Dear Frank,

Many thanks. You are quite right:
1) The observed behaviour is not what would be expected with that box ticked, as
it does not print the selected page when specified.
2) I can get satisfactory printing results by unticking that box. However, I
understand that, since 2.0, that box is ticked by default, so, some users would
be experiencing frustration.

James

When I print from an XLS file that was made in Excel, nine files out of ten only
the first, or only the second, page prints. In these cases, if I ask for a later
page (such as the third page), then it reports print completed, but nothing
comes out of the printer. Same whether I ask for all pages, or selective pages.

Colleagues find the same on other PCs also with Windows XP. We are working
around by exporting to PDF and printing the PDF, but it is not very popular with
my colleagues.

Other times, it prints a different page from the one requested, generally about
two pages lower number than the one requested.

Issue present since first installing 2.4.1. Many thanks

[sc-issues] [Issue 83045] calc printing sheets

I have very similar problem in Calc, in both 2.4.0 and 2.4.1:
1) If spreadsheet was originally created in Excel and imported, then almost
universally, OOo Calc does not print it right. OOo Calc will print only the
first page. If I try to print any other than the first page, it says it has
finished but nothing comes out. If I print some including the first page, only
the first comes out. Print Preview seems to work fine, however.
2) Most of the time with the above I can work around by exporting PDF and then
printing the PDF. However, with bigger spreadsheets I sometimes get similar
behaviour - exporting to PDF I sometimes only get some of the pages, not the
ones that I wanted.
Been living with this problem since 2.4.0 but it's still there in 2.4.1 so I
thought I should raise it.

Using highlight values mostly clears up this problem. (OK it took me some
weeks of using OOo before I noticed the highlight values feature, but that's a
different dimension of problem.) I'd be inclined now to downgrade my issue to a
non-issue.

Attached the file.

File was created in Quattro Pro 8.0.0.379 (Japanese language edition). We have
wanted to migrate from Quattro Pro to OOo for years but this issue has always
held us back.

Attached file opens and displays in Excel. However, in Open Office Calc 2.2.1,
it opens but the Japanese lettering cannot be seen (garbled). Looks rather like
when you are trying to use a western font to display Japanese, but we tried
changing the font and no benefit.

If we open the file in Excel and save again, then it opens in Open Office
without problems.

We have lots of files like this, and would like to be able too open them in OOo.

kpalagin,
Very good point that I hadn't thought of. I still like being able to put
annotation into the area (compared to using comments) but I see what you mean.
Generating an error only when there is text which looks like it could be a
number is too luxurious.

Very specific issue:
1) Excel cannot do arithmetic on a range or a cell which contains text - it
gives an error.
2) In Calc, if text is included in a range, then you do arithmetic on the range
(sum, to take a simple example), it treats the text field as value zero, and
does the calculation without complaints. I find this really useful for
annotating my work.
3) Before sending my files to an Excel user, I have to debug all those instances
out.
4) WHY IS THAT A PROBLEM? The problem is the need to run an instance of
genyew-wine Excel itself to chase down and eliminate all these instances. So we
can't run an MS-free shop. Of course you can't provide configurable
switch-on-or-off-as-needed dumb-down compatibility with all the problems of
Excel, but as this one is fairly specific and very widely applicable, could it
be done?

Possible Implementation: Under Configuration, have an option to view it as an
Excel user would see it. Build in this function into that, and any others that
seem high enough priority.

Thanks! I'm busily evangelising

From the author of the PPT document:
Sorry to hear the charts are disappearing. We use Office XP Professional and
PowerPoint 2003. However the problem might be that the charts are EMFs.
and
The graphs were created in a separate graphing programme which sits on top of
the database. This allows for highly accurate, flexible and automatic charting
but does import well as EMFs, with bitmaps being a little distorted.

Not quite sure what you need. I'm told that if opened in Microsoft's Powerpoint
the document has no problems, and as the document was originated in Powerpoint
the author is going to argue that this document is not broken, and he won't
give me a new one.

I did confirm that the graphic itself is fine actually - select the graphic in
OOo and right click and choose Save graphic and save it as a WMF, then open
Windows Explorer and choose to view it in Windows Fax and Image Viewer (i.e.
double-click on it in Explorer) then you can see it in all its glory. (If you
save it as EMF, that doesn't work, however). I only tried that with one of the
images so far.

Does that help any? Sorry

Opened a PPT file that was created with Microsoft Powerpoint, and the charts on
several pages do not display at all (it's very obvious which ones). One of the
charts displays incorrectly (it's fairly obvious).

Asked the originator of the file, and he said Ah, that'll be the EMFs. We do
find some versions of Windows have trouble with EMFs created with the latest
Windows. It's a pain, all I can think of is to send you a PDF

I don't know if it's really EMFs but I'm attaching the PPT file.

I see similar issues raised in Writer and Draw since Oct 2006. My issue is not a
copy/paste issue but opening a foreign file.

Further testing:
I selected one of the missing charts (the one on p.20) in Impress and used
Right-Click, Save Image, and Saved as WMF, and could see it in Windows
Fax/Image Viewer. Saved as EMF and could not see anything.

Then I opened a new OOo Draw document and did Alt - Insert - Graphic - From File
and inserted the WMF. A plain rectangle was all I could see. Same result if I
inserted the EMF.

History:
First noticed this issue in OOo 2.0 in Oct 2006. Didn't have the problem file
before that so don't know if it is same in earlier versions. Same behaviour in
OOo 2.1.

Sorry I can't give more technical information about the problem. I should have
edited the file down to just one offending page, but I don't own a copy of the
MS application.
