The 3.0.1 (final) still shows the problem. Reproduced on a HP 6930p laptop using
Windows Vista this time. Couldn't find a German 3.1 RC, so I didn't test that
one.

Enable smooth scrolling. Scroll up or down using the arrow key.

In Word you can use Ctrl-G (or Ctrl-F?) to search the next item, and
Ctrl-Shift-G (resp. F ...) to search backward. This is convenient if you are
searching/replacing through a lot of occurrences manually and miss one and have
to go one step back.

Hi,

I just lost an afternoon's work after Vista had completely crashed (just the HDD
rattling, nothing moving any more for 10 minutes, then I did a hard reset).

Writer told me it had restored the files from the autosave information when I
restarted it, but the document status is today noon again. VERY BAD. The machine
was running all the afternoon with Writer open.

Auto Save (Speichern von AutoWiederherstellungsinfo) is set to 15 Minutes.

What's going on here?? Thanks for fixing this asap.

R.

I can still (again?) reproduce the problem in 3.0 RC 2. Or is this a
misunderstanding?

Example:

First page in the document has right page layout (must have in Writer)
Second page in the document has left page layout
Third page in the document has right page layout
Fourth page in the document has right page layout

Current display with two pages on the screen:

1 2
3 4

Should be:

(no page) 1
2 3
(blank) 4

= It is currently not possible to show two book pages in parallel in their
correct position. As the book starts on a right page, is no first left page. It
should be omitted on the screen. If two right (or left...) pages follow each
other, a blank page should be shown on the screen. Imho this has not been
completely thought through yet... Or is there a hidden setting which I
overlooked?

Grahamperrin,

Please, do you have an issue # for the
'missing alt key assignment' issue?

It is issue 4756.

I expressed my view there long time ago, that only supporting the alt key (above
all on Windows machines) would give keyboard layout compatibility with Word, and
that I am convinced that only the widest keyboard compatibility possible will
avoid this not feeling quite right of our users which you mentioned, too. As
we know, most of our users switch to OOo from Word. So supporting compatible
keyboard layout is crucial for them to feel at home when using OOo and finally
for the success off OOo.

I'll be back here soon to answer your Mac question. Sitting at a PC right now...

Looks like everybody is talking about this issue, but nothing is done. I just
noticed that I'm unable to use dotted lines in Writer for a table. And this is
annoying, as I'd like to have way to just give a slight hint at the cell
borders, but not have them fully drawn.

Furthermore this is an obvious incompatibility with MS Office.

@grahamperrin: What setting do you mean exactly, I do not find these settings
(using a German installation here, so this is a bit tricky to find...). Do you
mean the Mac control panel and there language settings, or OOo settings? Could
you give me the exact way to get to the settings?

BTW: The key assignment in the OOo keyboard settings says Apple-left/right is
used to jump wordwise. This is obviously wrong, as alt-left/right is used and
Apple-left/right is used to jump to the beginning/end of the line. (But you
cannot assign the alt key at all there... Might be that the famous missing alt
key assignment issue which is also there on PCs plays a trick on us here - why
not finally fix that one?).

My report 49335 is a duplicate of this one here (sorry). I'm just going to mark
it as such. To repeat what I said there in addition to the report here:
Shift-Ctrl-Left/Right mistakenly has the function of Shift-Alt-Left/Right on my
Mac. I'm using a Macbook Pro 2.16 GHz here.

I can use Alt-Cursor to jump word-wise in Writer 3.0 RC2 for mac, but I have to
use Shift-Option-Cursor (Option=Apple-key) to select text word-wise. The correct
combination to select word-wise should be Shift-Alt-Cursor (as it is, for
instance, in the Firefox window I'm using to type this issue report). The way
the function is assigned currently is not consistent and should be corrected.

In the attached file (see below), the Word Endanwender is hyphenated at the
wrong position (En-danwender instead of End-anwender). I tried to correct this
by setting a manual hyphen using ctrl-(-) (i.e. ctrl plus the - key). The
manual hyphen is inserted correctly, but the word is still hyphenated at the
wrong position.

In English:

If you add a manual hyphen to a word, the word will only be hyphenated at the
manual hyphen's position. There will be no more additional automatic hyphenation
for this word. The hyphenation of words with manual hyphens is done
independently of the settings in the text flow [don't know if translation of
Textfluss is correct] register.

This is a clear contradiction to what is happening in the example file. The only
possibility to circumvent the problem is to add a = at the beginning of the word
in the user dictionary, which completely prevents hyphenation for the word, but
this probably results in a bad page layout by text spreaded too wide over the
line.

As this bug probably prevents many users from correcting wrong hyphenation I set
priority to 2. Would be good to have this corrected in 3.0.

after the file was sent to the print spooler, so the printing itself worked.
Could not quit Writer using the normal quit function, had to use the

Thanks for your answer. Press alt-u, for instance, and you don't get a modifier
bit. The field just stays zero. Press apple-u and you get bit 2 set. Looks like
you never get modifier bits for ctrl or alt. Do normal mac apps not get modifier
bits either? Or are they being swallowed somewhere in OOo?

Well, looks like we won't be able to fix this then.

Not supporting the third modifier (Alt on PCs, Ctrl on Mac) looks like a severe
own goal to me, as you're not able to clone the MS Office UI on OOo that way.
Like most of the people on this planet I have to use Word and Writer in
parallel, and that way you can't really get used to a keyboard layout as you
have to switch back and forth all the time. IMHO things like these are the main
reasons why OOo will never be able to get a serious market share compared to MS
Office (for the same reason the undoubtedly more efficient Dvorak keyboard
layout will never replace qwerty/z...).

Using AltKeyHandler I could at least partially fix the problem. Not being able
to solve it on Mac is a darn pity...

RC1 produces garbage when pressing PageUp or PageDown key. The program is
completely unusable this way. I use a 4 years old IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop with
Windows XP, newest drivers installed. It looks like a new problem with 3.0 RC 1
to me (I have the German version). 2.x versions have worked flawlessly on this
machine for years, afaik previous 3.x betas, too (at least I did not notice the
problem). See the screenshot I'll supply in a minute. I'll supply the involved
odt file on request. The problem does not occur in the Mac version of rc1.

Disabling smooth scrolling (dunno the exact translationin english, in German it
is weiches Scrollen, Tools, Options, OOo Writer, Display) solves the problem.
Maybe this is the reason why I did not notice this problem with earlier 3.x
versions, because I had this option enabled a few days ago only.

Lowered Priority to P3 as there is a workaround. If Smooth Scrolling is switched
on by default, it should be put to P2 again, as it might affect many people.

Hi

Dunno if this is by intention, but as it is impossible to use Ctrl and Alt on
Mac as Modifiers to assign Macros etc. to on 3.0rc1, I tried to adapt the
AltKeyHandler macro suite for a mac.

But there is a show stopper: IMHO the keyhandler does not get the right modifier
bits in the KeyEvent parameter.

Current situation: The shift key delivers 1 (correct), and the Apple key
delivers 2 (on PCs this corresponds to the Ctrl key). 4 does never appear,
except when you use Fn together with a key which has a second meaning (like Fn-u
which corresponds to the 4 of the numeric keypad on powerbooks).

Should-be: The shift key delivers 1, and the Apple key delivers 2. Alt delivers
4. Ctrl delivers 8 (or vice versa, I suggest to use the bits as they appear in
other mac applications, dunno which ones they are). Fn should not deliver any
modifier bits, as in my understanding, it is only a modifier key to simulate
keystrokes coming from keys that do not exist on the smaller powerbook keyboard,
but exist on a normal Mac keyboard, so when you press Fn-4, the pattern should
be the same as when you press 4 on the numerical keyboard of a normal Mac
keyboard.

Or is this a misunderstanding, and applications do not get alt / ctrl status
using modifier bits from the OS? How else would they determine the status of
these keys...?

Use the AltKeyHandler macro suite (google to find), install the KeyHandler using
the SetupAltKeyHandler function (or by correctly installing the suite) and look
at the KeyHandler_keyPressed function to reproduce the problem.

Thanks,

R.

I experience an extremely annoying behavior with a 120 pages document on my
Pentium M with 1.7 GHz and 2GB of RAM: If I type fast, characters are often
swapped, above all when the machine is running at its performance limit, i.e.,
when characters are not displayed instantly (this sometimes happens - dunno
why). This problem only happens in Writer, and not in other applications on my
system, so it's definitely not my typos but Writer which swaps the characters.

The problem appeared in earlier versions of Writer, too, above all when typing
footnotes. But the 2.4.1 version seems to be much worse. It is sometimes almost
impossible to type. I cannot reproduce it here with OOo 3.0 Beta 2 for the
moment. This might be due to the fact that only an English version of 3.0B3 is
available and my document is in German, so the language features (underline
typing errors etc) are disabled.

I will not post the document which is creating the problem here for privacy
reasons. Please contact me via e-mail if you need it.

G. Marxen is right. The fact that the headings section always jumps back to the
top on reopen is very annoying as soon as you start to work with longer
documents (above all where the headings section has to be scrolled in the

When exporting cross references to footnotes (other crossref targets have not
been tested but are likely to show the same problem), these are converted to
normal text. The cross reference function of the Word format is not supported.

Example:

OOo Writer:
1) This is footnote 1, the target.
2) Refer to footnote [Crossref to 1].

[Crossref to 1] is a field and can be edited.

When exported to Word, it looks the following:

1) This is footnote 1, the target.
2) Refer to footnote 1.

There is no more field in footnote 2. You cannot continue to edit this document
in Word withouth changing cross references manually. This is a hassle as I have
to exchange the document with a co-author using word. This lacking feature makes
OOo useless if you want to work on longer documents with co-authors who are
using word.

PS. I have made the experience that issue reportings via the issuezilla
reporting tool are usually just ignored. I do hope this time this will be
different...

Hmm... I have to correct myself (and adjust the subject). If you open the
exported file in Word, cross references are being shown as fields. But it is
impossible to import the just exported Word file back to Writer. The enhancement
should therefore be made to the import filter and should be even easier to
implement, as the Word cross references format is already understood and
implemented in the export filter.

Cursor movements

Hmm... I see your point. But could Word compatibility be a reason for a
decision? If there are no other reasons?

How is that different to Writer? Maybe I misunderstand what you have written
but
to me it looks as the same what Writer does.

You're right, Word does the same here. Guess I just wanted to show the
difference between the two possible behaviors then.

Cheers, R.

Word and FrameMaker support the behavior I suggest (ok, word is sometimes buggy
here...). Furthermore it is quite common in scientific literature to have a
continuously numbered paragraph format.
One could change the behavior without any UI change. You just have to add the
functionality to the restart numbering command in the context menue.

Please re-think.

Changed the Component to Word Processor. The bug I mentioned is still there in
2.0.4.

BTW: It seems user reported issues are consequentially not considered worth
looking at or even being corrected in OOo. I have reported or contributed to
some thirty issues during the last 18 months, of which *none* has ever been
corrected (about one fourth is closed in the meantime due to duplicate etc.) or
at least been assigned a target milestone. Do you have to be a member of a
secret group to contribute to OOo in a way that is heard by development or
what?

I am seriosly considering to stop my contributions. My time is too valuable for
such a project.

The current solution is not intuitive/logical at all (still in 2.0.3) and should
really be changed.

I had the problem initially described by bulbul in issue 15265 with bullets
staying at a fixed font size while the paragraph size changed, and I was unable
to change this behavior even following help pages. Astonishingly I also had some
character styles that adopted the font size from the underlying paragraph styles
without problems. I just couldn't find the setting that would explain the
different behavior.

In a discussion forum I was told the solution finally.

The problem is like pointed out by bulbul that there is no way to set the
character style font size to none. The current solution is to press the
Standard button on the font tab of the character style dialog. This button
assigns a 12pt font according to the dialog settings, but in reality the font
size is taken from the paragraph style, i.e., the 12pt setting stays without
effect.

Furthermore, I consider this not as an enhancement but as a defect, as the
dialog settings and the real behavior differ.

One should also add none options to the other character style settings (font,
text style [standard, bold, italic, both], etc., also on different tabs) to get
the behavior shown.

When using the spell check dialog, adding a word to a dictionary needs two
clicks (select the drop down box, then select the dictionary each time). This is
very annoying as you have to repeat this for every unrecognized word.

One should be able to choose the dictionary once and for all and then add the
words with only one click or pressing only one key.

bedeutet... Es sollte einen passenderer Begriff gewählt werden
(Gross-/Kleinschreibung beachten, Gross/Klein beachten o.dgl.).

Create a new document, enter some text, add a footnote. Add a single symbol with
a different than the default font to that footnote (I usually use a bold dark
square from the Marlett Font to mark unfinished points in my texts - inserted by
a macro, but this does not make a difference here).

Save the document, close it, reopen it.

The footnote number now has the font of the symbol instead of the footnote
number default font. With Marlett it isn't even a number.

See the attached file for my example.

The missing possibility to use the Alt key for shortcuts is IMHO one of the big
shortcomings of OOo and above all one main reason why OOo cannot be be used
easily as an MS Office replacement.

People who have to use Word and OOo Writer in coexistence want to use the same
key shortcuts for both applications and want therefore to customise OOo to use
the well-established word shortcuts. It is a hassle always having to switch
between different key sets if you switch applications. Word makes heavy use of
the Alt key, for instance when selecting heading levels.

The popularity of the AltKeyHandler Macro (even though this software is a hassle
to install - impossible for non-nerds... - and use - because it is not
integrated in the normal ui functions for keyboard assignments and furthermore
often fails to function correctly) and the frequency of questions regarding this
issue in discussion groups clearly shows that this issue MUST FINALLY BE SOLVED.

The fact that under some OSs the Alt key seems to be unusable for applications
(Linux?) cannot be accepted as a reason not to support this key in other OS
versions of OOo.

When will you finally act?

I was just confused because I could _not_ change the shortcut for a template as
I can do it in Word... I'd find it much more intuitive to assign a shortcut via
the style dialog than via the well-hidden and overcrowded keyboard dialog. And
why not allow two different ways to do it? Glad this feature is planned.

The problem seems to be more general. Use your mouse wheel or scrollbars to
scroll to a position where the text cursor is not visible any more.

Additional examples that let the visible section jump back to the text cursor
are:

- Press a cursor key (arrow)
- Press a character key
- unselect a graphical element

If you are just proofreading a text and press an arrow key (or if you're doing
anything else that has nothing to do with the cursor position, like saving, as
described by rpeckhoff), this behavior is confusing.

The same applies to working with graphics. Often I use a magnified view, so the
cursor is out of sight. As soon as you unselect a graphical element using
Escape, the visible section jumps back to the cursor in the text and you have to
search the correct section again.

Word, for instance, acts more intuitively: If you hit an arrow key, the cursor
is set to the lowest or highest line of the currently visible text, depending on
the arrow key you hit (if the arrow down is hit, the cursor is set to the lowest
line, if you hit the arrow up, the cursor is set to the top line). If the
document is saved, nothing is changed. Same for unselecting graphical elements.

If you continue typing, though, the cursor is not moved and Word moves the
visible text section to the cursor position, which is intuitive again.

It would be worth thinking about different actions in Writer (as saving, hitting
arrow keys etc.) and their most reasonable effect on the cursor and/or the
position of the visible text section. The current situation is not satisfactory
at all.

Thanks,

Simon

See the following attachment. The paragraph after the line starting with 2.
Teil cannot be set to continuous numbering by disabling the restart numbering
option in the context menu. Even if the option is disabled, the numbering still
starts at §1 instead of §3.

The file uses outline numbering.

It is unusual for word processors to /mandatorily/ reset numbering of a
paragraph level if it follows a paragraph of a higher level. Both Word and
Framemaker leave the choice to the user. Continuous numbering of certain
paragraph levels is also widely practiced in scientific literature.

[sw-issues] [Issue 1526] Small Caps are different s izes twixt Word and StarWriter

Wouldn't there be a way to include a typographically more or less correct size
of small caps depending on font properties (x height)?

The - apparently quite good - German Wikipedia article on Kapitälchen names
two major problems for fake small caps (in contrast to genuine small caps that
are included in fonts): They are either too tall (Word) or too lightweight (if
reduced to x height). In either case they catch ones eye if one looks at a text
from a certain distance. Wouldn't it be possible to chose the x height and print
them somewhat darker than letters just reduced in size? Furthermore small caps
should be spaced by .5 to 1 point according to the article. (Any comments of
typography specialists?)

If an automatic solution is not feasible, I'd plead for a manual percentage
setting, too.

Within justified text, sometimes automatic hyphens seem to be preceded by a thin
space. Instead the hypen should immediately follow the first part of the
hyphenated word.

See the attached file: The hyphen at the end of the second line is correct, the
one at the end of the fifth line is not, which is irritating.

Printing is ok.

I use a Thinkpad T42 with ati mobility radeon 9600 graphics.

The Tabelle menu lacks a hotkey to be activated using Alt (like Alt-d for the
Datei menu). I assume this was a mistake of the translator.

Proposition: Use the hotkey used in old Writer versions.

Windows (at least XP, probably 2000, too. In other windows versions this was
imho a mouse driver function) has a very comfortable mouse option in the system
control panel that lets the mouse cursor jump to the default button if a dialog
is opened. So you don't have to search for that button if you use the mouse, but
only have to leftclick if you are happy with the default settings.

OOo seems not to support this option - probably because of the platform
independent implementation. It would be very comfortable if this function could
also be supported.

I am looking for a way to create paragraph numbers (in German: Randziffern;
dict.leo.org calls them recitals) that are written in the page margin area for
every text body paragraph of a book.

The numbers should be on the left of the text on left pages and on the right of
the text on right pages, and there should only be one number on the top line of
every paragraph. I not talking about line numbers!

Up to now I have used frames anchored to the first line of each paragraph
containing a text in a numbered paragraph format as a workaround. But you have
to insert such a frame to every paragraph by hand, it is a hassle to create
cross-references, and the frames are very fragile (i.e., if you by accident
select a frame and press a cursor button, the frame shifts to a different line.
So the risk of printing errors is high.) See the attached example for my current
status and the url for a discussion to the topic.

This way of numbering paragraphs is very common in legal texts (mainly in
German, but also in other European legal texts).

It should be possible to achieve automatic margin numbers by extending the
paragraph numbering feature by a mirror paragraph number on odd [even] pages
option like the one that exists for frames (see the cited discussion for
details).

Furthermore it is impossible to create an automatic index which references the
recitals instead of pages. See the corresponding issue I'm just going to add to
the database.

The automatic index function should optionally reference paragraph numbers
instead of page numbers.

Issue 63563 proposes an enhancement for paragraph numbering (recitals) which
could be very useful for European legal texts (see the example in issue 63563).
Books using such recitals usually have an index that references the recitals
instead of page numbers.

These two issues should be implemented together to get the maximum added value.

register true is on again. Looks like a bug. Can anyone quickly confirm this?

The following steps sometimes lead to data loss (so for me two minutes ago -
will cost me an hour to re-enter this stuff :-( ):

- Open a previously created file
- edit the file
- delete parts of the file to get an extract of the file
- save the extract under a new name

= the editing steps in the finally deleted parts of the file are lost because I
did not remember not having saved the full version of the file before. And there
is no backup either as the automatic save function discards the deleted text,
too.

What about a confirmation box saying that some data that have been entered since
the last saving action has been deleted again has not be saved in the old file
either?

There seem to be more problems with fore-/background settings of drawings as I

[graphics-issues] [Issue 63517] Copy draw object using ct rl-drag

I still do not consider the current solution intuitive. I worked the whole day
with OOo doing graphics yesterday and simply did not find out how to copy a
graphical element using the mouse. There is no reason why one should have to
wait a second.

Furthermore I believe there is a bug in the copy function (or at least another
feature I do not understand): Get the file in the attachment. I click to a
graphical element (Q Y1 for instance), wait (there is no outline change in this
case, btw), press Ctrl, the copy cursor appears indeed, I drop the object, it
disappears. Reason: The object is positioned in the background.

This might be connected to issue 63527.

The problem seems only to appear in Writer, not in Draw.

See the attached example: Click Isoquanten once (blue rectangles appear). Try
to drag it, while dragging press Esc. There is no reaction.

The behavior only seems to appear in Writer. Draw and Impress work correctly.
See the just attached file.

Strange. For me it does not work with any element.

Open the attached example file in Writer. Click once to the text Qy1 or to one
of the curves. The green rectangles appear (element is select). Type Esc.

= There is no reaction on my machine (W2K SP2, OOo 2.0.2). My Esc key works in
other applications...

Oooops, typo. I'm using Win XP, of course. Sorry...

I use the OOo 2.0.2 German. Could this make a difference? Anyone out there to
confirm the issue?

Open the attached file in Writer. Go to page 10. Cut the paragraph after header
e) Cut the following text (select it, press shift-delete). Re-paste it to the
same position (do not move the cursor, just press shift-insert).

= The grapic below (Abbildung 7...) extends into the margin at the bottom of
the page.

When the file is saved and reloaded, the problem disappears.

Gotcha...

The keyboard settings for Esc were not set to cancel but to nothing. Setting it
to cancel corrects the problem. Seems I changed this setting by accident.

Thanks for your help.
