and Bose pairs have noise cancelling where you hear the difference in
how the microphone sounds due to processing.
The B P5 pair has no noise cancelling and - in my opinion - sounds more
natural.
Having said that however the B and Bose pairs are not uncomfortable to listen
to.
Anyway judge for yourself.
I forward this on as I’m sure there are a lot of list members out there
wondering just how the microphones sound on headsets these days.
Surprisingly - although the Sony is rated as the best noise cancelling headsets
available - the microphones of these headsets sound absolutely dreadful when it
comes to making phone calls.

I found this sample of Stereo AM - from radio station 3MP in Melbourne - on

I’d love to know what type of tuner this recording was made from as the band

My Sony tuner was capable of this but only after it had been adjusted.

Hi everyone,

I know there are a few people out there who are into Electronic and DIY
projects of the same nature like me.

Up until now I've found it very difficult to find power supply units that
can be set accurately without vision and offering stable Yes, some
"Plugpack" units will allow quite a bit of flexibility these days but let's
face it, these units are of a low quality usually and don't last too long.

Not only that they don't have the voltage or current range required for good
testing and are subject to RF interference or contribute to the RF
interference in the immediate environment, as if we don't have enough of
that already.

I've found a Power Supply unit which is easy to set for blind people,
incredibly accurate and incredibly quiet as far as RF noise goes.

You can see the power supply at
https://www.jaycar.com.au/0-to-30vdc-0-to-5a-regulated-power-supply/p/MP3840
?utm_campaign=redirect
<https://www.jaycar.com.au/0-to-30vdc-0-to-5a-regulated-power-supply/p/MP384
0?utm_campaign=redirect_source=MP3840r_medium=web>
_source=MP3840r_medium=web

I'm writing from Australia so residents of the US will have to do a bit of
digging to find a similar unit though residents of the UK shouldn't have any
trouble sourcing this supply as Jaycar also do business in the UK.

As you can see the supply has a voltage range of 0 to 30 volts and 0 to 5
amps so any value can be set in these ranges even fine voltage adjustments
can be made - say 1.2 volts -.

The supply has 2 jog-dials on the face to control volts and amps.

These dials click when turned and push in.

Suppose you wanted to adjust the voltage to 4.5 volts.

After turning the supply on you would press the voltage jog-dial once and
turn 4 clicks clockwise, press the jog-dial in to advance to the next unit
and turn the dial clickwise 5 clicks.

The beauty of this supply is that you hear a beep when you've reached the
minimum or maximum value so you can count up or down by click from these
points, the count doesn't wrap around so once you're say at 30 volts the
unit will beep and stay at 30 volts unless you turn the voltage dial anti
clockwise to bring the voltage count down.

The supply remembers the last settings made when the power is turned off.

I have also discovered power supplies available where voltage and current
values can be set via an IOS or Android App.

I say partially because it might lack some necessary power.

The big question is how long will it be before HumanWare etc make full use of
the capabilities of a Raspberry Pi system?
There are now Braille devices using Raspberry Pi computers so I reckon it won’t
be long before we see other devices designed for the Blind using these and
about time too.

Its Lynux.
I know someone who has modified their Stream to make it more functional and

According to him the Stream uses a lot of widely available LYNUX open-source

Hi all

Want to know if some of you technical gurus can help me.

Someone gave me a Bluetooth speaker to test for her.

This is one of the strangest Bluetooth speakers I have ever worked with!

Firstly, it uses an apple lightning port to charge from and not a micro usb
port. So you would need a lightning to USB port to charge it with.

The speaker stands on a base upright and is slightly thinner at the top. It
is rubberised on the side but it seems if you can remove the rubber. It’s
also a completely sircular speaker.

The on and off switch is on the bottem underneath the speaker so you cannot
accidentaly slide it. Under the rubber there also seems to be some buttons.
There is a very clearly distinguishable button which may be a volume up and
down button but which you can also press inwards.

The best make I can come up with is

Vulkan

But I am at a luss to find a manual for this thing.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Regards

Andr é

Hi!
The Victor Stream 2nd generation was one of the worst access tech thing i
bought.
Its the worst crap i have hold in my hand.
It turns off if i am not to careful and hit the wall or something else with it.
And i have to begin from the place i was long before i hit the stream if you do
understand.
People do enjoy this device and of corse i do respect that but in my opinion it
should has cost les than it does.
Its a shame humanware can release such a device.
So from that perspective the Ipod touch is not expensive at all.

Hi Brian,
A few sites where you can get good sound effects.
ZapSplat , which is for sure my favorite.
You need an account for downloading stuff here and free accounts candownload
only up to 3 sounds each 10 minutes if I'm not going wrong, but the quality
pays off, believe me :) Sound Bible , for free sound
clips FreeSFX , here you can find sound effects and
probably some backgrounds too.

Hope this helps :)

[all-audio] question about good sound pages

2019-07-06 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi good people,

Well I need some high quality sounds for a project.

Specifically real sounds from a shotgun, but without the reloading clicks.

Actually it's just a good deep gunshot from a caliber 12 gun for hunting.

Do you know of any good pages, where I can find such kind of stuff for free?

Thanks in advance.

Brian

HI,
Oh sorry didn't see the demand for portability.
If you need real power you can look at Soundboks
It is quite expensive though, but can definitely run a party.

Re: [all-audio] Yesterday's Apple event

Hi Gina,
Google Assistant is very good at understanding human voice. Probably the best

Alexa is almost just as good, but dear miss Siri lacks quite a bit behind.
The response voice that comes with Siri is seriously upgraded with iOS 13 which
definitely sutes her!

Hello,
I wondered from your perspective, what assistant works best for you? I get the
impression that Google, Alexa and Siri are equal in terms of understanding my
request. I am wondering if the Google service is better as users can teach it
their voice. Is Google tolerant of your voice presentation? Is Alexa better?

Please note, I am not enquiring about the response just purely of hearing
correctly the users request.

I’m not at all disputing what you say but I will add that Amazon can’t be too
far behind.
Actually where amazon seems to excel is with their microphone arrangements on
their devices, I’ve already written about how good hands free quality was with
Alexa and Skype.

Apple are going to have to get their act together as Voice Assistans are
incredibly powerful these days.
With Alexa you can create routines and I imagine the same can be done with
Google.
Samsung’s Bixby is even more powerful than that allowing a full scripting

In the meantime I’m perfectly happy with my 4 Mac mini machines, 2 iMac

1 Mac mini machine runs the Plex Media Server here, another manages the Twonky

All these Mac mini machines are late 2012 models and still going strong.

Hi Colin,
Thank you for replying.
I will give it a shot, and you are right an octave is quite a lot to move a
recording!

I could also use Sonar's Radius 2 but I'm not so familiar with adjusting
that specific plugin.

Greetings,

GoldWave will do the job.

There is a checkbox for tempo unchanged, check this for whatever you need,
say decrease by one octave, the sound is bound to be degraded slightly
because you are altering it's nature but the bird sound ought to be
acceptable.

It's in the effects menu and is very customizeable.

Hi,
I think there is a big diference between a private literature reader, and a

If you need access to specialized literature like manuals and other such

Hi,

I have a question for the list.

With the advent of such services as Kindle and Audible along with quite a
few others do list members think that Daisy will die or will their even be a
need for Daisy in the not to distant future.

With my Echo Show paired to my Braille Display I now read a huge amount of
content from Kindle though I can have the Show read this out using the
built-in TTS.

I'm also a great fan of Audible, I've had an Audbile account for years but
haven't used it very much until recently.

Again the Echo Show will handle Audible quite nicely though I do tend to
listen to Audible content through my Samsung phone which has incredibly good
sound particularly for spoken workd material or perhaps Audible is doing a
little optimisation somewhere in the audio chain .

I don't have a particular view on the question I asked above, I'm just
curious as to what other viewpoints are on this topic.

Yo Howard,
Some speakers are those so called bars, where there are 2 or more speaker units
in each bar. Others has a speaker on each side of them, and then again there
are round structures with speakers inside that creates this stereo feeling.
Then you have monorral speakers that some times can be paired as a synchronous
stereo pair, if you prefer that.

I'm wondering about the speakers that folks are talking about these
days: the blue tooth and the smart, etc. Are they one speaker or a box with
two or more speakers in it? We went for more than 50 years needing a pair of
speakers for stereo. Have we now gone back to listening to one speaker as if
we have one ear? I would hate to think that all these multi-channel systems
send their output to only one speaker.. I don't think my amazon echo dot plays
stereo so when I use it for music, I hook it up to my stereo system.

Hi there and sorry for the late reply.
I've had a look at this meter and my own personal view is that $400 is one
hell of a lot to spend on something like this.
I bought a Bluetooth Multi Meter from an Australian supplier called Jaycar
Electronics and this does me well enough.
I use my Android phone along with the downloadable App which does a number
of things.
Firstly you can double-tap on the screen to have a voice readout or set this
to automatic mode, the App uses Google TTS Engine or whatever you have set
as a default TTS engine.
Second the App creates a log which you can upload to Dropbox or Google Drive
so you can keep track of the measurements you're making or add notes if
required.
The cost of this meter was $130 Australian.
A quick search on Amazon reveals quite a few Bluetooth Multi Meter tools
which may be useful or in fact be the same as the one I'm discussing here so
its up to the buyer I guess to do some testing and to return the unit if it
can't be used.
Thanks Frank for passing this information on to the list.

[all-audio] Speaking about Olympus. An Ls-100 question

2019-02-20 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi folks,
Hope you're all doing good.
We just received a used ls-100 in very fine condition.
I wonder. Is it possible to find a good solid ls-100 specialised carrying case
for this recorder?
I'd prefer some leather but at least something that has been made for this
special unit would be nice.

Thanks in advance.

[all-audio] New Microphone from Shure

2019-01-12 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi all,

I just want to let you know that you now can order the new mv88+ package
from Shure.

It's not just a version 2 of the original mv88, but a whole package of a
stand that can hold your phone and the microphone itself while you're taking
a video, or doing a podcast, and it even has a real minijack plug for
monitoring.

The microphone is a little big larger then it's predecessor, and there is
included a cable for android devices as well.

It's a bit pricy though. $249.

Best regards

Brian

Re: [all-audio] Shure MV88 Lightning Connected iPhone Microphone Review

2018-12-04 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi,
It's actually not enough with a jack because often these jacks just are
hardware monitoring plugs that won't let VoiceOver through.
I am not entirely sure, but I think Shure mv51 is the only mike capable of real
jack headphone connectivity.

I find it odd that Sure didn't put a headphone Jack on the thing the mic is
attached to. Like Zoom did with theirs and I'm not sure if Rode did too.

Re: [all-audio] Recommendation for Against-the-Ear Headphones Wanted

2018-11-14 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi Steve,
It's really a matter of personal preference.
The over the ear tend to be more noise canceling then the ear cup versions, but
if you want your surrounding noise to be part of your listening environment you
should get a pair of open headphones.
When I master I definitely prefer fully closed headphones! But it's because I'm
no longer the youngest kid in town, so I can easely loose concentration and
loose important deetales in the mix, if everything else isn't keeped away from
my listening.

The subject line says it all. Good response for mixing, on-the-ear versus the
earcup variety of headphone. These usually have the driven element closer to
the ear than the ones that cup the ear, as well as letting the wearer hear more
external sounds. Some people don't like this, but there are definitely
applications where letting in a little more outside noise is required, such as
when one is in a broadcast setting and must be attentive to external sound
stimuli.

Hi Brian,

Sorry, should have mentioned that. It does sound more or less
reasonable given that it costs $40 USD. I am using it for speech only, both
dragon and phone/SIP. For those uses, the important thing is range, not sound
quality, and, though this is obviously preliminary because I've only been using
it a few days, it seems to work for those things which I want it for. It is not
remotely acceptable for music, I think, but my judgment of audio quality is
poor. Having said that, the reviews seem to agree with me about the fairly low
quality for music.

I'm also after something that doesn't require sight to use, specifically, no

As for Sennheiser, I've heard of the company but I am seeing allot of

transmit to a receiver from a microphone which is clipped on?
Thanks,
Aman

Certainly the Echo Dot 2ND machines I have here sound Tinny compared to the
Google Home Mini which sounds okay so if there’s anything around the same size
that sounds better then I’m all for it and I wouldn’t waste any time in ridding
myself of the Amazon 2nd Generation Dot machines and replacing them.
Unfortunately the amazon 3rd Generation Dot doesn’t seem to be available in
Australia yet.
I have 3 other Amazon echo machines here, the Echo first Generation, second
Generation and the Echo Tap which doesn’t seem to be widely supported here any
longer for whatever reason. Its a pity as I like the idea of a portable unit
which sounds quite reasonable and can play nice and loud which the Echo Tap
does.
The Echo 2nd Generation certainly sounds better than the First and I like the
idea of the line-out at the back of the 2nd Generation, I don’t think the first
had any connections at all apart from the AC input.

Wow. Finally I located the model number.
Sennheiser ME-3EW Headset

They have a cheeper one and it's also ok.
It is 2.4 ghz or something about that the legal frequencies here in Europe, but
the transmitter is very powerful.

Best regards
Brian

Hi Brian,

I would be very grateful indeed if you would. Even if it's
discontinued, I can look up the series and get the new model, and there's
always the used market. Thanks in advance for the time and effort. Thanks also
for the delay issue, I forgot to mention I needed one with no, or very little,
delay, which can't be said of all digital models.

Thanks very much for both your suggestions. I'm after a specific
product recommendation, not so much a store, I can, of course, contact any
number of stores, but what I want is someone who doesn't care if I buy
something or not. Sadly, sales people are in sales, which is why I ask here.
I'm also after something that doesn't require sight to use, specifically, no
inaccessible touch screen, pairing process, if necessary, to be accessible,
and so on.
As for Sennheiser, I've heard of the company but I am seeing allot of
headsets. Is there something which is not a headset and which will simply
transmit to a receiver from a microphone which is clipped on?
Thanks,
Aman

Hi all,

I realize we usually talk about audio output here, but there
are a good many people with expertise in audio more generally and I would be
most grateful for some help in at least narrowing options. I'm in search of
a long-range wireless microphone with a few odd specs. By long-range, I mean
at least 150 feet line-of-sight, obviously through walls will be less. I
need the device to be a microphone only, not a headset combination. I also
need the device to be powered by battery, certainly when using the
transmitter and preferably for the receiver as well. USB power is also good.
Finally, I would prefer the device not to use 2.4 gigahertz if at all
possible. 900 megahertz is fine, as is Dect and 5.8. This doesn't sound very
complicated, I know, but honestly it's difficult to find something that
meets all the specs above or, of course, the problem may be that I'm not
looking to the right people or places. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

[all-audio] Famous media player Winamp new version with Windows 10 support leaks online

2018-10-10 Thread Brian Olesen
Famous media player Winamp new version with Windows 10 support leaks online

By Mayank Parmar - September 17, 2018

Winamp for Windows

Remember Winamp? The popular media player for Windows is expected to make a
comeback at some point. Winamp was launched by independent developers back
in 1997 and it grew quickly popular with over 3 million downloads in a short
span of time.

In a couple of years, Winamp became one of the most downloaded Windows
applications. The app was sold to AOL in 1999 for $80 million but it later
acquired by Radionomy in 2014. Radionomy, the current developers of famous
Winamp promised that the app will receive a new update with several new
features.

A while ago, the developers published release notes of an update but no
downloadable package was available for users to try out. Winamp developers
promised major updates ever since it took over the company and we are still
waiting for that day.

It's an old and outdated app but it's still being used by millions of users.
A new version of Winamp, which was last developed on October 26, 2016, has
leaked online. Winamp 5.8 has been published by an unknown source and it's
not from the official developers.

It's also worth noting that VirusTotal scan generates two different warnings
for the app, so we are not including the link to unreleased Winamp update in
this article.

Winamp works fine on Windows 10

The Winamp 5.8 comes with several new features and improvements including
support for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

It is, however, worth noting that public and stable version of the app works
smoothly on Windows 10, but Winamp 5.8 is supposed to address compatibility
issues with Windows 10.

As noted above, this release of Winamp comes with several other
improvements. For example, there's a dedicated setting that lets you disable
Winamp's video support and the company has also fixed some bugs to improve
the overall performance of the player.

The current owner hasn't officially announced any updates for the app but as
the beta has just leaked out, there's a chance that an official statement
will be released soon. It's also possible that the developers are internally
testing a new and improved version of the app with better support for
Windows 10.

At this point, it's not yet known whether a new Winamp release is planned or
not. We are waiting for additional details from the developers and we will
update this article if and when a statement is available.

Hi.

I'm using v 5.666. I keep winamp around 90% because of the great equalizer
and playlist editor. I don't have any issue with removable drives but I have
turned all autoplay type features off in Windows. If I want to play stuff
from a removable drive, I select the folders using file explorer and add
them to a playlist.

The VlC equalizer is certainly a lot less convenient to set and save
settings than the Winamp one using a screen-reader. One can easily adopt any
of the presets, but saving your own settings requires messing with the
not-too-accessible filters within the preferences dialog box. Actually the
whole design is weird and I wish that Video Lan gave the ability to easily
save and load multiple equalizer settings in VLC.

Just curious, but why not have both programmes? I watch a lot of movies,
especially with my sighted partner, and VLC is without doubt an awesome
video player and far more versatile and just better at this than winamp ever
was. However, I still use Winamp for my audio needs and it works exceedingly
well for this purpose even in Windows 10.

But how is it with information about timing lenghth of files in minutes and

Are there other fields where VLC lacks information compared to Winamp?

Is it actually the other way around?

Hello, I downloaded VLC the latest version on my Windows 10 Pro laptop, running
System Access as my screen reader; each time I open any music file to play it,
I get the message Oops, VLC Media Player has crashed; do you want to send a
crash report to the developers? When I hit the Yes button, then the file
starts playing as it should. Any idea what makes VLC act like it's crashed and
how I ccan fix that problem short of getting rid of VLC altogether? Thanks.

Subject: [all-audio] A question about VLC 3?

Hi all,
I have a question about VLC.
Should we still stay with version 2, or is version 3 just as good in terms
of accessibility.

Brian

Re: [all-audio] Denon AVRX3400 Is Here

2018-05-02 Thread Brian Olesen
HI,
Here in Denmark we now have the dab plus system, which is a fantastic successor
to FM.
We live in the country, but we can easily receive these digital signals, and it
really sounds nice and clear.

Yeah it probabally has TuneIn Title and all that kinda stuff. Most of the hi
end AVRs do. They just don't seem to have I Heart Radio though for what ever
reason.

HI Dane,
Does this fine beast have more power than the old you had, or is it the same?
Could it maybe have some internet Radio capabilities since it is equipped with
wifi? Or could it be some other cool streaming stuff?
I'm really curious to know, what you find out about this good amplifier as I
may go of the same route as you here.

Hi!

Obviously I've not had a chance to get this amp going yet so I can only tell
you what I've observed from glancing at the unit, I hope to have a pair of
eyeballs tomorrow to guide me through the setup process.

Anyway the AVRX3400h is of the same build as the AVR2113.

Cosmetically on the front they look a little different, on the AVR2113 the
front USB port, HDMI port and audio/video RCA in jacks were found under a
removable trapdoor.

In this model the audio/video RCA jacks have been removed and the USB and HDMI
ports on the front - along with the Microphone and Headphone socket - are
clearly visible.

The Microphone's purpose is for test measurements so the system can work out
how best to adjust the speakers and their acoustic characteristics to your room
and a microphone along with stand comes with the unit.

Front controls are very simple, a row of 10 below the display, a source
selection dial on the left and a volume control on the right.

On the rear its a different story, connections and sockets all over the place
though I'm glad to see that Denon have chosen to place all the speaker
terminals - 14 in all - in one long row across the near bottom, they're out of
the way and easy to get to not to mention wire up.

There are dozens of RCA'S about the place, two of those are digital inputs, 2
are preamp outputs, many will befor composet and component video inputs and
outputs, two will be a fono input whilst the others will be analogue inputs for
older equipment, the second zone and so on.

The 10 HDMI ports run across the near top rear panel, 8 in and 2 out.

The difference here over the older model is the addition of the "Audio Return"
channel for the HDMI ports.

In the past I had to run two cables to my Television, a HDMI cable from the
HDMI out of the receiver - to feed the TV with the video from other sources -
and a toslink audio cable to take audio from the Television into the amplifier.

Now I only need that one output cable which - as well as feed the video output
from the Amp to the Television - will return the audio from the Television to
the receiver so I may here it, looking forward to trying that out.

Unlike the AVR2113 the AVRX3400H has an AM tuner along with the FM, FM was very
good on the 2113 so I doubt whether I'll be disappointed with the AVRX3400H. I
doubt the AM section will be much chop and I don't think I'll even bother
wiring up the loop antenna given I already have a DAB/FM/AM tuner ready and
waiting to plug into the system through one of the digital inputs - the
AVRX3400H has 4 of those -.

If home automation is your thing then it seems Denon have put quite a bit of
thought into this with the now all too familiar RS232 serial port making an
appearance for full programming and control of the receivers functions, 12 volt
triggering for compatibility etc.

Now to something I don't understand, why have Denon even bothered with Wi-Fi
connectivity? I understand that not everyone has the ability to wire directly
to Lan but frankly the two Wi-Fi antenna mounted on either side of the receiver
just get in the way and I can't see any way of removing those antenna, if there
were a way then I'd certainly be onto it as I prefer to hard wire.

The AVRX3400H can connect to either the 2.4GHZ or 5.0GHZ bands in a variety of
ways so I'm going to take some time to read through the not so well written
manual tonight to find out all about that.

So yep I'm inpatient for tomorrow to come to get this thing going.
I really didn't want to upgrade to the AVRX3400H at this point.
Unfortunately the AVR2113 died so I'm now making arrangements to have that
looked at. I had planned on an upgrade to an AVRX3400H or whatever was
available around Christmas Time or early next years but you know what they say,
the best laid plans are the ones to ruin.
