Openoffice.org 3.2 claims to include support for PostScript-based OpenType fonts
(See http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/3.2/#general_font). Whereas,
this only partially true as apparently OOo 3.2 Writer supports only Unicode
Plane 0: Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) (U+ to U+) (See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supplementary_Ideographic_Plane#Supplementary_Ideographic_Plane).

For example, the STIX Fonts Version 1.0.0 (see http://www.stixfonts.org/)
PostScript-based OpenType fonts includes Unicode Plane 1: Supplementary
Multilingual Plane (SMP) Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols (U+1D400 to U+1D7FF).
When the STIX fonts are installed, in an OpenOffice.org Writer document,
InsertSpecial CharactersFont: STIXGeneral shows no characters greater than or
equal to U+1D400. I.e. there is no Subset: Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols.

Note that blank squares in the Special Characters array corresponding to U+1D400
to U+1D7FF can be selected. The Characters field shows blank characters and,
when the Characters are inserted into the document (via the OK button), the
characters entered in the document are blank space.

That the STIXGeneral font includes glyphs for U+1D400 to U+1D7FF is apparent
from the STIXv1.0.0\Glyphs\STIXGeneral.otf.pdf file in the STIX Full Download
(see http://www.aip.org/stixfonts/font_download.jsp).

NOTE: The STIX Documentation (PDF file, see
http://www.stixfonts.org/STIXFontReleaseDocumentation2010.pdf) Known Issues
predicts this problem: Currently there is limited support for glyphs/characters
in Unicode Plane 1. This lack of support is not a font issue but rather an issue
with the rendering software (e.g., browser, word processor, etc.).

Reading msgNo=102943, I don't have enough knowledge to comment on the overall
issues re sal_Unicodes. However, reading the additional comments from sb Mon Jun
22 10:34:10 + 2009, regarding msgNo=18462, Subject: Unicode---Give us all of
it!, apparently OOo was initially written to support only Unicode
Plane 0: Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) (U+ to U+) and a lot of modules
might need to be modified to support other Unicode planes. This is unfortunate,
because apparently, from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supplementary_Ideographic_Plane#Supplementary_Ideographic_Plane,
apparently Plane 1, the Supplementary Multilingual Plane (SMP), is also used for
currently valid symbols, including musical and mathematical, as well as
historical symbols.
The fact that the OOo Formula can't take advantage of the STIX Plane 1:
Supplementary Multilingual Plane (SMP) Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols
(U+1D400 to U+1D7FF) should be a concern, since the STIX fonts were created by
consortium of publishers of mathematical, scientific, and technical books and
journals to serve the scientific and engineering community in the process from
manuscript creation through final publication, both in electronic and print
formats. Also, OOo the STIX fonts will support OOo competitors: Additional
OpenType features will be added in the second release which will allow using the
font in Microsoft Office applications such as Word 2010. The third release will
add LaTeX support. (See http://www.stixfonts.org/.)
So, first and foremost, as I want to use the STIX fonts, of course I think that
this issue is important, as I really don't want to use Microsoft Word or LaTex
to write my mathematics and scientific documents.
Secondly, I disagree that this issue is an enhancement, because the Special
Characters dialog allows the selection of U+1D400 to U+1D7FF symbols, which it
shouldn't do, so I call this a bug.
Thirdly, the OOo 3.2 documentation claims support for PostScript-based OpenType
fonts, which implies all of the Unicode Planes and doesn't say only Plane 0.

I just tested this issue with OOo 3.1.0 Writer and it still remains unresolved.
Also, I just read Issue 24845 and indeed it and this issue are duplicates.
However, I think the suggestion given above on Tue Oct 18 17:56:16 + 2005 as
to how to resolve the problem is more precise that that given under Issue 24845
by dan_higgins Thu Aug 19 22:07:59 + 2004.
Please resolve this issue, it is still a problem for my organization as we must
submit documents to customers that are clearly readable by customers (no
strikethroughs and underlines but with change bars), which is still not possible
with OOo Writer. Our workaround is to use Microsoft Word for such documents,
which is not a satisfactory solution.

When editing a Master Document, using the Explorer Master Document view, and
entering File, Index, or new document components into the master document, the
new component is entered before the selected component. This is a problem
because users naturally want to enter components in a first-to-last order. For
example, the user will naturally want the Text to be at the head of the
document, but when a component (say file1.odt) is entered then the file1.odt
component precedes the Text component. Similarly, file2.odt is inserted before
Text or file1.odt, depending upon which is selected before the insertion. Then,
the user must manually drag the components into the desired first-to-last order.
This is tedious for master documents with a large number components. So, I
suggest that (1) a new components are entered after the selected component, (2)
to allow rapid entry of new components, the last entered component is
automatically selected in preparation for the entry of the next new component.

The issue isn't about the feature working or not working. The issue is that it
is not intuitive about how to use the feature and OpenOffice.org Writer Help
doesn't provide helpful information. So, it's all about making it easy for the
user.

(P.S.: I own a business with hundreds of employees, mostly hardware/software
engineers, scientists, etc. I've mandated OOo (instead of Microsoft Office),
which has resulted in much protesting from my employees. To back up my order, I
use OOo myself as much as possible. The only way that I can continue to mandate
OOo is for it to be bug free and readily usable. I need your help to accomplish
this.)

In addition to or alternative to my previous suggestion how to allow a user to
avoid the manual work described by srhoades when converting a ODM to an ODT, in
the Master View window when MULTIPLE LINKS are selected and a right-click quick
menu appears let the Edit link selection appear in the menu and, when Edit
link is selected, allow clearing of the Link OR Protected properties. Thus, the
Link OR Protected properties for multiple links can be modified at any time
after an ODM file is exported to an ODT file.

Regarding the comment by srhoades:

It looks like the only way to really get an edited single doc from a master
document is to export, then change every section (one at a time, no way to do it
for all sections) so that it is no longer a link to a subdoc. That's quite a bit
of manual work required to get the result I expected when I exported a master
doc to a single file (an editable document containing all the content that was
in the master doc, that can be worked on or distributed separately, without the
sub docs.)

To allow a user to avoid the manual work described by srhoades when converting a
ODM to an ODT (especially when the ODM contains a lot of ODT sub-documents),
that when exporting an ODM to an ODT a dialog box appear asking the user to
choose whether the he/she wants the resulting sections to have the Link OR
Protected properties.

OpenOffice.org Writer Help for the Insert Fields Other Variables tab has
no clear description for the Value entry:

Value
Enter the contents that you want to add to a user-defined fields.
In the Format list, define if the value is inserted as text or a number.

Given the ambiguity of the above help, I tried various entries (e.g., text,
number, 1, A, etc.) and nothing appeared to work.

I suggest that OpenOffice.org Writer Help clearly tell the user what data type
and values can be entered into the Value field.

From the OpenOffice.org Writer Help

   Using Master Documents and Subdocuments

To export a master document as a OpenOffice.org text document:
   1.Choose File - Export.
2.In the File format list, select a text document file format and click
Export.

Notice that there is no mention that the resulting ODT file from the ODM file
becomes a Section that is inserted as a Link and that the section is Write
Protected. At the very least, the help instructions should note explain this to
prevent confusion to thousands of users like me and my employees.

Similarly, apparently there is nothing in OpenOffice.org Writer Help that
discusses how to edit Linked documents from within an ODT document.

Note: The procedure given by es' in response to srhoades' statement that It
looks like the only way to really get an edited single doc from a master
document is to... didn't result in a single editable ODT document as srhoades
wanted. So, still apparently the only method of getting single merged ODT file
from an ODM file is to export the ODM file to an ODT file and then unchecking
both the Link and Protected boxes in the Edit Sections dialog works for each
Section corresponding to the ODM sub-document files.

So, similarly, there is nothing in OpenOffice.org Writer Help that describes the
procedure given by to get an editable single merged ODT file from an ODM file.

Unless OpenOffice.org likes disgruntled users, I suggest that this issue be
reopened so that OpenOffice.org Help can be improved to resolve the above
issues. This would be a positive response to feedback from users.

I've been writing a very large document with files organized in directories,
sub-directories, sub-sub-directories, etc. The files in these directories
correspond to Front(Cover, Contents, etc.), Body(Parts, Chapters, Sections,
etc.) and Back(Index, Bibliography, Appendices, etc.). The documents have many
source data files in the sub-directories that are associated with them via hyper
links.

I just tried assembling the document using a hierarchy of master documents, and
found that it doesn't work. It'd be much easier to build from the bottom up
using a hierarchy of masterdocuments following the file structure. Assembling
the documents with one master document will be a pain.

I'll try assembling sub-documents using a master document and then saving those
master documents as regular ODT files. Then I'll assemble them into higher-level
master documents and save them as ODF files. And so on, until I've created the
whole document. This is not very manageable because it involves a lot of manual
work that might result in errors. However, it would easy with hierarchical
master documents.

So, I've voted that hierarchical master documents be supported.

For clarification, the Options - Changes - Text display - Deletions Attributes
should include a [Hidden] attribute, where '[Hidden]' means 'do not display
deleted text'. Deleted text should be displayed with markings or it should be
not displayed. There is no good reason--that I can think of--for the Deletions
Attributes to include a [None] attribute.
Conversely, the Insertions Attributes should include a [None] attribute, where
'[None]' means 'display the inserted text without markings'. There is no good
reason--again, that I can think of--for the Insertions Attributes to include a
[Hidden] attribute.

I own an expanding small business currently with O(10^2) employees (engineers,
etc.). I have mandated OpenOffice.org (OOo) for the past year. However, because
of the retarded state of OOo 1.1.x for the past year I have been under constant
pressure from my staff allow them to use MS Office, which they have been used to
using before joining my business. I have been holding them off with the reason
that OOo 2.0 would be much better, which it is, but for good business reasons I
have been forced to make exceptions and authorize some purchases of MS Office.
However, certain deficiencies such as Issue #42464 will continue to give them
cause to request/demand MS Office. Please help me out by listening to our
(tony_52 and I) needs regarding this and other issues.

When recording and showing changes in Open Office, it appears to be not possible
to show only a change bar against a modified section of the document. If change
bars are shown in Open Office, then both the insertions and deletions are shown.
This makes the modified document section difficult to read. To fix this problem,
it is suggested that an option be added to the way that deleted text is shown.
An option to use hidden text should be made available.

I understand from the response to Issue #55188 that--by design--the link between
a table copied from a database whose shource is a spreadsheet is broken. This
means that the copied table is not updated when the spreadsheet table is
changed.

However, when opened in Base, the copied table is also not editable. This means
that there is no way to change the copied table. I.e., a copied table from a
database whose source is a spreadsheet file cannot be changed using Base or the
spreadsheet application (e.g., Calc).

Open a large (many rows and columns) table.
After pulling down the vertical scroll bar the first time, further downward
pulls only scrolls down three or four rows.
For a table with hundreds or thousands of entries, use of the table becomes is
impractical.
Apparently, the horizontial scroll bar behaves similarly.

For a database created from a Calc file:
Open the Base file and open the Calc file
Update a field of a record in Calc file and Save
Close Base file, but leave Calc file open
Open Base file
The field of the record in the Calc has not been updated

Note: It would be most convenient if the Base file updated automatically when
the linked Calc file is changed or at least Saved. At least, a note in Help
should explain that both the Calc and Base files must be closed to affect the
change in the Base file.
