When updating tables of contents (ToC), legal tables of authorities (ToA),
indexes, tables of figures or illustrations, and similar, allow the preservation
of formats and edits. This will allow editing of the body without having to
recompile and re-edit and reformat the indexes and tables. That's especially
useful when yet another minor edit is discovered to be needed, especially one
found by perusing the index or table.

Technically, the method could be as follows: Compiling would create both an
invisible index, etc. that would not be edited/formatted and a visible copy that
could be edited/formatted. Entries from the visible would be associated with
corresponding entries in the invisible. Updating would cause only the invisible
copy to be updated, the visible copy would be automatically updated only for
entries that are identical, and all other entries in the visible copy would be
auto-tagged so the user could make decisions. By right-clicking a tagged entry,
a user might toggle between an exact copy of the entry from the invisible copy
and the non-updated visible entry; might keep either choice (i.e., freeze
toggling); and might bring up a dialog with checkboxes to keep formatting and/or
added edits (an example of an added edit would be an entry for "FDR..52"
that had been edited to "FDR (Roosevelt, Franklin Delano).52" and/or
integrated edits (such as "FDR" to "Roosevelt, Franklin Delano") with OK in the
dialog carrying out the update. By right-clicking in the table (index, etc.) but
away from a tagged entry, a similar dialog could appear but would be applicable
to the entire table, index, etc.

With indexes that collect several entries into single paragraphs, produced by
manual editing, such as:

Flowers, 32-88; petals, 42-47; thorns (for the Old English letter see
Linguistics) 71-74

a solution is to preserve the correspondences to the invisible index, in this
case separately for flowers, petals, and thorns.

I tested updating a ToC in Writer 2.4.0 without JRE on Gnome 2.10.0 but
witnessed losses of formatting and an added edit.

Thanks.

In Calc, when a specific color is attributed to text in a cell, and when lines
are sorted the color stays attributed to the cell in the same line number, the
color is not attached to the cell content which has been moved by the sorting
operation.

A forum poster has imported from Excel:
SMALL(INDEX(J2:AG2;;F2):AG2;1)

where F2 contains a number

which doesn't work in Calc, even as
SMALL(INDEX(J2:AG2;1;F2):AG2;1) (in case the missing parameter is a problem)

INDEX does return a reference - eg ROW(INDEX(...)) works OK.

I _think_ that the range operator ':' is probably not understanding the single
cell reference returned by INDEX(J2:AG2;1;F2)

I checked with "Ooo 3.0.0 RC1 Multilingual version ENGLISH UI WIN XP: [OOO300m5
(Build9350)]" and can confirm the reported effect for all OOo applications. OOo
will simply ignore non numeric inputs in the UI input panes (except decimal
point and units, of course) where numeric inputs are required. An error message
should appear instead of simply ignoring the input.

Same with "2.4.1 Multilingual version German UI WIN XP: [680m17(Build9310)]"

An other way to reproduce:

1. Open CALC
2. Menu 'Format -> Column -> Width'
3. + to mark all input pane contents
4. replace current value ba "1a2"
5.
   expected: Error message "numeric required"
actual: "1a2" will be corrected to "12mm" (if "mm" is current unit) without
   any warning.

I doubt that nobody reported this issue before, but I did not find any DUP.

A note about my system: It is running OpenSUSE 11.0 and the kernel is like this:

Linux notebook 2.6.26-4GB #4 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jul 24 23:58:11 CEST 2008 i686 i686
i386 GNU/Linux

Judging from the behaviour, I would suspect the following: There is some
cacheing of fonts in a LRU list or maybe in a hashtable. Both the european
digits and the arabic digits are chosen as eligible by some algorithm. The
problem can only show up on systems where fonts are actually installed which
provide arabic digits. The problem happens when the algorithm does a read access
on a font data structure to retrieve the font or the glyph for a particular
digit (or a particular formula), but some caching-subsystem makes the
read-access have side effects, like reordering an LRU list or something. The
next time the read access is done, a different font is returned.

An acceptable alternative is to discard the additional character before it goes
anywhere. That's especially useful when the dialog can cause a critical effect
so that ensuring the user has seen it is critical, and therefore any character
that might dismiss the dialog before it can have been seen must be neutralized.

My computer's speed is not an issue. The Pentium 4 processor runs at 1.2 to 2.0
GHz and RAM is, I think, 1 GiB.

The gedit problem used as an illustration that the problem is not particular to
OOo was not reproduced with a newer gedit version, although it occurred with an
older gedit, maintaining the point.

As I post this, the form shows the version as 1.0.0 rather than 2.4.0, but I
don't know why. In case that was deliberate by someone, I'm leaving it that way,
but noting that I didn't select it.

I can confirm this problem for OOO300m7 (Build:9354) (retrieved from

and related packages).

In my case, some formulas have arabic digits while some formulas have european
digits.
For subsequent export runs, the "arabicness" of the digits changes. It looks
like the "arabicness" is random or depends on the particular time of the export.

@aaudu: Please read the examples in
http://www.openoffice.org/scdocs/ddIssues_EnterModify.html#priority
to see, that it can never be a P2 issue, if a animation effect doesn't work as
fast and smooth as you like.

Workaround: Use a writer document with customized page size and insert it as OLE
in impress. If you do not embed it, but link to it, you can edit the formula if
you open it in writer.

When entering formulas in Impress, the only way to enter them is as objects
separate from text. Many slides that use formulas require formulas that flow
with the text (inline formulas). OpenOffice Writer supports this, but
OpenOffice Impress does not.

This is a major nuisance and makes OpenOffice extremely tedious for
presentations involving mathematical formulas. Many people in the sciences use
LaTeX for the simple reason that formulas in Impress are still such a pain.

(I searched the issue tracker and couldn't find an existing issue filed on this.
I'm amazed that there isn't one; this is such a fundamental problem with
Impress, and so many people are struggling with it.)

Hi,

Thanks for addisional info. I could reproduce the issue now by using mouse for
scrolling instead of key board 'down arrow'.

Updating my previous commnet:
Summary:
'Presentation: 'Table Properties --> Font Combo' - Selecting font size by
scrolling down the combo using mouse is giving unexpected result'.

Steps to replicate:

1) File --> New --> Presentation
2) Insert --> Table --> 5 columns / 2 Rows
3) Keep the cursor on the first cell & press 'Table Properties' button
on 'Table' popup menu which opens 'Font' setting.
4) Default is 'Arial/Regular/18'. On the 'Size' combo, scroll up the combo and
select font size 6.
5) Now scroll down the font sizes list using mouse and try selecting size '96'
at the bottom of the list.
6) When we try clicking on '96', the combo autoscrolls up and selects 10.5 as
size.

I have also attached a small video clip showing replication of issue.

Observations:

1. If we use key board 'down arrow' to scroll down, font selection works fine.

2. We can see 6 list items in the combo. When we scroll down the list till the
end, '96' takes 6th position among visible items. The system instead of
selecting 96, it selects 10.5 which is at 6th position from previously selected
item (i.e 6).

3. When we select a list item (background changes to blue)
and scroll down the list, the current list item pointed by mouse is not
autoselected.
We can avoid this if we can auto select list item pointed by cursor during
scrolling and should not wait for mouse click.

Hello andreschnabel, *,
I have tested the file with 3.0 RC2 under Debian SID/Experimental AMD64. I
cannot confirm the wrong date format here, so it seems to be fixed. Could you or
someone else can test it with a different OS/architecture, please?

@andreasma: Just out of interest: Why did you attach the screenshot with the
number format? Was there something wrong, too? I do not see anything wrong
there, but maybe I am wrong ... ;)

@amy2008: Could you attach a screenshot from M$O as well, so we see how it
should look like? And please remove the spaces in the filename the next time :)

HTH
Thomas.
P.S.: I know this issue is targeted "OOo later", but maybe it was fixed
inbetween ... ;)

Hi,

I've checked in m7 unter KDE (Ubuntu).
Wrong:
"Benutzen Durchsuchen ..."
Correct:
"Benutzen Sie Durchsuchen ..."

And the last sentence is not ok. (See screenshot.)

I can confirm the defect for WinXp. It is connected with hardware acceleration.
If it is disabled, the text is shown and the animation runs, if hardware
acceleration is enabled the text is not shown. Therefore it might have the same
reason as issue 93543.

If you use a table to insert a lot of text (for example paragraph by paragraph
translation in two-column style) the orphan/widow control of the table content
has no effect.

Tables offer an option to not allow row break, but this will produce huge white
spaces if the rows contain long text.

Other issue (84592) is not about exactly the same issue.

In my opinion the paragraph style should have influence on the table brak, or a
additional table attribute should be added.

I am on a Windows XP machine, Service Pack 3.

It was found on a blank presentation so there is really nothing to submit.

You said you used the Down Key to scroll down. I used the mouse to scroll down.
Such as after I clicked the 6, I clicked and held the scroll bar and moved my
pointer down to the bottom of the page. Then I clicked the 96.

Also I saw the bug before I even hit the OK button.

Raj (rkahuja): 09/28/2008 : Tried replicating the bug on Build 9354 (Version
OOO300m7) with Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit as Operating System and was able
to replicate the bug. Alternate Summary / steps to replicate the bug:

Bug Summary: Animated Text not visible in slideshow view.

Steps to Replicate:

Step 1: Create a Text Box using Text Box Tool on the Drawing Tool Bar.
Step 2: Add some text into the text box
Step 3: Select (hightlight) the text and right click to select Text option from
the menu that appears.
Step 4: Click on Text Animation Tab.
Step 5: Click 'Scroll through” options under Text Animation Effects and select
direction as 'To left' (Arrow sign leading towards left side)
Step 6: Click “OK” button.
Step 7: Click anywhere outside the text box and observe the animated text
(scrolling from right to left in this case)
Step 8: Hit F5 or select “Slideshow” from View Menu and observe the animated
text is not visible instead a scrolling black box is visible.

Tried other text animation effects like blink, Scroll back and forth, scroll-in
etc and observed similar behaviour.

Text Animation being a basic requirement in any presentation and is extensively
used while in slideshow view (while projecting / reviewing presentations) thus
the bug is recomended for a Priority 2 fix (Affects a large customer base).

[sw-issues] [Issue 17169] Add automatic non breaking space before certain punctuation marks (for F rench)

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Sep 28 13:42:07 +

I was surprised, when I tried Open Office, to discover that American quotation
marks are transformed into French quotation marks (unbreakable space included)
but that no unbreakable space is inserted before double/high punctuation.

I was surprised, in part because I have been using Microsoft Word for years and
never had to think about it (and because Open Office presents itself as a
functional alternative to Microsoft Office), and in part because the French
Ministry of Culture recently switched its thousands of computers from Microsoft
Office to Open Office (which seems to be something rather significant, in
regards to Open Office's official recognition as a better alternative to
Microsoft Office).

I know there's a patch that allows for unbreakable spaces to be inserted
automatically, but that works clumsily with texts that mix French and English
(which may seldom be an issue for most American users, but is not an infrequent
one for many a French user).

OOo 3.0 RC2 FR in French (France)

Steps to reproduce:
1/ open test file for FR TCM 109171 :
http://www.sunvirtuallab.com:8001/sample_docs/109171/generic_fr.ppt
2/ click on autospellcheck button. Almost every words become underlined because
paragraphes are formatted in English (USA).
3/ select the text area "la révolution est terminée" on the first slide, right
click on an underlined word and choose "Paragraph is French". Unselect text area
by clicking outside.
4/ save the file in ODF format by File > save as...
5/ reload the document, **click on autospellcheck button**
6/ go to 2nd slide and select the text area (Elle offre au regard...)
7/ right click on an underlined word
-->> CRASH

If I launch in a terminal I get error message :
pure virtual method called
terminate called without an active exception

I have sent 2 error reports. First one has ID r2xjyuc.

French tester said that problem is already present in OOo 2.4.1 so I didn't
change priority. I don't have 2.4.1 on this computer to confirm.

No crash if I do same steps with native ODF document.

Best regards

I checked with "Ooo 3.0.0 RC1 Multilingual version English UI WIN XP: [OOO300m5
(Build9350)]" and can confirm the reported effect. Expansion of table scheme is
limited by screen borders. Some scroll mechanism might extend possibilities of
this insert tool.

I only see a very small importance for this issue, because insert table from
menu is without this limitation. User experience team might decide.

If you placed the writer-toolbar with the table-icon at the bottom of the window
and maximize this window, you can't use the icon for inserting tables in writer
prperly.

The Cause: You can pull the mouse only downwards electing the number of rows, so
you can insert only about 10 rows at the bottom of the windows/screen.

FIX: Electing of rows with the table icon must be possible upwards, if the
toolbar is a the bottom of the window.

@grahamperrin: What setting do you mean exactly, I do not find these settings
(using a German installation here, so this is a bit tricky to find...). Do you
mean the Mac control panel and there language settings, or OOo settings? Could
you give me the exact way to get to the settings?

BTW: The key assignment in the OOo keyboard settings says Apple-left/right is
used to jump wordwise. This is obviously wrong, as alt-left/right is used and
Apple-left/right is used to jump to the beginning/end of the line. (But you
cannot assign the alt key at all there... Might be that the famous missing alt
key assignment issue which is also there on PCs plays a trick on us here - why
not finally fix that one?).

My report 49335 is a duplicate of this one here (sorry). I'm just going to mark
it as such. To repeat what I said there in addition to the report here:
Shift-Ctrl-Left/Right mistakenly has the function of Shift-Alt-Left/Right on my
Mac. I'm using a Macbook Pro 2.16 GHz here.

Abstracted from my comment today in Issue 93631

 1. launch OOo 3 release candidate 2

 2. command-o to present the open dialogue

 3. select and open a compatible file

 4. watch carefully: at the foot of the start centre window, in the grey,
something like a status bar
appears.

On its own, this is a very minor cosmetic bug, probably negligible, P5.

However: if this is contributory to Issue 93631, which may be noticed (albeit
overlooked) by _most_ users of Mac OS
X, then priority for this might be raised from P5.

(Thinking: first impressions.)

= Observation =

 1. launch OOo release candidate 2

 2. command-o to present the open dialogue

 3. select and open a compatible file

 4. watch carefully: at the foot of the start centre window, in the grey,
something like a status bar
appears

— and as that status bar (or or whatever it is) appears, so the central
(blue/white etc.) portion of the
start centre shifts up, correspondingly

— and as it shifts up, so the four icons re-draw properly.

Demoting to P4 as I guess that the developers have better things on which to
focus around RC 2 time :)

I forced quit from RC 2 whilst editing a new document.

Launched OOo.

Declined the invitation to recover.

When an empty text document appeared, I clicked the file menu but then decided
to not use that
option.

Instead, I clicked on the 'Open' icon in the toolbar.

The dialogue appeared, and I could dismiss the dialogue.

No crash.

The (May 2008) steps to reproduce are vaguely familiar to me, I might have
reported something similar
(probably not identical) that seemed to affect OOo of that era _only after_ a
crash … i.e., _only if_
invitation to recover was timely.

nekobito, please, can you reproduce the symptoms in OpenOffice.org 3.0 Release
Candidate 2 (build
OOO300_m7)? That version or something more recent should be referenced from
.

I guess that to test: you might force OOo to quit, whilst it has open a new or
previously saved text
document with unsaved edits.

If the issue persists then please change the 'Version:' here from 1.0.0 to
match the version with which
you're testing.

Thanks
Graham

This bug, or something very similar, remains in release candidate 2 of OOo 3.

 1. select a word

  — cursor places itself at the right-hand end of the word

 2. press the left key.

= Expected =

Cursor should place itself at the beginning of the word.

= Bug =

Cursor moves only one character away from the right-hand end of the word.

= Priority =

Very surprising, very odd behaviour. IMO the priority should be raised, to P2.

Possibly irrelevant, but if keyboard layouts are a concern then the tail end of
this comment may be of interest:

I find that some of my preference files are mishandled whenever I restart Mac
OS X.

Most noticeable and frustrating with
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
— preferences for sort order, LDAP, template etc. are lost every time.

Noticeable but less frequent with
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
— preferences for Spaces are lost occasionally.

Very recently, following a hardware repair (25th September change of main board
in my first generation MacBook
Pro 17") noticeable with:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist
— references to all keychains are lost every time

~/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
— preferences for Character Palette, Keyboard Viewer and British are lost at
least once.

^^ that last line, keyboard input-related ^^
