Changing fonts is a tiresome, the UI which is used in this dialog is pretty
obscure, and not OOo at all -- provide quick and easy access to selecting
fonts, not ambiguous "modify" button with combobox, with another dialog (even
describing such nested structure here is complex).

1) I confirm it is related to scaling (however in my case with 100% I still
get incorrect height, about for 80% it gets OK)

2) I also see incorrect results caused by change of the scaling itself

3) the other report -- I may be related, but for sure it is not a duplicate,
as I stated, here let's talk about just viewing data without editing

About dup -- thank you for the link, here let's focus on the height of the
formula editbox, and let's leave the other one for dropping down the text.

Formula editbox --> see the screenshot.

Opensuse 11.1, 64 bit, KDE 3.5.10, OOo from OS repo, English.

How to reproduce -- simply load _any_ spreadsheet and look at the formula edit
box.

Settings -- yes, but it is not my fault, but OOo, i.e. OOo should detect font
size and adjust the height of the widgets accordingly to font size.

Formula edit box is too small -- when it is in view mode the lower part of
text is cut a bit, but in edit mode (when there is a caret) text is lowered
further to such extent, that letters
v y

looks exactly the same.

I am not talking about charity -- I am talking about buying this feature.

Why this way? Because _I_ am tired of not taking responsibility, of abandoning
created software, of ignoring those who paid, of not listening (8 years!).
Charity is OK if you want support homeless, poor, etc. But making software is
a profession, so if my money will go for a software, then only for a
professional programmer, who takes his/her job seriously.

> We have never had a problem "donating" to open source projects

I can only speak for myself, but I had and I have one and fundamental. I have
no problem for paying for good quality product, with solid prospects of
reliable development (because I need a tool for a job, not toy for my
amusement). "Closed" or "open" (source) does not imply the above (it is
orthogonal to the quality).

> So I figure the following:

3. Elegance by obscurity -- RC would reveal to anyone, not even a developer,
how OOW manages the attributes. It would be interesting to see the internals
of some crazy effects I see when using OOW.
Take this hypothesis with a smile ;-)

> So what do we who need Reveal Codes do?

4. Collect the money and "hire" a programmer for that. I would pay for this
but I would have a guarantee it would not end with taking money and no
product, or even with code (good quality) but rejected by OOO team (Not
Invented Here Syndrome).

I have to buy MS Office anyway (yes, I know, no RC, but OO is not very good in
importing .doc files as you probably know), so few bucks more won't kill me (I
think). However I have no idea how to setup such hiring.

Currently OOW has a loop, it formats data according to format, but if it
it finds "better" match, it formats the format according to data (and then
data according to that new format). This is plain wrong.

OOW can have initial "auto detection of data" turned on, but later when user
selects any "fixed" format this format should be kept no matter what data are
entered in the cells.

Cell type format is for indicating OOO to accept the format I am entering. So
when I say "cell format is a text" accept a text. It is that simple -- do not
check later what I enter, and do not change the cell format "behind the
scenes". Forcing any other action, like adding quotes just to accept text
as-is is exactly what this bug is about.

> define your own date format,

I don't want a date format, I want to make all cells text format, so I could
input text as I would like without auto-changing it by OOO.

IOW: when I say "text format" I want to see "text format" no matter what. When
I say "scientific format" I want to have "scientific format" (no matter what).
Data should be formatted __according__ to cell format, not otherwise.

IOW2: currently OOW has a loop, it formats data according to format, but if it
it finds "better" match, it formats the format according to data (and then
data according to that new format). This is plain wrong.

There are usually some voices against RC feature stating that user should use
styles, and modify them, and not tweak this or that attribute. Great, but in
real world I don't create documents all the time, very often I download
document from the web site (.doc "of course") and I only have to fill the
blanks.

There is also another reason to have RC -- to see why OOO display document the
way it displays, e.g. this huge gap below line in the document I edit right
now, is because of:
a) the style of the paragraph
b) attribute of this paragraph
c) table cell settings
d) or it is just a bug in OOO, because yesterday there was no gap?

Without RC I cannot be sure, so I have to check all the possible settings to
get the clue -- it is waste of time.

I don't call it autocorrection, because it does not corrects anything, and it
is not autoformatting, because it not only about formatting.

Enhancement: one switch to disable all autoreplacement features.
[ ] autoreplacements -> no changes in text user typed
[x] autoreplacements -> changes according to specific rules, like cell
type, "autocorrections", etc.

The reasons:
a) there are many places to control auto-changes, so to turn it off, it takes
a while
b) user is never sure if there is one auto-change feature left turned on
c) OOO quality of autocorrection is pretty bad, and it makes more harm than
good to have it on

I would stress one thing -- this settings (to make sense) has to be global.
Once turned off, no "correction" in text is made by computer. None. If user
types 32nd January, keep it. If user types "cmoputer", keep it. And so on.

Example:
You have format for date DD/MM/YY
and you would like to put text 2010-02-13 into a cell. It looks like date, and
let's say for simplicity it is a date.
Ok, you put in the cell, and OOO changes it to 13/02/10. But you didn't want
that, so you change the cell formating from date to general, user, whatever,
just not date.
You put again this text, but OOO is not convinced, and changes format of the
cell again to the date.

Please: if user say it is a text cell, accept it. Don't change user input
because you know better.

Weekend users work with programs and documents. Not with .odt files, or .pdf
files.

Thus it would be convenient when opening file to check if the file is natively
supported (.doc, .txt, .html and so on) or not (.pdf, .rpm, .zip). If the
latter case show a dialog with two choices -- either use default app for the
file (kpdf, ark, ark: respectively) as a default choice or open it using
ooffice indeed.

Currently there is default filter when opening a document "all files" which is
not useful and confuses users (for example what is the point of opening file
*,bz2 ? as a document).

So please change it to "all supported files" -- .html, .odt, .txt , .doc, and

Is this macro a reveal codes feature? No -- then please open another report.

( And just before you do, do the math -- somebody has to sit down and design
such feature, somebody has to write it down, somebody has to spend time on
this. Thanks to that macro and time spent, do we get reveal codes sooner or
later? So thanks for not reporting anything ).

a) I am 100% fine

b) if there is still this bug valid (as Of pointed out) I think the better
would be to fix it rather than skipping over it (the reporter by definition can
be only one person, but all users are affected) -- just my though

10.1 is quite old, I use 11.1 and there is not even such directory
as /opt/openoffice for openoffice. Simplest solution would be to upgrade the
system.

[sw-issues] [Issue 102565] Paste in table: copied ro w should be inserted instead of replacing curr ent row

I don't see how fixing a bug is enhacement. It is a bug because it is
inconsistent and and it ignores mode (insert).

Inserted row should be placed after for the same reason -- consistency. When
you paste two rows at the end of the table, first row is replaced the second
row is inserted.

Anyway, if user does not pay attention and rely on OOWriter status this leads
to data loss (data that has been replaced).

I know tables and text are not the same, but here behaviour can be the same and
should be the same.

How to reproduce it, step by step:
1. create two tables, A and B, 2x2 each
2. fill each cell with some text
3. select first row in table B and copy it
4. position the caret in the last row of A, left column
5. paste
6. A is still 2x2, the last row is _replaced_ (bug)

ad.6) the pasted row should be inserted because the mode is "insert" and the
target row is not selected

To realize the nature of the bug do the following:
1) type world
2) select and cut "world"
3) type "hello "
4) press ctrl+v
5) you will get "hello world"
6) select "hello world"
7) paste again -> the selected text is replaced with "world"

But this does not work tables. When you copy a row, and then you paste it, no
matter if the "target" row is selected or not, it is always replaced.

Behaviour should be consistent, bug.

Reason: user could change the values, apply, observe the effect, and change
them again. Currently she/he has to close the dialog (because of the [ok]
behaviour), and go back to it. It is tiresome.

Good candidates for [apply] (OOWriter):
format -> character
format -> paragraph
format -> bullets
format -> page
table -> properties
table -> autofit -> row height

and many others.

You can set it as autofit (i.e. it fits to its content) or set it manually.

The bug is, then when you turn on autofit you can still set the height -- users
are surprised that entered values do not work.

When checkbox in on, disable the editbox, when checkbox is off, enable the
editbox.

menu -> table -> autofit

In this submenu you find tools to set sizes of rows and columns. One of the
option available is indeed autofitting, but _one_ of _many_. This label should
says "sizes", "sizing", anyway, something informative and appropriate for
content of the submenu.

I noticed that when you already know where to look for, you can change the
height/width of cells, but if you are looking for the menu item where it can be
done -- well, user has no chance.

[sw-issues] [Issue 94970] when menu is opened shorcu ts are interpreted as accelerators

I explain this by example, it is the easiest one.

Let's say you have:
menu _Bookmarks (accelerator b)
menu item _Settings (accelerator s)
and defined keyboard shortcut ctrl+s for saving doc.

For any KDE app, pressing this sequence:
alt+b
ctrl+s

does nothing. Because after alt+b bookmark menu is opened, and then any
keyboard shortcut is killed. You have to press accelerator key.

In case of openoffice the effect is different
alt+b
ctrl+s

is treated as I would press
alt+b
s

(and save is performed).

But I _did not_ pressed accelerator key. So in entire environment only
openoffice misbehaves, and interprets keyboard shortcut as accelerators keys.

Ctrl+s != s

Reopening, because what you said is not true -- normally entire keyboard
shortcut is disabled. To get accelerator working you have to press accelerator
(normally).

What OOo does is completely unsafe, because it ignores modifiers, not entire
shortcut.

I doubt in first -- otherwise please tell us how your proposition help edit all
formulas at once?

With reveal codes it is straightforward, but somehow I don't see what
formatting has to do with fractions, sigmas, sums, etc.

> I would guess
> that there will only be few WP5.1 die-hards left that would still

I am not WP user and reveal codes is not "because we are used to it". Reveal
codes is simply useful no matter where do you come from -- why? Read the
comments above.

Testcase: document with 100 formulas inserted. Replace all Sigma symbols with
Theta symbol. Time limit: 5 seconds.

permanent underline

Quite puzzling, anyway OOo violates user's command, reproduce:
1. open the document
2. select the text "XXX"
3. go to format -> character
4. choose underline -> none
5. OK (accept)

OOo will ignore this command and will keep the underline.

better to leave such polishing when the feature will be implemented (if it will

find in selected text is always disabled

Of course disabling makes sense if there is no selection, but there is
selection.

Note: it is not about turn on/off by default, but the fact this option is
non-existant in practice.

@Wg, additional information. When you are writing the text in impress.

So this works -> empty page in impress -> paste -> you get the table.

But this does not
page with text, you are typing hello world (impress) -> paste -> you got the
text from the table.

> Those apps are specialized: one is a word processor, the other one is a

I know.

> There is no reason to have transitions in a word processor
> or word processor typical features in a presentation program.

There is. Impress and Writer are suppossed to be the same same suite, yet they
are so different.

Have a look at the tables -- do they look the same for you in presentation and
in writer document? Absolutely no, and they should!

So my wish is this -- one app: impresswriter, you need presentation, ok, you
run it in presentation mode, you need text, you run it in text-doc mode. This
way, no matter what you do you have full set of features, and unified user
interface.

Consistent UI matters. And now it is a mess. The same feature in Writer looks
like this, in impress it looks like that.

Please reconsider and reopen this report.

table has fancy background color with blank (no) template

IMHO the table theme should match the template the user picked up. But with no
template the background color should be none -- i.e. white. Yet, when I insert
table into presentation (based on no template) I get fancy shadows of blue.

It would be ok, if my template was "blue colors" or something, but blank means
blank. Please respect the user choice.

> How do you insert the table?

Via button in the toolbar.

> How do you select the cells?

Shift+down, down, down...

> Do you have access to another PC to test it there?

Yes, I can do it.

> Do you use an OOo version from your Linux distributor?

Yes.

Btw. when I select several (!) cells and then I change the font size, let's
say to 40 (from 20), I see 40, but the font is still 20, I deselect rows and
then I see in editbox value 20.

[design] make impresswriter app instead of two

Currently the problem is despite all the similarites those apps (writer,
impress) have so much different UI. Without any benefit.

What's more -- there are two apps. And let's list the differences (I mean,
serious):
* in impress you can have transitions between objects (an element can appear
in the page after clicking, or next slide can appear)
* in writer there is how many page this content will take notion, in impress
you have how tiny font is required to get this content on N pages

And... that's it, right?

So please add to writer:
* slide presentation mode
* transition attributes for objects
* auto-fit mode, so text would not leak to another page, but it will be
shrinked instead

The rest is importing templates. This way the user could work with tables,
graphics, video, etc. without any worrying if this should be presentation or
publication.

What's more the change (publication->presentation) would be much easier
because of the same exactly UI.

I think those apps are so close in features that it is a pity they are so far
away in UIs and how this features are delivered (compare inserting tables, the
same object, fundamentally different behaviour -- no benefits, rather a lot of
harm).

colors list of the table cells: sort them

You can change color for the table but the problem is Impress offers a user a
list of colors. And it really hard if you see a list shown in random order

gray
white
yellow
gray 50%
...

It is a mess, please, sort colors by names, so user does not have to go one by
one to find the needed one.

Insert table, type some text into it. Select one cell, change font size. Watch

change.

Now select severals cells, and also change the font. Edit box --> size

I run writer with some document, I close document, writer still runs.

However when I do this:
run writer, open document, run impress, open document, close the impress
document -> then, impress quits

Please don't do this, I know this is the same suite but I just closed the doc,
I didn't quit the app.

This is a bug -- closing a document is not the same as quitting the
application.

I have table and writer and I would like to copy it to Impress presentation. I
select whole table, copy it, switch to impress, paste -- but instead of table,
I get the text of the cells.

So it works rather like -> select, convert to text, copy, paste.

No, no, misunderstanding -- I don't wish easier selecting cell, but easier
copying formula.

In other words -- let's assume selecting is Ok, and it is unchanged. Now -- I
wish that formula is copied now as now is copied text. If user would like to
paste text instead of formula --> paste special.

If cell can contain only one formula or one text (and not mixed) then even
empty-copy (copying without selecting) could be implemented as copying
formula.

Reopening this one, to separate those two issues (easier copying vs. easier
selecting), however I will track the other report too, thank you.

Es, thanks a lot. Since there is no point in opening almost duplicate, I am
changing status, summary, and the content a bit.

The wish: in such case, please ease down formula copying, so "standard" copy
would work. I.e. user does not have to selecting two cells, getting back, etc.

Steps:
1. create table
2. in one of the cells enter formula
3. click OK, so formula is executed
4. select the cell
5. copy
6. paste it somewhere else

observe that the text (result) is pasted, not the formula.

It is really awkward to type
D4
in Calc to get D4 cell content and to type

to do exactly the same thing in writer. Those apps are components of the same
suite after all.

You mean, in general, as mechanism? Sure.

It depends what steps are taken and what mode is set to klipper. If the
correct entry is an active one, that pasting work -- in OOO and in other apps.

So for example:
* the steps as above shown with klipper mode -- separate clipboard, pasting
works
* the steps as above with klipper separate mode, pasting via MMB does not work
(? instead of polish characters)

> - What happens with a copy-paste from the text editor to OOo?

No problem, entries in klipper are good, pasting works.

Guys, please don't close it as worksforme because it is irrelevant -- there
are thousands of possible screen resolutions, DPIs, font sizes, and so on
(mechtilde you didn't even give any parameters of your screen).

The fact it works for you, it does not mean this dialog is properly
constructed and it will scale up/down in every environment. And it works for
me too! At one computer with low resolution.

On another -- it does not.

OOO 3.0 already proved that all dialogs are incorrectly build up, because the
layout does not scale properly (yes, literally, every dialog is messed up --
reported).

So please, close it, but only if it is fixed (by design, not by accidentaly
spotted that it works on 2 or 3 computers). Thank you in advance.

The same wish applies to "for paragraph" but of course for paragraph scope.

Precence: selection (local) -> paragraph (between local and global) -> "all
text", i.e. document (global)

@Mru, yes! :-)

Tools -> Language -> For selection

There _is_ check mark. And each time you change it, check mark changes.
In "For all text" your selection is ignored -- there is _no_ check mark. So in
this sense it does not work -- check mark does not appear.

> If you want a check mark (as it is shown for "selection", please file an
> other Enhancement request for this.

Exactly. I will reopen this one to save the report space -- no need to have
bunch of identical reports. As ehnacement as you suggested (but honestly I
think it is defect).

> But please not a simple "need check mark", but
> detailed considerations (what's with OLE objects? Mark shown always if all
> document is in same language? Disappear if 1 character is in other
> language? ...

It is pretty straightforward really. The checkmark is shown according to user
choice. This value (language) applies to any element in the document _unless_
user changes some elements directly. And if she/he did -- the language "for
all document" does not change -- it is value which is "default" for document.

Example:
type hello świat
set "for all text" -> english -> check mark is shown
select "świat" and choose "polish" for selected text
still, "for all text" is english, because it is the main/default language for
the document as a whole

If you start typing "inside" "hello"
"hello" AAA will be english
but if you start typing inside "świat"
"świBat" BBB will be polish, because local settings have precedence over
global

1. Done.

2. Spanish text is marked as italian. Except this -- test passed.

3. Done.

4. Done (but what for?)

5. Done.

> expected: all text now in Italian language

How can you tell? By checking Format -> Character? Ok, but this is quite
different menu.

Look at _the same_ menu again -- Tools -> Language -> For all text. No check
mark there. And it should be. It is really absurd UI if you switch some menu
item, and result are not shown at this menu item, but in quite another one.

If I would like to ensure what is the global language set for the document, I
won't check character after character in whole document.

Thank you for this workaround.

However in comment you are wrong.

> 1.'replace all' will not work, that button is for
> replacing all formatting.

No. It is for replacing all occurrences at the same time. Remove attribute at
all and replace b with nothing. Replace all -> replaced as expected.

> In your tests you did not select any replacement formatting,
> and so correct reaction for 'replace all' was no replacement.

Nope. Because "replace all" replaces all (as the name tells).

Replace -- replaces just found matched string. One replacement.
Replace all -- replaces all found matched string. Max. replacaments (after
this in the document that will be no matching string).

And in a way OOO3 knows this. It shows the dialog "search key replaced X
times" but in document there were no replacements made.

"Replace all" does not work as "find all" and in this case it does -- this is
a bug.

Well, thank you for suggestion but I cannot get rid of old settings -- to much
customization, too much styles, etc. I use linux version and I get rid of old
binaries before installing new ones, but I copied the settings and
bibliography db afterwards.

About spellchecker -- I corrected the summary. The problem now is that OOO
works at the same time in all languages, not only one -- selected.

There sub-issues, but I open separate reports for them.

When you are about to enter new bug/wish report you have to pick up the
version of OOO. Currently there is completely a mess -- old versions, new
versions, developer versions, everything mixed up.

Please get rid of old, obsolete versions (1.x, 2.x), as well with introducing
final product of all rc, betas, alphas.

Also show normal version convention -- like numbering.
ooo x.x
ooo-dev x.x
dev x.x
x.x

does not help because it is hard to find out the latest product. Where should
you expect final version? At the end or at the beginning, right? But currently
OOO3.0 is placed somewhere in the middle, after 1.x series, but before 3.0
milestones. So please sort entries by time of release.

Steps:
type
hello world

this is perfect English so spellchecker won't find any errors. Run
spellchecker anyway. The spellchecker dialog will appear, and additional
dialog informing there was no error. OK.

But look at the spellchecker dialog (which is placed in the background now).
There is dictionary combobox with language label -- it is empty. Please show
it as usual, it is minor defect but anyway, a defect.

Ok, to maybe save some longer discussion I ask you this -- how can you do
find&replace on

(a non bold, b bold)
to replace everything in bold for nothing? result should be

I tried it again using OOO3 and as before the only effect is OOO3 states there
was 1 replace but in fact OOO3 didn't replace anything. It just selected b's,
but didn't replaced them.

> - My 3.0 does not know "Attribute 'not bold'", only "Format 'no
> bold'". We are talking about the "Format ..."?

True, no bold.

> - You really found "" with search for "Format 'no bold'"? That
> would be a heavy bug, because "" is BOLD in your example.

My mistake here -- the discussion over this bug continues, so I mistype
sometime.

> - Your example seems to say that you select "attribute: not bold"
> for "Replace". Did you really use it there or for the "find"
> options?

For find. Misleading order of data, sorry for that.

Here corrected steps:

type
a
(b with bold)

call find&replace

enter for find
  text:
  attribute: no bold
for replace
  text:

click [replace all]

bbb will be selected, nothing will be replaced.

I am terribly sorry for misleading information -- I only insert formulas to
the writer, I didn't even once open standalone math module :-) So I assumed it
was "obvious", my mistake, sorry.

It is NOT disabled. If it was, I wouldn't start this report.

It is enabled, alive, and ready to be clicked. User clicks, nothing happens.

I opt for rather removing it, not disabling it, since disable suggest, the
feature is there, it is just a matter of activating it in some way. But
disable would be also useful (more useful than having it enabled).

There is a dead menu item in the menu. Remove this menu item, please.

I am not wishing for recording capability (thank you for the longer
explanation) but for REMOVING the dead menu entry.

I am repeating and repeating the issue of removing dead menu entry, and you
are answering about recording, API, etc. It does not matter what the label of
the menu item says, the only important thing is it does not work at all. It is
_dead_. So please remove it.

I am changing the summary to this, because otherwise I guess we will get back
to the record/API/macro explanation again. It is irrelevant now -- since the
feature won't be implemented (as you said), there is no point in having such
menu item.

"Original" OOo does not change a thing, I use OOo from suse now because there
are less packages used. Besides -- the bug was in m3, in m4, and then it was
fixed in Final version, but bad guys in suse put it back? ;-)

The initial dialog is not the only place which has problems with the layout --
the other is option dialog (reported). I suspect OOo does not do dynamic
layout, but assumes some screen resolution, font size, or dpi. Some parameter
looks like fixed value for me.

My resolution is 1400x1050. I can give you font sizes too, but please let me
know which category is used in initial dialog.

Reopening. I installed new 3.0 with l10n-en and l10n-pl as the result I get
the same as before, i.e.
a) I have hunspell dictionary (where did it come from???)
b) the spelling check says always the check is complete, no errors found

Of course I cannot do anything -- check the english or polish text.

For example go to node:
Language settings
  Languages

"same as local settings" or for example "enabled for complex text layout" has
visible upper part of the label, the lower is not visible.

I didn't check all the labels literally, but wherever I click I see that the
lower part is cut off. It seems that auto-layout assumed there is no graphics
below such letter as
wertuioasdfhklzxcvbnm
but there are!

The bottom line is -- if you know Z is malfunctioning either fix it or remove
Z. The menu item says "record macro" so I expect it will record macro (pretty
common-sense expectation).

My original report has fixing in mind, but since it was closed as wontfix, now
I opt for removing this item from the menu.

Now there is dead menu item -- this is plain wrong.

Ok, then such information should be displayed for user in record dialog --
something like "no recording".

UI should inform about such shortcomings, not (only) bugzilla.

Reopening, changing status to wish-report.

I am "unhappy" because it is a defect, but not the way you probably thought.

If there is button "print" I expect I get printout. There is no sane way to
argue, "oh well, the print does not work by design".

If it was intended/designed to get rid of macro feature from Math then get rid
of the menu items related to macros. They are there, they are not functioning
and this is a bug.

So the bug is -- menu is still there, it should be removed.

I figured out what happened. The update script since m6 didn't update anything
but installed another copy of OOo.

There are two issues here:
a) update means update, not "install one more copy", so please keep the
meaning of script naming
b) you make the life of testers more difficult -- now I have to manually copy
all the settings from m4 to RC1, or RC2 because those versions ignore previous
OOo3.0x versions. They are aware only of 2.4 series. This is really a bit of
an insult -- don't play cat&mouse games with OOo testers

When I start recording in writer I get nice dialog with stop button. I can
save the macro on stop. Etc.

But in math module (called from writer) this does not work. I can start
recording and I won't even know it anything is been recorded.

For human it is easy to express the will -- "I would like this to go left, and
this to go right", but for OOo it is hard to do.

There are only tricks and workarounds and it even works fine till the moment
your document is going to be complex, everything slows down and it is hard to
manage text because of all tricks you put to achieve simple goals.

For me it was formulas -- thanks to lack of multialignment you have to put all
formulas in tables to get numbers for them. But what if I have formulas in
tables already?

So -> this wish. Multi-alignment is needed to achieve goal by OOo built-in
feature not by playing tricks.
