I think this is a mixed report, involving both an error and a usability issue.

In terms of the error, according to the help that I see in version m7,

Zoom In
Displays the slide at two times its current size.
You can also select the Zoom In tool and drag a rectangular frame around the
area you want to enlarge.

I create a new presentation, type some text, then zoom out. The
slide-as-displayed shrinks to half its size. Zoom out twice more and the
displayed slide is tiny.

Now, I try to zoom out. If the help is correct, the displayed slide should grow
larger. However, it does not. That is, I click on the down-arrow beside the
magnifying glass, this brings up a box with several magnifying glasses. I click
on the oe with the plus sign (zoom in) and there is no obvious effect. The
actual effect is that the cursor has changed shape to a magnifying glass,
allowing me to select an area and then zoom to expand that area. This implements
the second specified way that zoom works, but not the first way, which (as
described) is the inverse of zoom out.

= Abstract =

An .odt file that is open and actively edited by one user of Mac OS X can be
concurrently opened and
edited by other users of Mac OS X.

Other users' edits are lost (over-written?) without warning.

Might this be because the file is not marked as open/busy?

= Detail =

The other users are _not_ aware of the first user's edits in progress; their
opening of the file is not
forced to read only.

As the other users save their edits to the file, no error is presented.
Everything appears fine.

As the first user subsequently saves their edits to the same file, no error is
presented. Everything
appears fine.

In fact, there is no trace of the edits that were supposedly saved by the other
users.

= Environment =

Mac OS X 10.5.5.

= Background =

AFAIR I first noticed this bug whilst troubleshooting under issue 94591
following a comment at
GullFOSS concerning multiple users.

= See also =

Issue 93741, I shan't guess whether what I'm reporting is related to echatzik's
report.

= Priority =

Initially P2,

User data is corrupted in an easy-to-encounter way

However: if the nature of the bug is as I suspect, then I'm tempted to suggest
P1.

Files that are open and/or busy _without being marked/recognisable as such_ may
cause problems to
other applications in ways that are very unpredictable, very difficult to
troubleshoot.

[sc-issues] [Issue 5658] Spreadsheet thinks a number is a string (text)

I think there is a fallacy in the thinking; it ignores the real-world workflow
that you will often see. The number of people who get a wrong result in Excel is
going to be minuscule, because just like regular software projects, people do
test spreadsheets.

In the business world, spreadsheets are designed in Excel. They are tested in
Excel. Then they are distributed to the sales force, who fills them out - in
Excel. The spreadsheet designers put strings into formulas - it's rarely the end
user who accidentally adds quotes when entering values.

Because all the testing happens in Excel, you won't see a problem.

Then they are sent out to me. Who opens it in OpenOffice - and gets a wrong
result.

And movement towards a resolution... - well, when after 6.5 years there are
STILL people arguing that Excel compatibility doesn't matter, I'm not as
optimistic as you are.

In September 2008 I wrote:

The (May 2008) steps to reproduce are vaguely familiar to me, I
might have reported something similar (probably not identical)
that seemed to affect OOo of that era _only after_ a crash …

Ah, now I realise why I couldn't find my report in the openoffice.org area.

http://bugzilla.neooffice.org/bug.php?op=showbugid=3145

*** crash following cancellation of document recovery ***

leads to
http://bugzilla.neooffice.org/bug.php?op=showbugid=3144

soffice.bin crashes when applying a bullet, or
 scrolling through a fonts menu

After first pointing the finger of suspcion at APE, Silk and other
hacks/enhancements, the bug there was closed with
this note:

The fact that the crashing stopped after cleaning the font
caches and disabling certain fonts is consistent with the
location of the crash (the crash was occurring in an internal
Mac OS X function related to font cache management) so I think
we can conclude that you had a corrupt font or corrupt font
 cache.

Now, as I review my (11:23 AM 07-04-2008) note at
http://bugzilla.neooffice.org/bug.php?op=showbugid=3144
I wonder whether there was truly corruption, or whether there was
simply some _discrepancy_ between

 a) fonts _actually cached on disk_

and

 b) applications' notions of what _might_ or_should_ be available from such
caches

-- bear in mind that a few days prior to the crashing behaviours, I had used
Apple Font Book to weed supposedly
duplicate fonts.

(If my thoughts/expressions here are becoming fuzzy, sorry -- I'm not a
developer!)

Now, re-focusing on OOo:

 1. does OOo keep its own cache of fonts?

If so, then:

 2. upon which sources are the OOo cache based?

 3. is there maybe some discrepancy between what OOo _expects_ to find in
cache(s), and what's _actually_ cached?

In my experience, issues relating to fonts can manifest themselves in very
unexpected ways...

Regards
Graham

And that - the resistance that some have to accepting this as an Excel
compatibility issue - is why I thnk we need to re-focus on this as a
consistency issue. =MID(A1;1;LEN(A1))+0 works, yet MID clearly returns a text
value. Please, if anyone can give me a god reason why =A1+0 should behave any
differently to =MID(A1;1;LEN(A1))+0?

I copied OpenOffice.org.app to
/Applications/OpenOffice.org.app
then tested using three different users, fast user switching, in this order:

1. gjp22 (my usual Mac OS X account with administrator privileges)

2. Guest Account (an environment in which preferences etc. are sure to be fresh)

3. centrimadmin (another Mac OS X account with administrator privileges)

= Summary =

I can not reproduce the crash described in sven's comment at GullFOSS.

The description of crashing may be interpreted as reminiscent of some other,
older bug that tended to present
_only_ if OOo had _previously_ crashed for the user.

Imagine I want to enter the string 'this is a test surrounded by single quotes'

In Open Offcie, I'll have to enter
''this is a test surrounded by single quotes'

I have to double the first quote (since the first one is used to indicate that
the content of the cell is a String. So far so good.

Hwever, when it comes to edit this value (with F2 for example), the editor
displays only
'this is a test surrounded by single quotes'

When the modifications are done, the content of the cell then becomes
this is a test surrounded by single quotes' (WITHOUT leading single quote)

I suggest that when one edits a string starting with a single quote, the editor
should contains
''this is a test surrounded by single quotes'

Is it planned to add this feature in OpenOffice.org 3.x?

This is a very basic functionality which should be possible in a productivity
office suite.

No, scrolling with the slider in the scrollbar still produces wrong wrapping. I
noticed that in a document with many sections (58), after scrolling by dragging
the slider the text in some sections is no longer distributed evenly although
this property is still marked for the section. I use German OOo3.0RC3 on WinXP.

Hi. It would be really great to produce those soft-shadows with OOo (esp. with

@hfinger: I added your proposal and a rough estimation of pros/cons to the wiki
site (see link below). If we want to further discuss the topic printing outside
this issue, I would like to invite you to the UX discuss mailing list (UX = User
Experience).

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Notes2_Design_Printing#Proposal_.22Print_Notes_Inside_Body_Text.22

Thanks for having a look at the page - this helps a lot. Here, some comments
from my point-of-view:
I don't think the alternative of Notes embedded in a bulleted
 list are a problem [...]
The reviewer takes care of both the Notes' content and formatting. This should
be preserved, even when printed out. (E.g. somebody copies some kind of ASCII
table to the Note).

W.r.t. to overlong notes, [...] may I suggest that you
temporarily increase the para spacing or line spacing [...]
Good idea, but only if people really know that the layout is altered
automatically. Unless we do not have a Normal mode like in Word, people might
not be aware of this. And, for overlong Notes we already do have this kind of
behavior - page wise, not paragraph wise (pls refer to the mockups).

I do not like the idea of repeating a page referred
to be notes of greater length than the page. [...]
Yes, this is an edge case which is just needed for being robust against long
Notes. Most people might never know that this kind of behavior exists, but I'm
open for better proposals. But, I will keep in mind that there is a need for
better recognizability of repeated pages.

I don't think that there is any particular necessity to preserve the page
formatting next to the notes. [...]
In rare cases yes (possibly this rare case is your standard case). Normally,
users rely on the formatting in WYSIWYG editors.

Thanks for your comments. Bye!

When opening an UTF-8 text written in persian, the points move to the other side
of the line (that is, form the left side, to the right one):

ie, if I would write it with latin letters, it would be something like that:

. foo bar baz

is mapped to

foo bar baz .

with the point at the right end, instead on at the left one.

For more information, please, see the original bug report and the screenshots.

Thanks.

Hello,

Knowing the mobile phones and function dictionary and the tools for
programming, Can you make an extension that when a word trap, will look in the
dictionary and automatically insert and displays a list to the user, as and
as that on tape, the limited choice. If the word is found, you can select and
insert it with the Enter key. This function should be dependent on language
and spelling dictionary

I'm try to create an extension for a secondary dictionary, but I found that is
impossible in OOo 3.0

I have write the extension for the Italian dictionaries, in witch there is the
primary orthographic dictionary for Italian language (it_IT.dic it_IT.aff).
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/Dict_it_IT

I have also a secondary dictionary (the Italian surname dictionary:
it_IT_cognome.dic it_IT_cognome.aff) and in OOo 2.x and 1.x you can define and
use a secondary dictionary in dictionary.lst file:

DICT it IT it_IT
DICT it IT it_IT_cognome

And all work correctly.

You can find the MySpell/HunSpell surname dictionary here:
http://linguistico.sf.net/wiki/doku.php?id=dizionario_cognomi_italiani

Now this feature is missing in OOo 3.0 and so all Italian users of the surname
dictionary cannot use it anymore :-(
I think this is a defect because this is a featured that have been take away
from OOo 3.0.

I'm also creating others secondary dictionaries (medical, astronomical, ...) and
all they will be unusable with OOo 3.0. I think that also others people have
created secondary dictionaries ... all useless now :.(

I have read this
(http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Extension_Dictionaries):
88888888888
You must have at most one dictionary of any type for each language in your
extension!
That is only one for each format DICT_SPELL, DICT_HYPH, DICT_THES per locale.
Otherwise, if for example you have two different spelling dictionaries with
different content, they will all be used at the same time(!), which is most
likely not want you want. And thus you have taken away the choice for the user.
88888888888

but I cannot use only the surname dictionary (it_IT_cognome) ... it complete the
it_IT dictionary, and so I must install and use all two together.

Please add again the possibility to use secondary dictionary in OOo 3.0.
Secondary dictionaries are a very valuable OOo features; if you take away they
you make unhappy users.

Ciao
Davide

First of all, sorry for my bad English.
I will try to use some non-latin characters in this post - so, sorry if it will
like garbage on your screen :-)

Subj. The bug has 2 aspects.

1. When I try to open file with command like:
soffice ./Прог_по_истокам_5кл_2008-2009.odt
- I see a message
/media/sdb5/.../Прог_по_истокам_5кл_2008-2009.odt не существует,
where ... is garbage that Writer made from cyrillic characters and не
существует is does not exist. I will attach the screenshot of this window.
When I press OK in this window - it reopens again. When I press OK in second
window - it closes and Writer terminates.

2. Please see at screenshot of dialog for open file. This garbage is not normal
- this was cyrillic letters :-)

This bug was not exist in OpenOffice 2, only in 3. I set priority to P2 - higher
than default - because is very uncomfortable to rename files and to move it in
temporary directories without cyrillic characters in names for editing with
Writer 3.0rc3.

About my system configuration.
OS is Slackware 12.1,
locale is ru_RU.utf8.

There is a bug in Calc, writing dBase files. Open the dBase file liz-db.dbf (see
attachment) in Calc and try File, Save as with a new file name. (It's the same
with File, Save, but that destroys the file.)

You finally get the error message Error saving document liz-db: There couldt
not be established a connection to this file. (A little bit more exact in
German: Fehler beim Speichern der Datei liz-db: Es konnte keine Verbindung zu
der Datei hergestellt werden. (s. Attachment 2).

I support this request and any other enhancement to make adding multiple custom
animations easier. An alternative (or complementary) solution would be a one-
step hotkey for adding some (previously configured) custom animation to
whatever is selected.

Sorry, I forgot to mention:

XP Pro SP 3 with all patches, OOo300m8.

As André Schnabel mentioned in his mail of 26 Sep 2008 21:29:23 +0200 in
[EMAIL PROTECTED], the error can be reproduced. After writing the file as odf
(he probably meant ods) it can be stored as dBase file.

But when I save as ods, open the ods file again and try to save it as a dBase
file, I get the error and the message.

In cws locales31:

offapi/com/sun/star/i18n/CalendarFieldIndex.idl 1.12.128.1
i18npool/inc/calendar_gregorian.hxx 1.16.24.1
i18npool/source/calendar/calendar_gregorian.cxx 1.34.24.1
unotools/inc/unotools/calendarwrapper.hxx 1.10.24.1
unotools/source/i18n/calendarwrapper.cxx 1.15.24.1
svtools/source/numbers/zforfind.cxx 1.51.96.1

Also checked the cases of issue 76623, they're still good.

Note that the case of TZ=Finland/Helsinki mentioned above would be
TZ=Europe/Helsinki instead. However, I could not reproduce a faulty behavior
with the date given or around. Also dumping calendar internals around that date
did not reveal timezone or DST transitions.

When holding (alt) to block highlight, scrolling is extremely fast and
uncontrollable. Users should be able to control the speed as well as scroll
with the mouse wheel.

Thanks very much for fixing the NatNum issues.
Yes, I was building against ICU 4.0, so that might explain the build problems
for collation.

Maybe the fix for Issue 88440 makes this feature works more reliable, but I
still think it works by luck.

Just re-reading your comment, ES, this is nothing to do with the HTML component.
This is to do with saving a document as a text file. While the W3C warning is
only an annoyance, would it take much to make adding the BOM optional when
saving as a .txt file?
