For Spellcheck, a word should be any string including one with a hard or soft
space in the middle. We might describe these as phrases, but they aren't always
that. Linguists count a string as a word whether it's set solid, hyphenated, or
with a space, because they behave grammatically like words. Some of them should
not be approved by a spell checker unless all parts are present. Common
instances include names. More than one space might occur. Examples:

von der Lippe (a family name)
stare decisis (a U.S. legal principle)

I looked in 4 good print dictionaries. None of them has _decisis_. None of them
has _der_ as a separate word other than as an abbreviation. Only one has _von_
and 3 don't; and the one that has it puts it into the context of personal names.
Writer's Spellcheck doesn't recognize _decisis_. However, I did not look in a
legal dictionary per se for _decisis_ by itself.

One authority on whether a word can have a space inside it is Webster's Third
New International Dictionary of the English Language Unabridged
(Merriam-Webster), Explanatory Notes, section 1.1 (at page 16a), and The Writing
of Compounds, sections 1.1 and 1.2 (at page 30a).

Since Writer's Spellcheck does accept _von_ and _der_, it seems likely they were
included because of their use with other strings, and not because of their use
in isolation. The better method would be to include them separately only if they
would be encountered with different neighbors, otherwise to include them only as
parts of words that are spelled with intervening spaces.

A word counted for good spelling does not have to be a word as defined by word
wrap.

The space that might be included in a word should be either hard or soft.

As an experiment, I typed stare decisis (without quote marks and with a soft
space) into an unsaved document and added it as a word to the standard
user-defined dictionary. Nonetheless, when I ran the spellcheck (by F7),
_decisis_ was displayed in the dialog as Not in dictionary, so that _stare
decisis_ was not automatically accepted.

I'm using OOo Writer 2.4.0 without Java Runtime Environment on Linux Fedora Core
4 on a Pentium 4 laptop. I didn't see this feature.

Sources: von der Lippe's name is at
http://www.valley.net/~townsend/Lippe.html, as accessed 9-13-08. Dictionaries:
W3 (above); Shorter OED ([4th ed.]); American Heritage (3d ed.); Random House
Webster's Unabridged (2d ed.).

Somewhat related: Issue 12541.

Thank you.

sergey_feo: indeed, PDF font embedding made by OOo is another strictly related
issue that is open since years. Just check this OOo issue tracker for PDF
fonts or similar query string and you'll find people who want an option in
order to *not* embed fonts into their PDF documents or to change what is
embedded. The arguments in favor or against it are the same ones we are
discussing here.

However, in OOo PDF there is also a *huge* problem with font substitution: you
believe to have included a specific font while OOo, really, has embedded Times
New Roman instead of Times, Arial instead of Helvetica or, even, fonts that
were used with a text style that is no longer utilized in the main content or
that belong to the same font family of a font that has not the embedding bit
set. Everything without warning from OOo, at least for the time being:

http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=72910

Sometimes, you discovers these glitches because the PDF size is strange or
grows out of control. Sometimes, you don't realize what is happening and simply
go ahead with your work. Maybe, breaching the font license.

Then, about font files that directly include license text: that is the right
approach. Nevertheless, there should be a technical mean that shows those terms
and clauses to the application end user in a human readable way.

For example, GPL license text says: An interactive user interface
displays “Appropriate Legal Notices” to the extent that it includes a
convenient and prominently visible feature that (1) displays an appropriate
copyright notice, and (2) tells the user that there is no warranty for the work
(except to the extent that warranties are provided), that licensees may convey
the work under this License, and how to view a copy of this License. If the
interface presents a list of user commands or options, such as a menu, a
prominent item in the list meets this criterion.

I know this legal stuff for fonts is extremely annoying and most people
doesn't care at all about it until a lawyer - or worse, an public attorney in
those countries in which software piracy is a criminal law affair - contacts
them.

Finally, it would be interesting to know *how* a font could be embedded by
respecting OpenDocument 1.2 specification. I'm not a developer and I'm just
curious.

Reading my comment carefully you will see that I CAN reproduce the problem with
page_break_problem.ods, but not with an own new document.
Sow we need someone else who can reproduce that problem with an own new document
so that we can be sure that that problem does not only exist for that special
document or dgdrummin's Mac.

There have been discussions about similar spelling of rare words and common
words for the French dictionary which I maintain.

Removing rare words suggest that these words have the same spelling as common
words. And people usually don't know how to write rare ones.

Rare words, in French, don't interfere so often with common-word mispellings,
but common words often appears similar to common-word misspellings. So the
problem is not so much about rarity.

Imho, this is the job of grammar checker to analyse sentences and indicate where
there is a possible confusion.
And this is already what LanguageTool does. We can write rules to prevent
confusion between two correct words. I don't know what has been done for
English, but rules about this problem have been created for French.

In some field enter text that includes line breaks (Strg+Enter), for example

  aaa
  bbb

Then highlight aaa, change the text color, and press Enter. Result is that the
whole field (that is, including bbb) changes text color.

It's possible to fix this wrong formatting manually, but obviously this doesn't
work as expected and causes unnecessary extra work.

Entering 1.8e6 in a field in calc enters it as text 1.8e6 not 1.8million

Locale set to Finland, that has the default decimal separator , but setting
for both currency and numbers have decimal separator in windows is set to .

To get 1.8 million need to enter 1,8e6 thus OOo 3.0RC1 seems to ignore the
operating system setting for decimal separator.

Operating system is Windows Vista basic SP1 x64 english.

Doing the same in Open Office 2.3 under Windows Xp, works correctly. (That is
entering 1.8e6 with locale set to Finland and decimal separator to . gives 1.8
million in the cell)

Installed 2.4.1 on the vista computer and getting same behavior. So likely the
problem is in getting the decimal separator from Vista as compared to XP.

OpenOffice.org 3.0.0 rc1 (Sun Microsystems build) on Linux (Fedora 9 i386)
cannot run the Python Hello World[1]. I assume this is an unintentional change,
and the consequence is breaking backwards computability or losing functionality.

In OpenOffice.org 3.0 Release Candidate 1 (build OOO300_m5) videos still don't
loop and additionally appear in a separate ActiveMovie window which is very
disturbing and inhibits OpenOffice to be used for showing movie sequences.

Hello andreasma, *,
I cannot confirm this behaviour with OOo RC1 under Debian SID/Experimental
AMD64. The only issue I see with the *ppt file is, that the animation is somehow
different than that one from the *odt file. This means, that - on my system -
the text Einseins neue Features: Text, der langsamer kommt, als man lesen
könnte... Doofe Effekte fly in too fast to read ... :( Could you try it again
with your version, please?

What do you want, is impossible using relative address references. When the cell
content of B3 is the formula =B2+1, then this mean in fact,Take the content
of the cell, which is one row before me and add 1. When now the content of B3
comes by sorting into the cell B1, it still has the meaning Take the content of
the cell, which is one row before me and add 1. But now in 'one row before me'
is nothing. That is the way relative addressing and sorting works actually.

Issue 81349 is indeed a feature request to get a new way of sorting. I'll solve
this issue as duplicate therefore.

To get a proper sorting, you must
1. use absolute address references
and
2. output the sorting to a new place or sort a linked copy of the list.
In this way the references point to the correct values in the unsorted list.

*** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 81349 ***

Hello milek_pl,
I have tested your attached document under Debian SID/Experimental AMD64 with
OOo 3.0 RC1 and it seems, that this issue is fixed. But as I have no winblows
installed nor their fonts, it could be some kind of font substitution issue here
at my system ... ;) So it would be nice, if you could test it with the RC1 of
3.0. If it is fixed there, it would be nice, if the issue could be closed. If it
is not fixed, see this message as a reminder ... ;)

luctur:

Again, sorry for my English :-)

I was really surprized by problem with font substitution in PDF export.
If licensing problems is so big at this stage - we can prolong this line and
then next question will be: is flag Print to file in print dialog legal or
illegal?..

Then, about font files that directly include license text: that is the right
approach.

How do you think: what is better: private e-mailing to font formats developers
with this request first or organizing community petitions without more ado? :-)
I can try this if I will have a time.

Finally, it would be interesting to know *how* a font could be embedded by
respecting OpenDocument 1.2 specification. I'm not a developer and I'm just
curious.

I do not know it for now also and just have hope that specification developers
foresaw this. But even if fonts embedding was not foreseen by OpenDocument
specification - its developers always can see how this feature realized in M$
OpenXML. I believe it supports font embedding because of old .doc formats did
this. This can be a way how OpenXML can be helpful for community :-)

thackert - Just opened this doc in OOo 3.0 RC1 /Windows and fonts are garbled
as they were before. The problem is that OOo defaults to win-1251 or something
while reading this file.

I opened the file in MS Word 2007 (fonts displayed correctly) and saved in Word
6 format - OOo 3.0 RC1 still garbles the fonts. For example, it displays ¹
instead of ą.

Shaun's fix is the best I've seen. It even eliminates the unnecessary xterm
window! (Of course, if you have an Intel Mac, you should just switch to
OpenOffice 3 for Auqa.)

His fix is to replace the openSoffice function in main.scpt with:

on openSoffice(aFile)
 if (atLeastOSXVersion(10, 5, 0)) then
-- if we have leopard, we don't need to manually start the X server first
set theCmd to sh (quoted form of (POSIX path of getOOProgramPath()
soffice))
do shell script theCmd aFile shellTerminator()
 else
  set theDisplay to startXServer()
if (theDisplay is equal to error) then
   return
  end if
  set theEnv to DISPLAY=  theDisplay   ; export DISPLAY;
set theCmd to sh (quoted form of (POSIX path of getOOProgramPath()
soffice))
do shell script theEnv theCmd aFile shellTerminator()
-- logEvent(open CMD: theEnv theCmd aFile)
 end if
end openSoffice

OOO version 2.4.1 on Mandriva 2008.1 with all patches.

A colleague sent me a MS Word (v 8.0 I believe) file that includes a few tables.
When I open it in Writer, the tables [borders] are missing. The text is just all
jammed together. If I open that same file using KWord, it works perfectly.
Using KWord, if I save the file as an MSWord type file, then open *that* file
using OOo, it works correctly.

I have discussed the issue in the OOCF, starting July 19 at 7:20 PM. A current
file which exhibits the problem is posted there in zip format.

Thanks,
JimR

It is poor gui design if the user has to read the help to learn how to dock a
panel.
I propose to add a Dock pane menu to each pane as it already exists in the
task pane to avoid any further irritation of users.
Otherwise this issue will be come up again and again.
See e.g. issue 34373 and 93886.

Issue does not appear resolved in build Release Candidate 1 (build OOO300_m5).
Open a document word document on Windows XP (USA) and note that all text is
underlined. Following this thread try to change language setting. On
Tools-Language the default language for selected text shows English(USA)
checked. But for Paragraph and all text this is not checked and the
application does not allow it to be checked.

Click more... under all text and language dialog comes up. Language is not
defaulted to English(USA), but the application does allow it to be changed.
However, that change does not fix the problem.

Choosing more on paragraph does not bring up the language dialog at all,
instead brings up the character dialog.

On rather odd behavior, the Tools-Language menus for all three options
(selected, paragraph, all text) show only two languages English(USA) and
Romainian. Seems an odd combo for a US install.

OS is Windows XP, SP3.

thank you, ezjay, for the tip about OO 3 for Aqua. just recently got an Intel
Mac and am trying the new
package out. i've only glanced at it so far, but the glance has been promising.
that's probably going to
by my fix.

good luck ironing this out though...thanks again...
