but If I explict the default values it works correctly.

Compatibility issue: in M$/Excel 97 it works without the defaults.

Translation note: INDIRIZZO is the Italian translation of ADDRESS

I'm working in designing a chart for some data. If I choose non-3D, then the
default settings produce a fine result for data labels (the values themselves).
However, if I choose 3D, I have found no way that the data label is placed
outside the colored draw, so it can be viewed regardless any color setting you
choose and is not obscured.

Anyway, it looks like choosing other options for the placement of labels like
afuera (I guess the english name should be outside), arriba (above)
don't produce any difference. Maybe outside was intended for this and, for
some reason, doesn't work properly, in whose case just reviewing the way this
option is doing its work is enough and solves the problem.

Furthermore (maybe another issue), I miss a way to manually relocate every label
with the mouse (this can be done in MS Excel), which would also solve the
problem.

This bug is very dangerous. I work in a school (400 children) and I want to
upgrade openoffice 2.4.1 to 3.0, but this bug has stopped me. Fontwork are VERY
important for children and due to this bug we have to use 2.4.1 and wait for a
solution.
In all wordprocessors we can select objects with a click (without CTRL): a
normal user cannot understand why in Openoffice this is not possible. He will
think that this is a bug (and this is really a bug). The problem is in OO, not
in the help!

Alla schools in the worlds will have problems due to this bug: please correct it
in the 3.0.1. This is a very bad pubblicity for OO.

Hi,
The Save Auto Recovery information every X minutes allows office to save some
information used to recover in the case of an unexpected termination. Yet a on a
normal exit, such as the one which occurs when clicking Discard changes on
closing the document, those recovery informations are not involved and
discarded.

Lots of users wrongly assumes that their document has been fully auto-saved
every X minutes, thus may very much click discard on the last closing dialog
(wrongly believing that they only discard the changes done since the last
auto-save). In that case, many hours of work can be lost. Even the option
Always create backup copy won't help.

It should be crystal clear that this auto recovery options is NOT an autosave
option. It should in fact either be moved to some advanced settings, or
replaced/seconded by some system which fully save backup copy every X minutes.
(an unambiguous status-bar message when those recovery infos are saved would be
nice too)

Thanks

There are a number of problems with bullets in OpenOffice 3.0 that this bullet
revamping should address. There's a discussion about it going on in the forums
at http://bit.ly/1yOu3, and I've attached picture in that forum comparing the
problems between 3.0, 2.4, and MS Word.

In short, OpenOffice 3.0 handles bullets made in MS Word doc files better than
it handles making them itself or even odt files. Bullets made in a 3.0 writer
file, whether odt or doc, are not visible after the first level. That same 3.0
odt file opened in 2.4 shows all the bullets, but they're all flushed left.
That same 3.0 doc file opened in 2.4 looks like the 3.0 file -- no visible
bullets after the first level. However, that same 3.0 doc file opened in MS
Word looks fine.

A doc file with bullets made in MS Word appears correctly in 2.4 and 3.0.

One would expect that OpenOffice could at least handle bullets in its own file
format.

Thank you guys for testing.
I was able to build a patch for the string object issue, attachment for
discussion follows.
It seems that the image palette had unwanted spaces and line terminators, even
though “Example 4.10” in PDF 1.4 spec, page 200 seems to allow spaces. The
validators seem to check strictly for the length: “...the string should be 768
bytes long.” (I guess it must be read as “..the string _must_ be 768 bytes
long.”).
I'm still working on the array stuff problem.
It seems lurking somewhere in the PDF tag structure generation
(PDFWriterImpl::emitStructureAttributes), that emitted an array of over 12k
elements for the document pointed out in #desc7.

@sos - Could you help me out here. I really don't believe you meant to log this
against OOo version 1.0.0?

However, I did try to reproduce this using OOo 3.0 and having a column named
'type' did not cause a problem with the query component or the reporting
component. I tested this with the internal HSQLdb database only.

So - If there is more detail you can provide please do so in a timely fashion,
otherwise I see no option but to mark this issue as invalid.

No matter which program is open, regardless of whether Quickstarter is running
on its own, alongside or disabled, soffice.bin uses all spare processor and
large amounts of RAM (e.g. oscillation between 400 and 460 MB for a single 400
KB presentation). OOo programs become slow to respond. There are about five
seconds after starting an OOo program, before the problem arises.

Problem resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling OOo 2.4

Hi,

when creating a text box with German umlauts, turning it, and then exporting
it to PDF, the exported file is not the same as the OOo input:

lines are exported with correct orientation up to the first umlaut character.
That character and subsequent ones are exportet with 0 degree turn.

I'll attach two files: ODG with said input, and a PDF with cancelled
orientation.

Extra bughunting aid: this worked correctly with OOo 2.0.4.7, but neither
worked on 2.4.0.x nor on 3.0.0.

Greetings,

Stefan Winter

In Openoffice 3.0 under Fedora, opening up base forms takes quite a while to
render. The form is hooked up to a mysql backend database via JDBC but I dont
think thats the cause (though I do mention this just in case...).

The form Im trying to load has about 60 textfields (a few but reasonable by
database standards) and contains a sub-query at the bottom half.

When double-clicked, the form window appears, its window border being visible
while its inners being transparent, it then sits and waits for five seconds on
the count as if its performing some type of calculation, then it bursts to
resize, center and display itself quickly. I checked out my CPU usage during
that time and it spikes to 100%. I also have quite a bit of free memory left so
I dont think its swap related.

Though, to get the most obvious questions out of the way, I have an ATI Radeon
9600 and Direct Rending is enabled. 3d games work pretty good, compiz is off and
Im running an AMD Athlon 64 3000 processor, 1.5gig memory. I imagine these specs
would be reasonable. I dont think its rendering but some large pre-calculation
stalling it.

The more controls you seem to put on a form, the worse it seems to get. I
created another form with only a few controls and it does open remarkably
faster. I tried taking off the sub-form leaving 60 fields and its still
relatively slow. It would appear to be the Quantity of controls that it doesnt
seem to like. As you add controls, it starts to really get slow.

As far as openoffice tells me, Im running Java 1.6.0_07.

To get people involved in improving OOo, I think it is very advisable to add a
link to Issuezilla to the About/Info Dialogue. This is common sense for KDE
applications and most Gnome Apps as well.

The File - Latest/History feature is very usefull. But it doesn't work as it
should: Only files that were opened lately are displayed. Files that were
created during the last session, and stored, do not occur! This is a bug, I
think.

In some posts above we talk that font files that directly include license text
is a good thing.

I discover :-) that TTF font files can carry full license text (by non-standart
way) and this is no necessarily to ask TTF format developers to add license
fields into TTF specification.
This is about Bitstream Vera Fonts (http://www.gnome.org/fonts/):

Note that the Vera copyright is incorporated in the fonts themselves. The
License field in the fonts contains the copyright license as it appears below.
The TrueType copyright field is not large enough to contain the full license, so
the license is incorporated (as you might think if you thought about it) into
the license field, which unfortunately can be obscure to find. (In pfaedit,
see: Element-Font Info-TTFNames-License).

The technical details can be found here:
http://developer.apple.com/textfonts/TTRefMan/RM06/Chap6name.html (table 42
Name Identifiers, NameID codes 0, 13 and 14). We can see that fonts developers
use License field for license text but this field should be written in plain
language, not legalese according to specification because of Copiright notice
field is too small. Future OpenOffice should know this trick.

I surmise that TTF can have other formats.

The situation with Type 1 fonts is not so good and far more compex.
I found 3 file types related to Type 1 on my system: .afm, .pfa and .pfb.
This was found in X11 font directory. It is possible that some other formats
exists in CUPS, ghostscript and xpdf directories.

The specification for .afm is here:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/font/pdfs/5004.AFM_Spec.pdf

It discribes only optional Notice field (on page 26) that can contain Font
name trademark or copyright notice.
I view real .afm files on my machine and see short copyright info in Comment
and Notice fields.

I am not sure that specification for .pfa is this:
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/font/T1_SPEC.PDF

This specification mentions Notice field but not describes it (at least I did
not found description). In real .pfa files I see short copyright info in comment
(starting from %%) and in Notice field.

I did not found specification for .pfb format at this time.

The CCF format for Type 1 also exists, specification is:
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/font/5176.CFF.pdf

It contains Notice and Copyright fields. Earlier versions of this document
contained section 18 Copyright and Trademark Notices but it was removed
according changelog. I did not found description of this fields in modern
version of document.

The .pfm files also exists in nature. The document (not specification AFAIK)
describing this format is here:
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/font/5178.PFM.pdf

It describes dfCopyright field in table 1 Header. This field is 60 byte
string, null padded so it can not contain full license text but can contain
license name (for example, GPL + font exception).

I surmise that Type 1 fonts can have yet more formats.

Some places with links to specifications:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_1_font
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/opentype/index_font_formats.html

@wyth: I noticed the same issue after upgrading from 2.4 to 3.0. However, when
you have deeply nested lists, there will be a bullet (black circle) on levels 1,
4, 7, etc.

Maybe this is a font issue?

I don't quite understand why the perfectly reasonable default bullets from 2.4
were replaced with something clearly broken...

By the way, I run OpenOffice.org on Ubuntu Hardy. I installed it following these
instructions:
http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/10/14/install-openofficeorg-30-in-ubuntu-804-and-810/

[framework-issues] [Issue 20370] Q-PCD MSInteroperability-3 3: embedd fonts into the document

This is current Open Document specification:
http://docs.oasis-open.org/office/v1.1/OS/OpenDocument-v1.1.pdf.
I did not found direct phrases like fonts embedding in it. Please have a look.

If Open Document specification really does not support fonts embedding - then
OpenXML can be an example:
http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-376.htm.
I found explicit phrases about fonts embedding in part 1, paragraph 15.2.12.

I tried to open an XLS file in Openoffice.org Calc (OOO300m9 Build 9358) on Mac
OS X 10.5.5 (9F33).
The XLS file contains an image on one spreadsheet. Calc freezes if I try to
open that file.
If I remove the image from the spreadsheet document will be open.

Trend line equations are currently uneditable, and they turn into images when
pasted into Writer. Trend line equations should be Math equations, and they
should be editable, so that you can, for example, change variable names around
and add units.

Very often I have typos in my texts, that will be recognized with spell check
launched with F7, but not with Auto Spell Check. The screenshot has been taken
from a 22 pages document, and of course, I checked that character language is
set correctly (otherwise normal spell check would not find typo).

I am using 300m9. I create a drawing rectangle and set a corner radius.
Viewing and printing is OK. I save the document as an .odg, close document, and
open. The rectangle now has square corners. This also occurs in a writer
document with an embedded drawing.

@thb Thank you for your clarification on SVG import.

Any news on SVG import for OpenOffice.org?

I tried the go-oo.org variant of OpenOffice and indeed, SVG import works fine
there. For me, this was (and still is) a clear reason to switch: OO.org 2.4 -
Go-oo.org 2.4.1 - OO.org 3.0 - Go-OO.org 3.0 (when it will be ready).

Unfortunately, the difference of opinion between Novell and Sun is a burden for
the users! The responsible persons should seriously think about it!

In charts, titles (this includes titles, subtitles, axes labels), cannot handle
character formatting in any way. While typing a title in the initial entry, you
can't make certain characters bold, or make them subscripts for instance. The
same holds true if you try to edit them afterwards, even though the edited
element looks a lot like a draw text object (which allows such things). I can
also remember that this defect has been here from at least 2.0.

I guess that this issue can be closed. The Dutch thesaurus is externally
developed. Please see http://www.opentaal.org/opentaalbank/thesaurus/

So, there is IMHO not need anymore for this issue.

I have since discovered that this is not a bug. 1. was being treated as being
numeric and the superfluous decimal point was being removed automatically. I
managed to deal with the problem by turning off number recognition in the
default table formatting.

I can't remember in which issue I saw that but if your PC is connected to your
printer by a network, OOo try to detect printer at startup. If for some reason
you use another network, it take a while before OOo stops the detection.
You can tell OOo do not detect printer at startup by using an environment
variable:
export SAL_DISABLE_SYNCHRONOUS_PRINTER_DETECTION=true

I don't know if it is the right root of the problem, but you can give it a try.

On one system of three tested, the intro splash screen is skewed (screenshot
to be attached). The native screen size is 1280x720 (16:9 aspect ratio).
This does not happen on the two other systems tested (both 4:3 aspect ratio).
It does happen even if the screen dimensions are changed (with randr) to a 4:3
aspect ratio (xquery -r reports expected values in each case). It happens
under KDE 3, KDE 4, IceWM, and TWM. If /usr/share/ooo3/program/intro.bmp is
replaced by the version from ooo2 or by a .BMP generated from the very
different looking splash screen ... for OpenOffice.org 3 at
http://marketing.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=455expandFolder=455folderID=455
the problem does not occur.

Seems to be some interaction between screen dimensions, BMP structure or
dimensions, and oosplash.bin.

mod-tessarakt: I can see Jens Müll inside the document as a shortname, but
when you actually look at the name of reviewers in Word, the real name Jens
Müller is actually there as well.

I'll therefore close this, nothing we can do about how MS Word creates the
abbreviations.

My first experience with OpenOffice writer was version 1. The spellcheck
functioned well. More recently I have downloaded versions 2.4 and 3 to find
that spellcheck does not work on new files. I have one file that was created
in version 1 and I opened in versions 2.4 and 3 and the spellcheck works.
Spellcheck appears to fail in newly created files. This defect applies to auto-
spellcheck and manually activated spellcheck.

I cannot identify a facility to attach copies of indicative files with this
report, hence their absence.

Forwarded with respect,
Yours sincerely,
Michael.

When multiple small .ods (spread sheets) are imported into text document they
are misplaced at paging.
1. In web view things appear correctly.
2. In printer view these the first two imported .ods files on a new page appear
on top of each other and print that way.
3. In printing the file from sea monkey, the first two rows of the first object
on a the page are missing.

I will be happy to provide a sample.

Vetical Callouts button is still on Toolbar.

There seems no way to get it invisible on Toolbar.

OOO300m9 Calc on Dell Latitude D830, Intel T7300, 2G, WinXP SP3

Formula entered in cell:
=IF(I5B$4;1;IF(I5B$5;2;(I5B$6;3;IF(I5B$7;4;IF(I5B$8;5;IF(I5B$9;6;IF(I5B$1
0;7;IF(I5B$11;8;IF(I5B$12;9;IF(I5B$13;10;IF(I5B$14;11;12)))

When I hit enter, formula as appears in cell:
=IF(I5B$4;1;IF(I5B$5;2;(I5B$6~3~IF(I5B$7;4;IF(I5B$8;5;IF(I5B$9;6;IF(I5B$1
0;7;IF(I5B$11;8;IF(I5B$12;9;IF(I5B$13;10;IF(I5B$14;11;12)))

Formula returns correct value for first and second if statements. Formula
returns Err:502 for any further if statements.

I suspect that B$6; or $6; is some code for a ~ someplace along the line.

email me and I will send actual file. Error occurs in ODF and XLS formats.
