[sw-issues] [Issue 22453] Unwanted-jump to cursor
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=22453 --- Additional comments from gnust...@openoffice.org Fri Jul 24 02:18:09 + 2009 --- I think I CCed this issue when I was using a version which had the jump triggered by the autosaving. I'm using version 3.0 (in Ubuntu 9.04) and I cannot reproduce the problem with the autosaving. What I did? I positioned the cursor in a paragraph and inserted some characters in there. Then I used the scroll wheel to scroll two pages down. Then I waited for the autosaving and it didn't trigger the jump. The only situation in which I was able to trigger an unwanted jump now is the following: - Position the cursor. - Use the scroll wheel to scroll some pages down or up so that the cursor goes out of sight. - Press one of the arrow keys, Home, or End. Bingo! Unwanted jump. 100% reproducible. Of course, if one wants the jump or not is debatable. To me this behavior is somewhat inconsistent with the behavior of the keys PageUp and PageDown. When you press these keys they (almost) always reposition the cursor to the middle of the *destination* screen so that you end up seeing the page that you think you're going to. On the other hand, the other motion keys (the arrows, Home, and End) reposition the cursor relative to its current position, which triggers an unwanted jump to the page where the cursor was. There seems to be lots of alternatives to make all motion keys behave the same: 1) Make PageUp and PageDown behave like the other keys so that they move the cursor relative to its current position and jump to there. 2) Make PageUp and PageDown simply scroll without moving the cursor. This way they would feel completely different from the other keys and could be regarded as different kinds of motion keys, more like the scroll wheel which doesn't move the cursor at all. 3) Make the other keys behave like PageUp and PageDown, i.e., if the cursor isn't visible, they should reposition the cursor to the middle of the current page and move if accordingly. 4) Make the other keys move the cursor relative to its current position but do not jump to it. I don't like (1) because it makes for more unwanted jumps. (2) is better but by itself it doesn't solve the unwanted jumps from the other keys. (3) would be ok if we had a back button to go back to where the cursor was. But this is another long standing issue (#5608). (4) doesn't work because then the only way to find out the cursor would be to insert some character without looking. I can't see a clear winner. Perhaps there are other possibilities still. If we had a back button I'd vote for (3) but without one I think the principle of least surprise would lead me to vote for (2) plus a good explanation of the behavior in the manual. As an aside (2) seems to solve yet another problem. As it is, when you PageUp or PageDown it tries to reposition the cursor to the middle of the screen. But this works only if there is a paragraph in the middle. If the middle of the destination screen happens to be in the header or the footer, or in a blank space without a paragraph there then the cursor isn't repositioned and stays where it was. This is rather unintuitive. It would be best if these keys never moved the cursor at all. I think. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Our requirements analysts weren't able to switch over to OOo and are stuck with Word because they use numbered lists heavily to describe the steps in their Use Case scenarios and need to make cross references to the steps along the document. We're planing to automate the extraction of these requirements from a document to insert them in a structured tool for analysis. Our original goal was to extract it from a ODF document, but since they will be .doc documents our script will need to first convert the documents and then extract the information. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I'm not familiar with it and I don't know if it is the best approach, but unless it's totally broken it would be the path of least resistance to those considering a migration to OOo. I would also suggest that the designers take a look at how Emacs implements the same concept: http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Mark.html. It's a little old... ok, it's god damn old, but it has served me quite well for the last 17 years. :-) For the record, Emacs doesn't mix the concepts of the mark ring (the list of previous locations) with the concept of the undo. I think it's terribly wrong to mix them up. Also, when a point in the mark ring has been deleted and you try to go back to it, Emacs simply sends you to where that point had been previously. It also only occurs with IE. Using firefox I cannot reproduce it. So far I'm unable to figure out what makes these machines susceptible. The problem is easily reproduced: - Fire up Internet Explorer - Open any page containing a link to a OOo file (.odt, .ods, whatever) - Click on the link and wait for OOo to open the document - Close the IE window and see that the OOo window closes abruptly shortly thereafter This is a problem because some applications use IE to open any HTTP link. For example, when a user reads an email in Outlook 2000 and clicks on a link to a OOo file, Outlook fires up an IE process to open the link. Then IE fires up an OOo instance to open the file. Then IE exits and causes OOo to close too in a fraction of a second, leaving no time for the user to actually read the document. So far, we're telling the users to either switch to firefox as the default browser or to copy the link URL and paste it manually in a IE windows that can be left open until after reading the document. I've seen the problem in a few machines. This is the configuration of a particular one: CPU: Pentium 4 3.00GHz RAM: 256MB OS: Windows XP Professional SP2 (Portuguese) IE: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254 OOo: 2.2.1 (Portuguese language pack) I'm going to attach a file generated by procmon (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx) which captured the syscalls and registry activities of the processes involved: iexplore.exe and soffice.bin. (There were also a soffice.exe process but procmon didn't catch any activity from it.) I started the capture when the IE and OOo windows were already open, just before I closed IE via File - Exit. When I run procmon on a machine that doesn't suffer from this problem I don't see any activity from the OOo processes. Just before submitting this issue I upgraded IE to version 7.0.5730.11 and tried again. The problem still happens with IE7. In this case, if the exact search criterion is not found, the next value will be returned. I have the following data in a spreadsheet: A 1 b 2 d The formula 'VLOOKUP(letter;$A$1:$A$2;1;1)' returns the following with letter varying from 'a' to 'e': a = #N/A b = b c = b d = d e = d It seems that VLOOKUP is returning the previous value when it can't find the search criteria in the array, not the next one as the documentation says. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I'm using OOo 2.2.0 to edit the file slow.odt which I'm going to attach. It takes 1 minute and 20 seconds to open the file. After that, it takes 5 minutes and 20 seconds to insert a newline at the end of most of the lines. (Try, for instance, after one of the bulleted items at page 12.) I'm editing it in a Dell Optiplex GX280, with a Pentium IV 3GHz (ht), and 1.5GB of RAM. I'm running Ubuntu 6.04 here, but the problem also happens in other machines running Windows. I tried to shorten the document (which has 169 pages) in order to spot the piece that could be affecting the OOo performance but it took too long to wait for the delete operation to finish and I gave up. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. (Since I was about to file the problem described there but it has already been marked as a dup I'm going to explain it here. Please, tell me to do otherwise it this isn't the best approach.) The problem is that when I have a read-only spreadsheet in Calc I'd like to be able to select the text inside a cell, copy it, and paste it in another document. I'm able to select whole cells and copy and paste them as a whole. But what I want is the ability to select just part of the text inside a cell just like I can do after double-clicking a cell in a spreadsheet open in read-write mode. This ability is particularly important when the spreadsheet cells contain lots of text so that copying it as a whole and deleting the excess is not a good solution. (I use 1.1.2, Brazilian Portuguese edition.) Define a reference over a word and insert it in two places: somewhere in the page and in a header. Save it. When I open it with OOo 1.1.2, both references are automatically updated. However, when I open it with OOo 2.0.2, the reference in the header isn't updated. I have to press F9 to force it to be updated. Even if I convert the document to the OpenDocument format the problem persists. Whenever I open it I have to press F9 to have the reference in the header updated. However, if I create the file originally with OOo 2.0.2 (instead of converting it from the SXW) the problem doesn't happen. I'm going to attach two files. The first one (re.sxw) I created with OOo 1.1.2. The second one (re.odt) I created with OOo 2.0.2. Open re.sxw with OOo 2.0.2 to see that the reference in the header isn't automatically updated. You have to press F9 to make it so. Gustavo. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=46097 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Apr 12 13:03:59 -0700 2006 --- I think the same problem occurs when you are editing a file in a file server and you lose connection to it. I tested it on a Windows machine with OOo 2.0.2 editing a file on a remote Windows server via CIFS. (I don't know if the problem would occur with a NFS access.) I openned an existing presentation and disconnected the network cable from my desktop. Then, as I went further down the slides at some time (I think it was at the first slide containing an image) OOo warned that it couldn't read the file. Then I tried to save the presentation in my local hard drive and OOo complained that it couldn't. But a small file was created anyway. The file is small and corrupted. I'm going to attach it here. This problem is particularly bad because the people that complained about it to me told me that when they have network problems in the middle of a big editing session they lose all their work since they can't save the file even locally. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=64295 Issue #:|64295 Summary:|Cannot open file from Internet Explorer Component:|framework Version:|OOo 2.0.2 Platform:|PC URL:| OS/Version:|Windows, all Status:|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard:| Keywords:| Resolution:| Issue type:|DEFECT Priority:|P3 Subcomponent:|www Assigned to:|mba Reported by:|gnustavo --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Apr 11 12:28:23 -0700 2006 --- I exercised this problem on the following platform: - Dell Latitude laptop with a Pentium III - Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2 - Internet Explorer version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 - OpenOffice.org 2.0.2 - OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 However, I could reproduce it in several PCs so that I think the versions above aren't that important. Open a HTML page containing a link to a OOo file and click on the link. When you do it for the first time IE downloads the file into its temporary folder (C:/Documents%20andSettings/user/Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/, in my machine) and invokes OOo to open it. It works ok for the first time. Now, close the file in OOo and click on the link again. This time I get an error message from OOo telling me that it doesn't have permission to open that file which is in the IE temporary folder. Both versions of OOo (1.1.2 and 2.0.2) give me error messages, but they are different. I'm going to upload two images showing the error messages. The messages are in Portuguese. They say something like this: - ooo1-msg: Error loading document The access to ... was denied. - ooo2-msg: The object is not accessible. The object cannot be accessed due to insufficient user rights. Another difference is that with OOo 1.1.2, when the user clicks onthe OK button the file is openned, which is anoying but works. With OOo 2.0.2 on the other hand, when the user clicks OK the process is terminated. This problem became more critical since we upgraded from one version to the other companywide. I couldn't find any previously reported issue about this. However, I found several threads on OOoForum.org about this, all of which seem to be unresolve: http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=33405 http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=28025 http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=5082 http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=19766 http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=16606 Gustavo. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. (I'm not sure you need to save it once first, but this is what I did.) - Go Insert - Hyperlink. - Use the folder button to navigate to a file contained in the samme file server so that the file path is something like \\server\share\path\to\file. It doesn't need to be on the same directory or even in the same share, just in the same server. - Insert some text - Click Apply - Click Close - Save the file again. Hover the mouse button over the link you inserted to see that the URL it presents is like file:///server/share/path/to/file. Click on it to make sure you can open the linked to file. Now, copy the file you just created to your local harddrive and open it. Hover the mouse over the link and note that the URL is different than it was. It is now like this: file:///share/path/to/file. Note that it is missing the first component, which identifies the file server. Repeat the whole procedure, starting by creating a new text document, but instead of saving it on the file server, save it directly on your local hard drive. Hover the mouse over the link to see that it is correct. I openned up the two files, the one created on the server and the one created on the local drive, and compared the content.xml of them both. The difference is that in the file created locally I see: text:a xlink:type=simple xlink:href=//server/share/path/to/file.odt text:span text:style-name=T13Windows/text:span /text:a And in the file created on the server I see: text:a xlink:type=simple xlink:href=/share/path/to/file.odt text:span text:style-name=T13Windows/text:span /text:a It seems that when OOo saves the link path it strips the server component and inserts a relative path if the file containing the link resides in the same server. Click on Numbering On/Off to enable numbering and type three lines indenting the second and third ones to get something like this: 1 first level . second level . third level Now, go to Tools - Outline Numbering In the Numbering tab select levels 1-10, change Number to 1, 2, 3, ..., and click Ok. The second and third lines in the document should have lost their indentation ending looking like this: 1 first level 2 second level 3 third level This bug is particularly harmful because one cannot undo the indentation loosing effect by pressing Ctrl-Z. I've seen people been hit hard when working in a large document, full of enumerations and itemizations, all of which lost their indentations simultaneously with no way to revert it. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Very similar to way you do it in OOo. However, in Word there is an option to insert the object as an icon that isn't available in OOo. (Sorry, I don't have a Word here with the English interface to check the exact name of the option. But it is very obvious, on the right of the window.) When you insert an object (say, an embedded text document or a spreadsheet) as an icon, its contents don't appear embedded in a frame in the usual way. You get an icon representing the document. When you double-click on the icon, the embedded document is openned in another window for editing. These feature is very much used by some of our users here and I'd like to see it supported in OOo. BTW, when you import a Word document containing such icons OOo tries to preserve the Word functionality as I gather from issue #60487. If it can import correctly such things I think it should support their creation as well. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sc-issues] [Issue 46993] Calc is too slow to save an imported CSV file as a SXC file
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=46993 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Apr 25 08:54:18 -0700 2005 --- I understand that XML is a rather verbose format, but even in binary you have to implement some kind of serialization of the data-structures you use to describe the document in memory. However, the problem I'm having is not just a mather of Calc being a fixed factor (say 2 or 4) slower than Excel to do the same thing. The factor is not fixed as you can gather from the table of values I posted initially. It doesn't seem to be a problem with a specific version or platform since I tried it on different machines, OSs and OOo versions. But your results don't measure up with mine. Your tests with a 10K lines file got aproximately the same time to open it and to save it. But my results were very differente. On OOo 1.1.2 it took 14 times more time to save the 10K lines file than to open it, and on OOo 1.9.90 it took 7 times more time. (I just did the test again and got the same results as before.) I'm wondering if you performed the same test. Note that I open the CSV file and save it as a SXC. The saving is what is taking so much time. I just did it again (with OOo 1.9.90) but this time I saved the file as a CSV with another name and it took half the time it has taken to open. So, please confirm again that you tested exactly the same thing as I did, saving the spreadsheet as a SXC and not as a CSV. And thanks for your patience. :-) - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The original CSV file contains 50K CRLF separated lines. Each line contains 63 TAB separated columns. In the Text Import window I just deselect comma and select tabulation before importing it. I've tried this exercise in a Pentium IV, 1.5GHz box, with 512MB of RAM and running Debian Sarge Linux. I've used OOo 1.1.2 (ptBR) and 1.9.90 (enUS). I've truncated the CSV file in order to test it with 1000, 5000, 1, and 32000 lines. The exercise was to open the CSV file and then to save it as a SXC file. The timings went like this: LINES 1.1.2(open) 1.1.2(save) 1.9.90(open)1.9.90(save) 10003s 13s 3s11s 50007s1m20s 8s50s 1 16s3m31s16s 1m43s 32000 49s10m (not tested) (not tested) The biggest problem is the time it takes to save the file as a SXC. Also note that the total time increases more then linearly with the number of lines in the file. With 32000 lines the OOo 1.1.2 simply took too much time for me to wait for it. Things are a little better with OOo 2.0 but not significantly so. The same file can be worked with very easily in Excel 2000 I was told (but couldn't confirm myself since I don't have a Windows box handy). I wondered if this could be due to the many numeric conversions with large numbers in the spreadsheet and tried once selecting text for the columns format. The opening time was cut in half but the saving time was cut in just 25% for the 1 lines file. Also of interest is that after saving the spreadsheet as a SXC file it takes approximately the same time to open as it took to be saved, so that it is much worse to work with the SXC format than with the CSV format. I'm going to attach a CSV file with 1000 lines which I used to test. You can create larger files simply by catenating it several times. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
