If you had a directory full of Excel and Word icons could they be confused? Hardly. Now imagine a directory full of Calc and Writer icons. It takes more than a glance to tell them apart. And I bet there's more than a few people that can't see any difference between Math and Writer documents. While changing some of the colors will help, the main problem is the little symbol that identifies the icon blends into the background. What really needs to be done is get the symbol to stand out.
