Please reopen this! It still exists on OO 2.3 and is very annoying. I have a
document with about 15 JPEG images in frames and they keep disappearing randomly
when I only scroll to another page.

This bug has persisted for years and makes OOo unusable for any somewhat complex
layout.

When starting the Letter Wizard in Finnish OOo, the wizard fails to start and
after that OOo is left in a state where it is not possible exit the application
with File-Exit.

The problem is caused with the wrong directory for the templates used by the
Letter Wizard. The Finnish templates are located in directory
share/template/fi/wizard/letter/en-US. If the templates are moved to directory
share/template/fi/wizard/letter/fi, the Letter Wizard will start properly.

Actually, there are no localized templates for Finnish; the templates are really
English templates. But they are still in the wrong directory.

Other wizards work ok.

This has persisted for some time, but the reason was not known.

Automatic line break can occur after a hyphen even when there is space on the
left side of the hyphen. For example: Having f -bar at end of line breaks
as follows:

f -
bar

instead of:

foo
-bar

as it should.

The problem occurs with the normal hyphen character, and not with the
non-breaking hyphen.

Such use of hyphen might not be very common in English. At least in Finnish it
is very common. For example, in cases such as Kirjoitin tämän OpenOffice Writer
-ohjelmalla (I wrote this with the OpenOffice Writer -program in English,
though English does not use the hyphen there). The problem is so common in
Finnish that we possibly can not recommend upgrading to OOo 2.3 if the problem
remains. I just had about 20 such errors in a 70-page report.

Language setting has no effect on the problem. The problem occurred in Writer,
but might be a more general framework problem. It occurs at least in the
development versions of 2.3 (at least 680m220-225). I've had a confirmation from
at least one other user.

There doesn't actually seem to be a way to input negative (BCE) dates. I would
expect that something like -20.7.356 or 20.7.-356 should work (Finnish
locale has DD.MM.). Entering a formula =-20.7.356 gives 14.6.3443.

Also entering dates such as 31.12.1 or 31.12.0001 changes it to
31.12.2001. Is there any way to input dates in years between 1-99 CE?

Should this be a separate issue?

This problem still exists OOo in 2.2 and is very annoying. I simply can't use
image frames because half of them keep disappearing randomly when I scroll to
another page. This behaviour has existed also in many previous versions, at
least from OOo 2.0.

I don't know if bug #69521 applied only to EPS images; I get the problem with
JPEGs. Please reopen either issue.

If the decimal separator is comma (,), the result of XPath calculations is comma
even if the decimal separator in source values is point. For example,
1.2*2=2,4. This is clearly faulty behaviour, because numeric input control
assumes that the decimal separator is point. Therefore, it displays for example
1,2 as 12,00.

Please reopen, this still occurs in OOo 2.2rc3.

Last time I noticed it was after I had system crash in my computer and had to
recover the Writer document. After recovery, all images had /home/magi
replaced with ...

My default path is /home/magi/texts/, so maybe the .. is an attempt to
change to a path relative to that. I get many paths such as
file:///../texts/image.png.

For example, original path:
  file:///home/magi/data/oo-web/fi/www/kuvat/ooo2.0-half.png

After crash and recovery:
  file:///../data/oo-web/fi/www/kuvat/ooo2.0-half.png

Bug #70310 had similar problems after update.

If OOo saves my document automatically and then crashes, all images with path
/home/magi (home directory) replaced with .. after recovery.

For example, original path:
  file:///home/magi/data/oo-web/fi/www/kuvat/ooo2.0-half.png

After crash and recovery:
  file:///../data/oo-web/fi/www/kuvat/ooo2.0-half.png

Bug #11624 had similar problems, as did bug #70310 after update. Both are closed
and were slightly different anyhow, so I'm creating a new issue.

This occurred in Writer, but possibly affects other document types as well.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Enable AutoRecovery (set time to 1 minute)
2. Create a new text document
3. Insert a linked image
4. Do NOT save the document manually
5. Wait until the document is automatically saved
6. Kill the soffice.bin process (kill -9)
7. Restart OOo and recover the document

Observe that the image link has corrupted.

The XML representation changes for example from:

draw:image xlink:href=../kuvat/rantakuva-sml.jpg xlink:type=simple
xlink:show=embed xlink:actuate=onLoad draw:filter-name=lt;Kaikki
muodotgt;/

in original document to:

draw:image xlink:href=/../texts/test/oo/kuvat/rantakuva-sml.jpg
xlink:type=simple xlink:show=embed xlink:actuate=onLoad/

in recovered document.

I'm not sure if the default path affects this somehow. My default path is
usually /home/magi/texts/ ($HOME/texts), so maybe the .. is an attempt to
change to a path relative to that. I get many paths such as
file:///../texts/image.png. However, this seems to work with default path set
to /home/magi ($HOME), so maybe the default path is not the problem.

My platform is Ubuntu/Edgy, OOo 2.2rc3-fi. Similar corruption has happened also
earlier with many other versions.

When adding or removing a paragraph break, writer freezes or crashes.

The document contains:
- Heading 1
- Section with two columns and several paragraphs of text
- Heading 1 with a page break

The crash/freeze occurs when trying to add or remove a paragraph break (newline)
in the section, or some other similar editing such as changing paragraph styles.
The problem goes away if the second heading (with a page break) is removed. I
will attach an example document.

Found in: OOE680_m6 Build-1 (1.12.2006), Finnish version, on Ubuntu Linux.

This occurred again when updating to OOE680_m4 from 2.0.4 release build.

This possibly also caused corruption of all links to external images in Writer
to go wrong. It occurred once, but now it again works just fine. Possibly it was
the first document I opened, corrected the default path settings, and then the
image links broke. Not sure.

I'm using Finnish version from Pavel's builds under Ubuntu Linux. Don't know if
that matters.

My paths were as follows in OOo 2.0.3:

  Home dir: /home/magi/texts
  Templates: /home/magi/texts/templates

After updating to 2.0.4rc3, they suddenly changed as follows:

  Home dir: /home/magi/texts/texts/
  Templates: /home/magi/texts/texts/templates

The same occurred on two different machines. Also, opening a new Writer document
displayed an error box, because it could not find the custom default template.

On the other machine, I could not get the templates directory to work in
creating a new document from template, even after correcting the path. This is
strange, because it worked just fine on the other machine.

OOo was installed from OOo_OOD680_m5_LinuxIntel_install_fi_deb.tar.gz (Finnish
version) to Kubuntu. Did not test with English version.

[sw-issues] [Issue 5477] changing default numbering from toolbar

2006-03-22 Thread magi42
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=5477

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Mar 22 01:24:40 -0800
2006 ---
This important issue seems to be about four years old now. The original poster
mentioned Australian and US standards for documents, and I'm trying to conform
to the Finnish standards. The built-in bullet style is horrible and completely
useless, and working around it is difficult to do consistently.

Our solution has been to disable the list/numbering buttons in the toolbar
altogether, and define a new button that runs a macro that sets the current
style as List 1 or Numbering 1. However, this doesn't allow toggling the
list/numbering as the default list/numbering button does.

A quick solution could be a user setting for the default list and numbering
styles, either to a numbering style or a paragraph style with a numbering. This
way a change in document format might not be necessary.

A more proper solution might allow binding both a list and a numbering style to
a paragraph style, but so that it is not active automatically, as is the case
currently. For example, have both a List style and Numbering style
selections in the Numbering tab. Have a check box in front of them, Use list
style automatically and Use numbering style automatically. Make the check
boxes exclusive (but both can be off). The negative side with this solution is
that l/n styles do not have paragraph settings such as margins, which might be
desirable in many cases. For example, Text body paragraphs usually have bottom
margin, but list item paragraphs often should not.

Another solution might be switching the paragraph style to some defined style,
either as a document setting or a style-specific setting. This would allow
different paragraph settings in the lists and numbering. Toggling list off could
be difficult with this approach; the program could look upwards for the previous
non-list paragraph style, and then toggle to that.

Yet another solution could use conditional styles. For example, when
list/numbering is toggled on in Text body style, it would use a list/numbering
paragraph style defined as conditional in the Text body style. Also this would
allow different paragraph settings in the lists and numbering.

Then there's the question of paragraph settings at ends of a list. For example,
the first list item often has a bigger top margin and the last bigger bottom
margin than other list items. So if, for example, the above conditional style
solution would be used, there could be separate conditions for First list
item, List item, and Last list item, so that one could bind them to
appropriate list paragraph styles.

If a paragraph has Keep with next attribute set, the Do not split is assumed
implicitly, even when it is not set from the paragraph settings explicitly. ODF
definition doesn't mention such implicit behaviour, so I think this is a bug,
even if someone could consider it useful default behaviour.

This is problematic when implementing subparagaph headings. For example:

Heading The text begins on the same line after
the actual heading. This paragraph should
be allowed to split. However, if we
have a longer heading such as in the
  following case:

Here is a very long heading

Now we begin the text in the next paragraph,
but a page break should not occur between
this paragraph and the heading above.

Well, ok, fixing the do-not-split behaviour doesn't fix all the problems with
this formatting style, but it could help a bit.

The default heading styles do not have Do not split setting currently. If the
behaviour of the Keep with next is fixed, heading styles probably should have
the Do not split setting on by default.

Allow paragraph breaks within a line. I couldn't find an older issue about this,
but there might very probably be one, as this is so obvious problem. It might
require rather radical changes, but it would be rather useful.

My main reason for requesting such a feature is that official documents (at
least in Finland) have formatting rules that require short headings to be on the
same line as the actual text body (which is usually intended 4,58 cm). For
example:

1 This is a normal heading that is rather long

Here is just plain text, which is normally
written with the Text body style. You
usually want this paragraph to be kept together
with the heading above.

2 Heading On the left was a heading that was so short
that it did not reach the 4,58 cm indentation,
so it is written on the same line as the
plain text.

Here is another paragraph with plain text, which
should typically have style Text body. However,
a page break should be allowed between this and
the paragraph above.

The problems should be obvious. We want to have heading paragraphs with a
heading style, to allow numbering and possibly a different font, etc. But
heading paragraphs have Keep with next paragraph attribute, which is obviously
important. But if many of the successive paragraphs have short heading, they
will all be kept together. It would also be nice to have the line break occur
automatically when the heading is too long.

I don't know about other text processing systems, but at least LaTeX can have
such paragraphs. For example, the \paragraph and \subparagraph are headings that
are displayed on the same line as the normal text. Also, for example in
mathematical definitions and such, the Definition x.xx is often written with a
different style than the text following it. Currently, it doesn't seem to be
possible to move LaTeX documents cleanly to OOo because of problems such as
these.

Having a negative top margin for the first paragraph after a short heading could
solve this problem partially, but it would require setting the paragraph style
manually depending on the length of the heading.

I finally noticed what causes this. Here are the steps:

- Create or open a text document
- Select Tools - Outline numbering
- Select Numbering tab
- Select some outline level
- Change the paragraph style with the mouse wheel (not from keyboard)

All the other style associations, except for the selected level, disappear in
the box on the right. Changing the paragraph style works just fine from
keyboard, but not with mouse wheel.

And yes, this occurs still in OOB680_m5.

I can't get this replicated any more in OOB680_m1. This might mean that the
problem has been fixed, but doesn't necessarily, as in 2.0.1 it occurred in one
computer, but not in another.

I'll have to reinstall 2.0.1 to test it again.

Open Tools/Outline numbering/Numbering, change the Paragraph style in some
level, and the paragraph styles in some or all other levels are changed to
none.

This therefore prevents changing the paragraph styles associated with outline
levels. This possibility might not be needed every day, but is still an
important feature. Many users may also accidentally change the outline styles,
and as this doesn't work, it effectively corrupts their documents.

The problem occurs at least in m142 and m143. My platform is (k)ubuntu.

It's not possible (or at least obvious) to get the focus to child windows such
as the Style Catalog (F11) with the keyboard. The windows open nicely, but it's
not possible to get to them from the keyboard. This is a usability issue for
experienced users, and of course a big accessibility problem.

If I remember correctly, this worked just fine in 2.0, where the child windows
were just normal windows switchable with Alt+Tab. Focusing broke entirely in
about m136, where it wasn't possible to get the focus properly even with the
mouse. That problem seems to have been fixed in 680m142, but the keyboard
problem remains.

If there's some obscure key to switch to the child windows (I don't know if
there is), it's way too unobvious to the user. At least I can't find a key
binding for it. And just switching windows should use standard key bindings, not
some obscurity.

The problem might be Window Manager specific, I don't know, but it occurs at
least in KDE with KWM in RH9, FC4, and Kubuntu.

I hope the framework/ui is the proper module, if not, please move this.

If you try these with a simple Writer document (odt), such as one containing
only a paragraph Some non-ascii letters: öäåéèáÖÄÅ, OOo 1.1.5 makes the export
with the proper encoding (using simple_example_1.xsl), while 2.0 (or m136 or
m137) does not (using simple_example_2.xsl).

Notice that the filter for OOo 1.1.x (simple_example_1.xsl) can be used also in
2.0 as a .sxw filter, when it is set as such from the filter settings and the
document is a .sxw document. The encoding problem seems to occur also then.

Notice also that the Test filter output window always displays the result in
UTF-8, thus also ignoring the encoding. Maybe that's a small bug too, but not so
important as it's just a test tool. The problem can be seen (also) when actually
exporting the document.

Strange, earlier I thought first that the suggested workaround (disabling the
built-in hyphenator) worked, but now I can't seem to get to work again, not even
with English (or German) documents.

When I do a fresh install of 680m138, with ONLY US-English installed and no
language packs (no Finnish or French hyphenation), the word wrap bugs in
US-English (when the document language is set to English and automatic
hyphenation from paragraph settings). Hyphenation itself works just fine in
English. The word wrap bug can be avoided by disabling automatic hyphenation or
the hyphenator altogether, but then there's no (English) hyphenation.

Note that there doesn't seem to be Finnish or French hyphenation included in the
basic EN-US installation package, and neither in the language packs (rpms built
by Pavel).

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1. Create a new Writer document
2. Use Tools - XML Filter Settings - Test Filter - Current document with for
example XHTML Writer export filter
3. Close the XML Filter dialogs
4. Edit the file share/xslt/export/xhtml/header.xsl, for example change the text
in tag 'xsl:attribute name=contentStarOffice/OpenOffice.org...' to something
else.
5. Use the Tools - ... - Test Filter - Current document again as in Step 2
6. Observe that the string is still unchanged: 'meta name=generator
content=StarOffice/OpenOffice.org...'
7. Quit and restart Writer
8. Do Step 2/5 again.

So, obviously the export filter was not reloaded after editing it, but only
after restarting OOo.

Please do not mark this as RESOLVED, as it is not.

Thanks for the workaround. It seems that the built-in rule-based Finnish
hyphenation does not work at all. (We have also a dictionary-based hyphenator
plugin, which does work.)

If I didn't mention it before, the problem is with most other punctuation
characters as well, such as quotes, etc. It still exists in 680m137.

Contrary to what I said earlier, the problem still exists in m136 and m137,
though even small changes in layout or fonts can cause it to change or go away.

The freeze may be caused by interaction of the caption frames and the text on
the next pages. When the layout is changed (for example images moved or text
removed), the text flow in the columns changes, causing the freeze. I haven't
been able to pinpoint the problem yet.

When automatic hyphenation is on for a paragraph, words with braces are broken
after or before a brace. For example, (foobar) can be wrapped as (\nfoobar).

This is new in 680m136, and worked correctly in 2.0.

I'll add that the problem is not Writer-specific, as it occurs in text frames in
Draw, when using automatic hyphenation (Tools-Language-Hyphenation). As well
as in Calc (automatic hyphenation from cell settings).

Notice that the problem does not occur with the non-automatic hyphenation (in
Writer Tools-Language-Hyphenation).

There is a rounding error in measures such as margins and heights at least when
they are saved or loaded. For example, a margin that has been given as 1.32cm
in the GUI is saved in styles.xml as:

   style:paragraph-properties ... fo:margin-top=1.319cm ... /

Sometimes the measures seem to have an extra decimal:

   style:header-footer-properties fo:min-height=0.101cm ... /

While these rounding errors may be insignificant otherwise, they could be the
cause for some big problems with register-true paragraph formatting that I have
been experiencing. They also make it difficult to make millimeter-exact page
formatting.

I do not know whether the rounding error occurs during saving or loading, or in
the setting dialogs.

This problem is probably caused by conflicting translation of both Heading and
Header to Pääotsikko, causing the corruption of style inheritance hierarchy.
Styles originally under Heading and moved under Header, and therefore the
formatting changes.

This occurs also when loading OOo 2.0 (odt) documents written with English OOo.

It is also possible that this causes some of the crashes that I have been
experiencing with the paragraph style dialog, especially when changing the style
organization.

I have fixed the conflicting translations and will see if the problem still
occurs in m135 or m136.

Encoding parameter is ignored in XSLT output. For example, the following
encoding definition has no effect, but OOo 2.0 outputs UTF-8.

  xsl:output method=text encoding=ISO-8859-1/

This works correctly in OOo 1.1.5, as it does with other XSLT processors, such
as xsltproc in Linux.

I am making an export filter to text file, so this would be very important.

When an XSLT filter file is edited, it is not reloaded in OOo, apparently never
again or at least too lazily. I understood from other issues that the XSLTs are
cached, but it seems too permanently.

OOo 1.1.5 seems to reload the filters properly during export, OOo 2.0 doesn't.

It's annoying to have to restart OOo every time you edit a filter; it makes
filter testing a pain.

Writer freezes when I move an image frame slightly so that it causes a paragraph
with a long word to wrap to below the frame. It also moves the two-column part
below the frame down, so the problem could also be somewhere there. I can
reproduce this every time.

The problem occurs at least in OOo 2.0 RC2, Linux Red Hat 9.

I will attach two screenshots illustrating the crash. After the first
screenshot, I have moved the frame slightly to left, the text had wrapped, and
Writer has frozen. (The second screenshot of frozen Writer contains part of the
unupdated KSnapshot tool - ignore it.) I will attach also the document; the
problem occurs on page 9.

This crash occurs always, and corrupts the database, making Base unusable for
me.

I created two very simple tables, and then tried to create a form with a subform
with the form wizard. I selected all the fields in the tables to the form, and
linked the tables in the wizard by an id field. Otherwise, I used the defaults.

The tables were empty. The main table (shoppings) contained: id field (integer,
automatic), date/time. The dependant table (items purchased) contained: id field
(integer, automatic), foreign id (for linking to main table), another foreign id
(shop id), floating-point field (price), integer field (quantity).

At the last wizard phase, I clicked Finish. The dialog didn't close, but
something appeared in the form page in the background. I clicked again, again
something happened in the background. Third time, and OOo crashed. Earlier it
has crashed from the first click.

After the database is restored, the second table is usually lost. I think OOo
doesn't save the second table properly to disk after exiting the table design. I
don't know what the problem exactly is, maybe it doesn't save it when exiting
from desing mode, and leaves the Save button disabled in the main view, so it's
not possible to save it manually either.

The crash occurs at least in OOo 2.0 RC2 (and occurred in 1.9.130), Finnish
localized version, from Pavel's builds. Occurs with both jre1.5.0_05 and jre
from j2sdk1.4.2_05. I'm using Red Hat 9, but I've tested the crash also in a
Mandrake computer.

Bug 46116 seemed to have similar problems, though related to Excel sheets.

Fixed in 2.0 translations.

The names of the Greek letters were changed to English in 2.0. Going back to
English in function and code names was a decision made primarily for Calc, so I
don't know how reasonable it was for Math. I'd think most people who write with
Math know Greek letters better in English.

This occurred only in Finnish language version, so the worksforme status was
probably unjustified. I'll leave it at that though for now.

This is fixed in Finnish version of OOo 2.0, where the Calc function names are
in English.

The crash does not seem to occur in some situations, but I don't quite know
what. It doesn't seem to matter if the table has some data or is empty, but I'm
not certain.

The crash seems to occur also when I create a simple form, not with a subform,
so using a subform is probably not relevant. Oh, I've set the in blocks
control arrangement in the wizard. The crash occurs also when I use English as
GUI language in OOo.
