[sw-issues] [Issue 113757] OOo 3.2 Writer fails to s upport PostScript-based OpenType Unicode Plane 1: SMP fonts

Whereas, this only partially true as apparently OOo 3.2 Writer supports only Unicode Plane 0: Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) (U+ to U+) (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supplementary_Ideographic_Plane#Supplementary_Ideographic_Plane). For example, the STIX Fonts Version 1.0.0 (see http://www.stixfonts.org/) PostScript-based OpenType fonts includes Unicode Plane 1: Supplementary Multilingual Plane (SMP) Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols (U+1D400 to U+1D7FF). When the STIX fonts are installed, in an OpenOffice.org Writer document, InsertSpecial CharactersFont: STIXGeneral shows no characters greater than or equal to U+1D400. I.e. there is no Subset: Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. Note that blank squares in the Special Characters array corresponding to U+1D400 to U+1D7FF can be selected. The Characters field shows blank characters and, when the Characters are inserted into the document (via the OK button), the characters entered in the document are blank space. That the STIXGeneral font includes glyphs for U+1D400 to U+1D7FF is apparent from the STIXv1.0.0\Glyphs\STIXGeneral.otf.pdf file in the STIX Full Download (see http://www.aip.org/stixfonts/font_download.jsp). NOTE: The STIX Documentation (PDF file, see http://www.stixfonts.org/STIXFontReleaseDocumentation2010.pdf) Known Issues predicts this problem: Currently there is limited support for glyphs/characters in Unicode Plane 1. This lack of support is not a font issue but rather an issue with the rendering software (e.g., browser, word processor, etc.). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 113757] OOo 3.2 Writer fails to s upport PostScript-based OpenType Unicode Plane 1: SMP fonts
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=113757 --- Additional comments from dlander...@openoffice.org Tue Aug 10 00:27:58 + 2010 --- Reading msgNo=102943, I don't have enough knowledge to comment on the overall issues re sal_Unicodes. However, reading the additional comments from sb Mon Jun 22 10:34:10 + 2009, regarding msgNo=18462, Subject: Unicode---Give us all of it!, apparently OOo was initially written to support only Unicode Plane 0: Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) (U+ to U+) and a lot of modules might need to be modified to support other Unicode planes. This is unfortunate, because apparently, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supplementary_Ideographic_Plane#Supplementary_Ideographic_Plane, apparently Plane 1, the Supplementary Multilingual Plane (SMP), is also used for currently valid symbols, including musical and mathematical, as well as historical symbols. The fact that the OOo Formula can't take advantage of the STIX Plane 1: Supplementary Multilingual Plane (SMP) Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols (U+1D400 to U+1D7FF) should be a concern, since the STIX fonts were created by consortium of publishers of mathematical, scientific, and technical books and journals to serve the scientific and engineering community in the process from manuscript creation through final publication, both in electronic and print formats. Also, OOo the STIX fonts will support OOo competitors: Additional OpenType features will be added in the second release which will allow using the font in Microsoft Office applications such as Word 2010. The third release will add LaTeX support. (See http://www.stixfonts.org/.) So, first and foremost, as I want to use the STIX fonts, of course I think that this issue is important, as I really don't want to use Microsoft Word or LaTex to write my mathematics and scientific documents. Secondly, I disagree that this issue is an enhancement, because the Special Characters dialog allows the selection of U+1D400 to U+1D7FF symbols, which it shouldn't do, so I call this a bug. Thirdly, the OOo 3.2 documentation claims support for PostScript-based OpenType fonts, which implies all of the Unicode Planes and doesn't say only Plane 0. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 72203] New components entered int o master document in wrong order

This is a problem because users naturally want to enter components in a first-to-last order. For example, the user will naturally want the Text to be at the head of the document, but when a component (say file1.odt) is entered then the file1.odt component precedes the Text component. Similarly, file2.odt is inserted before Text or file1.odt, depending upon which is selected before the insertion. Then, the user must manually drag the components into the desired first-to-last order. This is tedious for master documents with a large number components. So, I suggest that (1) a new components are entered after the selected component, (2) to allow rapid entry of new components, the last entered component is automatically selected in preparation for the entry of the next new component. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. That's quite a bit of manual work required to get the result I expected when I exported a master doc to a single file (an editable document containing all the content that was in the master doc, that can be worked on or distributed separately, without the sub docs.) To allow a user to avoid the manual work described by srhoades when converting a ODM to an ODT (especially when the ODM contains a lot of ODT sub-documents), that when exporting an ODM to an ODT a dialog box appear asking the user to choose whether the he/she wants the resulting sections to have the Link OR Protected properties. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Notice that there is no mention that the resulting ODT file from the ODM file becomes a Section that is inserted as a Link and that the section is Write Protected. At the very least, the help instructions should note explain this to prevent confusion to thousands of users like me and my employees. Similarly, apparently there is nothing in OpenOffice.org Writer Help that discusses how to edit Linked documents from within an ODT document. Note: The procedure given by es' in response to srhoades' statement that It looks like the only way to really get an edited single doc from a master document is to... didn't result in a single editable ODT document as srhoades wanted. So, still apparently the only method of getting single merged ODT file from an ODM file is to export the ODM file to an ODT file and then unchecking both the Link and Protected boxes in the Edit Sections dialog works for each Section corresponding to the ODM sub-document files. So, similarly, there is nothing in OpenOffice.org Writer Help that describes the procedure given by to get an editable single merged ODT file from an ODM file. Unless OpenOffice.org likes disgruntled users, I suggest that this issue be reopened so that OpenOffice.org Help can be improved to resolve the above issues. The documents have many source data files in the sub-directories that are associated with them via hyper links. I just tried assembling the document using a hierarchy of master documents, and found that it doesn't work. It'd be much easier to build from the bottom up using a hierarchy of masterdocuments following the file structure. Assembling the documents with one master document will be a pain. I'll try assembling sub-documents using a master document and then saving those master documents as regular ODT files. Then I'll assemble them into higher-level master documents and save them as ODF files. And so on, until I've created the whole document. This is not very manageable because it involves a lot of manual work that might result in errors. However, it would easy with hierarchical master documents. So, I've voted that hierarchical master documents be supported. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. If change bars are shown in Open Office, then both the insertions and deletions are shown. This makes the modified document section difficult to read. To fix this problem, it is suggested that an option be added to the way that deleted text is shown. This means that the copied table is not updated when the spreadsheet table is changed. However, when opened in Base, the copied table is also not editable. This means that there is no way to change the copied table. I.e., a copied table from a database whose source is a spreadsheet file cannot be changed using Base or the spreadsheet application (e.g., Calc). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
